Your Faith Journey - Finding God Through Words, Song and Praise
Year C – 9th Sunday after Pentecost; Lectionary 19 – August 10, 2025 Pastor Megan Floyd Hebrews 11:1-3, 8-16 Luke 12:32-40 Grace and peace to you from our Lord, Jesus Christ, and from God, our Creator, in whose faithfulness we trust. Amen. *** “Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.” (Hebrews 11:1) Faith… is our trust that God is faithful… our trust that God is good for what God promises… it is our trust that Jesus really meant it when he said, “it is your Father's good pleasure to give you the kingdom.” (Luke 12:32) Faith… is not certainty… it's an act of holy listening to what the Holy Spirit is whispering to you… and then responding accordingly… it's an act of holy acknowledgment of the nudges felt deep in your gut… and then going where you feel the Spirit guiding you. Even when we don't know the outcome… when we can't see the final destination of the journey… we go anyway… Faith is not certainty… it's trusting that God's got you… that God loves you… and that God delights in providing for you. This past week, I met an amazing woman named Mona… and after talking with her for a long time, I learned that she knows many of you, too. Mona exudes joy …and hope for all that her life has been and what it will be… and gratitude to God for it all. Her energy just… sparkled! She came to the United States as an immigrant from Namibia when she was only a teenager. I'm not the best at guessing ages, but she might be around my age now. While I didn't catch the specifics of why she needed to immigrate, I heard in her story the struggle her family faced when it became plain that sending her to the US… far away from everything she'd known… was the best solution. They trusted that God would be with her through it all… that no matter what, she was cradled by the Spirit. I gathered that she was sponsored by Samaritas, and she said that her father told her… whenever you find yourself in trouble, go to the Lutherans… the Lutherans will help you. …I love that part, obviously… But sure enough… that's what she's done, and that's how she has come to know so many of you here! Mona told me that Ceclia helped her with her green card paperwork, and she checked in with Pr. Ellen many times. She was excited to share that she's graduated summa cum laude from LCC and is going to start at Cooley Law School this winter. She's also just started a job at a hotel that she loves and will be able to work around her class schedule. She is in a really good place and she's excited for life… but more than anything, she gives glory and praise to God for it all… Her joy comes from trusting God's presence in her life, for guiding her when she didn't know if her needs would be met… and living every day according to God's will. Her witness was a beautiful testament to her faith in God's promise for us all… And… she makes it look easy! The honest truth is, that when you live as close to daily struggle and hardship as it sounded like she does, there is little confusion as to the source of all good things… the source of our daily bread. God really does show up in profound ways when we're paying attention! But for those who live with a fair amount of comfort… it is much easier to confuse God's provision with our own resourcefulness… It's easier to ignore the nudging of the Spirit to follow God's way of caring for others, and instead, go our own way that cares only for ourselves. Like the parable from last week, we are tempted to stockpile our resources… our abundance… to ensure that no matter what, OUR needs will be met… but the only way to create such a stockpile… is to ignore the needs of all those around us. And yet… Jesus shows up and brings good news… Have no fear, he says… release your anxiety! For it is God's good pleasure to give you the kingdom. Do not be afraid! The one who created you… delights in caring for you. Now hear this… a flock is not an individual… the “you” in this assurance from Jesus is plural. It is God's good pleasure to give you, as a people… as a community… to give you and all your neighbors… the full body of Christ… to give you all the kingdom. And Jesus also tells us how this will be achieved… but we tend to skip over that part. Don't get me wrong, though… this isn't about receiving salvation… we are not responsible for earning our own salvation or redemption… for that is what Jesus has already done for us. But we do, however, have a responsibility… our lives need to be ready to receive the good gifts that God offers, and the sooner the better! …because the gifts are so good! The kingdom of God is not an afterlife eventuality… it is something God is building here and now, with us, inviting us in as co-creators for God's glory! So then… Have no fear, for it is God's good pleasure to give us the kingdom, and Jesus then tells us how we are to receive this gift… …Sell your possessions and give alms to the poor… build up your treasure by building up those in need! Build up your treasure… by building up those whom Jesus consistently favors… Build up your treasure… by building up those who are cast out… by building up those who are sick… by building up those who are alone… those who are hungry… those who are strangers in a foreign land. Build up your treasure… by directing your heart toward those whom Jesus favors… time and time again throughout scriptures… Build up your treasure… by building a full and diverse community where all have their needs met, including you! …where all are valued and where all are loved. THAT is the kingdom of God… and where your treasure is… there your heart will be. Your heart. It's not really about your treasure… although for your neighbor in need, it kind of is… but your treasure is both a means to an end… and something that can get in between you and God… Giving of your treasure is how you train yourself to pay attention… it's how you train your heart to care… it's how you actively engage with the fullness of the community around you. So it's not as much about your treasure… as it is about your heart… your love… Jesus wants your heart. Giving of your treasure… is how we train our hearts to go where our human nature wouldn't normally go. Our human nature is to look at our resources and see scarcity, and to feed our anxiety by storing up our treasure in earthly containers. But in God's kingdom… we look out at our resources and see an abundance, enough to feed all who are hungry, and in our sharing, we are richly blessed. So have no fear! Trust in God, your Creator, for it is God's good pleasure to give us the kingdom… and here is how we are to receive such a splendid gift… …by letting go of our fear… by becoming more like Mona… By trusting that God will continue to provide, and God will continue to guide us each day to those we can share our life with and build our community with… so we can delight in the ways that we bless each other, each according to their gifts… …in the promised and ever-unfolding kingdom of God. Our God delights in you… delights in providing for you… and God is delighted when we figure out how to receive God's blessing for us. For it is God's good pleasure to give us the kingdom. So trust in the promises and provision of the Lord, your God… and have no fear. Amen.

