In honor of MLK Day, we turn to 1972, when 100,000 people gathered at the LA Memorial Coliseum to commemorate the seventh anniversary of the Watts Rebellion in Los Angeles to help heal the community. The gig featured some of the greatest artists on Stax Records, The Staples Singers, The Bar-Kays, and Carla Thomas, to name a few. And, of course, the iconic Isaac Hayes headlined the night. Today we share a previously unreleased version of the soul-funk anthem “Theme From Shaft (Live At Wattstax, Los Angeles, CA / August 20, 1972 / Version 1),” from the forthcoming release Soul'd Out: The Complete Wattstax Collection, out Feb. 24.

In this episode, we have a conversation with Bomani Mintz, Founder & CEO of Crave It based in Los Angeles, California. The driving force of Mintz's business is to ensure that food creators and food lovers have a space where people can easily find and share the best places to eat based on recommendations. Since college Mintz wanted to build a business and make an impact on his surrounding community, leading him to take on many risks before starting an app for foodie lovers (11:56). “I want to make sure that food creators and food businesses truly have a home. I want to break down cultural barriers and I think the best way to do that is by breaking it literally with food, dishes, and understanding who we are as a people,” Mintz said (02:04). Mintz's passion started as a side hustle, taking photos and videos for restaurants, and event companies. Later on, he started looking into how to get to Silicon Valley eventually landing a job at LinkedIn. Working as a Mid-Market Enterprise Customer Success Manager at LinkedIn, Mintz acquired the skills necessary to create a successful business focused on tech and food (6:24). For Mintz, consistency has become a key factor in creating innovative, disruptive ideas for a business at the intersection of food and tech (29:15). Things I love that there's not just one main character, there is but there's great characters and Christy does such a great job of building community and the language and sentences are fantastic the way she describes garden events. You will I garden here in Zone 10b, we used to be zone 9b but with climate change. I belonged to this community garden for 22 years and I was on the board for 20 of those years. I knew from my first season I needed to write a story about a community garden, there's so many things that go on, so I began tucking little stories away over the years. 3 books and a NOVELOriginally I didn't want to write a garden book, and as you know I have 3 garden books, but https://amzn.to/3Nyy02V (Garden Variety) is the way I wanted to write which is telling garden lessons through story. Took a long time, because it was my first novel, it started out in a different way. I love that you say it's my first because I can't wait to read the sequel and find out what happens to the other characters. Lost Angelos has more than 120 community gardens and needs more of them. 60% or maybe more live in an apartment and community gardens are the solace that provides the space for those people. I am an advocate for more gardens in any empty space. Jackie asks where did you come up with the size because the beds are a really nice size in the story. They must be a composite of people you've met over the years. The main character is Lizzy. She's a section rep. She brings people in, writes citations, At first I was like citations? But then I realized how important they are. Usually rules come about because of something that has caused a lot of damage. Lizzy brings in this new guy named Jared, who's sort of a surfer, handyman, a really nice guy but doesn't really know how to commit to anything, and is used to just sliding from one thing to the next wherever the wind sends him. Mary who is the president. Bernice who is her foe, who is also on the board who wants to be president. Ned who is the garden master. And some ancillary characters. An eclectic group of people. My goal was to make the characters as diverse as I could, it's called https://amzn.to/3Nyy02V (Garden Variety) because gardens usually are. I could see me being just like Jared in the beginning, and not even realizing there were rules or things I should or shouldn't do. I love how in the back you have all the garden tips, because in the beginning I was like I should be taking notes and writing all this down. 10 take away garden lessons, small space garden tips for home and community gardens, a reading group guide. It's great for book clubs, extra bonuses a little dose of non-fiction in a fiction setting. I do plan for this to be a trilogy, but I've had to set it down because of all the other stuff I have going on. The co-executive producer and showrunner of Ghost Adventures: House Calls, Michael Dorsey, has made a career out of documenting compelling stories for TV and film. Over the years he's become known for his expertise on the "unsolved" murder of Biggie Smalls having produced multiple projects about the case. On this episode of A Study of Strange, Dorsey shares his insight and opinion about who killed Biggie and why there have been no arrests. On March 9th, 1997, in Los Angeles CA, superstar music artist Biggie Smalls, aka the Notorious B.I.G., was shot at an after party near the Peterson Automotive Museum. The assailant pulled up along side Biggie in a Chevrolet Impala and attacked. Biggie was rushed to the hospital but passed away shortly after arriving. He was only 24 years old. This came just 6 months after rival rapper, Tupac Shakur, was also shot and killed. Many speculate the murders were connected. No suspect has ever been arrested for Biggie's murder despite the fact that many consider the case solved. Therein lies where the case takes a strange turn. The murder of Biggie Smalls is shrouded in conspiracy theories and rumors. Rumors of gang violence, business rivalries, police corruption, and vengeance. The truth may lie somewhere in the middle. He shares from the heart on today's reflection and on his journey of recovery.THE "WORTH" OF SOBRIETYEvery A.A. group ought to be fully self-supporting, declining outside contributions.TWELVE AND TWELVE TRADITIONS, p. 160When I go shopping I look at the prices and if I need what I see, I buy it and pay. Now that I am supposed to be in rehabilitation, I have to straighten out my life. When I go to a meeting, I take a coffee with sugar and milk, sometimes more than one. But at the collection time, I am either too bust to take money out of my purse, or I do not have enough, but I am there because I need this meeting. I heard someone suggest dropping the price of a beer into the basket, and I thought, that's too much! I almost never give one dollar. Like many others, I rely on the more generous members to finance the Fellowship. I forget that it takes money to rent the meeting room, buy my milk, sugar and cups. I will pay, without hesitation, ninety cents for a cup of coffee at a restaurant after the meeting; I always have money for that. So, how much is my sobriety and my inner peace worth?

