For episode 228 of our award-winning podcast for writers, we're on America's Loneliest Road. You can have the usual (and expensive) fun in a Disney park or on a beach somewhere, or you can find adventure on Highway 50 that intersects Nevada from west to east. We traveled this long and winding road this week because that is what Nevada nerds do when we go on vacation. We stopped at the Free Little Libraries in Carson City, Dayton, Fallon, Eureka, and Ely to drop off a copy of Hope Knocks Twice. If you pick up one of those books, please leave a review. We spent a few nights in Ely to take in all the tourist stops. The Great Basin National Park is home to Mt. Wheeler, the bristlecone pines, and the Lehman Caves, all of which we checked out a few years ago. At the White Pine County Museum, we found a surprise directly related to CC's former life.We took a ride on the Nevada Northern Railroad, and we got to extensively tour their workshop and museum. We can't overstate what a privilege it was to view the train engines and cars in their “natural” setting, along with the attached metal-working shops. If you're any kind of mechanical geek, you have to go. And make sure you check in with the shop managers (the cats). While on the ride, we discovered yet another surprise, this one directly related to one of my books.Gosh, so much fun.In the rest of the podcast, we talk about our interviews with writers in this place and on the Nevada Author Network, and we bring you up to date on our works in progress.-Serving Salvation Book Two is out. The Nevada Author Network welcomes Teresa Breeden to the microphone.Teresa (pen name: Tori Briar) is a poet/writer who finds her inspiration when writing for her family. A proud Loyola Marymount Lion, she graduated with her English degree (writing emphasis) and a passion to create art, whether it be with words in the heart of a poem, with ink on paper, or with watercolors and sketches of monsters. When her daughter was born, she wanted to share her love of reading, so Teresa started paying more attention to available novels. Her favorite genre is fantasy, but she found that there were relatively few fantasy books with female protagonists. That's when she set out to write her first novel. Her passion and creativity led her to being awarded the Nevada Arts Council Fellowship for Literature, and she has published over sixty poems. Her book, Falling, was published under her pen name, Tori Briar. In her words, Falling “is the story of high school sophomore Kallie, an introvert with a mean round kick, who has survived the reoccurring violence of a family curse only by faithfully following rules she must now break to stay alive; and Adlai, a powerful but lonely vampire who tends to break his toys. As their paths continue to cross, Kallie must decide how far she's willing to bend her rules to survive and figure out whether Adlai is the hero who seems to show up when she most needs help, or the most dangerous villain she's ever faced.”Teresa joins us to discuss her journey and inspirations. You can find Teresa through her website at http://www.toribriar.com/Her social media sites include Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, and Twitter/X.You can learn more about the Sierra Arts Foundation at https://sierraarts.org/You can contact Two Moore Books, LLC via their main website at https://www.carsonhume.com

In fact, almost all her writings take place locally, including her debut modern fantasy novel The Buried Knight published in 2023, and its sequel, The Hidden Druid, published at the end of 2024. A voracious reader as a child, Angela always knew she wanted to write books of her own, but it wasn't until a dramatic life change in 2015 that she allowed herself to reclaim her dream. A dream that has stretched to encompass helping other young or beginning authors reach their dream with her developmental editing. When not writing or editing, you can find her handling her zoo of many pets, reading her youngest son's fanfiction, or curling up in a blanket with a mug of tea and a stack of four or five books in easy reach. To stay up to date on release dates and for more Nevada adventures, join her newsletter or purchase books directly at www.angelalaverghettabooks.comAngela's books are available on Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and Kobo, and locally at the Nevada State Museum Gift Shop, Grassroots, Thistle & Nightshade, and the Depot Art Gallery and Bookstore. You can also find her on social media: Instagram, Threads, Bluesky, TikTok, and Facebook. You can learn more about the Sierra Arts Foundation at https://sierraarts.org/You can contact Two Moore Books, LLC via their main website at https://www.carsonhume.com
