Pastor Taylor Shippy - 1 Samuel 16:1-13This morning, we explore the likely familiar story of David's anointing in 1 Samuel 16—and how even the prophet Samuel nearly chose the wrong king. God challenges Samuel to see as He does—looking for qualities beyond the physical. But what if God's challenge to Samuel is also our challenge? That God may be challenging us to see others the way He does—not by outward appearance alone, but with the eyes of grace, compassion, and discernment. This morning we're invited to adopt God's vision: to look beyond the surface, notice the overlooked, and love others with the eyes of Jesus.
We analyze the "One Big Beautiful Bill" from all the angles: from the process and potential precedent, to the actual impact the bill will have on people's lives, to the messaging of the bill from both parties. We also try to look at the long term effects of the bill: how did it change how our government will work for the people going forward and what does it mean politically for the midterms and beyond?

Since last week we've been to Pride night, and Pottymouth has checked out the Smokies new ballpark, and crosstrained with Bananaball. Patti opted out on Bananaball because there are two kinds of people in the world. Although Cosmic Baseball could be a thing… The All Star Game is loaded with former boyfriends and just a few new ones, and the Derby could be all our guys. Congrats to Justin Verlander on what must be a very beautiful new baby, and thanks for the timing which let Brett Wisely back up to the bigs. More fans behaving badly, this time to Ketel Marte, and good work to the hometown fans for much-needed support. Police Blotter and more crosstraining as we report on horrible men in two sports. Franco gets away with abhorrent deeds and Tucker denies it all. More World Baseball Classic participants are announced and we are eyeing a trip to Puerto Rico. And thank you, Trea Turner, for not ticking off the baseball gods.We say, “I went and did the Banana thing,” “A light beer but way more of it so the math should work,” and “Whiskey with the Canadians in the basement.” Fight the man, send your game balls to Meredith, get boosted, and find us on Bluesky @ncibpodcast, on Facebook @nocryinginbball, Instagram @nocryinginbball and on the Interweb at nocryinginbball.com. This week, we're taking a look at the Twilight Zone episode “Eye of the Beholder.” Janet Tyler lives in a world behind a set of bandages, ones that cover not merely her face, but her thoughts. This is her final visit, the last chance for doctors to fix her deformed face. If they are successful, she will be able to take her place with the rest of normal society; however, if her visage is unchanged, she will need to be removed–one way or another. You see, in this Twilight Zone reality, people need to look a certain way and conform to that way, else they are not allowed to co-exist with the rest of society. Oh, the State does allow for undesirables to live; they just can't live with everyone else. They must be removed. By the end of the episode, it is clear that Rod Serling has something to say about how we so easily accept the State coming in to take control, and I have a bit to say about this as well. In this KOI episode, we'll talk about why Serling uses “The State” as concept; we'll dive into whether or not there is any hope for us to cling to at the end; and I'll reveal my moment of awe, a bit of a plea for the importance of discomfort. So, grab your keys, and let's open up this door to the fifth dimension. As always, spoiler alert. If you have note seen the episode, go check it out and then come back here for the analysis. We're walking through Rod Serling's class Twilight Zone series and asking difficult questions about life. So, if you love The Twilight Zone, science fiction, or even just philosophizing about life, consider joining us on this journey. There's always room for more. God unites his people beneath a common salvation - The serpent strikes a separated people (1 Sam. 11:1-3) - God delivers His people by His Spirit-led king (1 Sam. 11:4-11) - God's Anointed unifies his people (1 Sam. 11:12-15)
It can be tempting to call out flaws in others before dealing with them in ourselves. How do we humbly accept correction and gently encourage others toward righteousness?
US President Trump's mega-donor Musk was strongly critical of the “big, beautiful bill” currently before Congress. The bill contains many things markets are worried about. Musk's opposition may embolden some Republican senators to oppose parts of the bill (Musk has more money than Trump, but their recent political forays have not been universally successful).

In Numbers 13, the Israelites stood at the edge of the Promised Land, but chose to follow a report of fear rather than trust and courage. Fear, retreating to comfort, and unbelief thus became normalized. As we explore our final Twilight Zone episode, we'll explore what has become normalized in our society and how to pursue a life of beauty instead of any ugliness that has become normalized.

In this sermon, Pastor Andy Williamson celebrates the joy of Fall Festival while reflecting on the concept of "costumes" as a metaphor for the ways we hide our true selves to escape reality. He emphasizes that God desires authenticity over pretense, encouraging us to embrace our true identities in Christ and to share the transformative love and forgiveness we receive from Him.Ultimately, Pastor Andy reminds us that, despite our imperfections, we are all valued and called to live out our faith in community.

They say beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and history proves it: blackened teeth, modified skull shapes, extended necks, lip plates, and piercings of various body parts. This week, I talk with Emma Bamford about her thriller Eye of the Beholder, a feminist retelling of Hitchcock's Vertigo. We dive into what inspired her to write a Vertigo-inspired thriller, and how well the story of controlling image still fits modern times.Eye of the Beholder SynopsisWhen Maddy Wight is hired to ghostwrite the memoir of world-renowned cosmetic surgeon Dr. Angela Reynolds, she thinks it might just be her chance to get her career back on track. She travels to Angela's remote estate in the Scottish Highlands to hunker down and learn everything she can. But the deeper she digs, the more elusive the doctor becomes. Is there more hidden beneath the surface of the kaleidoscopic beauty industry than Angela wants to reveal?Sharing the estate is Angela's enigmatic business partner, Scott, whose mercurial moods change as quickly as the conditions on the darkening moors outside. Confined to the glass-walled house, Maddy can't shake the feeling of being watched. As objects go missing, handprints appear on the windows, and a stranger lurks in the grounds, she finds herself drawn ever closer to Scott. Returning to London once the book is finished, Maddy is excited for their future together. But her dreams are shattered at the book launch when Angela learns that Scott has leapt to his death from the Scottish cliffs.Which is why, months later and lost in a fog of grief, Maddy is completely blindsided when she sees Scott entering the Tube station just in front of her. It can't be him, can it? After all, Scott is dead...or is he?In exploring the differences between looking and seeing, surface and depth, and the power of the female gaze, this tribute to Hitchcock's 1958 film masterpiece asks: If beauty is in the eye of the beholder, how much can you trust what you see?Follow Emma on InstagramFollow Kate on Instagram

The world operates on a profit model that often thrives on human misery. From the moment we enter this world, we're bombarded with messages insinuating that our self-worth is intricately tied to material possessions, consumer goods, pharmaceuticals, therapy, and a shitstorm of other products and services promising to alleviate our discontent. As author and activist Audre Lorde once said, "Caring for myself is not self-indulgence, it is self-preservation, and that is an act of political warfare." Recognizing that true liberation begins with reclaiming ownership of our self-worth and embracing our inherent value as human beings.RESOURCE: https://www.strikemagazines.com/blog-2-1/liking-yourself-is-a-rebellious-actGET AN OCCASIONAL PERSONAL EMAIL FROM ME: www.makeyourdamnbedpodcast.comTUNE IN ON INSTAGRAM FOR COOL CONTENT: www.instagram.com/mydbpodcastOR BE A REAL GEM + TUNE IN ON PATREON: www.patreon.com/MYDBpodcastOR WATCH ON YOUTUBE: www.youtube.com/juliemerica The opinions expressed by Julie Merica and Make Your Damn Bed Podcast are intended for entertainment purposes only.
