A documentary called Cops and Cabins allowed cops to decompress and find their safe space. When Eric Reynolds saw himself in that short film, he realized how heavy and sick he looked. As a cop, he maintained an active lifestyle, playing basketball and carrying weights, but as heavy as he was, it led him to several injuries. He learned about the ketogenic diet from a friend. Being unfamiliar with it, he read several books about it before he began his keto journey, including meal planning and macros tracking. More than weight loss and physical changes, he also saw improvements in his mental health, perception, and emotional stability. In this episode, the retired police officer discusses his struggles with PTSD and how the carnivore and ketogenic diets have improved his general health.Quick Guide:01:05 Introduction04:05 Developing trauma12:39 Police work and family life18:10 Change in his psyche21:57 Health improvements for cops to enjoy their retirement25:10 The workout and diet routine27:59 How keto helped in one's change in perception33:35 The Cops and Campers41:15 Improve other areas of your life to cope with the stress of your job46:51 Mental clarity and emotional stability47:50 How Keto Five-O is helping people52:18 His family's carnivore diet1:00:53 Closing and contactsGet to know our guest:Eric Reynolds is a retired police officer who advocates ketogenic carnivore lifestyle. Join us in this episode for a conversation with Eric Reynolds, Vice-President of Seattle-based publisher Fantagraphics. Headquartered in Seattle's Maple Leaf community—with their Bookstore & Gallery in the industrial Georgetown neighborhood—Fantagraphics has quietly produced a stunning body of work over the last 40+ years. Their genres span alternative comics, classic comic strip anthologies, manga, magazines and graphic novels. The imprint's stable of contemporary comics creators includes Jessica Abel, Peter Bagge, Ivan Brunetti, Charles Burns, Daniel Clowes, Mary Fleener, Roberta Gregory, Mega Kelso, Manny Murphy, Joe Sacco, and Chris Ware. They also include the enigmatic artistry of Jim Woodring as well as the magical realism of the Hernandez Brothers. Eric's passion for comics brought him to Seattle in the early 1990's at age 20 to intern at Fantagraphics, whose owners soon promoted him to publicist. In this podcast, Eric explores synergies between the fledgling alternative comics movement and Sub Pop Records, as well as independent media (including The Rocket & The Stranger) during this watershed period. These and other stories reveal Eric's purposeful stewardship of a vulnerable yet resolute enterprise through untold business obstacles, elevating comics into a mature art form along the way. For Eric, Fantagraphics remains a labor of love. “Sometimes it's a matter of be careful what you ask for; But it really is incredible to see comics taken seriously as art in a way that we could only dream about, years ago.” ~ Eric Reynolds
Today, I am blessed to have here with me Eric Reynolds. He uses a meat-based carnivore diet with minimal herbs and spices to recover from PTSD and drop the last of his extra body weight. Eric was a cop with the Boynton Beach Police Department near West Palm when he got shot in the foot by an armed bank robber they were chasing, and he ended up killing the suspect in the process. The whole incident left him in a pretty bad way, and he started to display many signs of PTSD. He discovered the keto diet, and not only did his health improve drastically and all the excess weight melt away, but he found peace and tranquillity began to return to his life, and his symptoms of PTSD start to fade. He has since retired from the force and is now committed to helping other police officers get their health back and help them deal with similar problems to his. He has established an organization called Keto-Five-0. In this episode, Eric opens up about the shooting that changed his life while working at the Boynton Beach Police Department. As a cop, Eric was overweight, unhealthy, and experiencing signs of PTSD. After learning about a ketogenic lifestyle, Eric lost weight, increased his energy levels, and improved brain function. Tune in as Eric speaks about the inpsprition behind his Keto Five-O resources and how he helps improve the lives of active and retired police officers. [07:05] What Happened When Eric Was Working As A Boynton Beach Police Department While working as a cop, Eric got a call to be on the lookout for a certain car. When Eric found the car, he got into a car chase. After the car got into a crash, the suspect started shooting; Eric was shot, and the suspect was killed. Down the road, Eric started to show signs of PTSD. As a cop, Eric was unhealthy and overweight. Most of the time, cops are eating fast food. [17:55] How Eric Learned About Keto and What