For Episode 226 of our award-winning podcast for writers, we are traveling to a new frontier. We often receive requests from published writers from around the world asking to be on our podcast. Elaine Sargent's writing odyssey began as a college journalism student where she was a reporter for the university newspaper. Her beat was Arts and Entertainment, and she was assigned to interview on-campus artists and review shows in hopes of ultimately becoming a fashion journalist. Her path took a turn when she discovered the University of Nevada costume design program, which allowed her to combine her two professional interests: writing and fashion. This unique mixture led to her employment behind the stage in Nevada's famous showrooms, outfitting and costuming showgirls and other performers. Elaine joins the Nevada Authors Network to discuss how she developed and wrote Rhinestone Confidential through her personal experiences and in-depth interviews with past colleagues and friends.Rhinestone Confidential is available at the Radical Cat Bookstore in Reno, Nevada, and on Amazon. For Episode 225 of our award-winning podcast for writers, we set ourselves up for disappointment. We often say that “writing is a solo project done on the public stage,” meaning we're alone in our endeavors, but that's not true. We rely on beta readers, editors, and cover designers to produce the best book possible. We learned this week what happens when success strikes one of our key partners: we had to slip book release dates. Sad for us, but happy for them! We discuss our feelings on the subject and how we adjusted our plans.Related: -Serving Salvation Book Two is out. Ken Sutherland learned the art of writing through the radio business. Not blessed with the stereotypical deep voice of the airwaves, he realized he needed to say something interesting to stay employed, and he began to write. As his career and reputation grew, he became the go-to guy for anything that needed to be written: news, sales proposals, and especially commercials. He takes pride in having been the creative force behind more than forty thousand commercials. His passion and professionalism were recognized by his peers when he was inducted in the Nevada Broadcasters Hall of Fame in 2005.Upon his retirement, Ken finished the first books of his successful and intriguing Heartbreaker series, including Heartbreaker, The Hollywood Diamond Murders, and the soon-to-be-released third book, Unfinished Business.Ken joins the Nevada Authors Network to talk about how the Heartbreaker series came to life from his experiences in his Hall of Fame career. You can learn more about Ken and his books at https://kensutherlandauthor.com/You can learn more about the Sierra Arts Foundation at https://sierraarts.org/You can contact Two Moore Books, LLC via their main website at https://www.carsonhume.com
For Episode 224 of our award-winning podcast for writers, we debate whether independent writers deserve more than three-star reviews. An apology up front: CC and I have a plague. Not the plague, but we're not feeling great. We are getting better.CC found this statement on the internet: “Most indy authors don't deserve more than a three-star review.” This absolute statement triggered a discussion, and we decided to bring that debate to this week's podcast. CC takes up why this is wrong while I play devil's advocate on why indy writers shouldn't get four- or five-star reviews.Book Notes:-Serving Salvation Book Two is out. It's available on most platforms and our online bookstore.-Serving Salvation Book Three will be released in July.-The Virginia City Romance is at Red Adept for line editing and will be released next month.- CC is running a cover design contest at 99Designs.-The third book of the A Sheriff in Nevada series is with Teri, the awesome creative editor. Two Moore Books, LLC is partnered with the Sierra Arts Foundation to highlight a local author and member of the Sierra Arts Literary Community. For Episode 223 of our award-winning podcast for writers, we're a little all over the place. It was a week.Reminder: Serving Salvation Book Two will be released on May 14. Book One got very nice reviews, and the B1 ebook is available for 99 cents on the major platforms. Check out our Books page.Happy Mother's Day not only to mothers, but to those who step up and be a mother in times of need. And to the dads who ran out to the store at the last minute for their kids. Here's a story all writers can relate to. We were blessed with a visit from the grandkids on Saturday, and our youngest mentioned they were taking a school field trip to Virginia City, Nevada (they live in Sparks). When CC mentioned she wrote a book about Virginia City, the