A Clare café owner says long-term solutions to the challenges facing business owners should be prioritised over once-off grants. New data released by the Department of Enterprise, Trade and Employment on foot of a parliamentary question from Clare TD Cathal Crowe shows 1,278 Clare businesses have received €5.1 million through the Power Up grant. The grant, which is now closed, was introduced in Budget 2025 and offered €4,000 to retail and hospitality businesses who previously availed of the Increased Cost of Business grant. Siobhain Landy of Sweet'n'Green in Ennis, whose business benefitted from the Power Up grant, says while supports are welcome, the reduction of the hospitality VAT rate to 9% is what businesses are crying out for.

Phil Totaro: This is Power Up, where groundbreaking wind energy ideas become your clean energy future. Here's your hosts, Allen Hall and Phil Totaro. Allen Hall: We have really interesting patents this week, Phil, including this first one from Siemens Gamesa, and it is a wind turbine blade with an advanced de icing system. Now, you say to yourself, well, there's been a lot of de icing systems on wind turbine blades. In fact, Rosie has worked on a number of them for LM. But this one's a little bit different. So it It uses a kind of a matrix setup of thermal heating areas arranged in sort of series and parallel connections, and it creates overlapping heating zones that can be very precisely controlled. Now that is very beneficial because a lot of times you More temperature, more heat towards the tip than you do at the root. So you would like the temperature to be graded up towards the tip. It's kind of hard to do a lot of times. But in this situation, you can adapt it to the situation. And this seems smart, but I haven't seen it implemented. And I know Siemens Gamesa owners. Like the icing system. So maybe this is coming out in the near future, Phil. Phil Totaro: Yeah, this would be interesting because this is very different than your conventional like blown air solution, like Enercon and other companies use. Where you could have a scenario where you've got like hotspots and, and heat concentrations at different points along the blades, particularly where you have ribs or bulkheads or something that would kind of get in the way of the airflow. a thermal heating mat with again, different zones where you can kind of trigger, on off to, to try and either prevent ice accretion or actually provide deicing for the blade. So it's, it's a really interesting approach in that it gives you more granular control over where you want to be able to, to de ice and again, based on ice thickness, and you can, monitor your Phil Totaro: performance, or you might have a more sophisticated system that actually monitors how much ice is still stuck on the blade. So. The, the implementation of this I think would be welcome. And it's probably something that, I mean, heating mats are almost inevitably, they do introduce a certain amount of challenges, especially with lightning interactions. But generally speaking, they are a good way for wind turbine blades to to be de iced. So hopefully this does make its way into more commercially available products in the future. Allen Hall: Well, it looks like it will save somewhere between 20 and 50 percent of energy consumption to, to heat the blade. That would be remarkable if you could make a, even a 10 percent change in the amount of power required to heat the blade up. Going to 50 percent would be astounding. And that makes me think you're going to see this, this patent idea Phil Totaro: show up pretty soon. I mean, to be blunt, like, and I'll do respect to Enercon that pioneered a lot of this technology, but volumetric heating is just wildly inefficient, so it's like, something that's a more, cost efficient and thermally efficient solution is probably desirable. Allen Hall: Our next patent is from Vestas and this. Seems like a relatively simple idea, but it evidently isn't because they were able to patent it. So,

Here's your hosts, Allen Hall and Phil Totaro. Allen Hall: Phil, this episode of Power Up is going to focus on cooling. And as wind turbines get bigger and bigger, thermal controls are becoming more important. You need to make sure that there's no thermal runaways, and with the amount of power. 8, 10, 12, 15 megawatts going on inside of some of these nacelles. You're seeing a lot of patents and innovation around cooling, and this first one is from Siemens Gamesa, and it has to do with the generator itself. And the patent describes a cooling system for the generator that places air channels to better control temperature. Within the generator. Now, the key feature includes the magnet elements arranged in rows with groove like recesses that allow for targeted airflow between the components. Now, that design creates multiple cooling paths with gaps somewhere between like a half a millimeter and ten millimeters wide that enable better heat dissipation. So, obviously Siemens Gamesa sees the future, which is thermal control in a generator, because if you have overheating in generators That can be quite expensive to fix, so they're trying to address it up front, Phil, with this basically airflow pattern. Phil Totaro: Yeah, and, and as you mentioned, not only are generators getting bigger but particularly for offshore, the operational efficiency matters a lot. and how you control both the flux density and efficiency of the generator, balanced against how you have to cool the thing to maintain the kind of an air gap that you need in order to get the efficiency you want. It, it just throws these thermal engineers into complete chaos most of the time. So the way that they're architecting this is so that you can control the airflow in those channels in between the, the magnet holders to prevent hotspots. For the long term, if it keeps happening and you keep getting the hotspot, it can actually cause thermal degradation in the magnets and in The, the generator structure itself. So again, in order to maintain kind of peak operational efficiency, cooling becomes a a critical component to that. Allen Hall: Our second patent is from Goldwind and it is also focused on cooling up and then the cell. And it. Is an idea that is wrapped around really a sophisticated coolings control system that uses predictive temperature monitoring to optimize cooling. And as you can well imagine, as these generators get bigger, there's just a lot of nooks and crannies and you need to be able to monitor the hole in the cell area for temperature increases and to control it. Well, this system connects a cooling device and a yaw controller to a frequency converter that controls the operation based on the predictive temperature. Temperature thresholds. Now the key innovation is ability to anticipate when cooling will be needed and by calculating future temperature profiles and allowing a more proactive reaction to that temperature control. So they're, they're using a lot more information to predict where the temperatures will be and from what it...

