Mysteries abound this week on EarWax! Never has "the man, the myth, the legend" rang truer than when we dive into "Who Is William Onyeabor?"A bizarre mix of funk, soul, and porto-techno, this record is a collection of songs pulled from Onyeabor's brief but prolific discography. His life and career remain largely enigmatic, due in no small part to his own efforts. We ask "why" and "how," because we want so badly to understand the context for which such forward-thinking music sprang. Ultimately, "Who Is William Onyeabor?" provides very little answers to those questions, but it serves a greater purpose - it grooves. Thanks for listening! O.J.

We had the pleasure of interviewing Sinkane over Zoom video!Sinkane (aka Sudanese-American musician Ahmed Gallab) announces his upcoming album We Belong, out April 5. His first full-length release since Dépaysé in 2019, We Belong is Sinkane's “love letter to Black music,” tak ing cues from gospel, Afrobeats, 70s funk, foundational soul of the rhythms of Sinkane's native Sudan and more. Alongside the album announcement, he shares a new single “How Sweet Is Your Love” and its accompanying music video. The upcoming project We Belong, tells introspective–and sometimes painful–stories of the Black diaspora with an underlying current of love and hope for the future. “How Sweet Is Your Love” marks a celebratory, funk-infused high point of the project. Set against heavy disco synth instrumentals and riffing strings, Sinkane encourages listeners to cast away their worries and embrace the current moment. “‘How Sweet Is Your Love' is about remaining in the present and feeling all of your feelings as fully as possible," Sinkane comments. "It dares you to prove the sweetness of your love, to your loves!”For this project, Sinkane assembled the who's who of musicians and collaborators which include Beastie Boys producer Money Mark, jazz fusion maestro Casey Benjamin, guitarist/producer Mikey Freedom Hart, Phony Ppl's Aja Grant, percussionist Meia Noite, organist Shedrick Mitchell, former bandmate Amanda Khiri and singers Bilal, STOUT, Tru Osborne and Hollie Cook. He has also created an all-star six piece band called The Message, who support Sinkane live. Band members include: Ronnie Lanzilotta (bass), Dave Palazola (drums), Patt Carr (keys), Asher Kurtz (guitar), Ifedayo (vocalist) and Jessica Harp (vocalist). The first single off the project, “Everything is Everything,” featuring vocalist Tru Osborne, is an acute reflection of life as a Black person in America (watch HERE / listen HERE). Sinkane opens the jazzy ballad “We're here again / Ain't nobody listenin'… Y'all only know our names from hashtags'' before taking a hopeful turn; “The tides of change / Serve great purpose in our every day / My people, we will find our way.” Upon release, Stereogum called it “a social commentary set against a cinematic, immersive sonic landscape.” Sinkane has always paved his own way, defying all odds and surpassing expectations. With seven studio albums under his belt and an illustrious career as a composer, producer and band leader, he has orchestrated remarkable projects. From music directing the Atomic Bomb! Band, the resounding revival of Nigerian funk musician William Onyeabor, to composing the “lively” (The Guardian) musical adaptation of Roald Dahl's The Enormous Crocodile which debuted last month, Ahmed's journey has been extraordinary to say the least. We want to hear from you!

They are clips from a tune called, "Fantastic Man" by William Onyeabor. This, I found, on his 2013 record, World Psychedelic Classics 5: Who Is William Onyeabor? (c/o Luaka Bop, Inc.).

