In this week's episode, we embark on a powerful conversation with Jon Salmon, a social impact consultant and mental health campaigner, who has dedicated his life to breaking down barriers in mental health and inspiring hope. Jon's story takes us from London's winter challenges to the sunny shores of Cape Town, where he finds moments of peace and connection with family. He opens up about the challenges of supporting mental health amidst public funding cuts and shares how movements like Heads Together and Red January bring people together to tackle stigma and create real change. Here's what's in the episode:• Why Cape Town has become Jon's place of renewal and connection. • His journey as a mental health advocate and the personal struggles that sparked his mission. • How the Red January movement transformed his perspective on the “January blues.” • Inspiring stories from organisations like Let's Talk About Loss that bring support and community to those grieving.

[TW// references to suicide] Jon Salmon is an award-winning executive producer, digital pioneer and mental health campaigner. Jon was asked to speak alongside the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and Prince Harry at the launch of the Heads Together mental health campaign. Jon lost his father to suicide as a teenager and soon after he was sectioned and admitted to hospital suffering stress and depression. Unlike his Dad, Jon was able to get the right help and support yet Jon decided not to tell anyone for nearly 20 years that he had suffered with his mental health due to the fear of judgement & rejection. Jon shares what he has learnt on his incredible journey and is an inspiration to anyone struggling with their mental health and perhaps feels gagged to speak out and share their true feelings because of the stigma that still persists. Jon has so many tools on how to confront & tackle your own struggles and how to keep your mental health strong to secure a happy and ever growing life. More on Jon - Jon is the co-founder of digital agency Byte Entertainment, Co-CEO of lived experience social enterprise Speakers Collective, co-producer of What's Going On In Your Head? immersive events and a trustee for Let's Talk About Loss charity supporting young people who have been bereaved. The Proper Mental Podcast

Welcome to Proper Mental episode 78 with Jon Salmon, a mental health campaigner who's working to make the world a more understanding and empathic place for anyone experiencing mental illness. He has worked for Time to Change and Heads Together, he is a director of Speakers Collective, a trustee for Let's Talk About Loss and the co-founder of Byte Entertainment. Jon lost his father to suicide as a teenager and the repercussions of this would eventually lead Jon to having his own struggles with depression and in 1999, he was sectioned and admitted to hospital. Due to the stigma around mental illness, Jon decided not to tell anyone about his experiences for nearly 20 years. Jon was inspired to speak up after the suicide of a close friend and he has been campaigning and advocating for all aspects of mental health awareness ever since. Jon and I caught up to chat about his journey and the incredible work he's done over the years.  We talk awareness, stigma, suicide and loss and it was wonderful to chat all about mental health with one of the most well-respected advocates in the game! This episode is particularly close to my heart, not only because Jon Salmon has been a dear friend for so many years, but because we discuss the powerful and complex subject of mental health and suicide. Jon and I both experienced the loss through suicide of a special person in our lives in 2016, afterwich he began to work with mental health charities to assist others. He has worked alongside the Duke and Dutchess of Cambridge (William and Kate) and Prince Harry to reinforce the importance of mental health awareness. In this episode we discuss: - Jon shares his own struggles with mental health from around 20 years ago, and how the suicide of our mutual friend triggered him into action. - How powerful the word suicide is, and how difficult it is to talk about. Is it better to talk about it even if we worry we'll say the wrong thing? - The mystery of mental illness. It can be hard to pinpoint the cause. - How might we be able to address mental health challenges from an energetic viewpoint? - The importance of self check ins. hubofhope.co.uk https://www.bestbeginnings.org.uk/ https://www.time-to-change.org.uk/ https://www.crisistextline.org/ US/Canada: Text HOME 741741 to be in touch with trained crisis volunteer https://giveusashout.org/ UK: Text SHOUT 85258 to be in touch with trained crisis volunteer
