This week on Start Here, Alexis Ffrench ventures into the immersive world of video game music with legendary composer Robin Beanland. With a career spanning decades at Rare, Robin has shaped the sound of some of the most iconic games of all time, from Killer Instinct and Conker's Bad Fur Day to the award-winning Sea of Thieves. Together, they explore how gaming music has evolved from simple 8-bit melodies to sweeping, cinematic scores that enhance storytelling and gameplay. Robin shares insights into his creative process, how music shapes player experience, and the unique way Sea of Thieves uses music dynamically within its open world. Whether you're a lifelong gamer or just curious about the artistry behind game soundtracks, this episode reveals why gaming music is one of the most innovative and powerful forms of composition today. This week, Nathan, Chris, and Riley marvel at the speed with which Sony pulled the plug on its latest live service offering, Concord, a game so focused-grouped for everyone that it ended up being for no one. Are live service games as a whole doomed? Probably not. But the way triple-A publishers approach them – toiling away for years and then releasing something that feels dated on day one – likely is. Then we reflect on the great Twitch vs YouTube livestreaming war, which seems to be ending with a whimper rather than a bang as big-name streamers YouTube signed to multi-million-dollar exclusivity contracts are returning to Twitch now that those contracts are up. With Twitch allowing creators to stream to multiple platforms and YouTube seemingly uninterested in significantly improving its streaming product, why not? In the end, nobody really won The Streaming Wars. Instead, they got distracted trying to copy TikTok. Lastly, we discuss NaNoWriMo's weird stance on AI, which – as with most supposed defenses of AI as a creative tool – just doesn't really make much sense. Oh, and Nathan absolutely knocks it out of the park with his segment transitions this week. Do not believe anyone who tells you otherwise!   Credits - Hosts: Nathan Grayson, Chris Person, and Riley MacLeod - Subscribe to Aftermath!   About The Show Aftermath Hours is the flagship podcast of Aftermath, a worker-owned, subscription-based website covering video games, the internet, and everything that comes after from journalists who previously worked at Kotaku, Vice, and The Washington Post. Sometimes we even bring on guests from both inside and outside the video game industry! I don't know what else to tell you; it's a great time. I fought it for as long as I could, but much like Homer revisiting New York City, it's time for me to face my demons and talk about this damned game. Donkey Kong 64 is the collectathon of all collectathons. You control 5 different Kongs and make your way through a bunch of levels looking for regular bananas, gold bananas, banana birds, coins, blueprints and more stuff I'm probably forgetting. While it's cool that each Kong plays differently and brings something unique to the table, the constant (FUCKING CONSTANT) swapping between them just leaves a sour taste in my mouth that I can't get over. I don't care for this game. My guest, Bradley McCue, isn't the world's biggest fan either. Frankly, I think he's a little harder on the game than I am. But I think we were tough but fair, showed it some love when it deserved it, and voiced our Donkey Kong 64 frustrations in a calm and reasonable manner for the most part. No Angry Adam. And before we go looking for a fucking Kong barrel to swap monkeys with, I put together another edition of the Infamous Intro! This week, someone asks me to rank the 5 Zelda games I'd most like to see remade. Have I tried one of the remapped N64 controllers? And can we expect more Metroid Prime reviews before Prime 4 drops?? Welcome to the July episode of the Digitally Uploaded podcast!  This month, we kick off discussing all the big games in July, highlighting anticipated titles like Final Fantasy XIV: Dawntrail, Battle Cats Unite, and The Legend of Heroes: Trails Through Daybreak. We also discuss niche titles and ports like Spin Rhythm XD, Princess Maker 2 Regeneration, and Earth Defense Force 6. From there, we explore the newly released Nintendo 64 Mature App, which currently includes the two classics Perfect Dark and Turok. Two games doesn't make much of a compilation, so we discuss some of the other games that we hope to see on there, including Turok 2, Conker's Bad Fur Day, and Mortal Kombat Trilogy. Finally, we wrap up with a chat on the representation of female protagonists in gaming. With the upcoming The Legend of Zelda game starring Zelda herself and the recent Princess Peach Showtime, we debate the merits and challenges of diversifying character roles while maintaining their core identities. Thanks as always for tuning in, and we'll see you next month!

