The July twenty twenty-three Please Hold For Dave Sim has all the answers to all the Mike's questions. And even some Non-Mike questions. It's a hoot! Matt remembers Jeff Seiler, but not to print out his bit. Dave answers the last of Adam J. Elkhadem (R.I.P.)'s questions about making comics. Dave answers Mike's question about marketing your work...by reading one of Mike's stories. Dave answers Mike's question about Dave's drawing hand. Dave answers Mike's question about Jack Kamen's method of stylized realism in comics art. Dave answers Mike's question about...well, it's more a comment, but we discuss it... Dave answers NOT Mike's (oh thank god, I was beginning to think I was stuck in a Kafkaesque nightmare of Mikes...) question about Rodney Schroeter's book, Mission of Benevolent Greed. Dave answers another NOT Mike question, this time about where the Cerebus warehouse books ended up, and offers a new "Swordfish" deal to all the listeners who find themselves in Kitchener, Ontario, Canada. Dave answers Tony "Michael" Dunlop's question about Cerebus Archive Portfolios. What I say? A "hoot"! Bill Gaines changed the comic industry in multiple ways, in multiple eras, it just so happens that our favorite involved schlocky gore and stolen stories. The "source material" included works from Ralph Murphy, Robert Florey, F. Marion Crawford, Arthur Machens, W.F. Harvey, H. P. Lovecraft, Edgar Allan Poe, Ray Bradburry, David H. Keller, and Carl Theodor Dreyer.  In the episode, we try to herald the artists of the comic, including Wally Wood, Johnny Craig, Graham Ingels, George Evans, Jack Kamen, and Joe Orlando. Truly, the art is what distinguished this series more than anything else.  We also touch on the cartoon series, Tales from the Cryptkeeper, the feature films (Tales from the Crypt and The Vault of Fear), and the bizarre game show, Secrets of the Cryptkeeper's Haunted House.  This week's "Hidden Track" is Makes My Blood Dance with their song Sick as Our Secrets. www.makesmyblooddance.com If you ever have feedback or recommendations on future episodes, please let us know at slasherspod@gmail.com. Alex Gravedigger Grand, Bill Field of Screams, and Jim Empty Tomb Thompson discuss 1953 and the horror genre. Was EC Comics the King of Horror? Who invented horror comics? What other comics made horror and were they any good? Why did Crime Comics naturally lead into Horror? What was the relationship between Bill Gaines and Al Feldstein, and who are the best horror comic book artists of the time? Why did Wertham write anti-comics articles for the Ladies Home Journal? What psychologically led toward such a morbid interest in horror at this time in the USA? Why are we called Tripod? Jack Davis, Howard Nostrand, Reed Crandall, Joe Orlando and more! Today's Guests: Gary Groth.Kim Thompson, editors, The Comics Journal, Fantagraphics Kim Thompson, Eric Reynolds and Gary Groth, the Fantagraphics brain trust Order 'Critters, Edition# 6,' available right now at a great price by clicking on the book cover above! (JULY 21, 2009) They are probably the best-known good cop/bad cop team in comics today. “They” are Gary Groth, the founder of The Comics Journal, and his partner in Fantagraphics—and fellow editor—Kim Thompson. Fantagraphics is a preeminent publisher of comics –related books and magazines, including the more than 30-year-old Comics Journal, as well as an extensive line of graphic novels, comics histories, underground comix—with an ‘X’ or two—and comic strip collections such as “Peanuts” and “Popeye.” Order 'Zero Hour And Other Stories illustrated' by Jack Kamen, available from Amazon.com by clicking on the book cover above! Order 'Maria M.: Book One' (Vol. 1) by Gilbert Hernandez, available from Amazon.com by clicking on the book cover above! So who is the good cop and who is the bad cop? It’s no secret actually. Groth, the founder of the company, is generally regarded as the bad cop, the guy who shoots acid from the lip and lets the cow chips fall where they may. Thompson, therefore, is generally regarded as the good cop, the guy who evens out Groth’s rough edges. That, as in any case, is the reputation of the two guys atop Fantagraphics. The truth, I suspect, is somewhere in-between.
