Headlines warned us about microplastics in our brains. A chemist says the study may have been measuring brain fat instead. In 2025, a study claiming microplastics accumulate in human brain tissue dominated our feeds. We covered it. Then Dr. Michelle Wong, a chemical scientist and science communicator, flagged a problem with the methodology. So we went to the primary literature, read the critique, and brought in one of the first scientists to publicly challenge the findings: Dr. Oliver Jones, Professor of Analytical Chemistry at RMIT University in Melbourne. In this episode, we unpack what went wrong with the measurement method, what it means for the broader microplastics conversation, and why being willing to say "I was wrong" is so vital for good science. In this episode: How pyrolysis GC-MS works and why it can confuse plastic breakdown products with brain fat Why potassium hydroxide digestion creates soap, which also mimics plastic signatures The contamination problem: body bags, centrifuge tubes, plastic storage containers, and lab air Why 7 grams of microplastic per brain is more than what researchers find in raw sewage The Marfella study in The New England Journal of Medicine: microplastics in arterial plaques and why it also lacked blank controls How microplastics could enter the body: skin absorption, ingestion, and inhalation Why PM2.5 monitoring already captures the most relevant airborne microplastic exposure What the WHO, FDA, and European Food Safety Authority have concluded about microplastic harm What better microplastics research would actually look like Why the real lesson is about how we evaluate headlines, not just microplastics Dr. Oliver Jones is Professor of Analytical Chemistry and Associate Dean of Biosciences and Food Technology at RMIT University in Melbourne. A Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry (FRSC) and the Royal Australian Chemical Institute (FRACI), he holds degrees from Imperial College London and Cambridge. He is one of only 118 scientists worldwide named to the IUPAC Periodic Table of Outstanding Younger Chemists. His research focuses on developing methods to measure environmental contaminants, including microplastics, and he was among the first scientists to publicly challenge the methodology of the viral "microplastics in the brain" study. In this episode of the Nomad Futurist Podcast, co-hosts Nabeel Mahmood and Phillip Koblence sit down with Oliver Jones, Managing Partner at Accelerated Infrastructure Capital Limited (AIC), for a conversation that spans entrepreneurship, resilience, and the evolution of digital infrastructure in the age of AI. From airports and facilities management to data centers and large-scale infrastructure investment, Jones reflects on a career built at the intersection of risk, timing, and reinvention. Jones recalls leaving a stable role at the British Airports Authority to start a facilities management business with limited capital and a clear drive to build something of his own. That decision set the tone for a career built on ownership — of risk, outcomes, and responsibility — through growth, setbacks, and shocks like the dot-com crash and 9/11: “You back yourself or you don't. And if you don't back yourself, you quit…” He expands on this mindset, emphasizing the importance of personal responsibility in leadership: “I don't want managers in business, I want the owners… the people who are going to wake up in the middle of the night worrying about the business in a good way…” Across ventures and geographies, Jones returns to a consistent principle: execution always outweighs ambition on paper. Whether building early facilities management platforms or structuring complex global infrastructure investments, he underscores that success depends on operational discipline, contractual clarity, and a relentless focus on real-world performance: “It's all very well building big, fancy, expensive, complicated stuff, but if it doesn't work, it's not worth it.” Looking ahead, Jones frames the current AI and digital infrastructure cycle as one of the most dynamic periods he has experienced. But he also warns that success in this next wave will depend less on prediction and more on adaptability: designing systems, capital structures, and facilities with flexibility built in from the start. “What you have to do is build in and invest in optionality…” His perspective brings the conversation full circle, grounded in the idea that across every cycle and shift, enduring success comes back to execution, accountability, and the discipline to build for what actually works in practice. Connect with Oliver Jones on LinkedIn to continue the conversation and explore his work in digital infrastructure and investment.
When history is told, it is often shaped by those who've benefitted most in the telling of its story. Sometimes it takes someone to rouse us from our complacency and remind us that history is shared by everyone and before Carter G. Woodson did that for us, a coal miner from Fayette County, West Virginia named Oliver Jones did it for him, setting in motion one of America's most significant educational movements and events, Black History Month.

“If you want to be a customer of choice, it's not going to come down to the contract, it's going to come down to the relationship, even at the individual level.” - Oliver Jones, Director (Procurement) for H&Z Management Consultancy Procurement may be a highly tech-driven function – and growing ever more so by the day – but at its core, the quality of procurement's relationships with internal stakeholders and suppliers ultimately determine their success or failure for the business. In this episode, Philip Ideson speaks with Oliver Jones, Director (Procurement) for H&Z Management Consultancy, about why the “relationship” part of supplier relationship management (SRM) is vital for procurement's ability to deliver value to the business. He also shares his perspective on how procurement can overcome some of the more common obstacles to creating strong relationships, but why, in the end, it's well worth the effort – for procurement, for suppliers, and for the business in general. They also discuss: How multiple metrics of procurement's success – like risk management, ESG, or value beyond savings – are all tied back to (and dependant on) supplier relationship management Why the ‘center-led' operating model is the optimal framework to enable successful supplier relationship management Best practices for dividing procurement's focus and prioritization among tier 1, tier 2, and tier 3 suppliers Links: Subscribe to This Week in Procurement Oliver Jones on LinkedIn

He gives us the real story behind the creation of the Jekyll & Hyde musical, which differs from the way Wildhorn tells the tale. We also get into his other writings and how he transitioned into teaching and also podcasting. A few months after his interview with me, he brought me onto his own podcast called StoryBeat, where I discussed my own ups and downs in this career as well as how I approach auditions and performances. The actor, singer, and podcaster, Patrick Oliver Jones has been in the performing arts, both onstage and onscreen, for more than 30 years. Originally from Birmingham Alabama, he brought his Southern charm to New York City in 2008 with dreams of Broadway. And he's gotten close with roles in off-Broadway world premieres, touring nationally with The Addams Family and Evita, and the pre-Broadway cast of First Wives Club that never quite made it. Having collaborated with Tony-winning directors such as Jerry Zaks, Randy Skinner, and a favorite StoryBeat guest, Richard Maltby Jr., he's gotten to perform alongside Broadway talents like Joey Fatone, Alfonso Ribeiro, Faith Prince, and Andrea McArdle. And he has found regional theater acclaim with Henry and SALT Award nominations for standout performances in Fun Home and Crazy for You. On camera, there have been numerous national commercials, award-winning short films, and co-starring roles on TV shows like Blue Bloods, Law & Order: Criminal Intent, and Imposters. In 2022 he received the Communicator Award of Distinction from the Academy of Interactive and Visual Arts for his work in podcasting. He currently produces and hosts three performing arts podcasts: Why I'll Never Make It, which is in its eighth season, Closing Night, which focuses on Broadway history, and The Spotlight Series in which he talks with those making a difference in the arts and beyond. For the record, I've been a guest on Why I'll Never Make It discussing my career in show business and how I created Jekyll & Hyde, the Musical with Frank Wildhorn. I've got to tell you, it was a lot of fun for me to do the show with Patrick, and I highly urge you to give it a listen.