grandkid said, “But you're retired.”Context: they are the child of a New York Times bestselling author, and the grandchild of two full-time authors, so they intuitively understand at ten years old that writing is hard work. We wish everyone was so intelligent (objectively speaking).Aside from that, we spent most of the week editing, editing, and editing. CC tells of her challenges this week getting her book back to Red Adept under the deadline. The other significant event was the May 7 kickoff of the Nevada Authors network, our partnership with the Sierra Arts Foundation to highlight a local writer every week. We will interview Mariposa Cruz for the May 14 broadcast. Know a writer or someone who wants to be a writer? Then forward this post to them and invite them to listen to our writers podcast. Thank you!For Episode 222 of our award-winning podcast, we dive into the dark recesses of some of the most important places for writers of historical fiction and fact-based historical fiction: the archives. This week, CC attended the annual Conference of Inter-Mountain Archivists (CIMA) in Boise, Idaho, where she networked with the guardians of records in repositories across the western United States. Archivists are librarians on Mountain Dew Plus because each and every one of them is passionate about the records on their shelves and in their files. For writers in particular, archivists are data experts, and they will bend over backwards to help their patrons access the records they need.Along with our trip to Boise, CC got to fan-girl and swing by Ontario, Oregon, the home of the Garden Answer. She's been watching Laura for many years and, in truth, served as a partial inspiration for our own podcast. We stopped by her parents' garden store, Andrews Seed Company, and got to meet Susan, Laura's mom, who was very patient and polite with two out-of-town rubes who had so many questions. Thank you, Susan! This week, we debut the Nevada Authors Network, our partnership with Sierra Arts Foundation to promote Northern Nevada writers. Join us weekly as we interview local authors about their books. The podcasts can be found on our main Two Moore Books website. We are featured on Susan Winters's "Create on the Side!" blog. Know a writer or someone who wants to be a writer? Then forward this post to them and invite them to listen to our writers podcast. Thank you!For Episode 221 of our award-winning podcast, we take on Meta and discuss their “fair use” of seven million literary works to train their artificial intelligence system. For those untouched by the controversy, we referred Keziah Weir's excellent Vanity Fair article, “This Is How Meta AI Staffers Deemed More Than 7 Million Books to Have No “Economic Value” (link) and cite this paragraph as background:“Lawyers for Meta are indeed invoking that very “fair use” defense in a copyright suit that's been wending its way through the Northern District of California legal system for nearly two years. Richard Kadrey et al. v. Meta Platforms—and the reams of confidential Meta communications, newly in the public record as exhibits for the plaintiffs—offers an unprecedented look at the internal maneuverings behind the company's decision to train its model on a database containing more than 7 million pirated books.”As writers, CC and I have strong opinions about the subject, and we are in sync about how we came to this point, and we agree that the damage is done, and that “the horse has left the barn and it ain't coming back.” We have different and, I think, interesting opinions about the outcomes to this controversy. For our discussion, we pull in:-The Lord of the Rings,-Carolyn Keene and Franklin W. Dixon,-Thomas Edison,-Covenant (the movie),-John Steinbeck and Ernest Hemingway,-CC's professional and extensive experience on the “fair use” issue, and-Our short-lived use of Artificial Intelligence (not what you think).Aside from AI, we bring you up to speed on current events, including CIMA and our book signing on Saturday, and we talk about our current writing projects and how we're abused by our editors (no names mentioned)(kidding!).And we started a presale on Serving Salvation Book Two.Check us out and let us know what you think. Know a writer or someone who wants to be a writer? Then forward this post to them and invite them to listen to our writers podcast. Thank you!For Episode 220 of our award-winning podcast, we were busy and we are tired. We started the week on Sunday, April 13 with the book signing at the Nevada State Museum. We got to meet new friends and sell them our books. We got to chat with our fellow independent writers. We got to enjoy a beautiful spring day in a place that has so many memories for us. A great