Welcome back to the podcast where we "help writers write," and today's important subject is how to "Keep It Simple, Silly."We were planning another cross-country trip recently when we realized we were making our lives harder than they needed to be. Not only did we take a step back, we realized that, hey, maybe other writers would be interested in our homegrown solutions to turn complex projects into simple tasks. These are not original ideas by any means, but we stuck a few good ones into this podcast for your listening pleasure and, maybe, your increased sanity and decreased anxiety.Along with planning the trip and doing things on camera, we're writing and publishing almost every day. "Finding Salvation" is available for presale (links below), and the paperbacks should also be out on March 17, including our bookstore. CC is grinding away at her "Restless Spirits" series with a possible publication date of April 2026. And we have more books coming out after those! (Also, did you know we have our own bookstore?)W're having so much fun interviewing other authors about their books and the craft of writing. The first of two recent interviews included VL '"Tori" Stuart, a retired psychologist & author living in Costa Rica, who shared her journey from psychology to writing, her experiences as an expat, and her insights into the dystopian genre (link). On the NV Author Network, Jade Griffin shared her experience and wisdom on the interplay between tabletop gaming and writing. She also highlighted her upcoming projects and reflects on her past works (link). Here are those links to pre-order "Finding Salvation:"AmazonBarnes & NobleGoogleKoboLots going on! Tori shares her journey from psychology to writing, her experiences as an expat, and her insights into the dystopian genre.Tori's writing journey began organically, and we mean that in the literal sense. She noticed the absence of a gardening column in a local expat newspaper, so she approached the editor and began writing. This initial foray into writing not only earned her fan mail but also sparked her passion for storytelling. Her first serious writing experience opened the door to novel writing, leading to her latest work, "Zade," her first dystopian novel. Our conversation explores the themes of hope in dystopian fiction, the challenges of marketing books, and the impact of personal experiences on writing. Tori emphasizes the importance of standing against evil and the struggles of crafting a compelling blurb for her upcoming novel. We here at the “Amateur Hour” invite writers to join us to chat about the craft of writing. This week, KJ Waters shares her journey as a writer, detailing her experiences from the initial inspiration sparked by natural disasters to the challenges of marketing her books. She discusses the evolution of her writing process, the importance of planning in a series, and the influence of her favorite authors. She began her writing journey in 2005, spurred by the dramatic backdrop of four major hurricanes striking Florida shortly after she moved there with her young children. This tumultuous period ignited her creativity, leading her to explore the idea of time travel, inspired by her love for Diana Gabaldon's Outlander series. KJ realized that the excitement of hurricanes intertwined with time travel could form the basis of a captivating narrative. She spent ten years crafting what she initially thought would be a single book. However, as she shared her ideas with friends, they encouraged her to expand her story into a series. KJ also reflects on the balance between creativity and the business side of writing, offering insights into the realities of being an independent author. The discussion culminates in a fun segment where KJ answers unique questions about her life and writing philosophy, leaving listeners with valuable takeaways about the writing journey. You can learn more about KJ and access her books at her website: https://www.kjwaters.com/Her books are available at Amazon, and her social media includes Facebook, TikTok, and Twitter/X. +++Cassidy Carson and JT Hume (“CC & JT”) are independent writers, publishers, and co-owners of Two Moore Books, LLC out of Carson City, Nevada, USA. For this episode of the "CC & JT Amateur Hour," we discuss the tools of the writing trade. During our professional experience as authors, we've seen a few things, as the saying goes. CC and I took typing classes back in the day, and we've seen and used all flavors of PC word processors up to and including the most recent version of Microsoft Word.We had the recent privilege of interviewing two writers who, in their own ways, represent the yin and yang of the modern set of writing tools and technology. Arnie Bernstein uses typewriters to create his manuscripts, and Kendall Brown uses virtual reality and ChatCGT to support her creative process.CC and I discuss these methodologies and technologies, noting that each has their strengths and weaknesses. We also make clear we do not advocate the illegal use of AI to infringe on the literary artist's creative works. We do try to predict the future which may include platforms like Amazon and Google imposing their technologies and policies on self-published writers. It's a complex issue, and we encourage you to check out Arnie's, Kendall's, and this podcast before flaming us.

Our mission here at the "CC & JT Amateur Hour" is to "help writers write," and part of our madness is to publicly examine our creative motivations. We talk about our motivations, challenges, and prejudices about our characters having sex in our books. We go deep and, as always, CC and I learn something new about each other, even after 40+ years of intimate monogamy. We ask our fellows writers to chime in on the subject: how far do your character go, and why or why not do you go there? Happy holidays to all who engage in joy and frivolity at this time of year which, considering the number of celebrations there are, means everyone. We're back from West Sacramento after Thanksgiving with the relations, something we're always happy to do. Added bonus: the trip gave us the topic of this week's podcast: getting outside of our comfort zones.Writers are very much creatures of habits, so sometimes our complacency needs a kick in the pants. For us, that meant two nights in the Embassy Suites where they wait on you hand and foot. We're so used to taking care of ourselves at hotels, so to have someone park our car and carry our luggage was surreal. But busting out of comfort zones gives writers material for their books and maybe, just maybe, fresh energy for their manuscript. On the Nevada Author Network, Nikolai Wisekal discusses the critical decision authors face between writing for creativity and pursuing publishing. He notes publishing is basically a professional promise between a business and a reader, bringing with it their expectations and demands. Creativity, on the other hand, is literary art for the author, allowing the writer to have total freedom over cover art, the manuscript, and associated work products such as blurbs.Nikolai also spends time on the business of releasing chapters via a membership service such as Patreon and the now defunct Amazon Vella. He outlines why releasing chapters one at a time to subscribers can be a challenge, especially to readers who are used to having the entire book in their hands. The podcast closes with an in-depth discussion on how writers can be successful at book signings. In this episode of our award-winning podcast where we "help writers write," we talk at length about the power of writing a series.Frankly, I never intended to write a series and, in fact, was adamant against them because I felt them to be constricting. I like the "freewheeling" feeling of creating new universes, but then there's a price for creating interesting characters. Readers always want to know what happens to them. Even when I finished the complete "Serving Salvation" trilogy, I got requests for Book Four (face palm). We discuss the pros and cons of doing a series, including the financial cost.Related to that was our talk about the success of our 99¢ sales. We have set the price of Book One of our seven series at that low prices, and the readers responded. At this time, we've only made the change to the Amazon e-books, but we're going to expand that to the other major platforms (Apple, B&N, Google, and Kobo). We'll report back on the results. We chatted about our appearance at the Reno Barnes and Noble, which did not turn out as we had hoped. We did get to watch and talk to people, and CC got all purtified and everything as you can see from the above picture. We'll be at Comma Coffee in downtown Carson City on Veterans Day, Tuesday, November 11, 2025, beginning at 9:00am.
