In this thought-provoking episode of the Voxology Podcast, Mike and Tim tackle the implications of “thoughts and prayers” in moments of societal crisis to addressing the pervasive dehumanization in modern culture. Mike and Tim challenge listeners to rethink how faith shapes engagement with justice and truth. Through examples like prophetic critique in scripture and the importance of naming reality amidst propaganda, the episode offers actionable insights for embodying Jesus' teachings in a culture dominated by division and misinformation. The conversation starts with the pressing challenges of navigating life in a post-truth world while standing for justice and truth. The conversation delves into the intersections of faith and politics, exploring how Christians can respond to cultural issues with cruciformity and humility. Drawing from scripture, theology, and practical insights, the hosts reflect on the role of the church in society, the importance of lamenting injustice, and fostering hope through communal witness. Years ago a major art gallery sponsored a competition for painters. They were offering prizes for the best painting on the subject of "Peace." As the attenders browsed through the entries, most had decided that one certain painting was almost sure to win. It portrayed this lush green pasture under a vivid blue sky, with the cows grazing lazily and a little boy walking through the grass with his fishing pole over his shoulder. It really made you feel all peaceful. But it came in second. The painting that won was a big surprise. The scene was the ocean in a violent storm. The sky was ominous, the lightning was cutting across the sky, and the waves were crashing into the rock walls of the cliffs by the shore. No peace. But you had to look twice to understand what was going on. There, about halfway up the cliff was a birds' nest, tucked into a tiny hollow in the rock. A mother bird was sitting on that nest with her little babies, tucked underneath her, sleeping soundly. That was peace! I'm Ron Hutchcraft and I want to have A Word With You today about "Peace in the Midst of the Storm." Now, that was the title of the prize-winning painting - and rightly so, because peace is not just the absence of a storm. It's peace in the middle of the storm. The kind of peace many of us could use right now; the kind of peace maybe you could have right now if you're resting where you ought to be. As our headlines have become more dominated with new dangers, as so many hearts have been struggling with new anxieties and new fears, I think we're ready for the incredible peace offered in Psalm 46. I call it "Good News for Troubled Times." It's our word for today from the Word of God. Maybe it should be our word for every day right now! "God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble." So, the more troubled things are, the more present God makes Himself. The psalmist then says, "Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea, though its waters roar and foam and the mountains quake with their surging." Everything's collapsing here - things that have always been there for us. But no fear. Why? "God is our refuge and strength." This psalm continues: "There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God, the holy place where The Most High dwells." Where does God live today? Well, it's in those who belong to Him through faith in Jesus. So this might be about you. "God is within her, and she will not fall...Nations are in uproar, kingdoms fall...the Lord Almighty is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress." Then as everything seems to be melting down, God says, "Be still, and know that I am God." OK, turn off the news, leave those other voices, and get where you can just be with God. And realize that as long as you're in His hands, there's no such thing as out of control. He is still God and you are still His! And if you have never given yourself to Jesus, the Man who died for you to pay for your sin, I'd say there's never been a better time than this. With so much uncertainty, it's so great to know that you're safe forever in a relationship with Him. I wonder if there's ever been a time when you began your personal relationship with Jesus. Not just have a religion about Jesus or agree with Jesus, but when you've pinned all your hopes on Him as the man who died for your sin and rose from the grave to give you eternal life. If you want that security, if you want that anchor, if you want that forgiveness, that rock to stand on, tell Him that today. Say, "Jesus, I want to belong to You. I'm giving myself to You because You gave yourself for me." I'd love to have you go to our website today because there is help to be sure that you are anchored to Jesus Christ from this day on and forever. It's called ANewStory.com. Would you check it out? When you are nesting in the care of the Lord Jesus Christ, you can rest through any storm, because you belong to the One who can give you peace in the middle of the storm.

Send us a textUrgent Prayer for Peace and Strength in Troubled Times Philippians 4:7 – @110 Daily Christian Prayer Podcast”If you'd like to support our work, you can now Buy Me a Coffee Have you ever felt your faith yo-yoing up and down, desperately needing stability in your heart and mind? That's exactly what Reverend Ben Cooper addresses in this powerful five-minute prayer session focused entirely on peace – not just any peace, but the divine peace described in Philippians 4:7 that "transcends all understanding."This prayer reaches far beyond personal serenity, extending to churches experiencing division, war-torn regions like Jerusalem and the Middle East, families under stress, and global leaders making critical decisions. With remarkable vulnerability, Reverend Cooper admits, "Lord, my mind needs guarding... my heart needs stability," articulating what many believers feel but struggle to express. His candid admission about the instability many experience in their faith journey resonates deeply as he prays, "Lord, we cannot live yo-yoing in faith, out of faith."What makes this prayer session particularly meaningful is how it connects peace to our everyday moments. Whether you're commuting, on the school run, sitting on the edge of your bed, or grabbing a sandwich, God's transcendent peace is available to you. The prayer also beautifully links peace with truth and justice, reminding us that biblical peace isn't a superficial calm but emerges from addressing injustice and embracing truth. As Reverend Cooper declares, "Through the truth there is peace." The session concludes with the comforting assurance that even "as we walk through the valley of the shadow of death, we will fear no evil because we carry peace."Join our growing community of believers seeking God's peace in tumultuous times. In this kickoff to the One Chapter Wonders series, Pastor Jeff McNicol draws a parallel between musical “one hit wonders” and the short yet powerful one-chapter books of the Bible—beginning with Obadiah. Written during the dark period after Jerusalem's destruction in 586 BC, Obadiah's prophecy confronts the nation of Edom—descendants of Esau—for their arrogance, indifference, and hostility toward Israel. The message challenges believers to confront pride, reject complacency, act courageously in the face of need, and rest confidently in God's justice and provision. Even in troubled times, the “plain truths” of Obadiah offer both conviction and hope.
