James 2:14–26 warns against reducing Christianity to a faith of empty words, void of action. While we are not part of God's family because of what we do, the faith that saves is never alone, it is living and active. James points us to Rahab and Abraham, where we see faith both proclaimed and demonstrated through mercy and obedience, even when trust in God was costly. Saved by grace through faith, believers are called to a living faith that bears fruit and longs for God's righteousness.
James 2:20-26 (NASB) 20 But are you willing to acknowledge, you foolish person, that faith without works is useless? 21 Was our father Abraham not justified by works when he offered up his son Isaac on the altar? 22 You see that faith was working with his works, and as a result of the works, faith was perfected; 23 and the Scripture was fulfilled which says, “And Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness,” and he was called a friend of God. 24 You see that a person is justified by works and not by faith alone. 25 In the same way, was Rahab the prostitute not justified by works also when she received the messengers and sent them out by another way? 26 For just as the body without the spirit is dead, so also faith without works is dead. The genuineness of your faith in Jesus Christ is proven by your works. 1) It is foolish to believe that a faith without works is saving faith (2:20-25) Real Faith Example #1 – Abraham Real Faith Example #2 – Rahab 2) Faith without works is dead faith (2:26)

The Book of James deals a deck of wisdom, guiding us to live with faith, love, and discernment through actionable teachings, inspired by Proverbs and the Sermon on the Mount. Like a dealer laying out cards, James introduces God's wisdom as a gift, always there during trials, when we need guidance, and when tempted to be selfish or petty. Stephen Howard will challenge us to look for evidence of our faith from James 2:14-26. As you prepare for the message, please read the passage and ask yourself:"If I was on trial for being a Christian, would there be enough evidence to confict me? Why or why not?"

More broken than we know, more loved than we can comprehend. Welcome to the weekly sermon podcast of Grace Church Bellingham.
The Value Of Testing In The Development Of Faith James 1 – Session 3 October 19, 2025 Review: Tests, trials, temptations: only know the true value of something when (and after) it is tested! True patience is a strong force of the Holy Spirit, that bears a strong inner witness that grants a confidence that God is at work in every circumstance and that He will sustain you and therefore, you will see His victory! “Let”, Allow patience …. Can't “work it up”. Patience is deposited in your reborn spirit. It must be accessed by faith and developed through obedience. (Galatians 5:22; 1 Corinthians 13:4) Godly patience involves persistent waiting (on relief, results desired), but it is undergirded with confident expectation that the Lord is “at hand” and is “at work”! (Philippians 4:5; Philippians 2:13) James 1:9 – “Glory in high position (A few examples!) Child of the Most High God (John 1:12) Heir of God, joint-heir with Christ (Romans 8:16, 17) Forgiven, made Holy, Righteous, Accepted, Beloved in Christ (Ephesians 1:3-7) Granted every spiritual blessing in Christ (Ephesians 1:3-7) Guaranteed eternal life (John 3:16) Given Grace in God's eyes and Favor for life's journey (Ephesians 2:8,9) Granted unconditional love (1 John 4:16-18) Guaranteed victory over death and every enemy (Romans 8:31-37) Granted an Intercessor in Heaven (Romans 8:34) James 1:10-11 “The rich …. “Humiliation” what it does NOT mean (See Timothy 6:17,18) Humble self: Recognize True Security, Identity (tool not source) James 1:12 The Blessing of enduring temptation The “Crown” implies that one has come through intense tests, trials, temptations James 1:13-15 The true source of temptation (We will NOT succeed in our own strength!