Here's your hosts, Allen Hall and Phil Totaro. Allen Hall: Alright, Phil, some really interesting patents this week from our friends at LM. The first one is something you can relate to. You know, they say that necessity is the mother of invention, and that really the second saying about patents and ideas is probably one of the better places to come up with them is in the restroom. Well, this Definitely happened because this patent involves putting Rolls of fiberglass fabric in a dispenser mechanism, just like an industrial toilet paper dispenser. That's what this is. So instead of having to carry those heavy rolls of fiberglass and put them onto the blade and basically lumbering them around, what they have is a basically a carriage system that holds multiple rolls and you pull from the roll. And once the roll is empty, it rolls back into a basic containment device to hold the tubes that are left and a new roll. So all this is a really great device and it is pretty simple and I'm sure it saves the people on the floor a tremendous amount of time and energy. Come on, Phil, this one came out of the restroom, right? I Phil Totaro: can't speak to that, but what I can say is that the amount of manufacturing automation that we use in wind turbine blades is not what it needs to be. So this is a really good step in the right direction. In addition to being innovative and, and creative this is as you said, I mean, it's a huge time saver not to have to hand roll anything, and it, it allows for better layup when you're, you know, putting, putting different fabric layers down. So, you know, keep in mind that for the majority of the industry, and this includes all the blades that we still manufacture over in China, of course, The majority of the industry is actually still using a lot of hand layup process and not a whole lot of process automation. So for LM to have recently developed this type of concept and this type of technology, it's a great application and certainly a necessary one. I'm not quite sure if they developed it in the toilet, but You know, hopefully it's not in the waste bin either. Allen Hall: Our second idea is from, of course, LM Wind Power, since this is their week. And this patent describes a innovative turbine blade design that significantly Reduces noise, but maintaining aerodynamic performance. Now, the way this blade is designed, and it's mostly a shape, is the pressure side is broken into three distinct sections. A convex curve near the leading edge, a concave section in the middle, and a straight curve. section near the trailing edge. So it kind of goes flat. So if you've seen some more recent blades, they're kind of cupped, right? And in that cupping, you create this little skipping action of the air at the back end, and it makes this rapidly changing noise that you hear on the ground. So what LM is doing is sort of flattening out the blades at the airflow coming off. Is it nearly as loud?

Allen Hall: Alright, Phil, our first patent of the week comes from our friends at LM Wind Power, and it is for improved hybrid pultrusion plates for wind turbine blades. That's a mouthful, by the way. But what they mean is that they have these protrusion plates that are the main structural element inside of the blade and LM likes to mix carbon fiber with fiberglass is a lot cheaper. So you can actually make stronger structural spars or spar caps by mixing carbon fiber with fiberglass. All that makes sense. The issue is lightning, actually. And when lightning likes to flow down carbon fiber quite naturally if you don't do it right, if you don't mix the fiberglass and the carbon just right and lay them out in certain orientations, you can get carbon sparking the carbon, which can damage the fiberglass, which can damage the protrusion, and your blade falls over. So LM has come up with a really unique way of controlling where the fibers go in a pultrusion. Phil Totaro: Yeah, and this is really fascinating to me because they have been one of the pioneers of developing this hybrid glass and, and carbon blade over the past, you know, decade or more that they've been investigating this type of technology. And what they're specifically doing with this is, as you mentioned, it's, it's really about controlling the temperature. The fiber orientation so that you don't have the arcing issues that you mentioned. But also, you know, when you're passing the lightning current through anything, whether it's copper wire, whether it's carbon or what have you, it heats up and the way it heats up can, you know, with. With this type of an application can specifically weaken or damage or deform the blade. And that's obviously undesirable. So this is really fascinating how they've kind of taken this kind of hybrid material technology to the next level with, all right, well, we figured out how to, you know, orient fibers but we need to tune it. in a way where you can actually conduct lightning that's not going to, you know, overheat the blade and, and damage things. So this is actually really fascinating and I, I hope that they're actually using this in or have this in commercial use because this is it's quite an interesting idea and a really clever approach to You know, be able to address a, a pretty common problem. Allen Hall: Our next patent comes from GE Vernova. It, it's a way of creating a crane assembly on the the cell by using the hub as a means of transport. So the concept goes like this. I have a winch on the hub. I lower that winch cable down, and I pick up this crane assembly and I'll hoist it up to the bottom. of the hub, and I mount it to the bottom of the hub. Then I rotate the hub, so now this crane's on top of the hub. I add some more support pieces into the nacelle,