The world feels raw these days. Heat waves stack one upon another, storms sweep in with fury, and the news from far-off lands carries sorrow and anger in equal measure. On top of that, each of us is carrying the weight of our own daily struggles: illness, loss, uncertainty. In my own life, I recently faced a sudden illness that left me bedridden for weeks, unable to walk unassisted or even muster the energy to speak prayers aloud. It was a season of deep vulnerability, the kind that none of us chooses and all of us will eventually encounter.Yet even in the midst of weakness, I discovered that my Christopagan faith was not an abstract belief to be set on a shelf, it was a living presence, a thread binding me to something larger than my pain. I have prayed every night for years, calling the four archangels, the spirits of earth, sea, and sky, and the shining presence of the Shekinah to watch over my home. When I could no longer speak those prayers, I felt them rising on their own, carried for me. In dreams or visions, the archangels stood their posts, my ancestors whispered courage, and even a beloved cat long gone curled on my chest in comfort. Whether mystical reality or the gift of my imagination, it didn't matter. The truth was in the experience: I was not alone.Faith, at its best, is not about clinging to rules or policing belief. It is about connection. The Latin root of “religion” means “to bind together,” and in crisis, that bond can hold us steady when everything else shakes. My connection to Brigid, to Jesus and Mary, to the very earth beneath me, reminded me that I was part of a living web that no illness could sever. Brian and I spoke often about how such times ripple out to affect everyone in the circle. The one who is sick can feel like a burden; the one caring for them can feel helpless, even guilty for their own moments of frustration. Faith helps break these spirals, not by erasing the hardship, but by reminding us of the deeper unity between us.This is why practice matters before the storm comes. A deep, rooted faith equips us to meet our anger, fear, and grief without being consumed by them. As Brian reflected, crisis tempts us toward quick, destructive reactions, but the steady discipline of prayer, ritual, and connection gives us other options. It teaches us to recognize the warning signs of a “dark path” and to choose the harder, more life-giving way. It doesn't guarantee the storm will pass quickly or painlessly. But it hedges our chances. It keeps our roots deep enough to hold fast. And the roots do not all look the same. For me, it is Brigid's forge, Julian of Norwich's “all shall be peace,” the spirits of earth, sea, and sky. For others, it may be justice, love, the law, or the tending of the land. The divine dwells in all things, and whatever soil allows you to grow in strength and compassion that is where you must plant yourself. When we are rooted in what is holy to us, no one can poison that soil. The connection remains, carrying us through even the harshest seasons. If I learned anything from my recent trial, it is that rooting ourselves in faith is not a single act, but a habit of presence. We plant the seed in moments of peace, water it with daily practice, and strengthen it through small acts of courage and devotion. Then, when the winds rise, the tree of our faith does not suddenly appear. It is already there, grown over years, able to bend without breaking. In that way, the crisis does not build the faith; it reveals it. And perhaps that is the quiet promise faith makes to each of us: not that we will escape the fires and floods of life, but that when they come, we will find ourselves already held, already connected, already home. Thanks for reading! In this NBN episode, host Hollay Ghadery interviews author and academic James Cairns about his collection of essays, In Crisis, On Crisis: Essays in Troubled Times (Wolsak & Wynn, 2025). In 2022, the Collins Dictionary announced that its word of the year was “permacrisis,” which it defined as “an extended period of instability and insecurity, especially one resulting from a series of catastrophic events.” Have we reached a breaking point, arrived at the moment of truth? If so, what now? If not, why do so many people say we're living through a period of unprecedented crises? Drawing on social research, pop culture and literature, as well as on his experience as an activist, father and teacher, James Cairns explores the ecological crisis, Trump's return to power amid the so-called crisis of democracy, his own struggle with addiction and other moments of truth facing us today. In a series of insightful essays that move deftly between personal, theoretical and historical approaches he considers not only what makes something a crisis, but also how to navigate the effect of these destabilizing times on ourselves, on our families and on the world. James Cairns lives with his family in Paris, Ontario, on territory that the Haldimand Treaty of 1784 recognizes as belonging to the Six Nations of the Grand River in perpetuity. He is a professor in the Department of Indigenous Studies, Law and Social Justice at Wilfrid Laurier University, where his courses and research focus on political theory and social movements. James is a staff writer at the Hamilton Review of Books, and the community relations director for the Paris-based Riverside Reading Series. James has published three books with the University of Toronto Press, most recently, The Myth of the Age of Entitlement: Millennials, Austerity, and Hope (2017), as well as numerous essays in periodicals such as Canadian Notes & Queries, the Montreal Review of Books, Briarpatch, TOPIA, Rethinking Marxism and the Journal of Canadian Studies. Spirit Rock Meditation Center: dharma talks and meditation instruction
(Spirit Rock Meditation Center)
Paul spent 6 years in various prisons and not because he put dodgy mushrooms in someones stew, he just had a point of view that upset the religious leaders of his time. But he never seemed to let it get him down. He wrote letters and found ways to be useful. Hope in times like this is rare and worth exploring. Somehow a combination of purpose, secure identity and faith created the sort of hope he was able to draw upon. As Chuck Nolan played by Tom Hanks in the movie Castaway says, you never know what the tide will bring in. Maybe we can all do the same.
