A must-add for any Halloween watchlist: The Blair Witch Project (1999) gets the full Cutting Deep into Horror treatment with hosts Henrique Couto & Rachael Redolfi, diving into why this low-budget phenomenon rewired horror audiences and turbo-charged found-footage storytelling. We unpack its unsettling folklore, improvisational performances, and the way fear, survival, and group dynamics collapse in the Burkittsville woods. Directed by Daniel Myrick & Eduardo Sánchez, this cult landmark still crawls under the skin more than two decades later. Inside this episodeInto the Woods — Setting the stage: Burkittsville mythos and mood. The Horror of Found Footage — Why vérité camera work amplifies dread. The Blair Witch Legacy — How a micro-budget classic changed horror. Early Found-Footage Roots — What came before—and what Blair perfected. Rustin Parr & Local Lore — Myth-building that feels dangerously real. The Disappearing Map → The House in the Woods → Final Confrontation — Beat-by-beat tension to that chilling last image. Theories & Interpretations — Time loops, ritual hints, and ambiguous terror. For their Audience Interrogation cycle "Close Up" episode, Emilio, Julian and Madeline hit record and explore a genre that they are, admittedly, not as familiar with: Found Footage Films. They are joined by writer/director/teacher/musician Shaun Seneviratne, a fellow cinephile whose been historically lukewarm on Found Footage films, but enthusiastic to dive in and open minded to the ways this filmmaking style can tell unique, cinematic stories. The group selects three representative films from different eras. First, they unpack 1999's 'The Blair Witch Project', considered the codifier of the genre, and note how the film balances a growing sense of unease with naturalistic, improvised acting and dialogue. Then they discuss Patrick Brice's 2014 film 'Creep', its unavoidable connection to mumblecore, and the ways it intentionally plays with long-standing horror tropes. They complete the conversation digging into 'Searching', Aneesh Chaganty's 2018 screen life thriller that concerns itself with the finding of footage, and manages to capture emotion and intention through computer use in surprisingly effective ways. Shaun Seneviratne can be found and followed on the socials at thebrownshaunHis feature film 'Ben and Suzanne: A Reunion in 4 Parts' is streaming now on Fandor and available for rent on digital. A huge part of video game history is context. Context surrounding a game's development, context surrounding a game's release, context of the time and place the game was made during. Context informs how we interpret the past. This week on the show I am joined by author and journalist Ross Benes to talk about his book "1999: The Year Low Culutre Conquered America and Kickstarted Our Bizarre Times." We discuss what about the late 90's has informed so much of our present, how that culture affected the games that came out and how the games themselves were part of that percieved "low culture" at the time. There is so much more in his book worth diving into but I felt like this was a good introduction for ya'll to see what Ross has written. Episode 332. In this mind-bending episode of The Lenny Reed Pod, we dive deep into one of the wildest internet theories floating around: that We all Died In 1999, and reality as we know has never been the same since. Was it Y2K? A shift in consciousness? A CERN experiment gone wrong? Or are we trapped in some kind of simulation, repeating cycles without ever noticing? Enjoy the show! "Don't forget. I'm also just a girl, standing in front of a boy, asking him to love her." And, boy, were we suckers for this girl. In 1999's Notting Hill, the powerhouse coupling of Julia Roberts and Hugh Grant had audiences lining up on both sides of the pond. The rom com would go on to make over $360 million. Now, decades later, does this London-set love story have us scratching our heads as much as it once tugged our hearts? Why is Emma so drawn to Will? Why is Emma so mean to Will? And, why oh why, do we care? The Old Roommates throw on some totally inappropriate t-shirts - it's laundry day - and give this crowd pleaser a revisit through their middle-aged lens.
We're not just a tech podcast; we're a tech & culture podcast. So today, we’re revisiting the charming and prescient 1999 Disney Channel Original movie Smart House. Directed by the multi-talented Levar Burton, it explores the role of smart home technology on a suburban family from a time when that technology was pure science fiction. It's not only a fun movie, but underneath its G-rated Disney veneer is a movie that has a lot to say about gender, relationships, labor, and the human experience. A major part of the movie is the kids' grappling with the loss of their mother, which hits home for Bridget at this time in her own life. Bridget recaps the film with Producer Mike to explore what it gets right, what it gets wrong, and what it’s trying to say about technology and the people who use it. Do you like film recap episodes like this? Should we do more of them? Should we never do another? Please let us know what you think, and send movie suggestions! In this episode, the randomizer goes all the way back to 1999 to pick a teen high school romantic comedy loosely based on one of the more controversial plays by history's most celebrated playwright, William Shakespeare. Now, Shakespeare is of course ubiquitously revered as the greatest writer the English language has ever known, but it's worth asking from time to time, did any of his plays contain motorcycle stunts, ska music, outdoor paintball, high school students inexplicably dressed as cowboys, Seattle's Fremont Troll sculpture, a large penis drawn on the face of the head elf from The Santa Clause, or Larry Miller rattling off hip-hop slang? Tragically, no, they did not. But, luckily for literature lovers the world over, the writers of The House Bunny and the director of the Martin Lawrence vehicle Black Knight eventually came along to correct these grievous oversights on the Bard of Avon's part. Get ready for a whirlwind of emotions as we dive deep into Paul Thomas Anderson's 1999 San Fernando Valley epic Magnolia with a full audio commentary! Join us as we explore the interconnected lives, chance encounters, and fateful events that shape this self-consciously indulgent narrative. But before we loose ourselves to frogs and familial strife, we kick off the episode with our Blue Plate Special segment, stirring up the latest updates on the ongoing Joaquin Phoenix and Todd Haynes drama- the story that *won't* go away- and dishing out our thoughts on the newly released Beetlejuice Beetlejuice. After revisiting the dark humor of Tim Burton's world, we turn our attention to Anderson's own symphony of chaos and emotion, breaking down how Magnolia blends melodrama and fate into one unforgettable cinematic experience.
