It's a thriller that explores how science's hidden risks can turn deadly when ambition overrides caution. In this episode, you'll discover:The astonishing chemistry behind a color-restoring formula that could change millions of livesHow a murder charge hinges on the mysterious absence of a body—and the clever story that nearly gets away with itThe psychological and physiological risks of experiencing color for the first time—and the dangers they poseThe intricate web of deception, from secret formulas to staged murders at a remote meat houseWhy missing bodies, cleverly planted clues, and strategic lies matter more than you think in solving this deadly mysteryThis isn't just a tale of science and crime—it's a vivid reminder that innovation always carries risks, and the line between genius and danger is razor-thin. If you're fascinated by the dark side of scientific discovery or love stories where every detail counts, this episode will keep you on the edge of your seat. The U.S. Supreme Court's ruling in Louisiana v. Callais could be one of—if not the—deciding factor in who controls the House moving forward. The ruling is monumental because it struck down an interpretation of the Voting Rights Act that has, for decades now, forced southern states to draw up congressional maps in a way that maximizes the black vote.If you look at the congressional map, districts in these states have been drawn in strange ways because they've been forced by the courts to connect disparate pockets of black neighborhoods. However, this has just been ruled to be unconstitutional, and the states in question—many of whom actually have Republican state legislatures—are now free for the first time in decades to redraw their congressional maps without concern for the racial makeup of the people living there. The reason this truly matters is that the black vote is overwhelmingly Democratic-leaning. Meaning, the districts in question, the ones that are likely to get redrawn, could be flipped from blue-leaning to red-leaning.Let's unpack this story in three steps: the legal framework that was in place for the past several decades, the Supreme Court's new ruling, and then what this means moving forward—including which specific districts are likely to get amended.

Weekly Roundup: The Death of Voting Rights: SCOTUS, Alito, and the Colorblind Myth

In this week's solo roundup, Dan Miller deconstructs a series of aggressive maneuvers by the 47th administration designed to codify Christian nationalism into federal policy. The centerpiece is the newly released report from the Anti-Christian Bias Task Force, an entity Dan argues serves less as a shield for religious freedom and more as a sword against civil rights. By framing standard anti-discrimination protections as inherent attacks on the faith, the administration is effectively creating a legal "red meat" pipeline for its base. This ideological shift is mirrored in the judicial branch, where the Supreme Court's ruling in Louisiana v. Calle effectively "guts" the remains of the Voting Rights Act. Dan traces the lineage of Justice Alito's "colorblind" rhetoric back to the Roberts Court, highlighting how the judicial insistence on ignoring race is being weaponized to dismantle Black political representation and broader DEI initiatives. The episode further explores the chilling effect of "MAGA-style" free speech, highlighting the selective weaponization of federal agencies against cultural and political critics. From the FCC's retaliatory pressure on ABC following a Jimmy Kimmel monologue to the surreal indictment of James Comey over a seashell photo, Miller illustrates a pattern of using law enforcement as a tool for personal grievance. On the border, the administration continues its push for a "White America" through restrictive new visa affirmations and a cynical rebranding of ICE to "NICE"—a move Dan describes as a superficial mask for an agency defined by family separations and systemic harm. However, the episode closes on a note of strategic optimism: as the 2026 midterm elections loom, the GOP's fixation on cultural grievances over economic affordability suggests a political vulnerability that could shift the national tide. The Katherine Massey Book Club @ The C.O.W.S. hosts the second study session on Michelle Alexander's The New Jim Crow: Mass Incarceration In the Age of Colorblindness. Alexander is a non-white female with one White parent and one non-white parent. Despite 15 years of institutional celebration, Gus T. anticipates this being one of the **10 Worst Books Ever**. Racists generally do not promote literature that provides an accurate understanding of the System of White Supremacy. **Deception by Omission**: Any book that claims to seriously explore prisons and Racism, yet fails to include COINTELPRO, Chicago's Jon Burge, or the profitability of caging black dudes is deliberately lying to readers. Last week's review included: 1. The 10th Anniversary Preface: We analyzed Alexander's claim that the book was a "slow success," despite its eventual and consistent promotion by the System. 2. **Black Misandry**: We thanked Alexander for mentioning that she's often asked why she focused on the caging of black males exclusively - echoing the routine hostility and/or resistance to discussing black males as Victims of White Supremacy. 