Award-winning author and investigative journalist Alice Driver joins me to discuss her powerful new book, Life and Death of the American Worker. Her investigation exposes the deeply unethical practices within the meatpacking industry in the United States. For Alice, this story is personal. She grew up in Arkansas, one of the country's poorest states and home to Tyson Foods, the largest meatpacking plant in America. We delve into the harsh realities faced by the industry's workforce, many of whom are undocumented immigrants, with estimates suggesting that up to 30% of the labor force lacks legal status. Our conversation explores the severe health consequences these workers endure and the broader implications for workers' rights in America today. Newt’s guest is Vincent Vernuccio, president and co-founder of the Institute for the American Worker. They discuss the significant labor policy developments and legislative efforts aimed at increasing transparency and accountability in both public and private sectors. Their conversation covers the introduction of the Start Applying Labor Transparency (SALT) Act, which seeks to amend the Labor Management Reporting and Disclosure Act of 1959 to ensure greater transparency in financial transactions between unions and labor consultants. Vernuccio also explains the implications of President Trump's executive action, Schedule F, which aims to make certain federal employees at-will to enhance accountability. They also discuss the challenges posed by public sector unions and the potential impact of Senator Josh Hawley's Faster Labor Contracts Act, which could impose arbitration on private sector union negotiations. Vernuccio emphasizes the need for modernizing union models to align with today's workforce demands for flexibility and merit-based advancement.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Panicked Trump Tries To Con American Workers Into Supporting His Tariffs

Farron Balanced Daily

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 29, 2025 30:28

A very panicked Donald Trump tried to con American workers into supporting his tariffs by telling them a string of lies over the weekend. Trump got on Truth Social and claimed that the tariffs could possibly eliminate ALL income taxes on people making under $200,000 a year, something that's not even remotely possible. Trump's tariffs are barely pulling in more money than we were getting BEFORE the tariffs, nowhere near enough to eliminate income taxes on any income bracket.During an appearance on ABC this past weekend, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent offered an incredibly smug and insanely stupid defense of Donald Trump's chaotic trade war, claiming that the President is using "strategic uncertainty" to keep our trade partners off their game. Bessent says that this gives Trump an upper hand in negotiations, then completely failed to offer any examples of how and when this has worked. According to a new analysis, Elon Musk's DOGE office has already cost US taxpayers a staggering $135 billion while they claim they have saved $160 billion in federal spending, based on the totals from their "wall of receipts." But because we know that many of those "receipts" were either already spent or otherwise not accurate, it is safe to assume at this point that DOGE has cost taxpayers WAY MORE than they have saved.Trump appeared to call for physical violence against people who interrupt Republicans at their town hall events this past weekend in a post on Truth Social. Trump falsely claimed that Democrats are spending "a fortune" for these people to show up, in spite of a complete lack of evidence to suggest this is happening anywhere. He also said that Republicans need to have these people "ejected" from events, similar to how Marjorie Taylor Greene had people forcibly removed, tasered, and arrested at her recent event. This is little more than a clear call for violence against dissent.Donald Trump is paying close attention to the fact that his poll numbers are in the gutter, he just doesn't believe ANY of the pollsters are telling the truth. Even though every poll across the board has come up with similar results showing that he's grossly unpopular, Trump believes they are all faking it and demanded that they be investigated for "election fraud" in an early morning tirade on Truth Social on Monday.Text and and let us know your thoughts on today's stories!Subscribe to our YouTube channel to stay up to date on all of Farron's content: https://www.youtube.com/FarronBalancedFollow Farron on social media! On this week's show, we bring you the keynote address from the 2025 Legislative Summit and Annual Meeting of the Kentucky Conservation Committee (KCC) that was held at Kentucky State University in Frankfort on January 26th. This year's featured guest was Alice Driver, author of “Life and Death of the American Worker.” Winner of the J. Anthony Lukas Work-in-Progress Award, the book is an explosive exposé of the toxic labor practices at the largest meatpacking company in America and the immigrant workers who had the courage to fight back. During the 2024 Kentucky General Assembly, lawmakers passed Senate Bill 16 (https://apps.legislature.ky.gov/record/24rs/sb16.html), also known as an “Ag-Gag” bill, prohibiting the operation of recording devices at commercial food manufacturing and processing facilities. This kind of legislation favored large-scale farms such as Tyson, who had been in the process of opening a new $355 million production factory in Bowling Green during the 2024 legislative session. Ms. Driver's work exposes environmental and worker practices at Tyson foods in Arkansas. Watch a full replay and see Alice's powerful photos at http://vimeo.com/1051505067?share=copy Full details are at https://kyconservation.org/legislative-summit-2025 Truth to Power airs every Friday at 9pm, Saturday at 11am, and Sunday at 7pm on Louisville's grassroots, community radio station, Forward Radio 106.5fm WFMP and live streams at https://forwardradio.org

In this episode, we're talking about how America has real leadership again under Trump's administration, the importance of deporting illegal immigrants to restore law and order, and why we need to confirm RFK Jr. for the good of American health and wellbeing. We'll break down the policies that actually put America first, expose the chaos that's unfolded since, and discuss how we can push for real positive change for our country. We also need to focus on how we (desperately) need a separation of business and state.—https://noblegoldinvestments.com/invest/gold-ira/

After a recent online debate fired up on the Right, a new attention was brought to the HB-1 Visa program, which is used by American companies to recruit foreign workers to fill high-skill jobs, typically in technology. Some argue the program is good because it brings more skilled talent to the United States and others say it displaces or blocks opportunity for American workers and should be reformed or ended. Now, how are those membership fees effectively subsidized? Well, the U.S. taxpayer has “financial commitments” to the World Bank and the IMF numbering into the hundreds of billions, and American tax dollars (and debt) remain the top “contributor” to both institutions. Here's this, from a Congressional Research Service report released in May of this year:   And, from a CRS report released in 2022 on the IMF's financial structure: The United States contributes $117 billion to the IMF quota (17.46%). How close is the 2024 presidential election? Here is how the New York Times framed it recently: “Never in modern presidential campaigns have so many states been so tight this close to Election Day. Polling averages show that all seven battleground states are within the margin of error, meaning the difference between a half-point up and a half-point down — essentially a rounding error — could win or lose the White House.” A recent Times-Sienna poll has the race between Donald Trump and Kamala Harris deadlocked at 48 to 48. Other polls are similarly close — which does not mean they are all telling the same story. Today's guest, Kristen Soltis Anderson, writes that although “several of them show a dead heat, beneath the surface, they diverge in how they arrive at that result”. What stories can we glean from each poll? What theories of this election can we derive from those stories? Are the polls even right? And why, despite verbal gaffes and incendiary rallies and international conflict and general campaign turmoil, have the polling averages remained so steady in recent months? Kristen is a founding partner of Echelon Insights, an opinion research and analytics firm, and contributing Opinion writer to the New York Times, where she often writes about what is knowable and not knowable based on the polls. We talk about all these themes, including a theory of the election that Kristen came upon while watching football in Phoenix on a Sunday. Finally, we discuss a detailed survey of American workers that Echelon Insights, Kristen's firm, put into the field for the Economic Innovation Group — and its most surprising findings.
