Know a writer or someone who wants to be a writer? Then forward this post to them and invite them to listen to our writers podcast. Thank you! “Home Means Nevada.” While neither of us are natives, CC's and my Silver State roots run very deep to the point that between us, we have seven published and in-progress Nevada-centric books. What literary quality about our home draws us to write about our home? Is it our familiarity with our state's rich history, landscape, and political structure? We talk about all that and more. We touch on other subjects, including the Nevada Day Parade, the real Nevada Day, and our podcast award from the last weekend. Spoiler: KOLO8. CC is having a lot of fun with reading Edgar Allen Poe for Spooktober, so check out her YouTube Channel. "Go home." "Go back to your country." "You don't belong here." These are phrases that many Nevadans of Asian descent have heard—it's rooted in a view of Asians as perpetual foreigners in this country, no matter how long they've lived here. As UNLV Professor Emeritus Sue Fawn Chung tells us, this modern-day sentiment is hardly new. It has roots in the treatment of some of the earliest Asian migrants to the U.S.: Chinese laborers who came to work in mining and railroads, in kitchens and laundry shops. That treatment, at times, boiled over into violence. It also culminated in the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882, the only federal law to this day to restrict immigration on the basis of race. As UNLV Law Professor Michael Kagan, author of The Battle to Stay in America, explains, the Chinese Exclusion Act and subsequent Supreme Court cases have had lasting impacts on immigration law to this day.Chinese Exclusion came to an end when it proved politically expedient to ally with China against a different threat in World War II: Japan. Former Clark County Principal and longtime community leader Wayne Tanaka tells the story of the so-called internment camps where 120,000 Japanese Americans (including his father) were detained—and why local Las Vegans stepped up to protect their Japanese American neighbors.Wayne also tells us why it's important to remember this history—and how it can teach us to do better.Exit Spring Mountain is a podcast from Nevada Public Radio. Besides catching up on all those streaming options you meant to watch for the past three or four years, the Covid-19 pandemic provides opportunities to start your movie making career. Based on an idea spawned by schlock movie mogul Roger Corman, some Ely Film Festival board members created a “Stay Home Means Nevada” movie contest going on right now through May First. I’m now a board member too but can’t take credit for the idea, which strikes me as a fun and simple one. Using a cell phone, shoot a two-minute, family friendly piece that includes the line “Home Means Nevada,” title of the state’s official song. You can learn more about entering the contest on the Ely Film Festival’s Facebook page. The page also features winners from a student contest held in March, and you can even find a seven-minute cell-phone video I created about the area’s screen history called Desperation in Ely. That title comes because Stephen King set one of his horror tales in the region after spending some

According to a recent article is DS News, NeighborWorks America , a Washington, D.C.-based non-profit  , has announced the awarding of $44.8 million to various organizations in the National Foreclosure Mitigation Counseling program to help distressed families and individuals whose homes are facing foreclosure. While foreclosure numbers have declined significantly since the peak years of 2010 and 2011, a recent uptick in foreclosure starts demonstrates the need still exists for loss mitigation programs and non-profit expertise. Home Means Nevada is another unique non-profit / governmental partnership created to assist struggling homeowners.  Home Means Nevada is a Nevada State affiliated nonprofit organization established for the development and execution of homeowner assistance and outreach programs and events to address the challenges and needs of distressed homeowners. Joining the broadcast to discuss the expanding role of non-profits in the mortgage industry is Anna Zakowska, CEO of Home Means Nevada. Anna launched the Nevada Home Retention Program designed to assist those individuals and families at risk of losing their homes who have not been helped by other housing programs.