day.During the week, we organized the release of Serving Salvation Book Two, the next book in the Salvation series. We're put the manuscript and cover on some of the platforms, and we put the manuscript on Book Sirens. (Please let us know if you want to be an ARC reader.) We'll be doing a cover reveal soon, along with the pre-sale.Also this week, we learned that the Las Vegas Clark County Library System purchased our book catalogue. They are making our ebooks available for checkout. This is the second public library in Nevada to purchase our catalog, and it's the largest system in the state. If you are a patron of the Churchill County Library or the Clark County Library, please enjoy our ebooks through your Libby app for free!On Saturday, we recorded the first six podcasts for the Nevada Authors Network (NAN) at the Sierra Arts Foundation (SAF) Deport Art Gallery and Bookstore in Sparks. It was an absolute joy to talk about writing one-on-one with our colleagues, all of whom are very articulate and passionate about their books. You are our people. We will begin releasing the NAN podcasts and videos beginning on Wednesday, May 7, and our first guest will be Tia Flores, SAF program director. Tune in!We're getting ready for Independent Bookstore Day on Saturday, April 26, because we have an independent bookstore. We are joining One More Chapter in their grand opening on the same day, along with many of our author colleagues, and doing a book signing. If you're in the area, stop by the Old Post Office next to the Pioneer Center in downtown Reno on Saturday, April 26 from 10:00am to 1:00pm. You'll get to meet us and a bunch of excellent writers as we support Independent Bookstores. You'll hear in the podcast that we believe in the Arts. We may have gotten carried away, but it's all good. Know a writer or someone who wants to be a writer? Then forward this post to them and invite them to listen to our writers podcast. Thank you!For Episode 219 of our award-winning podcast, we believe in you, the independent writer. As we enter the final prep for our book signing at the Nevada State Museum, we're giving you (and us) a pep talk. When we started this full-time writing gig a year ago, we knew we'd be riding a roller coaster of feelings, expectations, and disappointment. But golly, what a ride, especially in the last six months. The economy has not been our friend, and we've had to scale back plans and dreams accordingly. Not scaled back: our belief in our colleagues and ourselves. April is Independent Writers Month, and more than ever, we need to pull together and lift each other up. This is one reason why we are partnering with the Sierra Arts Foundation. We hope to give indy writers another marketing platform to talk about themselves and their works.Streets and buildings make a town, but it's creative art that makes it a community, and writers are artists. Keep writing and keep believing in yourself. If you need strength, we're happy to share some of ours. You got this!Reminders:-We will be at the Nevada State Museum on Sunday, April 13 for a book signing. Please join us!-We will be recording a second podcast for the Nevada Authors Network on April 19 for release in May.-Prices are slashed on bookstore. Know a writer or someone who wants to be a writer? Then forward this post to them and invite them to listen to our writers podcast. Thank you!For Episode 218 of our award-winning podcast, we're all about baseball, and frankly, I'm surprised we don't talk more about baseball on our little writers podcast. We went to Game 3 of the Athletics home opener in West Sacramento, and we joined a few thousand of our close friends as they took on our Chicago Cubs. It was a three-day celebration of Rickey Henderson, the Man of Steal, whose accomplishments and personality transcended the sport. So much love for the Rickey! We have been true-blue Cubs fans since the 1980s. We talk about our own Northside experiences and our time in Sutter Health Field. It wasn't all baseball. We spent time with family and we visited the Capital Books in downtown Sacramento. We had fun talking about writing with folks who don't write (authors will get this).Important announcements:-We will be at the Nevada State Museum on Sunday, April 13 for a book signing. Know a writer or someone who wants to be a writer? Then forward this post to them and invite them to listen to our writers podcast. Thank you!In Episode 217 of our award-winning podcast, we're wrapping up March 2025, and we find that we had a “slow” month. We do our monthly wrap-up and learn that March 2025 didn't have a lot of bells and whistles like previous months. It's not to say it wasn't exciting, but it was busy.Significantly, we used the time to prepare for our upcoming events:-On April 13, we're doing a book signing at the Nevada State Museum.