3. The "**We**" Trap: We examined Alexander's use of the pronoun "we," which lumps Victims of White Supremacy and Racists into one general collective, masking the reality of who is doing the caging. 4. The Skip Gates Incident: We corrected the record on the 2009 arrest of Dr. Henry Louis Gates and the White response that forced President Obama to "recalibrate" his assessment of the arresting White officer. Send us Fan MailREPRISE - When Ken researched his Bible School classmate, Melvin Warren, he stumbled across Dr. Curtis' book. It referenced a familiar, legendary press conference. In 1970, at the famed Arch entrance at the Moody Bible Institute in Chicago, Melvin made a speech as the cameras rolled and journalists scribbled notes. He claimed that the school's racism so marred his experience as a student that he tore up his diploma and tossed it into the trash. He made national news. That incident not only drove Ken into a years-long quest to understand the dynamic of racism in his white evangelical church but it also played significantly into the doctoral dissertation of another Moody grad, Dr. Jesse Curtis. Dr. Curtis is now an assistant professor at Valparaiso University. Ken and Jesse compare notes on that momentous event. It prompted Ken's Beached White Male journey. It also contributed to Dr. Curtis' doctoral focus - now a book considered a “must-read” by both Jemar Tisby and Kristin Kobes du Mez. Ken and Jese discuss The Myth of Colorblind Christians: Evangelicals and White Supremacy in the Civil Rights Era.Dr. Curtis covers the history of racism in the white evangelical church, going back to the Billy Graham era, when Howard Jones became the first African American evangelist on “The Team.” Jesse believes that the Church Growth Movement, founded by Donald McGavran, contributed to the segregation that was a feature in the explosive growth of the church at the turn of the century - including “ethnic” congregations and mega-churches. McGavran's protege, C. Peter Wagner, added fuel to that dynamic. In their wide-ranging discussion, they talk about evangelical super-stars like Rick Warren and Bill Hybels as well as champions like Bill Pannell, Tom Skinner, and John Perkins. Curtis argues that the notion of “colorblind Christians” is a myth. While he wrote some five years ago, the case is as relevant as ever. Just this week, in his inaugural address, the 47th President stated, “We will forge a society that is colorblind…” His supporters stood in enthusiastic applause. Ken and Jesse agree: this is not progress. SHOW NOTESFirst Aired JAN 2025Support the showBecome a Patron - Click on the link to learn how you can become a Patron of the show. In this episode of Home in Progress, Dan Hansen tackles three practical home topics that can quietly make or break your projects.First: Caulking before painting.Fresh paint exposes every gap your house has developed over time. Dan explains exactly where to caulk (baseboards, trim-to-wall joints, crown molding lines, built-ins, chair rail edges) — and where not to caulk (nail holes, drywall cracks, miter joints, floating cabinet panels). Using the wrong product in the wrong place can cause failure later. He also shares a tip on faster paint-ready caulks for projects on a tight timeline.Next: Laundry room flow upgrades.Dan continues his laundry efficiency series by focusing on two key zones: the processing zone (wash/dry) and the folding zone. He explains why vertical storage prevents bottlenecks, why detergents should usually stay in their original containers, and how to create a folding station that doesn't interfere with servicing your machines. Smart layout beats pretty décor every time. Finally: Choosing paint colors for someone who is colorblind.Dan clears up myths about colorblindness (it's rarely black-and-white vision) and explains how value, contrast, texture, and lighting matter more than hue. He offers practical design strategies and real-world examples to help homeowners make confident color decisions that work for everyone in the house.Resources Mentioned:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zNnCafjjgBwEpisode Timeline:00:00 Welcome + What's Coming Up (Colorblind Paint Picks & Laundry Room Upgrades)01:13 Why Caulking Matters Before You Paint02:33 Where to Caulk: Baseboards, Casings, Crown & Built-Ins04:22 Where NOT to Caulk: Nail Holes, Miters & Drywall Cracks06:21 Cabinet Door Trap: Floating Panels vs MDF (When Caulk Fails)07:39 Quick Sponsor Tip: Fast-Paint Caulk Deal (Tower Sealants Accelerator)08:19 Laundry Rooms Part 2: Processing Zone & Workflow Setup10:17 Use Vertical Space: Shelves, Hooks, Pegboard Above Machines11:45 Detergent Storage Reality Check: Don't Decant (Safety, Instructions, Effectiveness)16:21 If You Must Decant: Do It Safely + Extra Storage Hacks (Doors, Carts, Tension Rods)19:18 Laundry Room Flow: Clear Counters & Create a Folding Zone21:59 Why Folding Elsewhere Breaks the System (Dining Table, Living Room, Dogs)24:49 DIY Folding Stations: Countertops for Front-Loaders & Hinged Options for Top-Loaders26:50 Don't Build It In: Modular Counters, Machine Access & Water Hookups27:48 Air-Dry Solutions: Racks, Retractable Lines & Space-Saving Ideas29:23 Sponsor Break + Listener Question: Choosing Paint Colors for Colorblindness30:29 Colorblindness 101: Myths, Types, and How Common It Really Is34:37 Designing for Color Vision Deficiency: Value, Contrast, Texture, Lighting38:13 Real-World Example + Wrap-Up: Smarter Color Choices and Final Sign-Off

