This week's conversation with Cochemea Gastelum brings our season to a close. The saxophonist and bandleader joins us to discuss his beautiful LP Ancestros Futuros, out now on Daptone Records. Mining his Indigenous roots, soul jazz, and funk, it's a fantastic album, and it completes a trilogy that began with 2019's All My Relations, continued with 2021's Baca Sewa, and now concludes. Cochemea's resume is lengthy. He worked extensively with the late soul singer Sharon Jones as part of her Dap Kings ensemble and has played with the Budos Band, Antibalas, Robert Walter's 20th Congress, Archie Shepp, Public Enemy, the Roots, David Byrne, and more. Genre-hopping comes naturally to the San Diego-raised saxophonist, but the cultural conversation that occurs on these records is especially unique, and it was a pleasure to have him join us to discuss it. Transmissions is created in partnership with the Talkhouse Podcast Network. We're brought to you by Aquarium Drunkard, an independent music media crew headed by Justin Gage. Over at Aquarium Drunkard, you'll gain access to 20 years of music writing, playlist, essays, mixtapes, radio special, podcasts, videos and more.

Amayo is the Nigerian-born, Atlanta-based singer and songwriter who was the longtime front-person for the band Antibalas. Now out on his own, Amayo continues to create his own distinctive take on the Afrobeat sound pioneered in the 1970s by the legendary Fela Kuti. But Amayo's songwriting and his live performances are also deeply affected by his longtime Kung Fu practice - he is a senior master (Sifu) of the Jow Ga Kung Fu School of martial arts. AMAYO's new solo album is called Lion Awakes, and he and his big band play some of the high-energy tunes, in-studio. Set list: 1. Lion Awakes 2. Black Magic Sister
Amayo, the Nigerian-born former frontman for Afrobeat collective Antibalas, strikes out on his own with his debut solo album, Lion Awakes, out January 17. The record is dedicated to his grandmother, a shamamic medicine woman, and Amayo’s Kung Fu practice. “Black Magic Sister” offers up a chorus of voices which Amayo says is, “about offering blessings for an abundant mindset. It’s also a prayer for twins and a wish for those who lost close ones.”

Today's guest makes me want more names. It's Jeremy Wilms and we'll go through all his different names throughout this episode. But each one has a reason. Jeremy is his family's musical version of “3rd time's a charm”. He's managed to study and play guitar with some amazing people. After college, he moved from Duluth, GA to NYC and kept studying in the form of open jam sessions with his neighbors and some naked people. Jeremy is a guitar player but started getting actual work after he picked up the bass. That led him to playing with the legendary Chico Hamilton and Antibalas. His time in Antibalas opened more doors for him; like the time the band literally split in two when one half played live shows and the other half (Jeremy's half) eventually played on Broadway in the show based on the life of Fela Kuti. THAT led to an unusual and slightly awkward session with Jay-Z and Beyonce that has never been released. Jeremy also talks about being in a wedding band with Elvis Costello and tells the story of Ornette Coleman's leftover Burger King. These are perfect examples of his being open to new and unusual experiences, like arranging strings for Run The Jewels, studying with Michael Mossman for a Master's in composition, and moving back to GA during COVID. That's been a big turning point in how he writes and you can really hear it in his new album, The Fighter. Definitely check that out on Bandcamp or jeremywilms.com. Soul is the most powerful expression of American music--a distinct combination of roots, migration, race, culture, and politics packaged together for your dancing pleasure. But if you thought the sounds of Motown or Stax Records died along with 8-tracks and macramé, you'd be wrong. For two decades, Daptone Records has churned out hard funk and such beautiful soul that these records sparked a musical revolution. Run by a collective of soul-obsessed producers and musicians, the Brooklyn-based independent label launched the careers of artists such as Amy Winehouse, Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings, Charles Bradley, and Bruno Mars. Daptone's records--and those of the larger soul revival scene--pay homage but never lip service to the original artists, proving that soul is still culturally relevant, and just as exciting as ever. It Ain't Retro: Daptone Records and the 21st-Century Soul Revolution (Jawbone, 2021) charts this revival's players, sounds, and tectonic shifts over the past twenty years, taking you from dingy clubs where soul crazed DJs packed the dancefloor, to just uptown where some of the genre's heaviest musicians jumpstarted the renaissance in a basement studio, and all the way to the White House. This definitive tale of Daptone Records' soulful revolution chronicles the label's history, players, and sounds while dissecting the scene's cultural underpinnings, which continue to reverberate in pop music. The book also contains rare and unseen images of Daptone artists past and present, including Sharon Jones, Charles Bradley, Lee Fields, Antibalas, The Sugarman 3, The Budos Band, and more. Jessica Lipsky is a journalist and DJ from Brooklyn by way of the San Francisco Bay. She first encountered sweet soul music as a child by obsessively tuning her radio dial and has since extensively covered soul, funk, reggae, and alternative Latin music. Her work on the intersection of culture, music, and politics has appeared in NPR, Billboard, Grammy.com, Columbia Journalism Review, Vice, and LA Weekly. Jessica Lipsky on Twitter.