Happened When He Tried The Carnivore Diet After the shooting, Eric had a rough time getting back into the swing of things. Eventually, Eric cut out beer and sweets to try and lose weight. He lost ten pounds. Eric met someone who lost fifty pounds by doing keto. The first resource Eric went to was Ketogenic.com: https://ketogenic.com/ Keto resources helped Eric with meal prep; he was down another eight pounds in two weeks. By following a carnivore diet, Eric got his weight down to 176 and could actually see his abs. [23:30] How Eric Became The Keto Five-O Guy and His Passion For Nutrition At work, Eric would get a lot of questions about how he lost so much weight. So, Eric would refer people to The Magic Pill: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6duhSjYyj0k Then, some of Eric's peers started to lose weight themselves. Eventually, Eric started a Facebook Group. You can find it here: https://www.facebook.com/groups/ketofiveo/. Doctors were pushing statins on Eric, which is one of the reasons why he started to study and do research. He loves helping people get off medicines and find the best nutrition plan possible. [26:50] How Eric's Health Improved When He Started To Lose Weight With Keto You have to feed the brain. When Eric started to lose weight, his energy levels improved, and his brain fog disappeared. For the first time in a long time, Eric wasn't as sore or inflamed. Most cops die before they get to enjoy their pension. Unfortunately, many cops die of heart attacks or develop diabetes. Overall, when you lose weight, you feel good, you're happier, and you may live longer. [38:00] Cops and Campers: Improving The Lives of Active and Retired Police Officers After doing 23andMe, Eric found out he had a brother that was also a cop living in Florida. He was a cop two hours away in Orlando. Eric's brother was a year and a half older. During the pandemic, Eric and his family traveled in a camper. Eric filmed a short documentary called Cops & Cabins: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mZmGaMZzvck. [47:40] Remember That Keto Is Not A Diet, It's A Lifestyle Stick with keto. Keto is not a diet; it's a way of life. By following keto, Eric probably put another ten years onto his life. Overall, keto works! AND MUCH MORE! Thank you for tuning in for another episode of Life's Best Medicine. In this episode, Dr. Brian is back with Eric Reynolds. Eric Reynolds (Keto Five-O) is a Licensed Primary Sports Nutritionist, Personal Trainer, and retired police officer. He found success with a Ketogenic/ Carnivore lifestyle and founded Keto Five-O to help others find the same success and wellness that he found. In this discussion, Brian and Eric talk about the inception of the Cops & Campers group, Eric's experience dealing with anti-cop bias, the mental health epidemic in the country, the joys of camping and being out in nature, the benefits of homeschooling, the importance of being a critical thinker and fostering critical thinking skills in your children, Eric's experience finding and meeting his half-brother, the power of eating clean, and the damaging effects of negativity and stereotyping. Life's Best Medicine According to Eric: “Think about how busy your life is—are you living or are you slowly dying? I realized that the old career I had, which was honorable—and I love all my police officers and first responders—but there comes a point when you've gotta really look at yourself. You've been helping everyone else, but you've gotta look at yourself—your own psyche, your physical health and mental health. Don't be scared to retire early. Money is just money. It's not true happiness.” Thank you for listening. Have a blessed day and stay healthy! Eric Reynolds was a police officer on a smaller Florida city force who was shot in the line of duty. The initial shock of the experience led him to assume life would go on as normal but upon return to the force he began to experience the symptoms of PTSD that heightened his fight flight response and ultimately led to his reaching out for help. Unfortunately the average care provided by the most readily available help isn't helping our finest. MediaVillage's Insider InSites podcast on Media, Marketing and Advertising