-Later in April, we start recording podcast of the Nevada Authors Network (NAN) in partnership with the Sierra Arts Foundation.-In June, we're doing another book signing, this time at the Reno Barnes and Noble on South Virginia Street.Part of the prep was a small road trip to Sparks, Nevada to visit the SAF Depot Gallery and Bookstore, pictured above. We'll be doing our NAN podcasts there. We also visited the Sparks Heritage Museum in Victoria Square, and we saw pictures and exhibits that reminded us of the good ol days. Both are worthy places to visit, along with all of Victorian Square. We chatted about editing and writing, of course, and we outlined our upcoming releases (these dates are not set in stone):-May 2025: Serving Salvation Book 2.-June 2025: Virginia City Romance (Restless Spirits Book 1).-July 2025: Serving Salvation Book 3.-September 2025: Restless Spirits Book 2.-October 2025: A Sheriff in Nevada Book 3.Finally, we celebrated CC's first year of retirement, and what a year it was, too. Know a writer or someone who wants to be a writer? Then forward this post to them and invite them to listen to our writers podcast. Thank you!In Episode 216 of our award-winning podcast, we can't get away from our brains.Intellectually, we knew being full-time writers and running a business was an around-the-clock experience, but now that we're immersed, the reality of a 24/7 existence has set in.When we're not writing, we're thinking about our business. When we're not doing business things, CC and I talking about our marketing and expanding (or talking about writing). In the podcast, we chat about this “new” life, and we try to come up with ideas on how to escape from ourselves. More importantly, we ask for your ideas. We're happy to announce two signing events where local folks have a chance to meet us in public: one in April and one in July.Another big announcement: we slashed prices in our book store! Know a writer or someone who wants to be a writer? Then forward this post to them and invite them to listen to our writers podcast. Thank you!In Episode 215 of our lovely award-winning podcast, it's the economy, silly.Every independent writer is a business to some degree, and all of us make tough decisions about how we spend our money. CC and I had dreams above traveling and doing book signings and stuff, but the current economy is not kind to indy writers. There are the Amazon and billionaire boycotts, not to mention how everyone has to do an extra budgeting just to buy eggs.We use this space to talk about those challenges and what we're doing to mitigate them, starting with our online bookstore and being careful on choosing events. With these challenges, why do we do what we do? Because we love writing and we love meeting people who want to talk about writing. Also mentioned: current editing/writing status, upcoming releases, kindness, and the importance of St. Patrick's Day.Have a listen and let us know what you think. Your mileage may vary.In Episode 214 of our lovely award-winning podcast, we had another great week with a lot of different moving parts:You can now find our books on the shelves at Thistle and Nightshade, a wonder little bookstore in Reno, Nevada. Our sincere appreciation to Alyx (pictured) and Rhiannon for adding us to their expansive and varied inventory. You can find Thistle and Nightside in northwest Reno off Mae Anne Avenue. Definitely worth your time!We announced at the last meeting of the Sierra Arts Literary Community that we are offering our podcast and video services to writers. We're partnering with the Sierra Arts Foundation (SAF) to release a weekly podcast and video featuring a Sierra Nevada writer and their upcoming book. We know from our experience that marketing is a steep climb for independent writers, so we're hoping our efforts with writers and the SAF will elevate the visibility of Northern Nevada's excellent writers. We hope to start in May.Happy birthday to CC's Dad and Happy Employee Appreciate Day (Friday), and a special hello to International Women's Day. CC joined 44 other powerful women gathered on the Women's Podcasting Network to discuss their individual podcasts and respective businesses. CC learned a lot about how women around the road are making a difference in the world (like her!).We participated in the Smashwords “25% off ebook sale” (our books always seem to be on sale), and we began the registration process for this year's Carson Farmers Market. And somehow we managed to advance our writing projects. CC is still untying the Gordian knot that is her VC Ghost romance, and I passed 40K words on