The ladies of the PATHPod head west once again, finding themselves in LA talking with an amazing researcher and clinician. Dr. David Wiss is a Registered Dietitian who founded Nutrition In Recovery, a group practice of RDNs specializing in the treatment of eating and substance use disorders in 2013. He earned his Doctor of Philosophy degree (PhD) in 2022 by investigating the links between adverse childhood experiences and various mental health outcomes among socially disadvantaged men. The three of them talked about nutrition and its role in substance use disorder and the recovery process. That lead them to dig into the role of nutrition in mental health, food addiction and the relationship between eating disorders and substance use disorder, adverse childhood experiences and the role social determinants of health play in all of it. Dr. Wiss tackles challenging information and his brilliance is in synthesizing it, communicating in a way that can be easily understood and impactful. This is an episode to share far and wide as these issues effect far too many and solutions are less than ideal. Dr. Wiss is truly a pioneer and what he offers here is profound and healing. You can find Dr. Wiss at his clinical practice, Nutrition In Recovery or at Wise Mind Nutrition. Born in Romania, raised in Germany, and now living in Los Angeles CA, classical guitarist and instructor Mircea Gogoncea joins us on the show. As an teacher of the instrument, Mircea believes that its important to start at an early age when learning the craft. This is where the company Tonebase comes in. The company which has been described as “Netflix meets Masterclass”. has a firm belief that knowledge is meant to be shared. The passing down of information from one generation to the next is the only way a culture can continue to develop and grow. Nowhere is this more true than in music. Without a great teacher, students at every skill level cannot progress sufficiently. That is why it is crucial for all students to have access to the best instructors possible through every stage of their musical development. Unfortunately, for too long, the knowledge of the world's greatest musicians has been accessible to only a select few - those with the necessary talent and funds to attend the most elite universities and conservatories. At tonebase, their mission is to change that standard by democratizing high-level music education around the world. By combining music, passion, and technology, we aim to build the go-to resource for anyone learning an instrument anywhere. Mircea Gogoncea is a Romanian-German guitarist based in Los Angeles. He has performed in over 350 concerts on 5 continents and has been awarded 169 prizes. His interactive concerts feature own compositions for guitar, live electronics, and audience participation, challenging the traditional separation between the roles of performers and listeners. He holds six university degrees, including a Doctor of Musical Arts from USC. He is Head of Guitar at tonebase, the leading online music education institution. This place might look strangely familiar to some. You may think, in your mind, that you have seen it before. If you have watched enough tv or movies over the last 20 years it will soon become clear. There aren't many places in the world that are creepier than abandoned hospitals, and the Linda Vista Hospital in Los Angeles California goes a long way to reinforcing that story. The hospital opened in 1904, and was used as a psychiatric hospital as well as a “normal” hospital. Before it was closed in 1991, the it saw a steady increase in patients, due to an increase in violent gang related crime in the surrounding Boyle Heights area. But the sense of familiarity to this place will be revealed in this episode.Join us to find out why the Linda Vista Hospital is the place of nightmares.Join us on our social pages at @anneandrenata and our Facebook page for podcast news and chat at https://www.facebook.com/TrueHauntingsPodcast#lindavistahospital #horror #nightmares #hauntedhospital #hauntedusa #hauntedcalifornia #losangeles #psychiatrichospital #hollywoodhaunting #anneandrenata #truehauntingspodcast #hauntedsites #paranormalpodcast #frightfullygood #truehauntings #placeofnightmares #scarymovies #frighteningplaces #poltergeists #apparitions #hauntedhospitals See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
