Patience in Suffering (James 5:7-11) - Elita Friesen | May 18, 2025The book of James describes an integrated faith & life—a life made whole in its holiness. James was the pastor of the first Christian church in Jerusalem, writing to Jewish believers living outside the nation of Israel. The words of James are God's word for us—relevant and immediately applicable to our lives. As we journey through the book of James, immersing ourselves in the symbolic world + pressing concerns of the first century followers of Jesus, we learn to apply James' message to our lives in the 21st century. The Way Church is a church in Vancouver joining Jesus in the restoration of all things. We have all experienced suffering. As Rob preaches on James 5:7-11, we read that while it is normal to acknowledge the pain we are experiencing, there is hope in the truth that God is in control.

In times and seasons where we fall victim to pain and suffering, we are prone to certain behaviors. We try and take the situation under our control and alleviate our pain and suffering as quickly as possible. However, James' best advice for us in the face of pain and suffering is to be patient and persevere so that we might learn to depend on God even more. - Pastor Arek O'ConnellSupport the show

Join us as we explore what it means to be patient as a Christian. We sometimes think this is just enduring suffering. But what if it was something more? This week we learn that being patient as a Christian is actually about self-control in the face of suffering. Its purpose is for us to learn to not retaliate and refrain from seeking revenge. For what reason? Because God's patience with us is why Jesus's return is yet to come. Giving us time to repent before its too late. We look at how standing firm in the faith is the antidote to prevent us from spiralling into vindictiveness and despair.
Although we may not be able to see the purpose of our suffering, we can still trust God's character. Join us as Pastor Phil Moser unpacks this topic in our ongoing series, James: A Faith Well Lived.

Pastor Matt Clark's sermon "Enduring Suffering" focuses on the importance of patience, standing firm in faith, and avoiding grumbling as ways to navigate trials. He uses biblical examples like Job and the prophets to illustrate endurance and emphasizes viewing suffering as an opportunity for growth. The sermon encourages believers to trust in God's timing and wisdom, reminding them that He is greater than any problem they may face. Ultimately, enduring suffering with faith and hope leads to spiritual maturity and a deeper connection to God.
James 5:5-10 speaks about the judgment awaiting the wealthy who have exploited the poor, as well as the patience and endurance of the righteous in the face of suffering. James advises the righteous to be patient in their suffering, like farmers waiting for the harvest. He encourages them to stand firm in their faith, despite the injustices they face. He praises the prophets who spoke in the name of the Lord as examples of endurance and steadfastness in the face of suffering. 'Be patient, then, brothers and sisters, until the Lord's coming. See how the farmer waits for the land to yield its valuable crop, patiently waiting for the autumn and spring rains. You too, be patient and stand firm, because the Lord's coming is near. Don't grumble against one another, brothers and sisters, or you will be judged. The Judge is standing at the door! Brothers and sisters, as an example of patience in the face of suffering, take the prophets who spoke in the name of the Lord.' (James 5.5-10, NIV.)

Steadfast in Suffering, James 5:7–12 Life in this world, life after the “great catastrophe” of sin is hard. Will it always be this way? How do we remain steadfast? This week's text, James 5:7–12, gives us a theme or banner for a faith-filled life in a broken world: patience. What does patient fortitude look like in your situation? Clinging to the promises of God in the middle of the “invisible” season of waiting. Establishing your heart to follow Christ and to do whatever the will of God holds for you. Calling to mind and living in light of the soon return of the Lord Christ. Humbly repenting of a grumbling heart and seeking to point out evidences of grace in one another instead. Following in the footsteps of other patient and hope-filled believers and running with perseverance the race that is set before us. (Find a treasure trove of audio messages sharing such stories here: Biography Messages by John Piper) Trusting the merciful, compassionate purposes of God even when you don't understand. Being a woman of your word and trusting God for the outcome. We press on in patient fortitude, knowing that “when [we] have stood the test, [we] will receive the crown of life, which God has promised to those who love him” (James 1:12). May the Lord find us and keep us faithful.

