On this episode, we discuss a Swamp Thing story that we're surprised didn't qualify for our recently wrapped We're With the Banned miniseries on banned and challenged comics -- Rite of Spring from Saga of the Swamp Thing #34, as well as its sequel, Windfall from Saga of the Swamp Thing #43, by Alan Moore and various artists, published by DC Comics! First up, Abigail Cable finally professes her love for our sentient vegetable man. And in lieu of sexytimes, he offers her communion via a bite of one of the tubers growing on his body, sending her on a consciousness-altering trip that shows her the interconnectedness of all things. Next we meet Chester Williams, an affable hippie who finds one of Swamp Thing's discarded tubers in the bayou. Part of the yam finds its way to Sandy, a woman dying of cancer. Another part of it ends up with Chester's unpleasant acquaintance Milo, and … let's just say things don't work out very well for one of them. Like, does this mean Swampy and Abby are going out? Does the yam as a kind of cosmic litmus paper? Do kids today even know what litmus paper is? And are these two stories good enough to embark on that long, strange trip known as … The Comics Canon? In This Episode: · Curt's first experience with Rite of Spring · A little heads-up would be nice, Swampy · Kevin recounts an acid trip · We know what the ellipsis means … · The 1982 Swamp Thing movie · Have we mentioned our recent appearance on Marvel by the Month? · X-Men 97 · (We Could Be) Diving for Pearls from Swamp Thing #65 Join us in two weeks as we look ahead to the upcoming Superman movie by discussing (what else?) some stories about the super pets of the Silver Age! Show notes provided by Joe PelusoJust imagine walking to the corner drug store, swinging the door wideopen, your eyes fixated on the comic spinner rack--and like a boltfrom the blue--there it is, in all its four-color glory--the firstappearance of The Justice League of America! Well, it didn't quite happen like that for me when I firstdiscovered the JLA. I was only four when B&B #28 hit the stands inlate 1959. Little Joe (no relation to the Cartwright clan) purchasedhis first copy of a JLA mag when he was ten, but he would discoverthis gem years later at one of Phil Seuling's New York Comic Cons. Join your long-winded "corner" host Joe, and fellow comic bookhistorian James as they mine the JLA's initial bow, and all theriotous ramifications it would wrought on the Silver Age of comics. From the fertile minds of Julius Schwartz, Gardner Fox and MikeSekowsky, to a golf game played by competing publishing "moguls", tothe fascinating construction of the team, this is definitely a seminalepisode of the Mint Podcast created for the discriminating comic bookhistorian!

In this special episode, Peter and Eddie are joined with comic book royalty Larry Lieber, co-creator of iconic Marvel heroes like Iron Man, Thor, and Ant-Man, and former Marvel Spider-Man group editor Danny Fingeroth. The duo dives into Lieber's illustrious 75-year career, from his early days at Timely Comics to his long tenure illustrating The Amazing Spider-Man newspaper strip and his groundbreaking work at Marvel. They also explore Lieber's bold new venture, his debut prose novel Chirps, a departure from comics that showcases his storytelling versatility. Moderated by Fingeroth, who shares insights from his own Marvel journey and his work as a comics historian, this episode is packed with behind-the-scenes anecdotes, reflections on the Silver Age of comics, and a celebration of Lieber's enduring legacy. Tune in for an unforgettable conversation with two titans of the industry!
It's another fully regrettable episode. Wait, who writes this stuff?? It's actually a full and complete episode made entirely of Jay's Regrettable Segments, where he pulls a semi-obscure (depending on who's listening) superhero from the archives of Jon Morris's book, The League of Regrettable Superheroes, then tells the story after a brief “brought to you by” ad from Art the Announcer Guy. Said (or sad) superheroes are then rated as Regrettable, Redeemable, or Not Regrettable (super original, right?) In this segment of segments, The Silver Age closes out with Spyman, then the heroes enter the Bronze and/or Modern Age, depending on how you define it, with Adam-X the X-treme, Holo-Man, and The Outsiders (probably not the ones you're thinking about.) And like the Super Bowl, even if the heroes are regrettable, this one's worth listening to just for the ads.

