Tread Perilously's '80s flashback month concludes with an episode of The Love Boat called "Miss Mom/Who's the Champ/Gopher's Delusion" The Pacific Princess's latest Mexican coast sailing comes with a twist -- a wrestling match between "Lover Boy" Bob and Thomas 'The Mangler' Sharkey. The promoter even retained the services of Terry "Hulk" Hogan to do ringside commentary! But when The Mangler's sister has a lovely interaction with Lover Boy, will it turn the kayfabe into a serious grudge? Meanwhile, Cruise Director Judy tries to find a man for her cousin, Gretchen -- and potentially succeeds -- even as Gopher is hypnotized into believing he is Captain Stubing. Justin finally faces an episode of The Love Boat. Erik pitches guest actor Tim Rossovich for the other version of Superman III that never got made. Both are surprised by the show's anthology structure. The presence of the Hulkster, and Caitlyn Jenner as one of the wrestlers, leads down certain directions -- including an appreciation of "Macho Man" Randy Savage. A wild Teri Hatcher appears! The old Navy Seals joke gets dissected. The myth of Ted McGinley is also addressed. Erik identifies a couple of guest stars from their Star Trek: The Next Generation appearances. Jenner's 1980s hairstyle gets dubbed "the Pete Rose" and Erik realizes a startling connection between Gopher and Star Trek's Pavel Chekhov.

Ilya Salkind is one of the movie's executive producers that started the superhero genre. Superman: The Movie in 1978 taught audiences that you can believe a man can fly. Salkind's father Alexander acquired the rights to make the movie, and its sequels, Superman II and Superman III. He also exec-produced 1984's Supergirl starring Helen Slater. In this episode, Salkind gives an in-depth conversation about making those movies. He discussed casting Christopher Reeve, Margot Kidder, Gene Hackman, and the legendary Marlon Brando. He also revealed that there was a draft of a never-made Superman V. Entitled Superman Reborn, this script was performed recently as a stage reading, the audio of which will be featured in next week's podcast episode. Salkind explains how the idea of doing the reading came to be, and how he uncovered the draft of Superman Reborn. Proceeds from the reading went to the Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation. EPISODE 8 - A Sharped Dressed Man - “They Are A Little Sweaty”Greetings Super friends! Welcome to Superman & Lois & Pals. I'm Henry Bernstein and alongside me is my favorite super pal, Professor Sam Brody. Let's talk about Superman & Lois Season 4, Episode 8 - A Sharp Dressed ManDirected by:Michael Kudlitz (Lex Luthor)Written By:Brent Fletcher and Todd HelbingThe Apple TV and Imdb description is: Luthor challenges Lois to a live telecast debate, though not everything is as it seems; John Henry and Clark face a troubling possibility.Henry's Notes:Luthor doing an interview, fitted for suit and CLEAN SHAVEN. He looks like Lex Luthor. Great revealMilton reference again. “After today the whole world will be on your side” with a Luthor smileSo the DOD hangs out at his house which is different than usual? So now Clark doesn't wear the glasses and I miss it!Cancer call back. “They are a little sweaty”This is really good. Not just pretending this story never happened. THis is what really happens in families dealing with Cancer.YAY!!! Lois is Cancer free. BAZOOMBAS is back! Why haven't Nat and John Henry cleaned up their bunker?Yes! Steel covering for Superman. That's how it's supposed to go! I love seeing Steel not just blast things but actually rescue someone. TOM CAVANAGH IS G GORDON GODFREY!!!!!!This is amazing. My absolute favorite guy. This is great that Luthor is going on tv and spinning/lying. This is so classic. I love this. Oh my god, even spinning why he brought Lexcorp to Smallville. Clark is right trying to get Lois not take the bait. I like that he had a solution and not just a don't do it. “Let's go to the office”“Now that everybody knows I can fly”Candice broke up with Jonathan and my reaction was “haha good.”While I don't care that much about Candice, the reason she broke up with Jonathan makes sense. But I definitely don't care about a rom-com last second confession of love“I'm the Costanza of relationships”So Amanda is in love with Lex. There's precedence for unrequited love with Lex. I'm dying to know who MILTON is. At this point they won't stop talking about Milton. “Feels like we're working in a fishbowl”What do you think about Lois' thing being not only the spelling thing but she swears in her writing?“We flew here together” Interesting that Clark is losing his hearing.Do you think the series will end with Clark losing all his powers, being a regular guy and the boys taking over?Oh that's really interesting that he has heart disease. Clark now has basically what Lois had last season. Is Luthor just absolutely disgusted with humanity? Or does he have some heightened senses or something? His spidey sense is tingling.Do Lois and Amanda have history?Love hearing Tom Cavanagh say, “Superman, Superman”I love that he did the glasses bit. Lois is on defense, this is a set up duh. “I think the circumstances speak for themselves”Why are they obsessed with Jaimie Kennedy the mid-2000s comedian who maybe also had a prank show?“It's being a carnival barker”Brainiac time baby. Now we're getting into the endgame. Will we get the full blown version? It's kind of weird that we've never seen this guy before and now he's an ultimate mastermind. This is an amazing action sequence. Love the heat vision from both sides. That was nutsSuperman keeps his wedding ring on now. Nice touch. Confirmed and canonical in this show that the ONLY way they got news about Superman was from Lois?Damn, Godfrey just made an enemy in Lois Lane. Sexy LexyLex Luthor ISN'T a computer genius“Mr. Gorman from our world” - That's a GUS GORMAN reference from Superman III. God I love this show.So Superman, is “terminal.”Great shot of the family together at the tableIf Milton is going to be taken seriously, we've gotta get some back story and motivation.“Now that's a killer suit” - they better paint it green and purple otherwise what's the point. Is Superman dying or is it that his powers are failing? It's time for a much needed review of Superman II and Superman III. We go into and beyond both movies.
