In this episode we head back to the Anglo Saxon Age with Edoardo Albert to meet the 'Father of English History' – the Venerable Bede. Bede is a beguiling character. He lived just a few generations after the arrival of Christianity in Britain in remote Northumbria, a place that Pope Gregory regarded as being on the very edge of the known world. But from these outer limits, Bede redefined the world in which he lived. 'It has ever been my delight', he wrote, 'to learn and teach and write'. Throughout his life he produced a steady stream of books on subjects from history to natural philosophy. Edoardo Albert takes us back to see Bede at the peak of his powers, in the monastery at Jarrow in the year 716. This, as Albert explains, was a pivotal year for Bede as the quiet world in which he lived was disturbed by the departure of a beloved elder. Find out more about Edoardo Albert's Bede: The Man Who Invented England. Show Notes Scene One: 4 June 716. A walk around St Paul's Monastery at Jarrow. Scene Two: 4 June 716. Friends of the Rosary,Today, the Feast day of St. Norbert, Bishop, Saturday of the Ninth Week in Ordinary Time, and the eve of the Solemnity of the Corpus Christi, we see in the Gospel (Mark 12:38-44), the contrast between the religious show and the hidden, total self-gift of the poor widow who gives everything by love.“Amen, I say to you, this poor widow put in morethan all the other contributors to the treasury. For they have all contributed from their surplus wealth, but she, from her poverty, has contributed all she had,her whole livelihood.”St. Ambrose said, "No one gives more than she who has left nothing for herself."St. John Chrysostom, "Almsgiving is that of the Widow who emptied out all her living."St. Bede, "God does not weigh the property but the conscience of those who offer."Ave Maria!Come, Holy Spirit, come!To Jesus through Mary! Here I am, Lord; I come to do your will. Please give us the grace to respond with joy!+ Mikel Amigot w/ María Blanca | RosaryNetwork.com, New YorkEnhance your faith with the new Holy Rosary University app:Apple iOS | New! Dave took another trip to the emergency room this week — though this one wasn't for him. His daughter Bernadette and one of his boys built a foam block bridge, she went off the side of it, landed on the wall, and broke her clavicle. Clean break. When Adam got the x-ray, he zoomed in, screenshotted just the broken collarbone, and sent it to Lady Haylee with no context — let her think Adam had been out grinding, building fences, shouldering it like a tough guy. Bernadette, for the record, is doing great. Three weeks and she's back to normal. As Dave put it, if you're going to break your clavicle, do it young. Don't do it at Jim's age.A lot of life packed into this one before the topic. Adam and his boys, Luke and Jude, are going to read the Aeneid together this summer — Luke already read it at Holy Family Classical School, so he'll lead the way. Adam helped Dave harvest wheat (the invoice is coming), and the two of them talked homesteading honestly: you don't get into it to save time or money. It's a lifestyle, and the pork chop costs $400 if you're foolish enough to count your own labor. Adam also turned 40 — by the time this airs, the birthday's passed — and he spent his Substack this week reflecting on the four ten-year cycles he's got left, if he's lucky. The big lesson from 30 to 40: he had it backwards. He was making his life serve the business instead of the business serve his life. Build the habits of prayer, reading, and friendship young, because life only gets busier, and it's far easier to keep a habit than to add one.Two prayer requests worth holding. Lady Pamela's due date is this week — baby Niles number seven, two middle names this time, names not yet shared. And baby Mary is still in the NICU. They're going to try again this week to take her off the breathing tube. She's weaning off sedation — which means withdrawals, which is hard — but she's gaining weight and getting stronger. Get past the tube and the next hill is open heart surgery. Adam's grateful for every prayer, and for the guys who sent DoorDash cards. Keep praying for Mary. And a shout-out to Dan O'Brien, David's father-in-law, walking the Camino as this drops — Dan, hope the feet are holding up.This week's pour is a funny one: WhistlePig's 250th Anniversary of America 10-Year "Piggy Bank" Limited Edition Straight Rye, 55% ABV. The box is a literal piggy bank and the bottle is a chrome-plated ceramic pig. Spicier and more herbal than your Weller or Buffalo Trace — but smooth for the proof, with caramel and warm undertones. Picked up at Broken Arrow Wine and Spirits, owned by a good Catholic family from St. Benedict. Jim's yummy scale (bourbon scale): 5.87 out of 6.Then the main course: the Finding of Jesus in the Temple. Luke 2, the last joyful mystery, the only Gospel that records it — and the very first time Jesus is recorded speaking. Adam walks