How does a CMO for a company with some twenty top brands create an emotional connection with consumers and still succeed with performance marketing? In this episode of Insider InSites, Eric Reynolds, Chief Marketing Officer of The Clorox Company met up with E.B. Moss, Head of Content Strategy for MediaVillage at the ANA Masters of Marketing to tell all – from how they tap the world of influencers, to their strategy for voice... and even how to compete with challenger brands like Jessica Alba’s Honest Company. The following topline has been edited for length and clarity; listen to the full conversation on staying ahead of the marketing curve at a hundred-year-old company. E.B. Moss: Eric, you have global responsibility for all marketing functions -- brand strategy to personnel, media buying to advanced analytics -- at The Clorox Company. That ranges from Clorox Bleach and Lysol to Burt’s Bees and Hidden Valley Ranch Dressing. How do you create an emotional connection with such diverse customers? Eric Reynolds: ...You've got to make an idea that connects with the head and the heart, that's relevant for the category and the brand, but also to that person. That takes a lot of hard work, insight and getting that tonality right. People, particular younger consumers, want to feel like they understand the values and the ideas and the beliefs of the brands they buy. So, we work really hard to bring that to life through all kinds of storytelling. Moss: What’s your approach to influencer marketing? Reynolds: ... Influencer is a bigger and bigger piece of our marketing mix because having other trusted people tell our brand's story is essential to getting the word out and are essential to our overall strategies for keeping our brands fresh and relevant. Because guess what? People want to hear about our brands from people that they feel like they know and trust, and they put a lot of weight on those messages. ...Whether it's a big celebrity influencer or micro-influencers, really depends on the brand, the question, the strategy. [As a celebrity example] Steph Curry, Golden State Warriors, came to us because he was so committed to people using less plastic in drinking water. He could have signed a big sugary beverage contract with almost any major manufacturer, but he said, "no, I believe in Brita," and he's been an outstanding spokesperson and he particularly talks to that younger Brita user we're trying to bring in the franchise to lure them into filtered water. And could anything be more everyday than Liquid-Plumr? We found influencer work through creators making videos about gross stuff getting clogged is an exceptional way to get people to engage in the category. The organic views have been incredible, and it's been so strong we’re taking influencer-generated content and putting it on TV. In the old days it would have been [the other way around.] Our main channels still continue to deliver beautifully but a lot of our spend and focus is digital video, which [has become] terribly important to tell our story across most of our brands, and the ability to reach people in search at moment of intent has grown, but the new channel is Amazon, Target, Walmart, where it’s not just a place to buy, but a place to tell our story. We're also watching the voice trend and participating in its development very closely. Consumers go to things that are easier and faster and better and voice is a way to do that. Moss: I ask for Clorox, I don't ask Amazon or Alexa for bleach. Reynolds: Yes. Or if you say, "bleach," because the algorithm knows we overwhelmingly win purchases of branded bleach on Amazon, Amazon will make us that the first choice. ... Reynolds goes on to explain how their approach to brands has to be holistic – from package design that reads well on Instagram or ships via Amazon more sustainably – and considers the total consumer experience versus just “the goo in the jar.” New tools range from AR to chatbots, to predicting areas of flu outbreaks via aggregated healthcare data in order to encourage retailers to stock up on Clorox. Hear how he described balancing classic brand marketing and performance marketing the stepped up responsibilities for their in-house agency of 20 years and how there’s little new in social platforms, but better ways to use them. Finally, on trust and inclusion, Reynolds notes: I think it's a great privilege to be a brand builder. People take hard-earned money out of their wallets and they choose our products to do something useful for them, and there's an expectation that our products work. There's also an expectation that we use the data that comes from that responsibly. ...We believe a brand should stand for values that matters to others too...that a brand is an idea and it has to fight for something beyond just being a product. And advancing values where people feel they are seen and heard is our job. ... Now, as a company, with lots of resources and employees, we're absolutely accountable to civil society. If we are an inclusive, fully representative company, we can serve people who are in fact no different than the people who work in our company. If we don't look, feel, and act like, in this case, the American population, then why would consumers put their faith in us in the long run? It all fits together. Social responsibility. Values. Inclusion and diversity. These are all essential to the long-term health of our company and our brands.