Joining Jesus - Part 2: Walk By Faith
In 2 Corinthians 5:7 Paul tells the church in Corinth that despite all the obstacles they faced in their journey to minister the Gospel they could keep going because they were walking by faith and not by sight. Walking by sight is the opposite of walking by faith. When we walk by sight we are not pleasing to God. 10 of the 12 spies walked by sight but despite getting ready to be stoned Joshua and Caleb walked by faith. Peter walked by sight when he sunk after he walked on water. Christians tend to want to relate to Joshua and Caleb or Peter when he walked on water not recognizing many instead resemble the 10 spies and Peter who sunk in the water.
In this deeply real and refreshingly fun conversation, we talk about walking by faith—not by sight—and what that actually looks like in today's world. From laughter and spontaneous hymns to raw moments of despair, this is a message of hope, purpose, and perspective. #WalkByFaithNotBySight #CITAMChurchOnline #ChurchEverydayGet in touch with us:http://www.citam.org/churchonline@citam.org(+254) 784 277 277(+254) 728 221 221

Paul wrote to Christians, “don't get drunk with wine, which leads to reckless actions, but be filled by the Spirit” (Eph 5:18 CSB). If a believer consumes too much alcohol, it can lead to cognitive impairment and harmful behavior. But the believer who is filled with the Spirit will possess divine viewpoint and manifest the fruit of godliness, worship, and thankfulness to the Lord (Eph 5:19-20). To be filled with the Spirit (Eph 5:18) means to be under the guiding influence of the Holy Spirit, who directs the believer's thoughts, attitudes, and actions in accordance with God's revealed will in Scripture. It does not mean getting more of the Spirit—every believer already has the indwelling Spirit from the moment of salvation (1 Cor 6:19; Gal 3:2). Rather, it means the Holy Spirit gets more of you—your mind, your volition, your conduct. According to Chafer, “To be filled with the Spirit is to have the Spirit fulfilling in us all that He came into our hearts to do.”[1] The Greek word translated filled is πληρόω (plēroō), which literally means “to make full” (BDAG, 827), but it often carries the figurative sense of being dominated, influenced, or characterized by something.[2] In Ephesians 5:18, the present passive imperative form (πληροῦσθε) indicates a continuous command for the believer to keep on being filled—that is, habitually directed and empowered by the Spirit. The passive voice implies this is something done to us, not by us; it's not something we manufacture, but something we allow through yielding. The imperative mood makes it a command to be obeyed, and this by faith (2 Cor 5:7; Heb 10:38). This idea of internal influence is seen elsewhere—where hearts are filled with sorrow (John 16:6), minds with divine wisdom (Col 1:9), or lives with righteous fruit (Phil 1:11). In each case, the idea is a dominating influence that shapes behavior (cf. Luke 4:28; 5:26; Acts 13:45). Likewise, being filled with the Spirit means being so under His influence that our attitudes, decisions, and actions align with God's will. Ephesians 5:18-21 shows the fruit of Spirit-filling: joyful singing, gratitude, and submission. The parallel in Colossians 3:16 says, “Let the word of Christ richly dwell within you,” linking the Spirit's filling with Scripture's influence. The Spirit of God guides us by means of the Word of God, which He helps us understand and which He recalls to our thinking when needed. As we learn to walk by the Spirit (Gal 5:16), in step with His guidance, the fruit of the Spirit becomes manifest (Gal 5:22-23). The Spirit Illumines and Recalls Scripture The Spirit of God teaches us, illumines our minds, and recalls Scripture for us to obey. Jesus told His disciples in John 16 that the Holy Spirit would “guide you into all the truth” (John 16:13), and that “He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all that I said to you” (John 14:26). This promise, originally given to the apostles, has a broader application in the Church Age, as the Spirit continues to illuminate God's Word for all believers (1 Cor 2:12-13). The Spirit of God uses the Word of God to shape and direct the child of God. He brings light to the text and light to the heart, enabling us not only to understand Scripture but to recall and apply it in real-time situations (cf. Psa 119:105). This is the backbone of spiritual growth—learning Bible doctrine, storing it in the heart, and then watching the Spirit activate that truth when it's most needed (John 17:17; 2 Tim 3:16-17). The Christian who walks by the Spirit is not passive but mentally engaged, saturated with Scripture, and spiritually responsive, willing to do God's will. As Christians learn and apply Scripture, they are wielding “the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God” (Eph 6:17). Walk by