Romantic relationships are sacred, powerful, and life-giving. But I don't have to tell you how difficult it is to love and let yourself be loved.Marriage and family therapist Dr. Terry Hargrave has been helping couples in crisis restore broken relationships for decades, teaching them how to get unstuck, improve communication, and move beyond destructive coping mechanisms—to find reciprocity, self-affirming confidence, emotional regulation, and a joyful, lasting love.In a world marked by loneliness, disconnection, and emotional dysregulation, Hargrave offers powerful insights on the human need for identity, safety, and belonging—and how we can heal the wounds that keep us stuck. Drawing on decades of therapeutic experience and deep personal reflection, Hargrave explains how coping mechanisms like blame, shame, control, and escape can damage relationships—and how the peace cycle of nurture, self-valuing, balanced give-and-take, and connection can restore wholeness. He discusses his unique approach to the healing and restorative power of relationships, which lifts us up to our potential, encouraging us toward a nurturing, self-valuing, non-controlling reciprocity, and true connection. In this conversation with Terry Hargrave, we discuss:How to turn around a relationship in crisis and get off the emotional rollercoasterHow to build security and trust in order to improve or repair a marriage or long-term relationshipCoping mechanisms of blame, shame, control, and escapePractical steps to learn emotional self-regulationWhat to do when only one partner is working on a relationshipThe role of the brain and neuroplasticity in relational repairAnd the spiritual underpinnings of Terry's approach to restoration therapyEpisode Highlights"It don't mean a thing if you ain't got that swing—until you claim your belovedness for yourself, nothing will change.""Relationships are a mirror—we discover who we are through how others see us.""Blame, shame, control, and escape—nothing good comes from these coping mechanisms.""Understanding doesn't produce change. Your relationship can change. But it takes a daily practice of hard work to create lasting change. And though you might fail, there is hope that you can begin again. Our coping mechanisms are not superpowers. They hurt us and the people we love.Understanding is not enough. Action and behavior has to follow for change to occur.[Any others?] It takes two to tango, but that doesn't get you off the hook from doing the work on yourself. And finally, a thriving relationship creates joy all around it, within a family, in a community, and it shows how personal relationships can change society.About Terry HargraveDr. Terry Hargrave. Hey mission fam! In this week's episode, #205 - Emotional Metabolism, I'm diving deep into what I'm calling "emotional metabolism" - a game-changing way to think about how we process our feelings. Using a fun food analogy, I explain why trying to "get rid" of anxiety or negative emotions actually makes them stronger. Instead, I share how we can learn to feel our emotions the same way we eat nutritious food - with acceptance and purpose. I break down why our brains interpret emotional experiences as threats and how resistance creates more suffering. Through real examples from missionaries and returned missionaries, I demonstrate how simply observing our emotions without judgment can transform our experience. The key takeaway? We're not meant to eliminate difficult feelings, but to metabolize them - just like our bodies process nutrients. If you're struggling with anxiety, negative thoughts, or feeling overwhelmed on your mission, this episode is for you. I'll help you understand that having challenging emotions is completely normal and part of our human design. By the end, you'll have a new perspective on emotional processing that can help you move through difficult experiences with more grace and understanding. As always, if you found this episode helpful, I want to invite you to subscribe if you aren't already, share this episode with your friends and missionaries you know, and write a review. I know this work will help LDS missionaries around the world and it would mean so much to me if you did. Until next week my friends. How often do we sit with our own pain, listen to our own needs, and truly honor what we're moving through?Today, we're diving deep into the practices, mindsets, and rituals that support us in being with ourselves—even when it's messy, raw, or uncomfortable. From sacred cacao ceremonies and journaling to setting boundaries and letting ourselves cry it out, we're sharing the very real ways we hold space for our own healing in a world that constantly tells us to keep going. Grab your cacao, your journal, or just your open heart—and join us for a conversation that's honest, vulnerable, and (as always) a little bit magical. In this episode, we explore: What “holding space” for yourself actually means Why self-compassion isn't soft—it's powerful Practices we use to support emotional processing and energy release How to recognize when you're bypassing or numbing The importance of slowing down and letting yourself feel Because the truth is… healing isn't something we check off a list. It's a sacred, ongoing relationship with ourselves. And you deserve to be held—especially by you. Hey! Thanks for listening! If you liked this episode, please send us a message. In this episode of The Healers Café, Manon Bolliger, FCAH, RBHT (facilitator and retired naturopath with 30+ years of practice) speaks to Randy Lyman about integrating emotional intelligence and spirituality into business, the power of leading from the heart, and how true fulfillment comes from purpose—not just profit. For the transcript and full story go to: https://www.drmanonbolliger.com/randy-lyman