This Wednesday episode dives headlong into issues Brendan and Andy have with the WGC Swampass Invitational presented by Initech. News of Shane Lowry’s withdrawal and a smaller field of just 63 players is used as a jumping off point to illustrate all the ways in which they think it’s a bad idea. They give great praise and deference to the people of and town of Memphis, despite some sensitivities about the criticisms of this event, which have nothing to do with the actual city. Are the WGCS still viable as a competition or does the competition not matter? Then they move to the opposite field event in Reno, where it feels like the field took just one charter flight together from the Barbasol in Kentucky last week. They discuss how opposite field events build their rosters and the changes coming next year. Andy then gets into some FedExCup bubble boys with this now being the moment in the calendar when it truly matters. Andy tells a Brandel story on the occasion of his making the Senior Open and critique why the LPGA and Champions tours are having majors in the same week. We wrap with some more thoughts on illegal hot drivers and feedback we’re getting about the scant testing that exists.

But 1999 audiences (who loved films like American Beauty and The Matrix) sure didn't, as the film was a box office flop. A lot has changed in the two decades since we all discovered TPS reports and suffered through the agony of being named Michael Bolton in the 1990s. Mike Judge's classic, Office Space is now 20 years old, so we thought this would be a great opportunity to revisit this touchstone workplace drama. Listen to the nineties hardcore gangsta rap that the repressed and nerdy software engineers of Initech held near and dear to their hearts. In 1999, office workers everywhere rejoiced as Mike Judge’s satire of a few weeks in the life of a software development company.  Made for only $10 mil, Office space was a box office disappointment, making only $12 million, but the geniuses of Comedy Central aired the movie regularly, and a loyal fan base saw to it that all of their friends and family saw this silly but strangely accurate comedy, making it a cult classic.  With memorable lines and characters, Office Space appeals to basically anyone with a job, and though the technology is now dated, the core satire of the work place, overbearing and out of the loop management, and efficiency consultants coming in to lay off staff still plays out today.  But does it hold up?  Listen as Jon, Colin and Brent show up for work at Initech and see if they praise this movie, sweet talk the Bob’s, keep their jobs, and maybe even get promoted, or if the movie’s purpose is unclear and it deserves to be let go along with our hopes and dreams for a better workplace.

  Peter doesn't like his job.  He works as a pencil pusher at a computer company called Initech.  After making a particularly egregious error, he decides that he needs to undergo hypnosis to cure him of his spiritual dyspepsia.  A mishap involving his treatment sets the stage for this classic comedy. Writer/director Mike Judge depicts the bleak rat race so many of us find ourselves caught up in, despite our intelligence and capacity to dream.  Corporate culture is skewered in "Office Space", and yet it all seems perfectly realistic and within the realm of possibility.  One of the best American comedies of the '90's and an all-time high portrait of white collar drudgery, Judge's comedy manages to win over the common man with it's underdog portrayal of average people who deserve better but due to a poor economy, are stuck with a soul-crushing job that demeans them.  Kristy, a frequent contributor to our listener requests, joins the conversation for this episode.