the third book of the “Sheriff in Nevada” series. We rejiggered our production schedule because the CFO for Two Moore Books, LLC (who is me) got grouchy about business expenditures. The upside for you, our fans, is our book release schedule extends into 2026 now.Whew.We managed to get to the main topic of today's podcast: reviews, reviews, reviews. They're almost as important as the books, and they are essential to a writer's success, whether they are mainstream or independent writers. We talked about the impact and necessity of reviews, and we outlined the two Advanced Readers Copy (ARC) websites we checked out: Book Sirens and Net Galley. We also begged our readers to leave reviews because feedback makes us better human beings and better writers. Is that all? Is that enough? (Grin) I think so.One last thing: please buy direct from us and help support the arts (and a couple of starving writers :))Have a listen and let us know what you think. TIA! Know a writer or someone who wants to be a writer? Then forward this post to them and invite them to listen to our writers podcast. Thank you!In Episode 212 of our lovely award-winning podcast, we talk about Draft2Digital and how we're using it to expand our books to libraries and book sellers around the world. I was also publicly embarrassed about three of my books.[Important: Two Moore Books, LLC is not compensated by vendors when we discuss their products and websites. We are discussing our interactions and experiences. Your mileage may vary.]CC discovered Draft2Digital which “distribute[s] ebook and paperback books to all the major retailers online, plus hundreds of storefronts worldwide.” We're using it to get our inventory onto more book websites and, most importantly, into all flavors of libraries. We talk about the creation process, as well as the profit margins and lessons learned. We are definitely excited to see our books all over the world.[Spoiler: E-books were super easy if you already have the materials and blurbs on hand.]Understandably, most library sites will not accept NSFW novels like “The Tucci Chronicles,” which is very graphic. It's a compilation of two books: “Love & Death on I-80 West” and “Starting Over in Las Vegas.” If you watch our YouTube, you'll see me turn very red when I talk about these books. We have a bunch of “Tucci” paperbacks in our inventory, so we're doing a sale: “The Tucci Chronicles” is available on our website for $20.CC discussed Milanote and how she is using it to organize her ongoing efforts with her VC Ghost manuscript.ZOEY is still on sale for 99¢ and will be released soon. Here's our online bookstore. Know a writer or someone who wants to be a writer? Then forward this post to them and invite them to listen to our writers podcast. Thank you!In Episode 211 of our lovely award-winning podcast, we salute Wham! and the fortieth anniversary of their mega-hit Careless Whisper. Where has the time gone?Aside from George and Andrew, the main topic is inserting real life (RL) characters and events in your books. As writers, the temptation is strong to include someone from RL into our books because they may be very interesting or very frustrating. CC and I outline both the good and not-so-good reasons for using the people you know in your books. We also touch on using popular culture references (hello, Backstreet Boys!).Also: holding a business retreat at the very top of the wheel at Harveys; a tease about a new physical outlet for our books; ZOEY is still on sale for 99¢ and will be released soon.Advanced reader copies of ZOEY are available on Book Sirens. Here's the story about the bomb and explosion at Harveys in 1980.Here is CC's YouTube channel that she mentioned. And here's our online bookstore. Know a writer or someone who wants to be a writer? Then forward this post to them and invite them to listen to our writers podcast. Thank you!In Episode 210 ofour lovely award-winning podcast, we dive into the most critical phase of your book aside from its creation: the editing. After weeks (or months or years) of writing your Great American Novel, it's time to hand your baby to another set of eyes and hands. But who should you hand it to and what are they going to do?For our podcast, we useLouise Harnby's excellent post “What are the different types of novel editing?” as a guide to walk you through the editing process. We sprinkle in our own experiences with our excellent editors, and we offer suggestions to writers who may not have the financial resources to hire their own editors. We hope you find this information useful. On the local front, theZOEY e-book is on pre-sale for 99¢, and I am going through CC's VC Ghost manuscript.Have a listen and let us know what you think.