Time Codes: 00:00:33 - Introduction 00:02:57 - Listener mail! 00:10:23 - James Joyce: Portrait of a Dubliner - A Graphic Biography 00:41:38 - NOW#3 01:13:43 - A discussion of the 2018 Eisner Award nominations 02:00:49 - Wrap up 02:01:55 - Contact us This week Paul and Derek review two recent releases, and they also take the time to discuss this year's Eisner Award nominations. They start off with Alfonso Zapico's James Joyce: Portrait of a Dubliner - A Graphic Biography (Arcade Publishing). Originally published in Spanish, this is a look at the life of the famous Irish modernist, covering not only his accomplishments as a writer, but his family and personal relations, as well. As the guys discuss, Zapico's text provides a general outline of the major events and relationships in Joyce's life, but as with most comics-based biographies, the interiority of the subject is limited. At the same time, this is a well-paced and even detailed look at the author of Dubliners and Ulysses, with Zapico presenting a very human portrait of a writer most may only know from a critical distance. After that, the Two Guys check out the latest issue of NOW, the Fantagraphics anthology edited by Eric Reynolds. This has become an ongoing obligation of The Comics Alternative, covering each issue of this anthology as it's released. (Paul and Derek discussed NOW#1 last fall, and then Gene and Derek looked at NOW#2 back in January.) The latest collection brings together several artists contributing to previous issues -- e.g., Noah Van Sciver, Eleanor Davis, and Dash Shaw -- but also a variety of creators who are not only new to the anthology, but brand new to both Paul and Derek, as well. In fact, this is one of the things they enjoy about NOW, its diversity and the editor's dedication to exposing the work of little-known comics artists. Some of the most notable pieces in this third issue are from contributors outside of North America, including Marcello Quintanhila (Brazil), Anne Simon (France), and Roberta Scomparsa (Italy). The guys wrap up this week's show with a discussion of the 2018 Eisner Award nominations. Paul and Derek do not make any predictions, nor do they second-guess the award judges or speculate as to internal dynamics about which they had no way of knowing. What they dodiscuss are the various creators and publishers under nomination, any trends or tendencies they can possibly discern from this year's selections, the process of categorization and definition within the industry, and the sheer number of current nominees, artists and texts, that were actually discussed on The Comics Alternative.
Eric Reynolds has spent his entire adult life at Fantagraphics, starting as an intern and returning to work as an ace reporter, news editor, Hate inker, marketing muckamuck, and even, occasionally, cartoonist. These days his jack-of-all-tradesness has seen him clamber … Continue reading →
Time Codes: 00:00:32 - Introduction 00:03:00 - Catching up with flu-ridden Gene 00:04:21 - Now #2 00:44:07 - The Strumpet #5 01:11:49 - Barbarella #1 & #2 01:26:56 - Wrap up 01:27:55 - Contact us This week Gene and Derek discuss three recent titles, two of which are anthologies and one a blast from the past. They begin with the second issue of Fantagraphics' Now, edited by Eric Reynolds. As the guys mention, this one is comprised of various comics that run the gamut of art and narrative styles. While some of the contributions are more "traditional" in their storytelling presentation -- such as the pieces by Susan Jonaitis and Graham Chaffee, Ariel López V., Dash Shaw, and Joseph Remnant -- others challenge our understanding of the medium. Short works by Fabio Zimbres, Conxita Herrero, and James Turek are just some of the stories in this issue that experiment with how comics mediate narrative. Next, the guys turn to another anthology, The Strumpet #5. Edited by Ellen Lindner and Glynnis Fawkes, this collection was successfully Kickstarted last year, and the theme of this volume is origins. As Gene and Derek point out, this understanding of "origins" is rather broad, with some of the contributions focusing on origins of identity, origins of awareness, origins of memories, origins of myths, origins of tyrants (Donald Trump, anyone?), origins of sexuality, and origins via birth. This is a transatlantic anthology, with creators from both North America and the UK providing a diversity of story and style. Gene had been familiar with some previous issues of The Strumpet, but this was Derek's first exposure to the anthology. And he is sorry he hadn't discovered it earlier. The Two Guys with PhDs wrap up by looking at a new series from Dynamite Entertainment that brings back a classic, and controversial, figure from the 1960s. Barbarella is Mike Carey and Kenan Yarar's contemporary take on Jean-Claude Forest's legendary protagonist. The cheesecakey emphasis and the eroticism is definitely a part of this title, but Carey gives the space-traveling Barbarella more agency, making her more heroic, and less of a passive vessel, than Forest's original incarnation. The guys discuss the first two issues of the series, the second of which was just recently released, and both Derek and Gene are hooked.