Here it is—the very first brodown episode, where the three 3D platformers we discussed will battle it out for the top spot. We previously reviewed Donkey Kong 64, Banjo-Kazooie, and Conker's Bad Fur Day and now we'll see how the brothers rank these classic N64 3D platformers. Ant complains about the controls of all three games but also emphasizes how much fun he had playing Donkey Kong 64. To Pete, it sounds like most of Ant's reasoning boils down to DK being the easiest game of the three games. Tom comes to the realization that Conker is one of his favorite games after his last play through. Pete searches for a tangible reason why the brothers have so much praise for DK64, but not as much for Banjo-Kazooie. To round out the 3D Platformer category, the brothers turn their sights on Conker's Bad Fur Day.  This game was released for the N64 in 2001 by Rare, making this somewhat unofficially a Rare Studios category as well.  The brothers also discuss the remake, Conker: Live and Reloaded.  Help greedy, foul-mouthed, binge drinking, Conker the squirrel, tell the tale of his begrudging ascent to the throne of the Panther King.  This is one of the most unique and comedic games you'll ever play, but Ant wasn't laughing at the poor controls and camera angles. Tom loved the music so much that he wakes up to the sounds of Conker's Bad Fur Day every morning. The brothers laud Conker's basic move set and lack of items to collect. They also lament that the sequel was canceled, but Pete reports all the known information about the lost sequel and discusses the history of the original game's tumultuous development. The brothers ask you this week, which movie parody would you most want to see in a Conker sequel? Toy Story 4 where you search for an old cartridge of Conker's Bad Fur Day, Avengers: Endgame where you must collect stones for the infinity diaper, or Top Gun: Maverick where you reunite with the Squirrel High Command to engage in air combat.  Follow us on X @BrosBossBattles Instagram @BrosBossBattles https://brothersandbossbattles.com/

Podcast breakdown: 1:10 Interview 1:03:17 Break 1:03:53 Outro Issues covered: scanning for IP addresses, supporting QuakeWorld, bored by anything but coding, the Wild West, the Dallas studio, feeling like a Nintendo series, similarities between the glide renderer and the GameCube hardware, a central technology group, arriving to a bit of a mess, a lot of lost undirected work, taking veteran console first person success and turning MetaForce into it, cancelling titles, unhappy marriages, starting on day one, building data streaming, hardware meant for streaming, pattern AI, dynamically modifying for performance, working on a world editor, "you know, a duck," building practical things, there being a lot of fans, bucking against doing first-person, limitations of the controller, working towards accessibility on the controller, having to be 60 and having to stay there, optimizing for the worst case to avoid a hitchy mess, avoiding performance traps in specular and bump mapping, being unable to choke the memory pipelines, throwing up flashing if you went under 60 ever, taking something away to justify anything else, software is a gas that will expand, limiting the content rather than expecting technical wizardry, testing Nintendo's demos, faking specular, being consistent and polished, having a sytem rather than scriptosaurus rex, planners and not designers, limitations, being a bad engineer or a bad artist, knowing where you fit, seeing the constraints in the game, Tim's crisis of faith, Love and Lemons plug!, targeting games where we know people, giving people constraints, relying on designers too much to accomplish goals, embracing constraints. Looks like Sony has lost and the Activision Microsoft deal is all but done. So, what are the possibilities? Yeah, okay, sure. We know they are going to mostly pump out COD year in and year out til they get their ROI. BUT what if they didn't? What if those ten studios they are getting brought back old IP or made some new stuff? Let's just imagine!

