Víctor Palomo fue un deportista nato que destacó en múltiples disciplinas, entre ellas las motos. En 1976 ganó la Copa FIM o Campeonato de Europa de Fórmula 750, que era un verdadero Campeonato del Mundo “oficioso”… casi nadie se acuerda de Víctor Palomo… ¡nosotros sí! Con este video iniciamos una serie que hemos denominado “Grandes olvidados”. La idea se me ocurrió hablando con un aficionado joven que no sabía quién era Víctor Palomo. Y Víctor fue un pilotazo, el primero que demostró que los pilotos españoles eran capaces de ir rápido con motos pequeñas, pero también con motos grandes, nada menos que de 750 cm3. Además de Víctor Palomo, vamos a hacer vídeos de Santiago “Santi” Herreros, de “Champi” Herreros, de Salvador Cañellas -no todos los aficionados saben que fue el primer español en ganar un G.P. del Mundial-, del genial Antonio Cobas y de todos aquello que sugiráis, que seguro que serán unos cuantos. A Víctor Palomo, le podríamos llamar “el polideportivo” porque practicaba muchos deportes… pero todo lo hacía bien… El principio de esta historia es el 25 de mayo de 1949 en Barcelona. En la ciudad Condal y en esa fecha nace Víctor que desde muy joven se siente atraído por el deporte, sobre todo por los deportes acuáticos y en especial el esquí. Comienza a competir con 10 años y solo 4 años después se proclama Campeón de España. Un año más tarde es Campeón de Europa y con solo 21 años, Campeón del Mundo de slalom… Sus resultados le valieron la medalla de Plata al Mérito Deportivo… Vuelve a las motos, en las que había participado, tanto en motocross como en velocidad, durante su etapa en el esquí… Y este hombre, con unas dotes para la velocidad innatas y espectaculares, destaca rápidamente. En 1972 comienza a participar de forma privada en el Mundial de Velocidad, pero es que solo dos años después, en 1974, gana la carrera de la extinta categoría de 350 en el Gran Premio de España en Montjuïc. Parece que para Víctor, 350 cm3 eran pocos. Le gustaban más las motos “gordas” potentes y rápidas.He leído y oído muchas veces que la Fórmula 750 era algo así como las “Superbikes” de los 70. No estoy de acuerdo, serían más parecidas a las actuales MotoGP, pues en su mayoría eran prototipos no motos de calle preparadas. La cilindrada de 750 era muy popular en los USA, en especial en las míticas 200 Millas de Daytona y de ahí pasó a Europa. Desde 1973 se disputaba la “Fórmula 750” primero en el ámbito británico, luego en 1975 paso a ser Campeonato Europeo y en 1977 Campeonato Mundial, desplazando a las motos de 500 como categoría reina del Mundial. Ya sea como Fórmula 750, como Campeonato Europeo o como Campeonato Mundial, de esta excitante categoría, las motos más potentes y rápidas en su momento, se disputaron 7 temporadas. Los vencedores fueron pilotos de la categoría de Barry Sheene, John Dodds, Jack Findlay, Steve Baker, Johnny Cecotto y Patrick Pons, muchos de ellos, además, Campeones del Mundo en otras categorías. Claro, me falta uno, Víctor Palomo, que ganó un año antes de lo que debía, pues ganó en 1976, cuando era Campeonato, de Europa y en 1977 pasó a ser Campeonato del Mundo. Alguno dirá que, seguro que en 1977 hubo mejores pilotos, y no es así. Lo que sí es cierto es que este Campeonato no gustaba a todos los equipos y pilotos de los Campeonatos de velocidad tradicionales, por eso no corrían juntos y muchas veces ni en los mismos circuitos. Y no todos los pilotos seguían todo el campeonato. Pues no. Por solo citar un ejemplo Víctor Palomo, en la carrera de Assen de 1976 ganó a nada menos que Giacomo Agostini. Y es que Víctor Palomo era muy rápido… pero tuvo muchas lesiones… Y es que como buen piloto de motos “gordas”, Víctor era muy cotizado en las carreras de resistencia que se corrían con este tipo de motos. Y además era un gran conocedor del Circuito de Montjuïc, un circuito precioso, pero peligroso y traicionero. Allí, en la edición de 1979 tuvo un gravísimo accidente al chocar con una moto que iba más lenta… ¡y sin luces! La moto de Víctor se partió en dos y el casi pierde una pierna en el accidente. Repuesto de sus lesiones en 1982 volvió al Mundial, pero en la categoría de 500 donde a pesar de correr con un equipo modesto, tuvo actuaciones meritorias. Pero en el G.P. de Yugoslavia tuvo otro grave accidente en el que se partió la pelvis. Y abandonó la competición. En los años 80 en Ibiza si en verano ibas por el bar llamado Can Jurat, que aún hoy existe, podías encontrarte con Víctor Palomo con dos buenos amigos como era Barry Sheene y nuestro 12+1, Ángel Nieto, un verdadero amante y muy conocedor de la isla donde tenía una preciosa casa… Pero no tenía buena salud. Tenía una hepatitis de cierta gravedad que se le fue complicando. Y a los 36 años de edad falleció en Girona o en Gerona, como prefiráis. Muchos aficionados aún le recuerdan y su estilo, muy agresivo, de los primeros que hacía deslizar la moto de atrás, no lo vamos a olvidar.

The wonderful Thameside Radio wander mic comes into its own as the crew celebrate 6 months of untroubled broadcasting. Bob is in the garden with the Birdman making helpful contributions.