Time Codes: 00:00:30 - Introduction 00:03:12 - The tragedy of the California wildfires 00:05:58 - Lighter Than My Shadow 00:48:27 - Now #1 01:14:03 - The Family Trade #1 01:31:28 - Wrap up 01:32:31 - Contact us This week Paul and Derek take on three exciting new titles. They begin with a moving memoir from UK creator Katie Green, Lighter Than My Shadow (Roar-Lion Forge). In this work, Green reveals the eating disorders she struggled with as a young girl and into adulthood. Growing up obsessive-compulsive, Green chronicles how this condition contributed to her anorexic behavior, later evolving into problems with binging. Green also narrates her many attempts to address these problems with various doctors and therapists, the most notorious of whom ends up sexually abusing her...providing even more obstacles to her recovery. The guys are impressed by Green's honesty and storytelling abilities -- particularly taken by her art and the visual metaphors she employs throughout -- although toward the end of their conversation about this title, they wonder if perhaps the memoir could have been streamlined just a little. This is a 500+ page text, after all. Next, the Two Guys look at a brand new anthology from Fantagraphics, Now #1. Edited by Eric Reynolds, this collection of diverse and experimental comic art brings to mind Fantagraphics previous anthology, Mome (which both Derek and Paul dearly miss). In fact, the guys begin their discussion of Now by referencing the earlier anthology, with Paul feeling that the latest efforts are more experimental than Mome, while Derek see it as more similar to the previous series. The only difference is number of new and/or unfamiliar creators in Now (and, Derek argues, such was also the case several years ago with Mome). Some of the standouts in this first issue of Now are Dash Shaw's "Scorpio," Gabrielle Bell's "Dear Naked Guy...," Sammy Harkham's "I, Marlon," Malachi Ward and Matt Sheean's "Widening Horizon," and especially Noah Van Sciver's "Wall of Shame" (for Derek, the best of the collection). But the guys are also impressed, and at times curiously confused, by the contributions from creators that are new to them, such as Sara Corbett, J.C. Menu, Antoine Cossé, and Kaela Graham. But as Paul and Derek argue, the entire issue of Now is compelling and works successfully as an anthology. They can't wait until the second issue, due for release in January. Finally, the Two Guys wrap up with a discussion of Justin Jordan, Nikki Ryan, and Morgan Beem's The Family Trade #1 (Image Comics). This is another example of the kind of world-building often found at Image, and it's the story of a neutral territory in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, the Float, ruled by the descendants of the ship captains that originally founded the realm -- called the Clans -- and the Family, descendants of the hands who had worked for the captains. This first issue opens with the protagonist, Jessa Wynn, attempting to assassinate Stagger Berghardt, a Trump-like charismatic demagogue who appeals to the base instincts of the citizens of the Float. She bungles the assassination, but her efforts put into motion a series of encounters that will propel the narrative into the next issues. Both Derek and Paul are impressed by this first issue, especially Beem's art, and both plan on remaining on board for the rest of the series.