It's a bird! It's a plane! It's an all-new episode of Podcast Part 3: The Part 3 Podcast! And it's a DC Comics double feature as Will and Sam take on the very silly Superman III, aka Superman meets Richard Pryor. And if that's not enough, they're also talking about the deeply frustrating and problematic Superman Returns. While the Man of Steel takes on Brainiac (kind of), Bizarro (not really) and Lex Luthor (canceled), the boys discuss the bumpy cinematic journey of the most iconic superhero of all time, question the damage Five for Fighting has done to the Superman brand, and Sam offers his recasting of Superman Returns with the best that 2006 Hollywood has to offer. Welcome to the first episode of It All Comes Back to Superman Series Two, the pretty much the same, not really all that new reaffirmation of my Kryptonian faith. I am your host, Michael Bailey, and this time out I am starting a two part series celebrating Superman's 85th anniversary because...I really want to. It's just that simple. For this first installment I do an off the cuff solo episode where I talk about six of the sub-anniversaries happening during Superman's 85th. Superman The Movie, Superman III, the Ruby Spear Superman animated series, the live action Superboy series, Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman, and Man of Steel all have big anniversaries this year and I thought it would be fun to go through them all in one shot instead of devoting specific episodes to them for...reasons. Various reasons. Reasons I go through during the episode itself. I mentioned during the episode that I had done a commentary for Superman The Movie back in 2013. That was on episode 153 of Views From The Longbox, which I don't have a handy link to...sadly...because the post with the show notes for that episode no longer exists. Views is readily available on just about all podcatching services, so it should be easy to find. For those interested, episode 155 of Views was a commentary for Superman II and episode 162 was the commentary for Superman IV that I did with Scott Gardner. Not to be outdone, if you search for episode 135 of the Palace of Glittering Delights where Andy Leyland had me on to yak over the "coherence cut" of Superman IV. This 80's flick is more than just a vehicle for laughs; it's a biting satire that skewers societal norms and exposes the fault lines of privilege and inequality. Its significance lies in using humor as a Trojan horse for razor-sharp commentary, causing audiences to laugh and reflect on the absurdity of the disparities between the haves and the have-nots. As we revisit this holiday cult classic, we will celebrate not only the impeccable comedic timing of its top-notch cast but also the film's ability to tackle weighty social issues with a lighthearted touch. Whether it's the memorable scenes in the commodities exchange, the rowdy party at Winthorpe's townhouse, or the unforgettable New Year's Eve train ride, it still holds up as a great example of satirical comedy that has an impact beyond its time. So, look over your pork belly futures, dust off your “quart of blood” karate technique, and try not to misplace your guerrilla costume as Tim Williams and guest co-host, Tyra Williams, discuss “Trading Places” from 1983 on this episode of the 80s Flick Flashback Podcast. Here are some additional behind-the-scenes trivia we were unable to cover in this episode: In his mug shot scene in the movie "Trading Places," Dan Aykroyd's character Louis Winthorpe III is given a number, 74745058, which happens to be the same number given to John Belushi's character Jake Blues in "The Blues Brothers (1980)." This was done intentionally by Aykroyd as a tribute to Belushi, who had passed away the year before. In Italy, on the night of Christmas Eve, a local TV channel Italia 1 broadcasts the movie "Trading Places", which has become a popular Christmas tradition. This is similar to the way the movie "A Christmas Story" is played on a continuous loop in the United States on December 24th and 25th. Along with "Trading Places", the tradition also includes airing of other movies like the first three "Home Alone" films, "Jack Frost", and "A Nightmare Before Christmas". During the summer of 1983, which lasted from June to September, the movie industry expected to surpass the previous year's record-breaking $1.4 billion in theater ticket sales. The season included highly anticipated films such as "Return of the Jedi" (the third installment in the Star Wars series), "Superman III", and the latest James Bond movie, "Octopussy". More than 40 movies were scheduled for release over the 16-week period, so studios had to carefully plan their release schedules to avoid competing with each other. Paramount Studios decided to release "Trading Places" at the beginning of the summer, so it could benefit from being in theaters longer during the busy season. Comedy movies were considered a counterprogramming strategy that attracted audiences who had already seen or were not interested in the major film releases, which