This week, Davy reports back from his adventures in Newcastle, where THE FACE spotlighted local talent for the New Noise gig series. Our Branded Content Editor Joe Bobowicz is back on the pod to tell us all about Art Basel Paris, where Shuang Li celebrated her love of My Chemical Romance and Young Boy Dancing Group served snacks and refreshments in a very, erm, unconventional manner. Matthew shares his thoughts on Ali Abbasi's questionable Trump biopic, The Apprentice, while Jade recommends Andrea Arnold's Barry Keoghan-starring kitchen sink drama, Bird. Tyler, the Creator has dropped his Zamrock-sampling comeback single NOID and his new album Chromakopia is out on Monday. We're excited, but since Tyler dissed the new generation of artists in a recent interview, has this once eternally-teenage maverick finally reached old head status? Press play to hear our thoughts. Channelling Jagger, blending late 60s psychedelic rock, and reflecting the post-colonial world of Zambia, WITCH blazed a trail across the former British colony fuelled by cash-rich punters and strong governmental support for their output. This year, 2023, marks the 50th anniversary of hip-hop. On August 11, 1973, a party went down in New York City. DJ Kool Herc was there, and he'd been playing around with a technique where he'd play the break from one record, then another, looping them and creating something new. On this night in the Bronx, b-boys and girls danced, then Herc and his friend Coke La Rock started speaking, rhyming over the music. Hip-hop was born. The foundations of a sound and scene that would change the world are being celebrated throughout this year, including right here on the Take 5. Across many years I've had the great pleasure in chatting with lots of hip-hop legends and hear them chat about their fandom too. It was back in 2016 when I first met Sampa the Great, and asked her to Take 5. And given this auspicious anniversary, I thought it'd be fun to dig into the archives, and house it here on the podcast for the first time. A lot can happen in 7 years. When I met Sampa, she'd just released her first mixtape. She'd gotten a heap of attention when handpicked by Kendrick Lamar to support his arena shows in Australia. And her future as a multi award winning artist who would not mince words, who would enliven Zamrock for a new generation, and become one of the most talked about artists of our time… it was all yet to come. Thandiswa Mazwai - Ndiyahamba (I'm Leaving) Lauryn Hill – To Zion Nina Simone – Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood 2pac – Changes Chance The Rapper – Wonderful Everyday

Sampa the Great, Thandiswa Mazwai, Emmanuel Jagari Chanda and Mag44 discuss music standing the test of time, African music, and the new generation of musicians. Sampa the Great was born in Ndola in Zambia and became interested in music from a young age, writing poems and singing from the age of 9, spending time in both Zambia and Botswana. She released her first mixtape in 2015 whilst at university in Australia, and created a sound influenced by everything from classic hip-hop to Zamrock. Her latest album, As Above So Below, was released last September and came about after returning home to Zambia during the early days of the pandemic. Thandiswa Mazwai is one of the most influential South African musicians around today. She has been at the forefront of change in South African music since the late 90s with her politically-conscious lyrics and stunning vocals, both as a solo artist and lead singer of ground-breaking trio Bongo Maffin. Emmanuel Jagari Chanda is a founding member of the Zambian rock genre known as Zamrock, which blends rock with funk and African rhythms. He was the leader of the band Witch (We Intend to Cause Havoc) who were the first band to record a commercial record in Zambia in the 1970s. Magnus Mando, AKA Mag44, is a rapper and music producer who has expanded Zambia's musical horizons. He started singing and rapping in church, before writing his own lyrics which gave birth to his career. He also co-produced Sampa the Great's latest LP.
Zambian singer Sampa The Great and her band have consistently broken barriers as the first Zambian performers at Lollapalooza, Coachella and, most recently, ‘The Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon.' Currently on tour in support of the deluxe version of her 2022 album ‘As Above, So Below,' Sampa called in from the road to chat with Vocalo's Nudia Hernandez on the air before her Chicago show at Thalia Hall on June 14. They discussed the album, touring, her Zamrock roots, meeting Michelle Obama and having a song featured in a trailer for ‘Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.' This interview aired on Vocalo Radio 91.1 FM during Nudia In the Afternoons on Wednesday, June 14. It was edited and produced by Nudia Hernandez and Morgan Ciocca. Keep up with Sampa The Great on Instagram @sampa_the_great.
W.I.T.C.H. talks about the elements that came together to form Zamrock in the 60s. They discuss how Zambia's economic struggles, forced curfews as well as disco caused the band to stop playing in the 80s. Then they talk about how reissues of their albums in recent years, a documentary out about them, and their new album has allowed them to be rediscovered on an international scale, decades later. “We belonged to a federation,” frontman Jagari Chanda explains “That was Zambia, Malawi and Zimbabwe. Because of the federation, we did similar things in terms of social amenities and get togethers and it was like a crisscross pollination. People from different countries brought their own cultures and their own traditions. They brought their own dances, and this is where we got the traditional aspect of music. But the international influence came from the western world, from our colonial masters. They brought in the guitar, the jukeboxes, especially the radio.” Support the show: https://www.kexp.org/sound/See omny.fm/listener for privacy information.

WITCH - "Waile" a 2022 single on Desert Daze/Partisan. It's been almost 40 years since WITCH (which stands for "We Intend To Cause Havoc") caused some havoc. The Zambia-based band were early adopters of the "Zamrock" sound, a combination of traditional African music with psychedelic rock, releasing seven albums back in the '70s and '80s. After Zambia-born hip-hop artist Sampa The Great featured them on her latest LP As Above, So Below, WITCH decided to reconvene, releasing the single "Waile." "'Waile' was one of the songs that I brought to the WITCH when I joined in 1978," explained keyboardist Patrick Mwondela via a press release. "While it was played live often back in the day, it was never recorded until the new formation of the band picked it up 43 years later during a rehearsal on an island in Kenya, where the band embraced it and made it their own. A few months after that, they gave it a new lease of life by recording it in Lusaka's legendary DB Studios. Sang in my native language Luvale, the subject matter is a nostalgic wailing for home of ancient African tribes that would eventually settle in Zambia." A compelling voice in global hip-hop, Sampa The Great lived up to her moniker on MBE recently. In the last couple of years, the Zambian-born, Botswana-raised poet returned to Zambia where she dug deep to find the strength she needed from her upbringing to pour into her work. “Never Forget” is an ode to the socially prolific genre of Zamrock.
Eva Walker is a founding member, guitarist and singer for Seattle based The Black Tones. With one full length record (Cobain and Cornbread) and a Sub Pop single under their belts, The Black Tones are embarking on their first North American tour this fall. In this episode, Eva shares her experience working with both Jack Endino and Don Farwell, the importance of a groove and the role trust plays in their writing and performance. We learn why Eva and Cedric share a free form of expression and how the root of that free spirit lies in both family and the story of a lifelong educator and a bank robber. The two Seattleites discuss their experiences as transplants and how they were both psyched to be a part of the Sub Pop family. Eva hips us to some new bands and we hear a couple tunes.