I'd never played it before, and when I was done with it, I said I thought it was better that Super Mario 64 (a statement I stand by today). We both agreed that we needed to get around to playing Banjo-Tooie, and then, like, 3 years passed. I knew we'd get to it eventually, but I wasn't sure when. And then a Patreon of the show by the name of Banjo (coincidence?) sponsored an episode, and said it's time. Play Banjo-Tooie. So I did. And hooooo boy, do I have a lot to say about it.    It takes the formula of the original game, and expands on it in a massive way. Bigger levels, more puzzles, and a long-ass cutscene to start the thing off. It's definitely more ambitious than the first game. Is it better? You'll have to listen to find out.    Show sponsor, Banjo, swings by to explain why this game is so damned near and dear to his heart. And then the Banjo to my Kazooie, Mark McCue himself, gives me a call and we take a deep dive into the fun, albeit somewhat controversial, Banjo-Tooie.   And before we get jiggie (see what I did there?), I slap together another edition of the 'Remember The Game? Infamous Intro'!   This week, someone asks how I feel about buying new games at full price. How excited am I about the TMNT: The Last Ronin game?? And how often do people complain about the Infamous Intro??   Plus we play another round of 'Play One, Remake One, Erase One', too! I don't think I've ever ragequit/returned/ragequit/returned a video game as many times as I did Oddworld: Abe's Oddysee. This game is clever, very easy on the eyes, creative as fuck, and TOUGH AS NAILS. The controls are weird, the checkpoints suck, and your margin for error is practically non-existent. I spent the entire playthrough getting angry. But when I finally finished the game, I wanted to go back and play it again. This game is so fucked.   One of our listeners by the online handle of 'Blaine the Hoagie Man' sponsored this episode, tolerated my repeated ragequitting, and managed to convince me that Oddworld belongs up there with Metal Gear Solid, Final Fantasy VII, and Resident Evil as one of the defining games in the original PlayStation's library. He swung by the show this week to explain why he thought I'd enjoy this game, and why it didn't break him back in the 90's.    And after I chat with Blaine, I give my buddy Tyler a call to break down the good, the bad, and the odd that makes up Oddworld: Abe's Oddysee.    And before we talk farts and stuff, I toss together another edition of the 'Remember The Game? Infamous Intro'!   This week, we talked about whether or not mobile gaming is a threat to handhelds like the Nintendo Switch and the Steam Deck. How do I determine the value of a game when I think about buying it? And what's the best retro compilation available on modern consoles these days?   Plus we have another round of 'Play One, Remake One, Erase One', too! When this topic was decided, we overestimated our ability to ignore the obvious crude options.   This was the moment. Time to be a hero, to go down as a legend, forever remembered in the history books as the person who took the team into the final.   He stepped up to the penalty spot, placed the ball and shuffled back. The goalkeeper looked nervous, but then so was the penalty taker. It was a cold afternoon, but inside this arena (a field), things had reached boiling point.   Thoughts flashed through his mind: why is a defender taking this penalty? Why is one of the strikers crying on the sidelines? Who's dad is that shouting and hollering about how “he's going to go to your right”? What happens if he misses? Using the aggro dad's words against him, he struck the ball to the keeper's right, and it worked. The goalie dived the wrong way, the ball sailing clearly into the net... until a leg popped up, seemingly stretched out beyond all boundaries of human contortion. A foot... a toe even, impossibly bulging out of a football boot, nudging the ball onto the post.   The boy had missed.   Time accelerated in a blur, so in an instant the Under 11s Cubs football team was out of the tournament. Steve was still crying on the sidelines, more now, perhaps knowing he'd bottled it as the team's main attacker.   The defender collapsed to his knees. Heartbreak, the same felt by so many of his sporting idols. Glory wasn't to be. Game over.   In that moment the boy vowed that, should it ever come to pass in his future, he'd never take part in a 30-minute (or thereabouts) podcast about balls in sports video games, so welcome to the VG247 Best Games Ever Podcast, Episode 9: Best game with balls that isn't a sports game. Please do let us know what you think of the show – and if this is your first time listening, do go back to listen to the previous episodes. You can listen to them in any order you like as there's no rhyme or reason to the topics. If you've got suggestions for topics, we'd love to hear them. I won't lie. Coming up with new topics each week is harder than I imagined, and I could do with a break. Otherwise, we'll be doing shows like Best game with a character that wears trousers.   “What is VG247's Best Games Ever Podcast?” you ask, still a bit confused about the genre-defying opening to this podcast article. I've tended to say something like “It's a 30-minute panel show where we decide the best game in a specific category,” but given that some of these episodes now touch 40 minutes that's a blatant lie, although still a goal – sometimes we just get a bit carried away. I'm sorry, OK? It's easy to point fingers and say things should have been different. Don't be one of those people. “The boy” knows he should have kept the ball lower. Leave it be. We've got some details on the show's content below (if you want to get a refresher before heading to the comments to make a wonderful, considered post or don't want to listen but do want to know what games we picked), so if you want to avoid spoilers, don't scroll past this warning.   W A R N I N G   The Best Game with balls that isn't a sports game This is the topic of Episode nine of VG247's Best Games Ever Podcast. Here's a rundown of who picked what. Tom – Red Dead Redemption 2 Great game? Check! Perhaps one of the greatest of all time, even. Features balls? Yep. Rockstar modelled those horses accurately. Not a sports game? Check! This one is a full-on western. Surely even Jim can't snatch this victory away from me?   Alex – Conker's Bad Fur Day   When this topic was chosen for the podcast, I obviously decided to interpret balls as testicles, because I am a fully-grown, 33-year-old adult. When I think of bollocks in games, my first thought went right to N64 classic Conker's Bad Fur Day, which is utterly packed with balls. My primary argument is for the Bourgeois Big Bollocked Boiler, a memorable boss that's a giant furnace that happens to have "balls of brass, polished to the nth degree". And what do you do? Well, you get between the boiler's legs and smash its balls with a house brick. This is just one example of the glorious use of balls in Conker, too; there's more in the podcast. A feast for the ears!   Connor - Lethal League   Lethal League is a brilliant fighting game where instead of smacking each other in the faces directly, players must land blows on their opponent via a baseball placed in the centre of the screen. The more the ball is hit, the faster it goes, leading to high intensity matches where spacing is crucial. It's got brilliant music, enticing visuals, a cast of characters each with their own special moves and super attacks. It is also not a sports game! Just because a baseball is present, doesn't make it a sport! If you kick a football through a school window, are you playing football? No way.   Let us know what game you'd pick and if you think Tom was right, again? If you like the podcast, please subscribe and leave a review saying how wonderful it is, and tell all your friends. Do a tweet about it, post on Facebook, write an obituary for Eurogamer's podcast(s) for the local paper, and ask people to listen to this instead.   Come back in a week for another episode of VG247's Best Games Ever Podcast. The extraterrestrial comedy podcast where we probe a pirate legend from the Golden Age of Piracy, Blackbeard. Whilst we usually cover aliens, Kev stages an intervention in this episode to try to turn Granville's souring, skeptical mood by regaling Mr Moonwalker with an actual true tale. A pirates life, if you will? Blackbeard, may have started his life as Edward Thatch before that surname was misspelt as Teach in a Newspaper, later becoming the most popular spelling of this pirates allegedly true name. Blackbeard, is believed to have begun his venture towards the pirate haven of Nassau, New Providence in the Bahamas with Benjamin Hornigold, forming the Pirates Republic before Gentleman Pirate Steve Bonnet, whom Moonwalker suspects he may be related to, landed in the lap of Blackbeard. We cover the pirate life of Blackbeard in detail as Blackbeard sets out to become legend. What were Blackbeard's most daring deeds? Did Blackbeard stick matches in his hair and if so, did his head burn? We also debate pirate names, which by the way are difficult to come up with ‘on the spot' - is Probe McButt-Smash even a pirates name? What about Captain Prick? Anyway… Was Blackbeard as fearsome as the legends make out? Were Blackbeard and/or his crew carrying sexually transmitted diseases and would this inspire Blackbeard to commit his most notorious and dastardly act? Do we even get to Teach's, or Blackbeards Hole today? All that and more on this week's file.     Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/butitwasaliens   Store: https://butitwasaliens.co.uk/shop/     Probe us: Email: butitwasaliens@gmail.com Instagram @ ButItWasAliensPodcast Twitter @ ButItWasAliens Facebook: @ ButItWasAliens - join Extraterrestrial Towers     Music:  Music created via Garageband. Thank you Rare - Kev considers becoming a year one Pirate Legend among his greatest achievements in life. The themes we used included ‘Maiden Voyage' and ‘Shipwrecks' - this music is courtesy of Microsoft and they will probably make us take this down but we really wanted to include some pirate easter eggs and bring some attention to this amazing game at the same time. Special mention to Robin Beanland whom composed the game music and whom also had a hand in Donkey Kong Country and Conker's Bad Fur Day back in the day; another two games around Kev's personal top 10. “I, am, the Great Mighty Poo…” Of course, we had to include the theme tune to Pirates of the Caribbean too, entitled ‘He's a Pirate' which was composed in 2003 by Klaus Badelt and Hans Zimmer for Disney. Again, if Microsoft don't have our butts and make us remove this, Disney certainly will but it simply felt wrong to do an episode on pirates without the famous pirate theme. Go and watch the films, savvy?   Main source: https://www.smithsonianmag.com/history/last-days-blackbeard-180949440/
