Welcome back to Artisan Church for Week 5 of "The Book of James Series." This week, Lead Pastor Sam Grosso brings us a powerful message from James 3:1-12, focusing on the transformative power of our words.
Explore the shift from personal challenges to interpersonal dynamics in "The Book of James Series" as we delve into James Chapter 2 with Pastor Sam Grosso. This sermon highlights the transition from overcoming individual trials to fostering healthy relationships, emphasizing the biblical instruction against judgment and favoritism. James challenges believers to embody mercy over judgment and impartiality over bias, reflecting Jesus's teachings that true faith is expressed not just through belief but through our deeds—particularly in how we treat others.
Join us for the second week of our "Book of James Series. This week, Pastor Sam dives deep into the profound lessons from James on the power of our words and our responses. He explores the vital Christian principles of being "slow to speak, slow to anger, and quick to listen." Pastor Sam emphasizes the importance of not only hearing the word but actively living it out as true followers of Christ. He expounds on what James defines as 'true religion'—the call to care for the widows and orphans, challenging us to reflect on how we can better serve those in need around us.
Just as Yeshua is about to ascend, He tells the disciples that whosoever they forgive will be forgiven; and who they do not forgive will not be forgiven. This overlooked moment is one of the most important in history and is apparent when we look at how the world was about to be changed by the power of Christ's forgiveness through them: Multitudes came to experience the love & power of God through their ministries. But what did it mean exactly for them to forgive the sins of others? And what does it mean for us today? The answer to this question will take us on a journey from the Fall of the Garden and its devastating effect of sickness, to discovering how & why the disciples could heal the sick. There are ways of the world that believers adopt without a second thought, and without realizing it, while the Messiah calls it evil. Let's consider what James shares on boasting about tomorrow, the Second Coming, swearing oaths, and the true owner of all riches. Episode Notes It's becoming more common to share truth in hate. If we say we love the truth, we must have love for our brother/sister. If we say it's love to share that truth, we must do so by fruits of the Holy Spirit. When our love for the truth & His word becomes twisted, and is used as a weapon to attack fellow believers on non-fundamental, minor theological disagreements, we become breakers of the very law we say we love.
More than anything, the tongue exposes the inward parts of our heart, the kingdom we serve, and sin. James asks: "Who can tame it?" But through the power of the Holy Spirit changing our nature, the tongue will follow. James also warns that the tongues of those with influence will be judged more strictly. The compromise of the Gospel, ticking of ears, and building of own kingdoms among men is of selfish ambition & bitter jealousy - the two symptoms of the corrupted tongue. Many have picked a side when it comes to James vs. Paul, and the relationship of faith & works. We have built denominations on this very idea. It can seem as if their words stand in opposition, but what if both authors are saying the same thing, from different perspectives? Understanding these perspectives of Paul & James is essential to having a balanced understanding of the role of faith & works in our lives. And is the key to understanding the gospel itself. Many depend on their works for salvation, and many have abandoned good works entirely. But let us understand our faith to glorify the salvation of Yeshua. Every war of this world has started because of the spirit of hatred that rules the heart of the world. Men find fault with one another and divide. Men live & die over racism, nationalism, economics, sexism and even denominationalism. The poor remains hungry, women remain dictated, our citizenship remains worldly, or our assembly racially-single. But according to James 2, partiality is to be put away from believers. God is calling you to breach worldly barriers for Kingdom victories. Support Rise on Fire Ministries by contributing to their tip jar: https://tips.pinecast.com/jar/rise-on-fire
In an age of Lawlessness, many Christians have emptied their faith of works, for a comfortable new faith that requires no change, no repentance, and no fruit. But James was sent for a time such as this: To proclaim the gospel of salvation by faith in the Messiah, Jesus. The One who will not be mocked, who calls believers everywhere to not only hear, but become doers of the Word Support Rise on Fire Ministries by contributing to their tip jar: https://tips.pinecast.com/jar/rise-on-fire

For additional notes and resources check out Douglas' website.108 power-packed verses!Chapter 1 introduces the 12 themes of chapters 2-5.James is practical. James covers a whole range of everyday life issues: how we respond to pain and suffering, dealing with conflict, how our speech can help or harm, dealing with poverty and wealth, even how we should think about planning for the future. We never struggle for application!James is direct. James moves quickly from issue to issue. Much of what he says is straightforward to understand. There is no chance for us to get bogged down.James is vivid. Throughout the letter James gives us pictures and illustrations to help his message hit home in a vivid way. He speaks of forest fires, fruit-bearing plants, sea ships, horses—and that's just one chapter! The preacher does not have to scratch his head trying to think up illustrations for the message!James is stretching. James assumes that the gospel touches every area of life. He does not let us off the hook in any of them! James likens God's word to a mirror, and studying his own letter certainly has the effect of revealing to us what our hearts and attitudes are truly like.James is encouraging. Underlying all that James says is a desire to magnify Jesus Christ. It is Christ's glory that drives everything. Along the way James gives us wonderful reminders of the grace and goodness of God. He can afford to be challenging because the grace of God is so compelling.Five verses that strike me personally are 1:19; 2:8; 3:1; 4:13; 5:20. What strikes you? How is God's Word speaking to you—not only in James, but in all 66 inspired books in Scripture?
James 5:7-12 “Meanwhile, brothers and sisters, we must be patient and filled with expectation as we wait for the appearing of the Lord. Think about the farmer who has to patiently wait for the earth's harvest as it ripens because of the early and latter rains. So you also, keep your hopes high and be patient, for the presence of the Lord is drawing closer. Since each of you are part of God's family never complain or grumble about each other so that judgment will not come on you, for the true Judge is near and very ready to appear! My brothers and sisters, take the prophets as your mentors. They have prophesied in the name of the Lord and it brought them great sufferings, yet they patiently endured. We honor them as our heroes because they remained faithful even while enduring great sufferings. And you have heard of all that Job went through and we can now see that the Lord ultimately treated him with wonderful kindness, revealing how tenderhearted he really is! Above all we must be those who never need to verify our speech as truthful by swearing by the heavens or the earth or any other oath. But instead, we must be so full of integrity that our “Yes” or “No” is convincing enough and we do not stumble into hypocrisy.” In this episode, Chris Austin talks about walking with integrity, the strengthening of your heart, and the coming of the lord in the present moment as well as in the future.
