Facility where animals are slaughtered for meat
POPULARITY
The meat industry say increased charges for Food Standards Agency staff such as abattoir vets and inspectors could threaten some operations. New charges come into force at the end of this month, and the hourly rate for some services will be more than 20% higher. The Food Standards Agency says a global vet shortage means it is having to pay more to recruit and retain them, and there are other inflationary pressures across the sector. We speak to the Association of Independent Meat Suppliers. Food producers, manufacturers, importers and exporters are all being asked to get prepared early for the new trading system under the EU/UK Trade Agreement, which is expected to come in next year. The new agreement will include a relaxation of the food biosecurity paperwork, known as SPS or Sanitary and Phytosanitary rules. The International Chambers of Commerce say this is good news. And trade disruption caused by the war in the Middle East has pushed oil and fertiliser prices up. Farmers here are worried there could be shortages of imported fertiliser. With this in mind, some farmers are looking at ways of mitigating the situation. David Morgan keeps a large herd of beef cattle at Peterchurch in Herefordshire's Golden Valley. He's invested in slurry separating equipment to help produce better home grown fertiliser.Presenter = Anna Hill Producer = Rebecca Rooney

In this episode of the Girls in Property podcast, I am joined by Alex Fidoe for one of those conversations that really makes you stop and think about what is possible when you refuse to give up.Alex shares her journey from working in a corporate role to becoming a self taught property developer, and we dive deep into one of her boldest projects yet converting an old abattoir into something completely new. This is not a glossy overnight success story. We talk honestly about the planning battles, the knock backs, the moments where it would have been easier to walk away, and the sheer belief Alex had to hold onto when others said no.This episode is a powerful reminder that property is not just about houses. It is about vision, resilience, and being willing to look outside the box. If you have ever thought about commercial property, scaling up, or taking on something that feels a bit scary but exciting at the same time, this conversation will really land.We also talk about the importance of community, surrounding yourself with the right people, and why backing yourself matters more than having all the answers from the start.Alex's story is proof that you do not need permission to dream bigger, and that sometimes the most unexpected spaces can turn into the most incredible opportunities. This episode is for you if you are ready to challenge what you think property looks like and start believing that you can do things your own way too.How to Get Involved With The Girls in Property

The enclave known as Butcher Town flourished around Cannon's millpond until 1850, when the expansion of Charleston's city limits propelled the slaughtering business northward. The migration of butchers' pens across the Neck then triggered a decades-long battle between private enterprise and public efforts to regulate the industry. Following a suite of political and technological developments in the early twentieth century, a modern municipal abattoir ultimately scrubbed the ancient blood-soaked industry from the local landscape.

A Scottish abattoir has closed with the loss of 90 jobs. Scotbeef at Inverurie has been shut. The company says an operational review concluded it was necessary to protect the long-term future of the business amid industry challenges. Earlier this year the number of cattle in Scotland fell to its lowest for a decade and farming groups called for government support to rebuild the national herd, warning that some abattoirs might close because they'd become uneconomic. All this week, we'll be talking about seaweed. At the Holkham estate in north Norfolk, a trial funded by the WWF and the Co-op foundation has been trying to prove that the use of seaweed based biostimulant can reduce the need for artificial nitrogen fertiliser, without affecting yields. If successful it could present a way for farms to reduce costs, and minimise the negative side effects of overusing fertilisers. The cost of rural crime has fallen. New figures from the insurers NFU Mutual show a 16.5% fall last year - the costs are put at £44 million in comparison with £53 million the year before. The biggest fall is in the theft of agricultural vehicles, and the number of animals killed or injured in dog attacks was also down, by a quarter, but livestock theft remained high. Filmmaker and MOVIE CRYPT favorite Darren Lynn Bousman (SAW 2-4, SPIRAL, ABATTOIR, REPO! THE GENETIC OPERA) returns to share yet another set of incredible stories from his various cinematic adventures over the last few years. As always, Bousman brings his unmatched level of candid honesty about his trials and tribulations and the humble perspective that has made him an absolute legend on this podcast. Starting off with the story of his film THE CELLO and how one of the greatest production experiences of his career suddenly turned south… to the making of his upcoming feature (tentatively titled THE MONSTER) and working with Dijon Hounsou (AMISTAD) and Lauren LaVera (TERRIFIER 2 & 3)… to the MUST HEAR second hour about how the three directors each wrestle with feeling responsible for anything that goes wrong on a production even when it was completely out of their hands… to how they deal with the disappointment of working on a project for years only to have it snuffed out in an instant… to how anxiety and depression have made them think they never wanted to make another film again and just what price “suffering for your art” can actually cost you over the long haul… this is yet another one of those conversations we only wish they would present students with in film school. It may only be March when this episode premieres but it is already a contender for best episode of the year. Don't miss it! In this episode, we delve into South Africa's Meat Safety Act of 2000 - a vital piece of legislation designed to regulate meat production, processing, and distribution, ensuring public health and safety. Jeremiah Jothams, an experienced abattoir owner and meat inspector, unpacks its role in upholding food safety standards, protecting consumers, and promoting sustainable practices within the livestock sector. He also explores how the Act affects farmers, abattoirs, and retailers, highlighting the consequences of non-compliance. Whether you're a farmer or a conscious consumer, this episode offers valuable insights into the importance of meat safety for everyone.
As England is now the one part of the UK allowed to grow gene edited crops, what does that mean for trade with partners like the EU? We discuss the latest promises on legislation with Northern Ireland's Minister of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs...and a farmer who's growing precision bred crops.Twenty years ago the idea of robotic milking for cows may have seemed far-fetched, but today it's not uncommon, with an estimated 10% of UK dairy farms using automated systems. Plans to get abattoirs to take on more of the cost of vets and meat inspectors are "excessive and dangerous" according to the meat industry. The Association of Independent Meat Suppliers, (AIMS) which represents both big and small slaughterhouses, says the Food Standards Agency's proposal to remove or reduce the discount offered to smaller abattoirs risks "single handedly destroying the foundations of the British meat industry".' The FSA, which covers England, Northern Ireland and Wales, has issued a "call for evidence" on the proposed changes, saying that the costs of providing inspectors and official vets have increased and that needs to be passed onto businesses. All week we're going to look at water management. After a year that has seen storms and vast amounts of flooding, how we respond to weather events in future as the climate changes is a hot topic. We speak to one of the scientists leading a new, government funded research project. Using cutting edge technology the new Flood and Drought Research Infrastructure will measure flooding and droughts to create models that will allow us to predict them, and to find out how we might be able to reduce their impact in the future.