through it with the Catena Aurea, Aquinas's compilation of the Church Fathers edited by St. John Henry Newman. The caravan to Jerusalem split women and children up front, men in the back, and a twelve-year-old could be in either — so Mary thought He was with Joseph, Joseph thought He was with Mary. Theophylact says it wasn't negligence. A logistical blind spot. Any father who's left a kid at church after coffee and donuts gets it.The three days they searched? St. Ambrose says that's no accident — a rehearsal for the three days of the Passion, lost and then found again. The age of twelve is no accident either: right before the bar mitzvah, the Lord fulfilling the law perfectly, right on time, and twelve standing for the tribes and the apostles. Watch Mary, too. She brings her grief straight to her Son without accusation — "why have you done this to us?" — modeling how a soul carries pain to Christ: honestly, blaming no one, trusting before she fully understands. Watch Joseph, who says nothing, and pursues his mission relentlessly without drama. That's the masculine answer to adversity: very well, and you handle it. Protect, provide, establish. Was Jesus being disobedient? The Fathers say no — His higher obedience to His Father's business ran underneath the surface, and verse 51 shows Him going home and being subject to them. God first, then family, and that order doesn't fracture the home. It grounds it. And where did they find Him? In the temple. His Father's house. Which is the whole point: you can find Jesus in nature, in the car, anywhere — but you are guaranteed to find Him in the church, body, blood, soul, and divinity, in the tabernacle of every Catholic church in the world. If you want to become holy, go be with Him. Get an adoration hour. Holiness doesn't happen the way Adam's buddy Juan figured he'd "just kind of one day have a six pack." You have to do something about it. Raise your glass.TOPICS COVEREDDave's daughter Bernadette breaking her clavicle falling off a foam block bridge the kids builtAdam screenshotting the x-ray and sending just the broken collarbone to Lady Haylee with no contextAdam reading the Aeneid with his sons Luke and Jude this summer — and why he's doing it men's-group styleHarvesting wheat, and the honest economics of homesteading ("the $400 pork chop")Why you never homestead to save time or money — it's a lifestyle, not a shortcutAdam turning 40 and his Substack reflection on the four ten-year cycles he has leftThe biggest lesson from 30 to 40 — making the business serve your life instead of your life serving the businessWhy habits of prayer, reading, and friendship are easier to keep than to add laterLeveraging competent friends instead of trying to do everything yourselfLady Pamela due this week with baby Niles number seven — and the two-middle-names debateBaby Mary update — another attempt to come off the breathing tube, weaning off sedation, gaining weightWhy open heart surgery is the next hill after the breathing tubeDan O'Brien walking the Camino — a shout-out for sore feetBourbon of the week: WhistlePig 250th Anniversary 10-Year "Piggy Bank" Limited Edition Straight Rye, 55% ABVThe ceramic pig bottle, the piggy-bank box, and why a limited shelf whiskey runs $250–$350Jim's yummy scale hitting 5.87 out of 6 on the bourbon scaleThe Finding of Jesus in the Temple — Luke 2, the last joyful mystery, and the only Gospel that records itThe first recorded words of Our LordReading the story through the Catena Aurea — Aquinas's compilation of the Fathers, edited by St. John Henry NewmanHow the Passover caravan split women and children up front and men in the back — and how Jesus fell into the gapTheophylact on why it was a logistical blind spot, not negligence or bad parentingSt. Ambrose on the three-day search foreshadowing the three days of the Passion and ResurrectionWhy the age of twelve matters — the year before the bar mitzvah, and the symbolism of the twelve tribes and apostlesJesus fulfilling the law perfectly and right on time, not jumping aheadMary bringing her grief to Christ without accusation — the model for carrying pain to the Lord"About my father's business" vs. "in my father's house" — the translation and what it meansSt. Bede on faith preceding comprehension — assenting before fully understandingSt. Joseph as the model father — pursuing his mission relentlessly, without drama or self-pityMary honoring Joseph's fatherhood — "your father and I" — and why spouses don't belittle each otherHow complaining about your spouse to others actually breaks your wedding vowsWas Jesus disobedient? Full Text of Readings Memorial of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of the Church Lectionary: 572A The Saint of the day is Saint Bede the Venerable Saint Bede the Venerable's Story Bede the Venerable is one of the few saints honored as such even during his lifetime. His writings were filled with such faith and learning that even while he was still