This week on Transmissions: Adrian Younge and Ali Shaheed Muhammad, the duo behind the label and concert series Jazz Is Dead. Founded in 2017, Jazz Is Dead began releasing new work by jazz artists frequently sampled in rap and hip-hop in 2020, including releases from legendary players like Roy Ayers, Azymuth, Gary Bartz, Lonnie Liston Smith, Tony Allen, and more. On January 31st, the duo released JID022, featuring new music from 88-year-old Ghanian highlife and afrobeat master Ebo Taylor, and on April 4th, they will release JID023, featuring Brazilian vocalist Hyldon. Recorded in analog at Linear Labs, the Jazz is Dead series does more than pair younger players with established elders; it showcases the powerful link that connects musicians across decades. As producers, musicians, podcasters, and much more, both Ali and Adrian are heavy hitters. Muhammad is of course known for his work with A Tribe Called Quest, Lucy Pearl, and The Midnight Hour, a duo with Younge. And of course Adrian is an accomplished musical force too, check out his work with The Delfonics, Souls of Mischief, Ghostface Killah, and Kendrick Lamar. We taped this conversation in January, in the hazy, strange weeks after the terrible fires that tore through the city of Los Angeles. That's where our conversation starts—reflecting on history lost, and what it takes to preserve it, and also, why they don't necessarily think of Jazz Is Dead as an archival or preservationist project in the first place. You can read a full transcript of this conversation at Aquarium Drunkard, where you'll find 20 years worth of playlists, recommendations, reviews, interviews, podcasts, essays, and more. With your support, here's to another decade. Subscribe at Aquarium Drunkard. Stream a playlist of bumper music featured on Transmissions, as well as selections from our guests. This Hip Deep edition, based on field work in Ghana, tells the story of how highlife turned into Afro-funk. Guitarist/composer/bandleader Ebo Taylor, is our principle guide, taking us to his hometown Saltpond to explore the roots of his complex sound, and recounting his highlife years, and his deep study of American jazz in London in the early 60s—all part of a remarkable mix. We also hear from Ghanaian Afro-funk pioneer Gyedu Blay Ambolley and other observers and veterans of this history. Among the figures that interweave this story are James Brown, his most successful African successor Geraldo Pino, and, of course, the creator of Nigerian Afrobeat (a variety of Afro-funk), Fela Anikulapo Kuti. Produced by Banning Eyre. APWW #667

As broadcast Sept 6, 2023 with all the feels. Tonight we welcomed the inimitable, vivacious, and exceedingly talented Dunia Al-jawad back to the show for a very overdue trip to Ghana, a nation that punches above its weight in so many categories, but music has to be the top feature of the exceedingly talented and creative people there. From highlife to hiplife to afrobeats and back to afrobeat, few countries can compare to the exceedingly raw and creative audio lineage that has sprouted from this West African nation since independence and even prior to that.#feelthegravityTracklist (st:rt)Part I (00:00)Ebo Taylor – Love & DeathGyedu-Blay Ambolley – Teacher Ahjaji K Frimpong – Kyenkyen Bi Adi MawuMarijata – No Condition Is Permanent Part II (34:02)E.T. Greetings Glocal Citizens! My guest this week is Ghanaian-Briton, DJ, lecturer, cultural writer and researcher Kobina “Kobby” Ankomah Graham. Raised between the alternate realities of Ghana and Britain, he is passionately curious about music, African culture, and counterculture. Through almost two decades of lecturing, researching (https://kobbygraham.com/teaching-academia/), public speaking, developing creative projects, curating music (https://kobbygraham.com/selected-creative-and-cultural-activities/) and freelance writing (https://kobbygraham.com/freelance-writing/), he has championed arts and culture. He has explored this idea in settings ranging from classrooms to international conferences, and in numerous workshops, panels, podcasts, publications, and dance floors. Along the way, he has been profiled by platforms like the BBC, written for others like The Guardian (https://kobbygraham.com/freelance-writing/), received a Miles Morland African Writers Scholarship (https://milesmorlandfoundation.com/entry-requirements) and DANIDA (https://ghana.um.dk/en/danida-en) funding for Ph.D. research on Ghana's alternative music scene. In doing these things, he is creating pathways for young African creatives, cultural practitioners and journalists to follow. These sentiments come through poetically in this two-part conversation offering wonder-filled insight into a life lived in Accra in view of an evolving arts and culture scene impacting both the local and global creative landscapes. African music is a deep well that never runs dry, the original source from which so much other great music has flowed, from funk, soul and jazz to reggae, blues and rock'n'roll. We'll hear a couple of classics today from Ghana's Ebo Taylor and Nigeria's Peter King, followed by raucous Auckland punk from Guardian Singles and some sunburnt indie psychedelic folk from Tom Lark.

This Hip Deep edition, based on field work in Ghana, tells the story of how highlife turned into Afro-funk. Guitarist/composer/bandleader Ebo Taylor, at 77, is our principle guide, taking us to his hometown Saltpond to explore the roots of his complex sound, and recounting his highlife years, and his deep study of American jazz in London in the early 60s—all part of a remarkable mix. [APWW #667] [Originally aired 2013]

As broadcast July 2, 2021 with mega miles of extra digital legroom for podcast flyers. On this very special presentation of The Drop, we welcome multi-instrumentalist & singer-songwriter Kamen Ross to take over hour two of the show. For the first time in his career, he is dropping a solo album in September called "I Dreamt We Fell In Love," and the lead single to that called "Yellow Rose" drops next week Wednesday. Not only did we get an exclusive premiere for that, but we also got to spin a track on the show that won't drop until the album does in full just over two months from now! Kamen's playlist tonight is all about the timelessness & familiarity of certain sounds in songs, even ones that are relatively new, and his interview was a great talk about the songs that inspire him, the messages that never age, and memories from his childhood.