This episode of Across The Margin : The Podcast features an interview with pianist, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and record producer, who has been a fixture of the New York experimental music rock and jazz scene since 1999, Marco Benevento. Marco's music covers a wide swath of ground, seemingly connecting the dots in the vast space between LCD Soundsystem and legendary musician Leon Russell. His songwriting is smart and earthy, yet simultaneously pulsating with dance rock energy. Benevento's high energy live shows — fronting a three-piece band currently composed by bassist Karina Rykman and drummer Dave Butler — have led to numerous high profile appearances, ranging from Carnegie Hall, to High Sierra Music Festival, Peach Festival, and beyond. Marco is the founder and recording engineer of Fred Short, a recording studio in Upstate New York, and a member of the groups Benevento/Russo Duo and Joe Russo's Almost Dead. In the studio, he's collaborated with the likes of Richard Swift (The Shins, Nathaniel Rateliff), Leon Michels (Lee Fields, Freddie Gibbs) and Simone Felice (The Felice Brothers, The Lumineers) among others. While Marco's work is prolific and all worthy of discussion, this episode focuses on his forthcoming album Benevento. Titled as a nod to Paul McCartney's first solo album, what Benevento amounts to is forty minutes of small-batch psychedelia in which, with few exceptions, Marco played all of the instruments. He also produced and engineered the album, all from Fred Short Studios, located at his Woodstock, NY home. Deeply indebted to the West African psychedelia of artists such as Kiki Gyan, Francis Bebey and William Onyeabor, the songs are rhythmic and repetitive, built into thick mosaics of sound. In this episode host Michael Shields and Marco Benevento delve into the album's influences and the manner in which it all came to life within his upstate studio. They discuss how the lyrics were created in collaboration with Al Howard, a San Diego-based poet, and what it was like playing all instruments on the album himself. They also discuss a festival Benevento is curating in Accord, New York this June called Follow The Arrow (tickets available now!), and much, much more. When Bob Marley died in 1981, Island Records wanted to repeat the success they found with the reggae star by marketing King Sunny Ade as ‘The African Bob Marley'. It didn't really work, but the attempt brought Nigeria's unique style of afrobeat - “juju music” - to the international spotlight. Compiled in 2003 by Shanachie Records, ‘The Best Of The Classic Years' documents the pre-Island period of Ade's career (1969-1974) before the watered down attempts at crossover success - lyrics entirely in Yoruba, seventeen-minute long jams, and rawer production. It's also the 464th Greatest Album of All Time, according to Rolling Stone magazine. Christopher and Liam use the record as a springboard to discuss everything from the Yoruban talking drum, William Onyeabor, Ebo Taylor, Ghanian highlife, the difference between a nightclub and a hotel in Nigeria, doing the washing-up, the musical tastes of the British royal family, and the filmography of Richard Gere. All that and more, plus an even-handed installment of Secret Posho, on episode 36 of Enjoy An Album. Enjoy!

The Big Playback is a podcast about all things music.Episode 1 of ‘The Big Playback' is titled Is Music A Religion? This first episode investigates how music and spirituality are inextricably intertwined and takes a closer look at the transcendent experience of live music, the re-enactment of its rituals, connection and belonging. It examines what it means to be a part of the music community, from the maker to the listener – the spectrum of ways music affects us, from the individual to the collective, which can be both a social glue and a vehicle for transcendence. The episode centers around conversations with three guests: Brian Collins (Chair of Indian Religion and Philosophy, Ohio University), Sanae Yamada (Moon Duo, Vive La Void) and Yale Evelev (Luaka Bop Records). The ScholarAs an actively lecturing professor, music lover and record collector who often writes articles about religion and popular culture on the side, Brian Collins takes us through the various aspects of Indian philosophy and religion which were incorporated into popular music in the 60's, giving birth to a radical psychedelic culture which lead to so many modern musical genres of today. The SeekerSanae Yamada is a Portland-based artist, composer, musician and writer, who plays keyboard in the bands Moon Duo as well as her solo project Vive La Void. As an investigator into many spiritual traditions, from buddhism and meditation to feminist anthropology, Yamada takes on the question Is Music A Religion? from the perspective of someone who, for over a decade, has been active within a scene which glamorizes spirituality without necessarily practicing it.The DevoteeFounded in 1989, Luaka Bop Records boasts a rather mysterious catalogue, the crown jewels of which are often archival projects of artists who have already passed on, or rarely still play live. While their releases include the likes of Alice Coltrane, Tim Maia, William Onyeabor, as well as the upcoming Pharoah Sanders and Floating Points album, Yale Evelev speaks about his process and philosophy behind the World Spirituality Classics series, and why he views himself as merely a conduit for the music, in his work.Host of 'The Big Playback' is Margaret Munchheimer, an American visual artist and writer living in the Netherlands, and veteran Le Guess Who? supporter since 2012.CreditsProduction: Margaret Munchheimer & Le Guess Who?Contributing Editor: Jasper WillemsArtwork: Lily McNeil, Lily Nilly Art / www.lilynillyart.comMusic: Ultrabillions / ultrabillions.bandcamp.com
