På smukt og fejlfrit tysk kan du læse på overskriften, at vi skal til Nigeria i denne uges program. Vi begynder faktisk med Joni Haastrup pladen 'Wake Up Your Mind', der jo er en rødglødende politisk afrofunkplade fra sluthalvfjerdserne, du simpelthen bliver nødt til at forholde dig til. Psykisk såvel som fysisk. Men vi skal også have gang i en masse stenhårde 70'er tracks fra Tyskland. Vi taler jazzfunk fra den industrielle skole, hvor alt sidder så klinisk og skarpt, at man skulle tro man var i Japan. Men der er naturligvis stadig en masse nerve og sjæl, ellers ville musikken aldrig blive spillet her i programmet. Det bliver med andre ord sehr gut!

Ce 1er octobre 2020 marque le 60ème anniversaire de l’indépendance du Nigeria. Comme lors de chaque date anniversaire, RFI vous fait revivre l’ambiance musicale de l’époque. Gros plan sur un chanteur exceptionnel dont la carrière s’est amorcée dans les années 60, avant Fela et avant Tony Allen : Joni Haastrup, roi de l'afro-soul. Au début des années 1960, le Nigeria est touché par la Beatles mania. C’est à cette époque que Joni Haastrup, petit-fils d’un roi yoruba de l’ouest du Nigeria, se lance dans la musique, poussé par son frère qui lui prête des disques. Pour Julien Lebrun, co-fondateur du label Hot Casa Records qui a réédité le vinyle Wake up your mind de 1978, « le style de Joni Haastrup peut vraiment être qualifié d'afro-soul. Orlando Julius a popularisé ce style à travers la musique, les arrangements de percussions yoruba et la soul, venue des États-Unis grâce aux voyages de James Brown en Afrique à la même période. Mais Joni Haastrup a pour lui ce timbre de voix de chanteur soul absolument exceptionnel. » « Tout le monde s'arrache Joni Haastrup, poursuit Julien Lebrun. Victor Olaiya le prend dès 1965 dans son groupe, puis Orlando Julius et même Fela a des vues sur lui ! Finalement, il montera son propre groupe, Monomono, en 1971, après une rencontre avec Ginger Baker, fameux batteur de rock et collaborateur de Fela. À ce moment-là, au début des années 1970, son style s'apparente à une fusion entre des arrangements un peu jazz et des guitares très rock : un style plus 'rough', plus 'dur' en quelque sorte. Ce n'est que plus tard, en 1978, à Londres, qu'il enregistrera un album davantage disco, plus funk, "Wake up your mind". L'année suivante, il part s'installer aux États-Unis, dans la Bay Area de Los Angeles. Et il y vit toujours. » Aux États-Unis, Joni Haastrup a été professeur de danse et a continué à jouer dans de petits clubs de jazz. Il a embrassé la religion bouddhiste. A 72 ans, le chanteur est trop affaibli pour répondre à des interviews mais sur Internet certains de ses disques se vendent plusieurs centaines d’euros.

Hugh Masekela brought Hedzoleh Soundz from Ghana, and they settled in Santa Cruz. Nigerian maestros O.J. Ekemode and Joni Haastrup lived in Oakland in the 1970s. South African musicians from the touring stage show Ipitombi also settled in the Bay Area and started the band Zulu Spear. By the early ‘80s, the Bay Area “worldbeat” scene was in full swing, and along with it came Kotoja, Mapenzi, Big City, the Nigerian Allstars and more.