alive, a Church council ordered them to be read publicly in the churches. At an early age, Bede was entrusted to the care of the abbot of the Monastery of St. Paul, Jarrow. The happy combination of genius and the instruction of scholarly, saintly monks, produced a saint and an extraordinary scholar, perhaps the most outstanding one of his day. He was deeply versed in all the sciences of his times: natural philosophy, the philosophical principles of Aristotle, astronomy, arithmetic, grammar, ecclesiastical history, the lives of the saints and especially, holy Scripture. From the time of his ordination to the priesthood at 30—he had been ordained a deacon at 19—till his death, Bede the Venerable was ever occupied with learning, writing, and teaching. Besides the many books that he copied, he composed 45 of his own, including 30 commentaries on books of the Bible. His Ecclesiastical History of the English People is commonly regarded as of decisive importance in the art and science of writing history. A unique era was coming to an end at the time of Bede's death: It had fulfilled its purpose of preparing Western Christianity to assimilate the non-Roman barbarian North. Bede recognized the opening to a new day in the life of the Church even as it was happening. Although eagerly sought by kings and other notables, even Pope Sergius, Bede the Venerable managed to remain in his own monastery until his death. Only once did he leave for a few months in order to teach in the school of the archbishop of York. Bede died in 735 praying his favorite prayer: “Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit. As in the beginning, so now, and forever.” Reflection Though his History is the greatest legacy Bede the Venerable has left us, his work in all the sciences, especially in Scripture, should not be overlooked. During his last Lent, Bede worked on a translation of the Gospel of Saint John into English, completing it the day he died. But of this work “to break the word to the poor and unlearned” nothing remains today.Saint of the Day, Copyright Franciscan Media

Steve McAllister welcomed back a couple of chief executive officers to a new episode of the Gaming News Canada Show presented by Bede Gaming: PointsBet Canada boss Scotty Vanderwel and Bede head honcho Colin Cole-Johnson. The reason for the joint appearance? PointsBet and Bede last month announced collaboration on a new casino aggregation and bonusing platform provided by Bede to the Ontario-licensed operator. Vanderwel discussed the decision to bring Bede on board to power its new proprietary platform, which gives PointsBet access to an extensive online casino catalogue that includes Games Global, Pragmatic Play, Play'n GO, Light & Wonder, and other games suppliers. Cole-Johnson talked about the company's experience in the Ontario marketplace through its long-time partnership with OLG, and the collaboration process between the two companies' teams to create and launch the new platform. McAllister asked both leaders about the growth of igaming in Ontario's regulated gambling industry, the player protection piece of the platform and the importance of both companies' culture during the building process. Vanderwel and Cole-Johnson both addressed the opportunity around the incoming open market in Alberta and the need to create a unique product for customers in the western Canada province. The history of medieval Britain through twelve remarkable illuminated manuscripts. Illumino: A History of Medieval Britain in Twelve Illuminated Manuscripts (Reaktion, 2025) explores the history of medieval Britain through the biographies of twelve remarkable illuminated manuscripts and of their creators and owners. The manuscripts each serve as portals into these lives and as springboards into the era of their production. For illuminated manuscripts are among the most intricate and fascinating forms of evidence for the Middle Ages, blending the fruits of human intellect – the arts, the sciences, politics, philosophy and faith – with the materiality of their production. By undertaking the detective work needed to determine the nature of each project and the underlying human-interest stories, this book reveals their manifold social, economic and cultural contexts and charts the exchange of ideas, techniques and materials over time and space. Featuring more than a hundred beautiful illustrations, this is a unique and accessible introduction to Britain's history, art history and book history across a thousand years. Michelle P. Brown is Professor Emerita of Medieval Manuscript Studies at the School of Advanced Study, University of London, and was formerly Curator of Illuminated Manuscripts at the British Library. Her books include Bede and the Theory of Everything (Reaktion, 2023). Morteza Hajizadeh is a Ph.D. graduate in English from the University of Auckland in New Zealand. His research interests are Cultural Studies; Critical Theory; Environmental History; Medieval (Intellectual) History; Gothic Studies; 18th and 19th Century British Literature. In this Software Deep Dive episode, we talk with Dr. Bede Constantinides (University of Birmingham) about Deacon, a tool for removing host DNA reads from metagenomic datasets. We discuss why host read removal is a deceptively difficult problem, the limitations of alignment-based approaches, and how Deacon evolved from Bede's earlier tool Hostile. The conversation covers practical issues such as human contamination in metagenomes, balancing sensitivity vs specificity when filtering reads, and the computational challenges of working with large human reference datasets and pangenomes. This episode focuses on the background and motivation for Deacon. The next episode will dive deeper into how the method works. Send a textBoot Hill gets talked about like a legend, but legends get lazy. We wanted the names, the dates, and the ugly little details that show how Dodge City earned its reputation before the “classic” era of Wyatt Earp and Bat Masterson even settles in.We walk through the earliest Boot Hill burials starting in 1872, when the railroad, soldiers from Fort Dodge, gamblers, buffalo hunters, and nonstop drinking turn a new town into a combustible mix. Stories like Jack Reynolds, the man remembered as Blackjack or Tex, the killing of hotel owner Carpenter J. M. Essington, and the violence in Tom Sherman's dance hall make it clear that these were not neat Western showdowns. They were crowded, impulsive, and often senseless. Then the episode turns to vigilante justice, the executions of Ed Williams and Charles “Texas” Hill, and the return of McGill, a buffalo hunter whose behavior becomes infamous. The real pivot point comes with the murder of William Taylor, a Black man and the private cook for Colonel Richard Dodge, and the military response that follows. That single killing helps push Dodge City toward formal law enforcement, the election of Sheriff Charlie Bassett, and a clearer divide in how ordinances are enforced north and south of the tracks. If you're into Dodge City history, Boot Hill history, or the truth behind Wild West myths, this is the ground-level story of how reputation is made and why a town eventually tries to bury it. Subscribe, share with a fellow Western history fan, and leave a review with the one Boot Hill story you think more people should know.Gretel le Maître Ponders Beauty, with Bede & other guestsGretel le Maître likes to look for the beauty and curiosities in life, one day at a...Listen on: Apple Podcasts SpotifySupport the showIf you'd like to buy one or more of our fully illustrated dime novel publications, you can click the link I've included.

In this captivating episode, we welcome Doug Hajicek, a pioneering wildlife researcher, inventor, television producer, and host of Untold Radio AM. With a career spanning more than 35 years, Doug is best known as the creator and producer of the acclaimed History Channel series MonsterQuest, where he applied rigorous scientific methods to investigate reports of cryptids and mysterious creatures around the world. His groundbreaking innovations include developing advanced camera systems that captured the first documented footage of a free-swimming giant squid—estimated at over 50 feet long—in its natural deep-sea habitat in the Sea of Cortez. He also directed and produced the influential documentary Sasquatch: Legend Meets Science, which examined Bigfoot evidence through expert forensic analysis of footprints, hair samples, and the famed Patterson-Gimlin film.Beyond his professional achievements, Doug shares rare and deeply personal accounts of his own encounters with the unexplained. He recounts multiple firsthand Bigfoot sightings during decades of fieldwork, the exhilaration and technical challenges of filming that historic giant squid, and a chilling face-to-face encounter with a winged humanoid strikingly similar to classic Mothman descriptions—and eerily reminiscent of the creature in Jeepers Creepers. He also opens up about a night of intense, unexplained phenomena in his own home, including strange lights, unaccountable sounds and disturbances, and other events that challenged his understanding of reality."It started from a pee."Got a mind-blowing paranormal encounter, cryptid sighting, UFO experience, or any high-strangeness story that still gives you chills? Send a textA nuked world shouldn't feel this alive. We dive headfirst into Fallout Season 2 and unpack how it turns deep-cut lore into gripping television without leaving newcomers behind. From NCR and Caesar's Legion to the fractured Brotherhood of Steel and Mr. House's clockwork vision, we trace the power plays that make New Vegas more than a backdrop—it's a living argument about who gets to decide the future. What hooked us most is the character engine driving all that spectacle. Lucy walks out of the vault with rules and runs into moral weather she can't predict. The