Christian faith has been politicized. Arguably, this is not new. But what we see in America and other societies has a jarring impact for those who seek a credible public Christian faith. To examine how Christian faith has been politicized in recent years, preacher and public theologian Jonathan Wilson-Hartgrove joins Mark Labberton, asking what moral resistance requires in this authoritarian moment. "I couldn't know Jesus in the fullness of who Jesus is without integrating faith and justice." In this episode: Wilson-Hartgrove reflects on his Southern Baptist formation, his political awakening, and a conversion that reordered his understanding of Jesus, justice, and public life. And: Trying to understand Christian nationalism, authoritarian power, poverty and race, moral fusion movements, just war theology, the discipline of prayer, and how churches can reclaim biblical values for the common good. Episode Highlights "I couldn't know Jesus in the fullness of who Jesus is without integrating faith and justice." "The radical separation of faith from justice was a way my faith was stolen from me." "We are in an authoritarian crisis that tells its own version of reality." "Christian nationalism offers an alternative reality that very sincere people come to trust." "Prayer interrupts the liturgy of consumerism and gives us another story." About Jonathan Wilson-Hartgrove Jonathan Wilson-Hartgrove is an author, preacher, and public theologian working at the intersection of Christian faith, moral movements, and public life. He serves as Assistant Director of the Yale Center for Public Theology and Public Policy and has spent more than two decades in faith-rooted movements for social change. A longtime collaborator with Bishop William J. Barber II, he has helped articulate the Moral Movement's moral framing of poverty, race, and democracy. There's no such thing as a neutral reading of the Bible. Every reading is inflected by first-person experience, cultural context, history, and more. In this episode, biblical scholars Janette Ok and Jordan J. Ryan join Mark Labberton to reflect on The New Testament in Color, a groundbreaking new biblical commentary that brings together diverse voices across racial, cultural, and social locations. They share how their own ethnic and cultural backgrounds as Asian American and Filipino Canadian readers shaped their understanding of Scripture, the importance of social location, using the creeds as guardrails for hermeneutics, and how contextual interpretation deepens biblical authority rather than diminishing it. Episode Highlights “There is no such thing as a neutral reading of the Bible.” —Mark Labberton “It really dawned on me the importance of being aware of who I am, my family background, my history in the United States, all these things.” —Janette Ok “Filipinos I think are always sort of on the margins… trying to understand how Asian we really are or aren't.” —Jordan J. Ryan “Objectivity is nothing more than the fruit of authentic subjectivity.” —Jordan J. Ryan quoting Bernard Lonergan “Colorblindness is actually something that's not true… particularity is fundamental to the gospel.” —Janette Ok “It was one of the most freeing experiences that I've had because it finally gave me permission to do the thing that I'd always wanted to do.” —Jordan J. About Jordan Ryan Jordan Ryan is associate professor of New Testament at Wheaton College and Graduate School, and author of The Role of the Synagogue in the Aims of Jesus and From the Passion to the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. His research explores Acts, archaeology, and Filipino American biblical interpretation. Biblical authority and the living word Biblical authority as central: “It's why I teach at Wheaton College and not somewhere else.” “When we say the Bible is the living Word of God… it means it has to speak to us today.” Preachers already contextualize every Sunday; The New Testament in Color makes this explicit and communal New Testament in Color was initiated by Esau McCaulley in 2018 Preceded by works like True to Our Native Land and Women's Bible Commentary Distinctive by gathering scholars from African American, Latino, Asian American, Native American, and European American backgrounds in one volume Goal: Embody diversity without sacrificing particularity or biblical trust. Email us: Will@faithfulpoliticspodcast.comIn 1954, white Southern churches declared that school integration “defied God's design.” Seven decades later, many of those congregations champion “color-blindness” instead. What changed—and what hasn't? Historian Rusty Hawkins (Indiana Wesleyan University), co-editor of The Bible Told Them So: How Southern Evangelicals Fought to Preserve White Supremacy, joins Faithful Politics to trace the theological through-line from Jim Crow sermons to modern debates over CRT and DEI. Hawkins explains how pastors and laypeople alike used Scripture to sanctify segregation, then re-branded the same resistance as a fight for “quality education” and “parental choice.” He also argues that today's