Highlights from today's episode include: Randy Lyman People know that I'm there to support them and help them win, and when they feel safe, they get along better. They don't show up with their guard all protected, right? And they know that I'm there to help them succeed, then they're going to get behind my ideas Randy Lyman 10:50 And so if I'm a leader, that means I can't get the work done by myself. I have to involve other people, and when I'm able to get the best from the group, then, that gives me power, not from a place of ego, but from a place of being able to accomplish. Manon Bolliger And in healing, it's, it's much less structured. But there's really parallels that you can pull from both. And then another thing to notice is that there's, it's also relationship based. So you work with people in your organization the same way you work with clients. ABOUT RANDY LYMAN: Randy Lyman, The Purpose-Driven Leader, is a physicist and exited founder who has redefined what it means to create purpose-driven success in the building and growth of his multiple seven-figure companies. Randy combines decades of experience in business with a deep commitment to fostering emotional intelligence and spiritual grounding. His upcoming book, The Third Element, due to be released on March 18, 2025, makes these complex concepts accessible and actionable. Randy's entrepreneurial journey began in the technical world of physics and engineering, where he founded and grew a business that became an industry leader. Despite his professional success, he experienced a pivotal moment when he realized that stress and emotional disconnection were holding back his potential and the success of his team. This realization inspired him to focus on cultivating emotional awareness and creating a culture of belonging, which led to dramatic business growth and a renewed sense of purpose. The Third Element is the culmination of Randy's insights, offering readers a powerful framework to unlock the full potential of the Law of Attraction. It reveals the missing piece in manifestation that most people overlook—emotions. Randy teaches readers how unhealed emotions may be secretly shaping their reality and how to transform them into their greatest manifesting ally. By healing old wounds and embracing emotional awareness, readers can bridge science and spirituality to create lasting abundance and personal fulfillment. Today, Randy shares these principles with individuals and organizations seeking clarity, purpose, and transformation. His teachings equip others to harness the power of emotional intelligence, foster meaningful connections, and turn stress into a tool for personal and professional growth. His work is a testament to the idea that when people feel acknowledged and connected, they achieve extraordinary results in all areas of life. Beyond his professional endeavors, Randy is a craftsman at heart, designing custom motorcycle motors and restoring classic cars—a passion that reflects his love for precision and creativity. Married and deeply committed to his family and community, Randy exemplifies the balance of visionary ambition and grounded authenticity. His mission is to inspire others to heal, connect, and unlock their full potential, proving that the journey to abundance begins with emotional awareness and transformation. Core purpose/passion: Research shows that at least 75% of leaders lack emotional intelligence which can contribute to poor team performance and success. Randy would like to discuss The Role of Emotional Intelligence in Business Success. He will discuss how addressing emotional wounds and fostering emotional intelligence can lead to measurable business outcomes. He will provide tips on how leaders can practically apply these insights to improve team performance and achieve long-term organizational success. Send us a textAre psychedelics a missing key to personal transformation in midlife? This week, I speak with Rob Grover and Gary Logan, the founders of The Journeymen Collective, a luxury guided psilocybin retreat company based in the mountains outside Vancouver, BC. These two have helped entrepreneurs, performers, couples—and yes, many women navigating perimenopause, menopause, and midlife transitions—use guided mushroom journeys to reconnect to themselves and release emotional burdens that therapy, medication, or self-help books haven't resolved. We talk grief, depression, anxiety, the inner critic, and how to tap into the body's sacred intelligence when everything feels disconnected. Rob and Gary explain the difference between “tripping” and undergoing a true guided journey, and why that distinction matters so deeply for healing and growth.Highlights: “Most people who find us have done the therapy, read the books, tried the biohacking—and still feel stuck.”– Rob Grover“This isn't about escaping—it's about meeting yourself more deeply than ever before.” – Gary LoganHow grief led both Rob and Gary to their first journeys with magic mushrooms—and why it changed everything. Why psilocybin is not a shortcut or magic bullet, but a profound reset for the nervous system. The science, spirituality, and deep preparation that goes into their luxury retreats. Why talk therapy for 10 years often gets outpaced by 4 days of immersive guided work.A frank and beautiful discussion about anger, sadness, menopause symptoms—and how they're often calls to listen to the body, not suppress it.Links + resources:Learn more: The Journeymen CollectiveFollow Rob and Gary on Instagram and LinkedInMentioned: Red School: Menstruality EducationResearch: MAPS – Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic StudiesUse code HOTFLASH20 for 20% off at MenoLabs.comEpisode sponsor: Thanks to Menolabs for sponsoring this episode.