were mainly focused on science-fiction and superheroes. "Trading Places" was released between "Return of the Jedi" in May and "Superman III" in mid-June. Although sequels were expected to perform well due to their built-in audience, "Trading Places" was predicted to be successful thanks to its talented cast. Technically the first ever quadruple-bill episode (if you also count the Richard Donner cut of Superman II, which we do), as voted for by Patrons of this podcast for, on the history and legacy of Episode Title ! The sequels to the previous episode on SupermanSUPERMAN II was inevitable after Richard Donner completed 75% of the movie, filmed at the same time as Superman (1978). His work on the sequel was halted during Superman's production, but as Superman flew into the box office and became a critical and financial success, the sequel was fired up again... and Donner himself was unceremoniously fired from the movie by the Salkinds, and replaced with Richard Lester; a move that didn't go down well with the cast and crew... SUPERMAN II: THE RICHARD DONNER CUT came about due to the open secret of Richard Donner's material existing in a vault somewhere. After a few legal issues, notably with the estate of Marlon Brando for the production of Superman Returns, a new 2001 DVD version of Superman also led to the discovery of 6 tonnes of unused, previously lost material shot by Richard Donner for Superman II. In an unprecedented (at the time) fan campaign to see Donner's cut, it was finally released to acclaim in 2006...SUPERMAN III is less of a Superman movie, and more of a comedy vehicle for the late, great Richard Pryor, but that didn't mean it was easy to get made. A lot of people were still annoyed at the Salkinds for their treatment of Richard Donner, including Christopher Reeve himself. Reeve almost didn't return as the iconic character, but changed his mind and relished playing Superman vs Superman (which was also almost the title of the movie), but in retrospect it would be a movie he wouldn't have too much fun with, despite the slapstick tone... SUPERMAN IV: THE QUEST FOR PEACE would only be made after the Salkinds sold the rights to The Cannon Group; a production company known for making low quality movies en masse to make as much profit as possible. Cannon's plan though was big franchises: they bought Superman with the intent of spending $36 million on Superman IV. They were also making Masters of the Universe, the first big screen adventure for He-Man. But Masters of the Universe's financial woes would drastically affect Superman IV, with disastrous consequences for the Superman franchise, and leading to a 19-year wait for Superman to return...I would love to hear your thoughts on Superman II, Superman II: The Richard Donner Cut, Superman III & Superman IV: The Quest for Peace !CONTACT.... As Mikey, d$, and #XLessDrEarl get set for Episode 600, the Deucecast Movie Show is releasing a series of "milestone" episodes, including the first ReFlicktions ep (#130) last week, and this week, Episode 300. Aside from the RetroZap Podcasting Network bumper being taken off the front, and the stinger added to the end, the episode itself is here in it's entirety, as it was released on October 25th, 2017. Here are the original notes (and the original post): After many years and many late nights, Mikey, Pinky and Dave ring in the 300th episode of The Deucecast Movie Show. First, the guys say hello to Producer Shawn and Lady Pinky (and then bye, as they leave quickly), and invite in Friend of the Show Wit Stillman Fan, Film Historian, Terrance Malick Apologist, Brie Fan (Allison, Larsen & Cheese) and World Renowned Proctimologist Dr Earl... And then, the Cavalcade of Stars begins! Shazbazzar, co-host of the TechnoRetro Dads podcast, joins the crew with some of his favorite films, including the original animated Lord of the Rings film, WarGames and the dangerous, unaccountable teenagers from the 1980s. Plus, the first ever mention of "Rock & Rule". When Remodeling Clay finally gets on the line, the gang plays an old school game of "Reel or Unreel", aka, "Faux or Show". Plus an update on Clay's favorite films and a few documentary recommendations that we all have to see. The Retrozap dot com Podcasting Network Podfather Retro Joe then comes on to discuss some of his favorite films, including Army of Darkness, Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure, and Ghostbusters. Plus a discussion on Patriots Day, which took place around Joe's neck of the woods. And with Retro Joe, a great round of Box Office Mojo on "Third Films in a Series". To wrap up the Cavalcade of Stars, Jennifer Kaufman brings up some of her favorites she's seen this year, with Spotlight, A Fish Called Wanda and more. Pinky then riffs on an assigned film, "Audition", one of those "Most disturbing movies ever made!" More crap on Superman III and then, a throwback to an early sponsor of the show, Real Men of Genius. To you, the listener and film fan, thanks so much for downloading, listening, and being a fan!