The Value Of Testing In The Development Of Faith James 1 – Session 2 October 12, 2025 Review: Responding to tests, trials, temptations: A key to our successful development! James 1:6-8 – Faith: Essential For Relationship with God and all that flows from Him! (Hebrews 11:6) Faith's Origin: “Hearing His Word” (Romans 10:17); His Gift deposited in you (Ephesians 2:8,9); All receive “a measure” (Romans 12:3) Satan's agenda: Stop the Word process (Mark 4:15) The poison of unbelief: torment, instability To believe, or to doubt, is a choice! (The difference in mind and heart) (See Mark 11:23) ✸Get your mind, heart lined up! What are you saying (2 Corinthians 4:13) Attacking Doubt Reinforce what you Do Know Talk back! Speak to the poisonous doubt! (Proverbs 18:21; Joshua 1:8) Refresh your spirit with worship and prayer! Engage prayer covering, support in the battle! James 1:9 Lowly: Without worldly position, proud, no monetary wealth, etc. Exaltation: Relationship with King, family of God, Citizen of Heaven, inheritance of every spiritual blessing. James 1:10 The rich, in this book, refers to those whose identity and security is in their possessions and positions. They are arrogant and oppress those without the trappings of wealth. ✸The Lord will be Gracious and help us in our journey (Mark 9:24)
James 2:14-26 - - Sept 6, 2015
The Value Of Testing In The Development Of Faith James 1 October 5, 2025 James 1:1 – Bondservant: set free from slavery but chose to stay and serve the Master who set him free! Half brother of Jesus (James was born of Joseph and Mary) Resurrection was Gamechanger! (1 Corinthians 15:7) Pastor of the Church at Jerusalem and its leaders! (Acts 12:17; Acts 15:13; Acts 21:8; Galatians 1:19; Galatians 2:9) Martyred in 60's A.D. Practical, “Boots on the Ground” letter James 1:1,2 – Twelve tribes disbursed ….” (See Acts 8:1-4; Genesis 50:20; 1Corinthians 2:8) God can take what the enemy desires for evil and use it against the enemy and, ultimately, for His glory and our good! “Count it” …. An act of the will. “When”…. Not if; various (many, of different sorts); “life happens” Trials …. Peirasmos (tests, trials, temptations) ✼God sometimes uses the enemy as an “unwilling agent” James 1:3 Knowing …. Not just in the mind, surface, but in your “knower”, your spirit (When the Holy Spirit is dwelling and bearing witness!) Testing …. Proof …. Impurities burned out via fire Produces …. Katergazomai …. “works out”, develops Patience …. Steadfast endurance “to bear up” in the wait! James 1:4 Perfect …. Fully mature, complete James 1:5 Wisdom …. The ability to see from God's perspective. Must be received, through request by Faith (confident assurance based on His Word)
Sunday School class led by Rev. W. Reid Hankins at Trinity Presbyterian Church (OPC) on 09/14/2025 in Petaluma, CA. This week we surveyed James. The post Surveying The Faith: James appeared first on Trinity Presbyterian Church North Bay (OPC).
James 1:5-8 (NASB) 5 But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all generously and without reproach, and it will be given to him. 6 But he must ask in faith without any doubting, for the one who doubts is like the surf of the sea, driven and tossed by the wind. 7 For that person ought not to expect that he will receive anything from the Lord, 8 being a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways. Theme: Christians should seek spiritual maturity by asking God for wisdom and praying with a believing heart. Some “How-tos” of gaining wisdom and making petitions to God 1) Acknowledge your need for wisdom (1:5) 2) Ask God for wisdom (1:5) 3) Ask God in faith, for everything (1:6-8)

Welcome to the Grace in Focus podcast. Today, Bob Wilkin and Ken Yates continue a series on “Tough Texts,” and will be looking at James 2 and the “Faith without works is dead” phrase. Is there such a thing as dead faith? If there are no works or fruit, is faith faulty? Is this about
In the first 12 verses of James, he's been talking about trials. Now, in verse 13, he switches the topic to temptation. Perhaps better than any other passage in the NT, James lays out a process for how temptation and sin work in our lives.
Big Idea: Because prayer is powerful, we must pray in all circumstances by faith.
Lance, Craig, and Zach discuss how faith impacts actions and how a living faith might impact our world for good.
Big Idea: Faith endures patiently awaiting the return of Christ.
Big Idea: Riches lead to ruin when they are lived for and hoarded rather than used for Christ and His Kingdom.
Wisdom & Faith James 1:1-8 1 James, a servant of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ, To the twelve tribes in the Dispersion: Greetings. 2 Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, 3 for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness. 4 And let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing. 5 If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him. 6 But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea that is driven and tossed by the wind. 7 For that person must not suppose that he will receive anything from the Lord; 8 he is a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways. I. Called as a servant of God II. Counted for the joy of God III. Curious for the wisdom of God
Series: James - Walk the Talk
What causes fights, division, and spiritual drift in the church? In James 4:1–10, we're confronted with the harsh truth: the problem isn't just “out there,” it's in us. Our passions wage war within us, our loyalties are split, and far too often, we live like friends of the world while claiming to follow Jesus.Need Prayer?
Is there such a thing as a mature Christian? Today, we hear from Trevor Jenkins. Drawing from James 2, this teaching explores the difference between faith and faith in action and how we R maturing with the 4 R's.▶ Discover why maturing faith is not a destination but a daily process.▶ Hear why resistance, reverence, relationship, and residence matter in your walk with God.New Vision Church serves online and in Fayetteville, Georgia.newvisionc.comBelong. James doesn't mince words: faith without works is dead. But that doesn't mean we earn our salvation—it means that true saving faith will always overflow in action. Through examples like Abraham and Rahab, we're reminded that faith is vindicated before others by our obedience and love.Need Prayer?
Insights on attitude today from pastor Ray Bentley. What's the best attitude of the heart you can have? It's to have a merciful heart. Jesus was known for being merciful. He was known to the sinners as a friend of sinners because he was merciful. He got in trouble with the religious leaders for the same reputation being too mercy spread.
Albert Einstein said, make things as simple as possible, but no simpler. Today, pastor Ray Bentley makes the Christian life simple. If we would live by this one royal law to love our neighbor as we love ourselves, we wouldn't need all the other laws that there are. Basically, the reason we have so many laws is because nobody loves one another.
