This week on the No Regrets Podcast, Steve Sonderman is joined by John Groth, Area Director for the Mid-Atlantic with Priority One. In Part One of this powerful conversation, John shares his remarkable journey from growing up as an atheist to finding Christ—and the moment his father challenged him to live out what he claimed to believe. That turning point led John into ministry, serving as a chaplain in the Air Force Reserves, teaching as an adjunct professor, and now leading men through his work with Priority One. John opens up about leading while struggling, the toll of ministering to others without taking care of yourself, and the impact of PTSD. He reflects on hard-won lessons from his time in the classroom and emphasizes why honesty, humility, and authenticity matter—especially to the next generation. As we kick off a month focused on discipleship, John's story is a timely reminder: God doesn't need us to have it all together to use us in powerful ways. With over 40 years of climbing under his belt, he joins me full of tales about the evolution of Devil's Lake and his legendary climbing exploits across the US and the globe.  You'll hear about Dave's experiences at Yosemite, Eldorado Canyon & Waco (where legend Ron Kauk crashed at his apartment!); climbing in the early days of the Red River Gorge with Porter Jarrard; his European adventures - from Chamonix alpine climbing to crags in communist-era Czechoslovakia to sharing pints with the who's who of 1980s British climbing; and his transition from dedicated trad climber to developing some of the first sport routes in the midwest. Plus, get Dave's recommendation for a great international climbing trip! Join us over on the First Ascent Patreon. In this episode, Spencer Ellison and Dr. Jennifer Muehlenkamp read a hypothetical case vignette of a client who engages in nonsuicidal self-injury (NSSI), has experienced suicidal thoughts or behaviors, or is experiencing significant depression. They then tell us how willing therapists are to treat each case (self-injury vs. suicide vs. depression), if therapists would accept them into their clinical practice, and if it depends on the therapists' (1) liability concerns, (2) comfort/skill confidence to treat self-harm, (3) attitude toward self-harm in general, and (4) attitude towards clients who self-harm.Learn more about Dr. Muehlenkamp at her University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire faculty page here, and see her growing list of peer-reviewed publications on Google Scholar here.

Listeners will gain profound insights as Justin shares how developing an unwavering mindset through discipline and action helped him reach his potential despite facing limitations. Summary Justin Groth discusses his transformation from struggling with body image issues to becoming a natural bodybuilding champion through developing an unwavering mindset and belief in himself, sharing how he overcame limitations to help others improve their lives using fitness, nutrition, and cultivating mental strength. Listeners will gain valuable insights on embracing personal growth through discipline, accountability, cutting toxic relationships, and living up to one's full potential regardless of the demons tempting you to quit. Key Takeaways Develop an unwavering belief system in yourself and your potential through consistent action, and solidify it to overcome negative thoughts and doubts holding you back. Take personal accountability for your growth and goals by setting your own high standards alone through discipline, rather than relying on others for motivation. A former marketing and technology entrepreneur, Joe founded his first company, Blue Dingo Digital, in the 1990s to help companies use the Internet to establish, brand, and grow their products. But after 20 years, Joe was ready for a change. A longtime homebrewer, Joe saw the true magic of spirits after a transformative experience tasting whiskey straight from the barrel for the very first time. In 2013, he launched Barrel Craft Spirits in Louisville, Kentucky, the epicenter of the American spirits industry. Instead of building his own distillery, Joe questioned the conventional wisdom and took a different course. He sourced and blended exceptional casks from established producers, bottled whiskeys at cask strength, and sold them as transparently as possible. That approach was unique in the United States, but not the world. Scotland's long-established independent bottlers were a major inspiration, and Joe was captivated by their ability to elevate barrels of whisky into something greater than the sum of their parts. He sensed that American consumers, too, would embrace the chance to explore whiskey in an entirely new way. Joe sold early releases case by case, personally pounding the pavement to drum up interest from bartenders and retailers. It turned out his visionary instincts were spot on once again. Barrell Craft Spirits' cask-strength small-batch and single-barrel releases quickly became an influencing force in American whiskey, picking up awards from the world's most prestigious spirits competitions. Joe remains intimately involved with every step of the production process at Barrell Craft Spirits, using his exceptional palate alongside master blender Tripp Stimson to choose and create great spirits. Creative finishes, a liberated approach to blending, and a deep-seated commitment to releasing each whiskey at cask strength and without chill filtration - just like that fateful barrel tasting years ago-continues to guide every product release.   Tripp Stimson, Director of Distillery Operations & Chief Whiskey Scientist: Tripp hails from Chattanooga, Tennessee. In 2004, following his graduation from Tennessee Technological University with a degree in biochemistry and molecular biology, he was recruited as a Research and Development Scientist for the Brown Forman Corporation, headquarters to Jack Daniel's, Woodford Reserve and Old Forrester. There he gained his experience in yeasting, fermentation, and the distillery sciences and operations that make a distillery operate successfully and efficiently. Following his 9 years with Brown Forman, Tripp formed his own consulting company providing the technical expertise needed to design, build and efficiently run a new distillery. He's been a key component in the success of distilleries around the country. Most recently, he helped to design and build the Kentucky Artisan Distillery, where he was later employed as Master Distiller and the Director of Distillery Operations. He oversaw all the Jefferson's Reserve project design and implementation including Jefferson's Groth, and Jefferson's Barrel Aged Manhattan. Additionally, he built the first malting operation in Kentucky in 2016. Tripp met Joe Beatrice at Kentucky Artisan Distillery and they began their work there together blending and producing interesting and unique whiskeys. He joined Barrell Craft Spirits in January of 2017 as the Master Distiller and Director of Distillery Operations and is responsible for developing our product formulation and leading the distillery building initiative.