Ghoul carries a memory of the old world and the stamina to outlast the new one, shaping the story with hard-earned patience instead of easy violence. Hank's “minimize” project reframes villainy as research, and one button press turns memory into a weapon. It's a season obsessed with identity: who you are without your past, what love looks like when trust is gone, and how choice survives after the world ends.If you've played the games, you'll feel the satisfaction: deathclaws that terrify in numbers, super sledges and power armor that hit like freight trains, a Ron Perlman-voiced super mutant, and small details like sugar bombs and chems that actually matter. But the real trick is how the show uses those pieces to move the plot, not just wink at fans. We also wrestle with big adaptation questions—why this succeeds where Halo stumbled—and map what Colorado might bring next, from cryptids to consequences.Hit play to join us in the wasteland. If this breakdown sparks your brain, share it with a friend, subscribe for more deep dives, and drop a five star juicy review so other wanderers can find the show. What happens when the thing that defines you is suddenly taken away? For legendary American alpinist Jack Tackle, climbing wasn't just a sport — it was identity. For more than five decades, Jack has explored remote mountains across Alaska, the Himalaya, and the Karakoram. He spent decades guiding in the Tetons and helping shape an era of bold American alpinism built on patience, partnership, and resilience. But in the year 2001, everything changed.Jack was struck by Guillain-Barré syndrome, a rare autoimmune disease that attacks the nervous system. Within days he lost the ability to walk and spent 53 days in the hospital, much of that time in intensive care. Doctors later told him that if treatment had come even a day later, he likely would not have survived. For many climbers, that moment would have marked the end.Nine months later, Jack guided a client across the Grand Traverse in the Tetons — one of the most demanding ridge climbs in the United States. Now in his seventies, Jack is still climbing and still reflecting on the deeper question that many athletes eventually face:What happens when your body changes… but the thing that defines you is still calling? In this conversation, Jack shares lessons from a lifetime in the mountains — about resilience, identity, consistency, and the quiet discipline required to keep showing up decade after decade. This episode isn't just about climbing. It's about the deeper human question of what we fight to keep in our lives — and why it matters.---

Want to reach out to us? Want to leave a comment or review? Want to give us a suggestion or berate Anthony? Send us a text by clicking this link!If you could summarize the end times in three words, here's our pick: Restrain. Release. Return. We open Scripture with the Fathers and track Revelation 20 as a map of history—Satan bound so the nations can be evangelized, the saints reigning as the apostolic Church governs, and a brief release that surrounds the camp of the saints before the Lord returns. That lens turns the chaos of our moment into something legible. The fall of paganism once silenced oracles and broke magic; the reverse image explains why occultism resurges, sanctuaries close, and temporal power shrugs at anything higher than itself. We connect the dragon's binding with Jesus' “strong man” parable and Paul's “restrainer” in 2 Thessalonians 2—what the Fathers often saw, in part, as the Roman order transfigured by the Gospel, a Christendom that held the line until it didn't. From there we take up the hard anchors: the Fathers are unanimous that Antichrist will halt public sacrifice, that he will be received by the Jews as a false messiah, and that the Jews will later convert. On the Temple, the tradition isn't unanimous—some read “temple of God” as the Church itself, others expect a rebuilt sanctuary—but either path exposes the same deception. Along the way we revisit Athanasius on the oracles going mute, Augustine and Bede on Ticonius's anti-church growing inside the Church, and why an apostate civilization can be worse than a pagan one. Then the lines get bolder through live caller questions: Is COVID's global suspension of public worship a rehearsal for the prophesied ban? How should we weigh claims about Trump, a rebuilt Temple, or a “great monarch”? What's the right way to compare the TLM and the Novus Ordo without dodging reverence? Where does patriotism fit when you feel no pride? And how do men carry real ambition without pride—working hard, staying ready, and letting God choose the moment? If you're hungry for clarity without hype, this conversation gives you a sturdy frame, a reading list to get started with the Fathers, and practical steps for holiness in confusing times. DESCRIPTION - TNS 18, 2 - St. Bede the Venerable (672-735 CE), Doctor of the Church - on the (biblical text) Song of