church can still become a force for racial reconciliation—if it learns from the prophetic witness of the Black church and rejects power for service. Whether you're a pastor, activist, or history buff, this conversation equips you with the receipts—and the hope—to confront racism's religious roots.Guest BioRusty Hawkins is Associate Professor of History at Indiana Wesleyan University, specializing in American religion and race. He co-edited the award-winning The Bible Told Them So and is currently writing a religious biography of Alabama Governor George Wallace. Hawkins's scholarship appears in Christianity Today, the Journal of Southern Religion, and other outlets, making him a leading voice on how evangelical theology has shaped—and been shaped by—America's color line. Part 1 The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat and Other Clinical Tales by Oliver Sacks Summary"The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat and Other Clinical Tales" is a collection of case studies written by neurologist Oliver Sacks. In this book, Sacks presents a series of fascinating and often poignant stories about patients with various neurological disorders. Each case sheds light on the complexities of the human brain and the profound ways in which neurological conditions can affect perception, identity, and behavior. Key Themes and Case Studies:The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat The title case features Dr. P, a music teacher who suffers from visual agnosia, which prevents him from recognizing faces and objects. He confuses his wife with a hat due to his inability to perceive visual cues correctly. This case illustrates the disconnect that can occur between perception and reality. The Lost Mariner This story centers around Jimmie G., a man who is stuck in time, believing it is 1945. Despite being in a care facility in the 1970s, he cannot retain new memories. Sacks explores themes of identity and the importance of memory in constructing the self.To See and Not See This case features a patient who has undergone a surgical procedure to restore vision but struggles to interpret visual information. It raises questions about the relationship between seeing and understanding, emphasizing that vision alone does not guarantee comprehension. The Dog Who Loved Too Much This case recounts the story of a man whose intense attachment to his dog leads to behavioral problems. It explores themes of love, dependence, and the emotional dimensions of neurological conditions.Phantoms Several patients report experiencing sensory phantom limbs after amputations. Sacks delves into the neural underpinnings behind these phenomena and discussions surrounding body image and consciousness. Overall Structure:The book is divided into several sections that group cases thematically, examining aspects like memory, perception, and personal identity. Sacks uses rich narratives to humanize the clinical experiences of his patients and invites readers to empathize with their struggles while exploring complex neurological issues. Conclusion:In "The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat," Sacks not only provides insights into neurological disorders but also reflects on the broader questions of what it means to be human. The book emphasizes the delicate interplay between mind, body, and self, highlighting the unique struggles faced by individuals living with neurological conditions.Part 2 The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat and Other Clinical Tales AuthorOliver Sacks was a British neurologist and author known for his writings that explored the intricacies of the human brain and mental disorders. He was born on July 9, 1933, and passed away on August 30, 2015. In this episode of Passing Judgment, Jessica examines a pivotal voting rights case before the Supreme Court concerning Louisiana's congressional district lines. The case touches on the conflict between the Voting Rights Act and the 14th Amendment's Equal Protection Clause. Jessica reviews the legal arguments, reflects on past decisions like Shelby County, and explores the case's broader implications. Here are three key takeaways you don't want to miss:Voting Rights Act and Supreme Court Case: Jessica Levinson delves into a Supreme Court case concerning the Voting Rights Act, highlighting a challenge over Louisiana's congressional districting. The essential question is whether the state violated the Act by diluting voting power or violated the Fourteenth Amendment by using race excessively in district creation.Louisiana District Lines Controversy: After the census, Louisiana's district lines came under scrutiny for having only one majority minority district, leading to lawsuits. The state later redrew the map to include two majority minority districts, sparking a new suit from non-African American voters claiming the excessive use of race in drawing these lines.Fourteenth Amendment and Equal Protection Clause: The tension between complying with the Voting Rights Act and the constraints of the Fourteenth Amendment's Equal Protection Clause is a major theme. The conversation touches on recent affirmative action cases, emphasizing the court's perspective that race should not be the predominant factor.Follow Our Host and Guest: @LevinsonJessica
