In this episode of the Epigenetics Podcast, we talked with Kunal Rai from MD Anderson Cancer Center about his work on active DNA demethylation and its role in cancer progression. A major part of the conversation covers his postdoctoral work on active DNA demethylation. He describes how he identified an AID-MBD4-based mechanism, later supported by GAD45, and how this work showed a role for DNA demethylation in early neuronal differentiation and in colon cancer initiation. We then discuss his move into his own lab and his work on melanoma progression. He explains how he used broad epigenomic profiling, chromatin state analysis, and 3D chromatin methods to study enhancers and chromatin organization, and how these approaches helped reveal changes linked to cancer progression. Another topic is his work on epigenetic regulators such as RNF2 and KMT2D. He describes findings on polycomb and trithorax-related factors, including tumor-suppressive roles for KMT2D in melanoma and lung cancer, and how KMT2D loss affects cell phenotype and metabolism. Finally, we talk about lab organization, collaboration, and newer technologies. He says his group works across multiple cancer types and increasingly includes immunology, single-cell methods, spatial epigenomics, and clinical translation, while still using ChIP-seq, CUT&RUN, and CUT&Tag where appropriate. Canadian military chaplains prohibited from mentioning God in public Military chaplains in Canada can no longer mention God at public events. The country's government issued the new policy last month. Canada already prohibited chaplains from praying at public events. The Canadian Armed Forces claims to be maintaining religious and spiritual neutrality in the exercise of its public duties. But in Matthew 12:30, Jesus said, “He who is not with Me is against Me, and he who does not gather with Me scatters abroad.” Trump pauses 50% tariffs on Canadian goods U.S. President Donald Trump paused 50 percent tariffs on Canadian goods yesterday. The tariffs were set to go into effect today. The president said that the two countries had reached a deal, subject to the finalization of the documents.  Trump picked a pro-lifer to head the FDA President Donald Trump nominated Dr. Heidi Overton to lead the Food and Drug Administration yesterday. She previously served as a White House health policy adviser. Dr. Overton is an opponent of abortion. She has written about the dangerous rise of chemical abortion which was allowed by the FDA in previous years. Christian Forest Service officer no longer required to work on Sundays A U.S. Forest Service officer will no longer be required to work on Sundays. Adam Diemert is a Forest Service law enforcement officer in Glenwood Springs, Colorado. He is also a devout Presbyterian who attends church twice every Sunday. Adam submitted multiple religious accommodation requests to not work on Sundays. Sadly, the Forest Service denied those requests. But thanks to the legal help of First Liberty Institute, Adam finally received the accommodation last week.  Socialist Democrats score another primary victory Socialist Democrats picked up another primary victory on Tuesday. Socialist Angie Nixon defeated retired Army Lt. Col. Alex Vindman, in Florida's Democrat primary race for the U.S. Senate.  Listen to the opening line of her victory speech. The company announced yesterday, “Prime Air offers millions of items by drone at everyday low prices, in as fast as 30 minutes.” The service currently operates in just 11 U.S. locations.  President Trump meets heroic lifeguard who saved 10-year-old And finally, President Donald Trump recently met with a heroic lifeguard as well as the 10-year-old boy he rescued. Sixteen-year-old Ryder Williams saved Nathaniel Rai from a rip current at a beach in Santa Cruz, California last month. A video of the rescue went viral, getting the president's attention. When asked by a reporter what went through his mind, the lifeguard said this. WILLIAMS: “In those dangerous moments that we have, we always try to fall back on our training. We are trained so well, by many, to handle that situation as best we can. So, I really am just thinking about how to get the boy out of the water as fast as I can.” He was also asked about his plans for the future. WILLIAMS: “I want to be a firefighter in the future. Hopefully, go through paramedic school.” Williams and Rai got to visit the White House on Monday. President Trump commended Williams and emphasized the providential moment. In questo clima un agente immobiliare viene trovato ucciso dentro un condominio di San Lorenzo, quartiere storico di Roma. Le poche testimonianze parlano di lite furibonda, probabilmente una morte violenta dovuta a motivi razziali. Un bianco ucciso da un gruppo di neri. Maraschino, inviato del giornale “La Civetta”, si ritrova a seguire il classico caso che sembra fatto apposta per riempire le pagine dei giornali con polemiche da ombrellone: immigrati sì, immigrati no, integrazione o espulsione. Nel condominio di San Lorenzo strutturato come un ascensore sociale (ma senza ascensore) abitano bangladini, anziani, coppie di italiani, senegalesi, studenti, impiegati e una clus. Ognuno con una sua storia, ognuno con umori, dolori differenti e inconciliabili, così lontani eppure così tanto legati da essere uniti da un filo rosso di qualcosa di molto peggio: sangue. Maraschino prende appunti, beve caffè, vola col motorino impresentabile da un capo all'altro della città, indaga tra le pieghe umane di una realtà ben più complessa delle apparenze. Si impegna nel lavoro a modo suo non rinunciando alla sua piccola e frammentata vita privata che ruota intorno alla gatta Ollie e alla proto fidanzata Veronica con la quale cerca di non cadere nel baratro di quello che lui stesso definisce “coppiettismo”. La storia avanza attraverso un caleidoscopio di verità concatenate e sorprendenti colte da Maraschino e dalla sua giovane collega Elettra Rossi che per seguire la pista dell'inchiesta, si sposta persino a Salonicco in Grecia.