James 1:1-18 1 James, a servant of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ, To the twelve tribes in the Dispersion: Greetings. 2 Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, 3 for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness. 4 And let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing. 5 If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him. 6 But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea that is driven and tossed by the wind. 7 For that person must not suppose that he will receive anything from the Lord; 8 he is a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways. 9 Let the lowly brother boast in his exaltation, 10 and the rich in his humiliation, because like a flower of the grass he will pass away. 11 For the sun rises with its scorching heat and withers the grass; its flower falls, and its beauty perishes. So also will the rich man fade away in the midst of his pursuits. 12 Blessed is the man who remains steadfast under trial, for when he has stood the test he will receive the crown of life, which God has promised to those who love him. 13 Let no one say when he is tempted, “I am being tempted by God,” for God cannot be tempted with evil, and he himself tempts no one. 14 But each person is tempted when he is lured and enticed by his own desire. 15 Then desire when it has conceived gives birth to sin, and sin when it is fully grown brings forth death. 16 Do not be deceived, my beloved brothers. 17 Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change. 18 Of his own will he brought us forth by the word of truth, that we should be a kind of first fruits of his creatures. Suffering is the gift no one wants, but that everyone needs. One of the main ways we grow in our faith and build loving relationships is through affliction. In this week's lesson we learn... How suffering helps us minister to others One of the ways we build loving relationships is by a shared experience in suffering How God redeems our suffering for his good purposes The kind of trials we face where comfort is needed What's the difference between a trial and temptation? An encouraging reminder that for the believer, all suffering is temporary! Thanks for listening. This is week six in an 11-week introduction to biblical counseling called, "Instruments in the Redeemer's Hands." To order a Study Guide please click here.

In James today, we see a word about suffering. We know that we will suffer; we even see that promise here. But we know that we do not suffer alone when we suffer because God is with us. That suffering will produce in us endurance, which will help our faith be strong. With Job, we see the great things that God can do. We can trust in suffering, knowing that God can bring something good out of even the worst suffering. Join us for our daily reflections with Andy. As we wrap up the book of James we see that he finishes with what he started the book with; a call to endure in suffering and to respond in a godly manners. Sometimes we suffer from sin and we need prayer but sometimes we just grumble and complain about it. Either way, we need to reject those modes of responding to suffering a walk with God in faith and obedience. Lastly James encourages us to not only look to ourselves in our walk but to keep an eye on those around us who may be suffering and to steer them back to Christ if wee see them pursuing world ways of dealing with hardships. When we're in the midst of suffering it becomes easier to question the goodness and character of God. James is encouraging us to turn to God rather than away from Him. In the moments when hardships come we have a rock solid identity in Christ that we need to rely on and trust that God who loved us in the good times loves us still when things seem to be going sideways.Follow my ministry with InFaith by going to:https://www.facebook.com/DennisInFaithIf you have any questions or comments that you'd like me to address you can shoot me an email to dennissutherby@infaith.orgAnd if you'd like to support my ministry with InFaith you can text the word "discipleship" to 41444 or head over to https://infaith.org/dennis-sutherby and give there. In this episode of Pray the Word on James 1:2–4, David Platt provides encouragement for Christians struggling by reminding them of our joy.
Let's be honest, life is hard. Because we live in a world tainted by sin, we experience suffering on a daily basis. James, a leader of the early church, wrote to believers to encourage them to endure to the end during suffering. Let's look at the life of Job and see how it points us to our compassionate and merciful God. If you want to study the themes in this passage further, consider the following passages and reflection questions: 1. Read Hebrews 11. How did the faithful men and women of old hold onto their faith? How we can imitate their faith? 2. James condemns the rich who oppress the poor. What do his words of rebuke tell you about how God views oppression? How does He take care of the oppressed? 3. Read James 1:1-12. How does James's teaching about suffering in the opening of his letter shed light on James 5:1-12? 4. Read Job 42. Consider "the outcome of the Lord's dealings" in Job's life. Write down how God is demonstrated to be full of compassion and merciful. 5. What part of James's message do you find most convicting? What is one way you can obey God's word immediately?
