I have been in recovery, a recovery coach & an actor for many years & I know first-hand that rock bottom can be the greatest teacher & a springboard for a beautiful life. Creatives are 3x more likely to suffer a mental health problem & those working in performing arts are 2x as likely to have depression & up to 15x more likely to suffer from anxiety. I interview fellow creatives & all inspiring people who have lived through a rock bottom, survived & thrived. These hard learned lessons need to shared, so that no matter how bad things seem, people know there is hope and a way out ❤️

How Addiction Changes The Brain: Thought #15. School of Rock Bottom - Oliver Mason

Play Episode Listen Later May 12, 2025 10:08

If you feel overwhelmed and confused after reading endless articles and books about addiction - you're not alone. In this episode, I break down why understanding addiction is actually simple — and how knowing just TWO key parts of your brain could change everything. This isn't about overcomplicating your recovery. It's about cutting through the noise, empowering you with real knowledge, and showing you that healing is possible. If you want clarity and hope (not just jargon), this is for you.Today, I'm busting one of the biggest myths about addiction: that it's "too complicated to understand."Here's the truth — while the reasons people develop addiction can be complex (trauma, PTSD, anxiety, depression), what actually happens inside the brain is much simpler than you've been led to believe. In this episode, I break it down into two key players: The amygdala, your survival and emotional memory centre. The dopamine reward system, your brain's way of reinforcing survival behaviours. I explain how these two areas work together, how addiction hijacks them, and why it can feel like your very survival depends on alcohol or drugs. But there's good news: because the brain is neuroplastic, you can unlearn what's been learned. Full recovery is possible. Your brain wants to heal — and it can.About the “THOUGHT” series -Every other Monday at 5 PM, I'll bring you a quick ‘thought'—a powerful moment from previous episodes designed to kickstart your week with insight, motivation, and connection. In the next "thought", actor Robert Hands shares his journey of quitting crystal meth. There was no sudden epiphany, no grand moment of realisation—just a simple conversation that shifted everything. Through the haze of addiction, he heard someone say, "I'm stopping," and, somehow, that gave them permission to try too. But this wasn't a story of instant success. The cravings remained, the struggle felt endless, and hope was nowhere to be found. The early days of sobriety were brutal. Sleep was almost impossible, and the urge to use never truly disappeared but one simple strategy that kept him going: just make it to bedtime without using. It wasn't about long-term recovery or a bigger goal—just surviving the next few hours. Each clean day became a small victory. Fourteen days turned into fifteen, then sixteen. Without even realising it, he had moved beyond his usual relapse point and entered unfamiliar territory. If you are struggling with addiction or feeling completely hopeless, this short clip is for you. My guest has a message for anyone in that place of darkness: just focus on getting through today. Get to bed tonight without using. Hope will come, even if you don't believe it yet. In this next thought, we explore a pivotal realisation—how recognising that you're not alone can be a game-changer in mental health recovery & depression. David Sayers, a highly successful Managing Director, shares his personal turning point: sitting in a group therapy session, hearing someone else articulate their feelings with uncanny accuracy, and realising, this isn't just me. That moment of connection shifted everything, breaking the isolation that fuels depression. We discuss the importance of finding a support system—whether friends, family, or colleagues—who create space for open conversations, challenging stigma and how early intervention and organisations bridge the gap between needing help and receiving it.We also discuss the ongoing process of managing mental health, much like physical fitness—there's no ‘final destination,' just continuous growth. We also discuss antidepressants, highlighting that while it doesn't work for everyone, for many, it's a crucial tool in their recovery. This episode is a powerful reminder that vulnerability isn't weakness—it's the first step towards healing. If you're struggling, reach out.