Renegade Thinkers Unite: #2 Podcast for CMOs & B2B Marketers
Packaged goods companies are well known for their marketing discipline and not the place you’d expect to hear a CMO express the need for “tolerating a lot more chaos and ambiguity in the culture and the way we work in order to get to the good stuff.” But that’s just the starting point with Eric Reynolds, CMO of The Clorox Company, who among other things advises against using influencers on a broad scale and believes that unless your brand gets talked about via the “holy trinity of the brand story, the message, and the content” then the idea isn’t big enough to cut through. Eric Reynolds was named CMO in January 2015 and according to Clorox, “As CMO, he has global responsibility for all marketing functions, including brand strategy and management, personnel staffing and development, consumer insights, advanced analytics, agency management, consumer promotion, digital capabilities, media planning and buying, commercial production, and graphic design.” In short, he’s the real deal. Reynolds overseas marketing for a wide range of brands including Brita, Burt’s Bees, Formula 409, Glad, Hidden Valley, Kitchen Bouquet, KC Masterpiece, Soy Vay, Kingsford, Liquid-Plumr, Mistolin, Pine-Sol, Tilex, S.O.S., and Fresh Step, Scoop Away and Ever Clean cat litters.

Here is the news.A scientist known as China&`&s "father of hybrid rice" has developed a new strain that could enable the plant to adapt to more varied growing environments at a significantly lower cost. The strain is designed to be hardier and able to withstand lower temperatures during the plant&`&s reproductive phase. It is the third generation of hybrid rice that Yuan Longping has developed.Yuan told the China Daily that the third generation will also incorporate the merits of the previous two generations, and its adaptability to low temperatures will increase significantly. Low temperatures during the reproductive phase resulted in crop failure for the second generation of hybrid rice in Anhui province in 2014, triggering government scrutiny over the adaptability of the strain. It also infuriated farmers, whose yields plummeted from an expected 7.5 metric tons to 750 kilograms per hectare, or even to zero. Yuan said the cost of breeding the new strain has also decreased significantly, making its commercial use viable in the short term. Yuan is also developing a new strain of saltwater-resistant rice that could yield up to 4.5 tons per hectare - around 60 percent of the yield from regular paddies. Meanwhile, his team is looking to sell the new strain to the world&`&s major rice-growing countries. It is a chronic condition that destroys gum tissue and bone supporting teeth, leading to tooth loss. The vaccine targets enzymes produced by the bacteria to trigger an immune response which in turn produces antibodies that neutralize the pathogen&`&s destructive toxins.Eric Reynolds, CEO of the Oral Health Cooperative Research Center at the University of Melbourne, said the vaccine would greatly reduce the tissue destruction caused by the pathogen.Reynolds said the methods are helpful, and he holds high hopes for this vaccine to improve the quality of life for millions of people.Clinical trials of the vaccine in humans are expected to begin in early 2018. The professor said the role of cannabis medicines in alleviating chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting is still unclear, and this study aims to provide a definitive answer to this question. (JULY 21, 2009) They are probably the best-known good cop/bad cop team in comics today. “They” are Gary Groth, the founder of The Comics Journal, and his partner in Fantagraphics—and fellow editor—Kim Thompson. Fantagraphics is a preeminent publisher of comics –related books and magazines, including the more than 30-year-old Comics Journal, as well as an extensive line of graphic novels, comics histories, underground comix—with an ‘X’ or two—and comic strip collections such as “Peanuts” and “Popeye.” Order 'Zero Hour And Other Stories illustrated' by Jack Kamen, available from Amazon.com by clicking on the book cover above! Order 'Maria M.: Book One' (Vol. 1) by Gilbert Hernandez, available from Amazon.com by clicking on the book cover above! So who is the good cop and who is the bad cop? It’s no secret actually. Groth, the founder of the company, is generally regarded as the bad cop, the guy who shoots acid from the lip and lets the cow chips fall where they may. Thompson, therefore, is generally regarded as the good cop, the guy who evens out Groth’s rough edges. That, as in any case, is the reputation of the two guys atop Fantagraphics. The truth, I suspect, is somewhere in-between.