In a world that often feels divided the concept of tolerance takes on a new meaning. In the latest episode of our podcast, I would like us to explore the idea of practicing tolerance not as a passive act, but as a radical choice that reflects our deepest values. Acknowledging the unprecedented challenges we face today, "Who are we choosing to be in this moment?" Asking ourselves this question encourages us to reflect on our actions and the narratives we create about ourselves during difficult times. Having a legacy mindset shifts our focus from performative activism to meaningful contributions that align with our values. Are you ready to rise and shine? The reality of impermanence and the inevitable experience of loss is enough in life to give us a wound. On the path of transformation, we need a broken heart that only God—which can be referred to in many ways such as the Divine or the Absolute—can heal. Heartbreak is extreme in the times we are living in. Bittersweet has an in-between quality where we experience different deep feelings at the same time. Caring is needed to work with bittersweetness in an alchemical way. Grief is a spiritual enzyme. A broken heart encompasses the suffering of the world; it can be inspirational and turn us to want to relieve the suffering of others. A broken heart can teach us how to pray and have humility in the face of the awe, wonder, and mystery of creation. We can't understand the Divine, but we can cultivate trust which may start with recognizing that we don't. It's important to stay present to anger and outrage until we get underneath to the sadness that is there, which can allow the transcendent to come into play and for a hallelujah to arise. It's easy to bypass our personal wounds. We may see parts of us as enemies, but we only change by loving all of ourselves, which is not about indulgence. Personal wounds are a way into the objective wound of a broken heart. The Sage is established in universal love and loves us as we are. When we have a clear moment, we can re-affirm our intention to the Universe. When we feel lost, we can do the next right thing. Freely offering gratuitous goodness is a gesture of love. The point of living may be to experience both the human and the transcendent. Wars and rumors of wars.He said it would happen, so we wouldn't be caught off guard.Fear is loud right now. But so is His truthLet's talk about it!
This message calls Christians to reflect on current global events, particularly the tensions between Israel and Iran, in light of biblical prophecy. It emphasizes the importance of understanding the spiritual dimension behind political conflicts and remaining rooted in God's Word. The sermon highlights how Scripture, including passages from Ezekiel, Matthew, and Ephesians, speaks to the times we live in. Believers are encouraged to pray for peace, seek wisdom, and share the Gospel with urgency and faith. Ultimately, the message reminds us that our true hope lies not in earthly leaders, but in Jesus Christ and His unshakable kingdom. #iran #Israel #MiddleEast #Trump

2025-07-08 | Dharma Talk | Living the Paramitas in Troubled Times | Ellen Hippard by Appamada
In this sermon “Staying Vigilant in Troubled Times” urges believers to remain spiritually alert amid a morally chaotic and deceptive culture that reflects the warnings in 2 Timothy 3. Pastor Willie emphasizes the danger of counterfeit faith and worldly influences—especially through technology—and calls Christians to pursue genuine transformation through God's power, not just religious appearances. Ultimately, the message challenges individuals, especially parents and spiritual leaders, to guard their homes, choose godly influences, and live differently as part of God's called-out people.

What do we do when the world feels like it's unraveling? How to respond when our systems—political, economic, medical—feel brittle, even broken? It's easy to fall into despair, or look away. But maybe what we're being asked to do is look closer. To stay present. In this conversation with Ed Neal and Mel Hopper Koppelman, we explore the edges where medicine, ecology, and culture meet. Both are thinkers who don't shy away from complexity. Ed draws from classical Chinese texts and ecological systems. Mel, from her knowledge of science and systems thinking.Listen into this discussion as we explore the role of Chinese medicine in times of crisis, the importance of narrative and metaphor in clinical work, how despair and possibility coexist, and the invitation to practice medicine as an act of presence and participation.