Faith After being born again by faith alone in Christ alone (Rom 3:28; Gal 2:16; Eph 2:8-9), we are to continue in faith. Paul wrote, “as you have received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in Him” (Col 2:6). We received Jesus by faith, and after being born again, we are to “walk by faith, not by sight” (2 Cor 5:7). The word “walk” translates the Greek verb peripateō (περιπατέω), which is here used as a metaphor for how we live, behave, or habitually conduct our lives. To walk by faith means we learn and apply God's Word to our lives (i.e., marriage, family, education, work, finances, etc.). It means obeying God's directives, claiming His promises, and utilizing His resources for our daily problems. We are also instructed to “walk by the Spirit” and not the flesh (Gal 5:16). When we live by faith and depend on the Spirit for strength and guidance, we “walk in a manner worthy of the calling” with which we have been called (Eph 4:1). As Christians, we are commanded to “walk by the Spirit” (Gal 5:16), which means walking in daily, moment by moment, dependance of the Spirit's guidance. This means learning God's Word and applying it by faith. The walk of faith and walking by the Spirit are not two different paths—they are one and the same. Both describe the Christian life lived in moment-by-moment dependence on God. Walking by faith means trusting in God's promises, character, and provisions even when circumstances seem contrary (2 Cor 5:7; Heb 10:38; 11:1, 6). Walking by the Spirit means yielding to the Spirit's guidance, relying on His power, and following His lead in obedience to the Word (Gal 5:16, 25). These are complementary perspectives on the same spiritual reality. The Spirit of God never leads contrary to the Word of God. And the life of faith is never disconnected from the Spirit's enablement. Just as we are justified by grace through faith (Rom 5:1), we are also sanctified by grace through faith—by walking in step with the Spirit (Gal 3:3). That means trusting Him to empower us to say “no” to the flesh and “yes” to righteousness (Rom 6:11-14; Gal 5:22-23). Faith is the channel, and the Spirit is the agent. When we walk by the Spirit, we walk by faith; and when we walk by faith, we're relying on the Spirit's power, not our own effort. In practical terms, walking by the Spirit through faith means living each day in confident trust that God's Word is true, God's Spirit is present, and God's grace is sufficient. We don't always feel spiritual—but we can always choose to trust. It's a mindset of humble dependence that says, “Lord, I believe Your Word, and I'm counting on You to work through me today.” Summary In summary, to be filled with the Spirit is to live the Christian life under divine influence—thinking God's thoughts, responding with His wisdom, and walking in His will. It is not an emotional high or mystical experience but a steady, faith-dependent surrender to the Spirit's guidance through the Word of God. The Spirit illumines, teaches, and recalls truth so that the believer can obey in real time. He empowers what Scripture commands and aligns our lives with God's desires. This filling is not about getting more of the Spirit but about the Spirit getting more of us—our thoughts, our attitudes, our choices. As we walk by faith, saturated with Scripture and yielded to His leading, the Spirit produces His fruit in and through us. This is the healthy Christian life: not self-powered but Spirit-enabled; not works-based but grace-driven. The filling of the Spirit is how we live out the righteousness we've received in Christ—it's the engine behind all true spiritual growth, and it happens one step of faith at a time. Steven R. Cook, D.Min., M.Div. [1] Lewis Sperry Chafer, The Ephesian Letter (New York: Loizeaux Brothers, 1935), 151. [2] The Greek word πίμπλημι (pimplēmi) communicates a similar idea. For example, in Luke 4:28, the people in the synagogue were “filled with rage” when Jesus exposed their unbelief. Similarly, Luke 5:26 describes a crowd that was “filled with fear” after witnessing a miracle, showing how awe and reverence seized their hearts. In Acts 13:45, the Jewish leaders “were filled with jealousy” upon seeing the crowds gather to hear Paul—they didn't just envy, they were controlled by envy, and it drove them to oppose the gospel.

In 1 Kings 17, God provides for Elijah in unexpected ways. This message encourages us to trust that when we walk by faith, God will always make a way to meet our needs.
Faith means moving forward even when we can't see the whole path. To walk by faith is to trust God's promises over our perceptions, believing He is guiding us even through uncertainty. This kind of walk requires surrender, confidence in His Word, and a willingness to follow Him step by step. This message will encourage us to live not by what we see, but by who we know God to be—faithful, present, and true.