We are back at HeroesCon for this episode where I met the owner of Time Tunnel Comics from nearby Hickory, NC, Jacob Edwards. Jacob had a booth at the show and had some treasury sized comics I was interested in. We chatted a while and he was gracious enough to agree to an interview after the floor at the con closed. Time Tunnel Comics has been around 24 years and has been owned by Jacob since 2018. Jacob has a unique story to tell. Not comics related, per se… but a very powerful a story, nonetheless. Then join Mike and comics pro, fellow podcaster, and pal, Andrew Malin, as they discuss two cool Superman vs. Flash races from the Silver Age, collected in the Treasury-sized comic featured in this episode. Time Tunnel Comics is found at 265 2nd Ave SE, Hickory, NC 28602. Follow the shop on Facebook and Instagram, and at their website https://www.timetunnelcomics.com/! Find Andrew on the Nerd Dome podcast and VelleityStudios.com where you can find lots of cool stuff! A big thanks to Jacob for his amazing story and great book recommendation, and thanks to Andrew for joining.
Show notes provided by Joe PelusoWhat do you get when you take a police procedural, mix it with science fiction and super-heroes, throw in social and political overtones that reflect modern society--and--call it an origin story? You get one guess--and it has nothing to do with a dead planet named Krypton. Give up? Well, the answer is Timothy Truman's three issuemasterpiece--HAWKWORLD. Join you hosts Keith and Joe for another installment of "Thinking Out of the Longbox With Keith" as the boys strap on their Nth metal wings and fly into an adventure of dynamic discovery of one of DC's seminal characters--Hawkman. The later half of the decade of the 1980's saw many DC icons reimagined for a modern age as the Crisis on Infinite Earths opened the door to new, fresh version of Superman, Wonder Woman, The Batman, The Flash, Green Arrow, and the "wingedwonder" from the Planet Thanagar! Truman's Hawkworld is a gritty, commentary on the abuse of power, and how it can tear apart an individual who has had his life mapped out for him. Katar Hol is a man fighting demons of the heart and mind, as well as those that prey on the less fortunate in the real world. The guys discuss the themes and tones such a world would impose on one man, and how he must fall from grace to eventually conquer all his demons so that he may become the beloved Silver Age version of Hawkman. And as they extol the virtues of Truman's dynamic and nuanced writing, they fairly flip their minds when they profusely praise his incredible art. This is a book the guys have been wanting to wax poetic about for a long time. We feel sure you will enjoy the discourse of this somewhat overlooked gem from comics best decade. And that classic exclamation "Look up in the sky!"--takes on a whole new meaning after reading Hawkworld!

We went back to the Silver Age of Adult Cinema and picked up a starlet that had been in over 120 films. Her name is Flame! We chatted with Flame to see what had been going on since her days in front of the camera and talked a bit about her history if she's a fan of today's work. Speaking of today's work -- she does have an OnlyFans channel as well. It's always great to be able to dive into a bit of "Porn History" and Flame was a real treat to get to know! Året er 1888 og engelske Albert Mummery vil forsøge at blive den første, der når toppen på det mere end 5200 meter høje bjerg Dykh Tau - det stejleste og næsthøjeste bjerg i Kaukasus. Tidens sidste store udfordring.

Dive deep into the shadows of Gotham as Geek History Lesson embarks on a gripping journey through Batman's Dark Age—spanning from 1985 to 2000. This era redefined the Caped Crusader, courtesy of visionary creators like Frank Miller, whose "The Dark Knight Returns" brought a gritty realism to Bruce Wayne's world. Alongside Alan Moore's "The Killing Joke," which delved into the twisted psyche of the Joker, and Grant Morrison's innovative narratives in "Arkham Asylum," these stories sculpted a darker, more complex Batman. This period ushered in a renaissance of the Dark Knight, transforming him into a symbol of vigilante justice steeped in moral ambiguity, setting the stage for Batman's evolution for years to come. Take The Dirty Dozen, populate with supervillains and obscure DC characters, and plug them into Mission: Impossible-style plots. This is the recipe that John Ostrander and Luke McDonnell used to launch Suicide Squad, a series that takes place in the same mainstream post-Crisis DC Universe inhabited by Superman, Wonder Woman, and Green Lantern, but takes a very different look at the place of superhumans in it, while also casting a suspicious eye on Cold War-era U.S. interventionism. We'll discuss how Ostrander spun this series out of little more than a name recycled from the Silver Age, his working method with McDonnell, and one of this run's most enduring legacies in the DCU: Amanda Waller. This week my, guest is Christopher T. Connelly, the author of the fascinating new book HELEN MORGAN — THE ORIGINAL TORCH SINGER AND ZIEGFELD'S LAST STAR. There are a number of individuals who were very big Broadway stars back in what I call the Silver Age of Broadway (the 1920s and 30s), But who today are mostly overlooked and left out of the conversation. Performers who were on a level with Jolson and Cantor and Fanny Bryce, but whose fame has almost entirely faded. Of course most musical theater fans will know the name Helen Morgan, and know that she originated the role of "Julie" in Show Boat. But if you are like me, you will be largely unaware, of the incredible range of her talents, the depth and breadth of her career, and the level of her stardom. And I have no doubt that you'll be as fascinated by this book and by this conversation as I was. Christopher S. Connelly is a film and theater historian. His work has appeared in Etcetera magazine and the Kino Lorber DVD release of Mamoulian's Applause. He is also an actor, Roman Catholic cantor, and chorister for the Atlanta Opera. When he is not writing or performing, he works IT for the Georgia Institute of Technology. Become A PATRON of Broadway Nation! Beginning an in-depth look at the life and times of Kyle Rayner, a new Green Lantern for a new era! It's 1994, sales on the Green Lantern comic are down, and with anniversary issue #50 on the horizon, DC is looking to revitalize the title. New writer Ron Marz is brought on board with a mission: replace Silver Age stalwart Hal Jordan with a new character (in a new costume designed by incoming regular penciler Darryl Banks). The introduction of freelance-artist-turned-superhero Kyle led to Green Lantern climbing the charts, but it also courted controversy by turning Hal into a megalomaniacal villain and through a scene that would later inspire Gail Simone to create the website “Women in Refrigerators.” Discussed in this episode: Green Lantern #48-58 and #0, plus crossover issues of R.E.B.E.L.S. ‘94 and New Titans
