Jon Butt was last on the show in episode 73, when he came on to talk about his multi-million pound B2B eCommerce business Fire Protection Online. The business Jon's here to talk about today couldn't be more different. It's B2C, a much lower AOV, it's a food product, and it's a subscription business! In 2017 Jon and his son Harvey launched Blue Coffee Box, a ground coffee discovery box. As we record they're just starting month 4, and are on the cusp of their 100th subscriber. I'm really pleased to have a “traditional ecommerce” veteran on to discuss why subscription. I know a lot of you out there are thinking of adding it into the mix – so I just had to include it in this January Growth Series. In this episode of Business Systems Explored, we speak to Jon Butt, the CEO of Fire Protection Online, and content marketer at MarketingForOwners.com . Jon breaks down how he built an online store that generates $3m in annual revenue.
Jon Butt is not an easy business person to categorize! Without question, he’s a successful serial entrepreneur, first and foremost. But he’s also a marketing guru, an educator, and a podcaster. Jon started his first business from scratch the old-fashioned way: by cold-calling door-to-door selling fire extinguishers. Ultimately, he sold that business to global fire protection giant, Kidde plc, for seven figures! Numerous other businesses followed, when Jon moved into internet marketing and cut his teeth selling products as diverse as treadmills, colored contact lenses and PDAs. (Remember those?) Jon’s next move was to build another fire safety company from scratch using ecommerce but, this time, with no sales staff. Using his simple, proprietary online marketing system Jon has managed to generate around $20 million in sales so far and his company is the UK's largest online fire safety provider. To further prove the system can work for any business, Jon began a nationwide fire extinguisher maintenance division that generated over $100,000 in its first year; all while he spent every other month in Vancouver, Canada, and no longer had a desk or office in his own company. Jon's aim is to remove the stress of increasing sales income from the daily grind of business. To this end, he teaches everything an owner needs to know to generate sales and leads on autopilot at MarketingForOwners.com and on his daily Marketing For Owners Podcast.

Today I'm joined by someone who sold his business for 7 figures back in 2003 and then retired. And then got bored. So he started an e-commerce business, and that’s now generated over 20 million dollars in sales to-date. Welcome to DMR, Jon Butt (@MarketingOwners). [You can find Jon over at MarketingForOwners.com.] https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rSMwtWb_czo On this episode of Digital Marketing Radio we discuss creating customers on autopilot, with topics including: You registered FireProtectionOnline.co.uk back in 2006 - how significant to your success is the fact that you were previously involved in that industry? Michael Gerber says “work on the business not in the business” & that’s what you also seem to apply to what you do. When you started off were you very hands on in every marketing activity? What marketing activity should a business try to automate first? What marketing activity shouldn’t a business owner automate? How has automation technology changed over the past few years? Can any business create customers on autopilot? What are the biggest mistakes you see when a business starts to automate customer acquisition process? [Tweet ""Spend 20% of your time building a business. 80% of your time marketing." @MarketingOwners"] Software I couldn't live without What software do you currently use in your business that if someone took away from you, it would significantly impact your marketing success? Process Street [Process and Workflow management] What software don't you use, but you've heard good things about, and you've intended to try at some point in the near future? Hubspot [Marketing automation] My number 1 takeaway What's the single most important step from our discussion that our listeners need to take away and implement in their businesses? Everybody spends too much time and too much energy getting over-involved in the business. All businesses are the same. they have production, marketing and finance. That's pretty much it. Businesses just run on the same framework. You need to make sure that you have marketing nailed down - and all you need to do is follow an existing proven system. there are plenty out there, plenty out there for free. Just look at YouTube, plenty of stuff. 20% of your time building a business. 80% of your time marketing. If you are building a busienss, this is not a short-term thing. Slow and steady wins the race.
Jon Butt has seen a lot related to marketing and business growth. In fact, he has been in the business more than 30 years and has seen almost everything! In the end, for Jon, marketing success comes down to 6 P’s. Presence, Potential, Permission, Purchase, Preacher and Perpetuate. He believes in educating and providing high value content to your audience in order to build trust. This trust then turns into loyal customers and raving fans. This interview is a great primer on all things marketing. If you are looking for an instant-fix, it probably won’t help, but if you want to improve your marketing and sales, you’ll definitely enjoy this episode.