Songs - Love as LearningOur Guest has been understood to have been the most learned of the Anglo-Saxon Christians. The particular Form of love that we will notice in him is his love expressed in his devotion to learning of God and of the world that God has given us.The age of the Anglo-Saxons extends from the time when the Romans lost control of Britain around 410 CE up to 1066 CE when the Normans invaded Britain. The Anglo-Saxons (the Angles, the Saxons, and the Jutes - invaders from modern day Germany, Denmark, and the Netherlands) were the original “English” peoples (vs. the Britons who were far older, Celtic, inhabitants of Britain), and the type of English that they spoke and wrote was what we call “Old English”.Bede was only 7-years old when he entered a monastery (Benedictine), spending the rest of his life there. Mostly teaching himself by his voracious reading, he had what was clearly a divine desire (what we call a “charism”) to love God through learning. And because God is lord of all, so Bede became through extraordinary effort a polymath; i.e., he became an accomplished student of many disciplines, not just the Bible and all the ways of reading it, not just of Theology, but also, and most famously, of History, and more specifically, his writing of the history of how the Anglo-Saxons came to become Christians. His Ecclesiastical History of the English [i.e., Anglo-Saxon] People is a founding document of the whole discipline of History.Last month at The Night School, our Guest was the author of the biblical book, Song of Songs. This month, we will appreciate how Bede's love for learning gave him the insights he had into Song of Songs. We will explore sections of his Commentary on Song of Songs.Welcome to the Night School.

The holiday season is a time for joy, connection… and let's be honest, a whole lot of pie. From pecan to pumpkin to the classic apple pie, our plates tend to get fuller as the year winds down. On a recent Late Night Health interview, host Mark Allen sat down with Pamela Nisevich Bede — six-time author, marathoner, and nutrition expert with Abbott's Lingo program — to talk about how to enjoy holiday favorites without derailing your health goals. Pamela explains that while overindulging is common this time of year, you don't have to choose between celebration and wellness. Turkey, for example, is a great source of lean protein, and many holiday dishes can be enjoyed guilt-free with just a little strategy. One of her most surprising tips? What you eat first matters. Starting your meal with vegetables, protein, and healthy fats can help stabilize your glucose before digging into carb-heavy favorites. Mood also plays a big role during holiday gatherings — especially when navigating family dynamics. Pamela notes that mood is closely tied to glucose stability. By keeping blood sugar steady, you're better able to stay focused, energized, and emotionally balanced (even when Uncle Joe pushes your buttons). A new tool making this easier is Lingo by Abbott, an over-the-counter continuous glucose monitor that helps you understand how foods affect your body in real time. No prescription needed. With Lingo, she says, people can “take the guesswork out of wellness” and see what actually works for their unique metabolism. And yes — you can still enjoy dessert. Pamela recommends taking a 10–20 minute walk after that slice of pie. Your muscles will use the incoming glucose for fuel, helping keep your energy up instead of sending you straight to the couch for an after-dinner nap. The story of the lands between the Forth and Humber from the end of the Roman period to the Viking kingdom of York is one of the most richly fascinating in British history. This the age of Lindisfarne and of Bede; of the dramatic hills, valleys and ancient routeways that link the Irish Sea and the North Sea; of names that resonate even now: Edwin, Oswald, Hild, Cuthbert, Wilfrid; of conquest, conversion and the legacies of intellectual giants. Northumbria AD 367-867: Earth Hall, Ring Gift and Heaven's Field (Birlinn, 2025) by Max Adams and Colm O'Brien is a history of Early Medieval Northumbria that explores themes of landscape, power, creativity and intellect. Fresh archaeological evidence and research in historical geography shed light on the fascinating story of how land was managed, exploited and deployed as an expression of power by both secular and ecclesiastical forces, and aspects such as the role of élite women in shaping politics and religion is given new focus. Dr. Adams and Dr. O' Brien show conclusively how Northumbria's political, cultural and religious elements coalesced to forge a creative powerhouse which shaped the world we have inherited. This interview was conducted by Dr. Miranda Melcher whose book focuses on post-conflict military integration, understanding treaty negotiation and implementation in civil war contexts, with qualitative analysis of the Angolan and Mozambican civil wars.
