Joseph A. Gervasi's youthful punk projects included The Cabbage Collective,NO LONGER A FANzine, Philly Zine, and The Orgasmic Toilet Band. Non-punk later projects include Exhumed Films (www.ExhumedFilms.com) and his business, Diabolik DVD (www.DiabolikDVD.com). Joseph co-conceived The Valerie Project with Greg Weeks. It was a live musical accompaniment to the 1970 Czech New Wave film Valerie and Her Week of Wonders. Live performances were held in Philadelphia, MoMA in NYC, Jarvis Cocker's Meltdown Festival at the Royal Festival Hall in London, and around North America. A CD/LP was released by Drag City in the US and Finders Keepers in the UK. The music and interviews with Joseph and Greg Weeks appear on the Criterion Collection release of the film. Joseph's less youthful punk project is LOUD! FAST! PHILLY!, an "aural history" of hardcore punk in Philadelphia. These interviews (along with portraits of many of the interview subjects by Karen Kirchhoff) can be found at www.LoudFastPhilly.com or wherever podcasts can be heard. More recently Joseph has been involved with the Pete Buttigieg campaign, the organization Veterans For Responsible Leadership (www.VFRL.org), and the Dr. Jill Biden For First Lady Facebook page. Joseph A. Gervasi interviews illustrator and writer Greg Pizzoli. Greg is the author of several acclaimed books for children including: The Watermelon Seed (winner of the Theodor Seuss Geisel Award), Templeton Gets His Wish, Tricky Vic, Number One Sam, Good Night Owl, and The Quest For Z. His books are published by Viking Children’s Books (a division of Penguin) and Disney Hyperion. Greg also comes from punk, which has influenced his work in many ways. Greg finds himself in a unique position: writing books that are read and loved by scores of children around the world. With the attention comes a responsibility, though he deftly avoids using his work to moralize to his readers. Greg speaks at schools about forty times a year and uses his ability to communicate with the kids without condescension to encourage creativity. We talk about Greg’s early influences in music and books and how those works shaped him into the writer he is today. Perhaps most crucially, we talk about spreading empathy in dark times. Greg is in a unique position to be able to communicate to the kids who are the future, and what he says about them (and, I’d add, what he helps to foster in them) is an encouraging sign that we’re all looking for and rejoice in seeing. Some seeds one swallows — inadvertently or with intention — when young grow into trees of great and lasting beauty. Greg Pizzoli’s website Photos by Karen Kirchhoff   The post LOUD! FAST! PHILLY! Joseph A. Gervasi interviews Dave “Bass” Brown. Dave grew up around Philadelphia and started going to underground/punk shows at the Hot Club in the late 1970s. He went on to form the band The Ecstatics with Cordy Swope, later of Ruin (and also interviewed in this series). Upon moving to Boston to attend the Berklee School of Music, Dave played in a band with Aimee Mann. Most essential for L!F!P!, Dave played drums in the short-lived but legendary Boston hardcore band Negative FX (with Jack “Choke” Kelly, later of Last Rights and Slapshot on vocals). We talk about the being in the band, their demo and sole LP, Dave’s disdain for the record’s Charles Manson cover, the tremendous influence this LP has had on bands on over the years, the infamous Choke, and the early HC scene. We also talk about some of Dave’s other music projects, like playing in The Lyres and the Straw Dogs, as well as releasing rare Philly soul records. This interview is preceded by a short (about four minutes) introduction by Joseph. Photos by Karen Kirchhoff     The post LOUD! FAST! Welcome CINEPUNX to a very special edition of our show!! For this episode we were invited by friend/collaborator/awesome guy Joseph Gervasi to be apart of the LOUD! FAST! PHILLY! hosted screening of NEW BREED DOCUMENTARY 1989 as part of the CINEDELPHIA FILM FEST! Freddy Alva, Tony Rettman, John Woods, and Orlando Arce sat down with us. Each of them are not only a part of making this interesting film, but are likely known to you for their other endeavors, and of course Freddy Alva put the original tape compilation together with Chaka Malik. We were honored to have such an accomplished panel of guests to talk about this amazing documentary, and of course to talk a bit about the compliation itself and the era of NYHC it represents.  Here are some pictures of the event and of us recording for it!   We cannot thank everyone involved enough for such an awesome event, and helping us record a truly fun episode. Even Evan V got in on the action and asked a question! He also took 3 of the pictures above so that is important too. The sound turned out pretty good, despite plugging in WAY more microphones than we have ever done before. Darren Finizio/June 16, 2014 Joseph A. Gervasi inteviews Darren Finizio of the “identity bands” Hoppy the Frog, Muscle Factory, Well-Hung Man, Dyke, Faggot, Casket, Paraplegic, etc. While a life-long resident of Bensalem, PA with a self-avowed hatred of hardcore and the city of Philadelphia, Darren has been a cult figure in the Philadelphia underground music scene for decades. At times beloved — but just as often loathed (often by sound guys at clubs who just don’t get him) — Darren continues to present his many and varied artistic visions to at times hostile and often utterly bemused audiences (both in live settings and on his YouTube channel). We discuss Darren’s upbringing, his early music projects, attending punk shows at DIY venues such as Love Hall, the genesis of his most popular bands (Hoppy the Frog and Muscle Factory), his vast knowledge of music, Darren’s status as a permanent outsider despite a desire to have his work recognized, his disdain for the documentary made about him in 2004, drugs, getting ripped, and much more. Enjoy over 90 minutes inside the beautifully-coiffed skull of one of Philly’s most creative and divisive performers. Reference: In preparing to interview Darren, I re-read a Philadelphia Weekly cover story I originally read upon publication in 2004. It’s entitled “Bad Music For Bad People” by Jonathan Valania and it was published on March 31, 2004. You can read it here. You can see the the 2004 Hello My Name Is Darren documentary that Darren has distanced himself from here. It’s presented in four short parts. Ryann Casey/November 4, 2013 Joseph A. Gervasi interviews Ryann Casey. Ryann grew up on New Jersey and only moved to Philadelphia about six years ago. In that time, she’s hosted art shows at various locations around the city, including the Grindcore House. These art shows benefit environmental and animal-oriented causes. They’ve raised both money and awareness while presenting the work of some tremendously talented artists. We discuss Ryann’s upbringing in a Roman Catholic home in North Jersey with a feminist, pro-Choice mother coupled with the influence of her grandmother. Art became a huge part of Ryann’s life at a young age and punk came on a few years later. In punk she found some of her ideals and social/political passions reflected back to her. While she’s always felt like a bit of an outsider in the punk community, she’s none-the-less a part of it as an organizer of significant events. We talk some about the mechanics of putting on charity events, what she looks for in organizations her efforts (and those of the participating artists) will benefit, how she overcame her shyness to deal with speaking publicly, and how to deal with the trolls who emerge from the lousy woodpile when one’s efforts are discussed in public forums. We also talk about non-traditional creative, artistic, and activist paths for young women. This was one of my most pleasurable talks in the series, so I hope you’ll spend some time listening Ryann Casey and I chat. Photos by Karen Kirchhoff     The post LOUD! FAST! PHILLY! Dan didn’t grow up in Philadelphia, but he’s lived here for 21 years. Dan’s played in three very popular bands and, into his forties, retains a tremendous enthusiasm for music and life. His devotion to the DIY ethos is still firmly in place. We talk about his upbringing surrounded by books in North Jersey in the ’70s and early ’80s, his early love of music beginning with hard rock, his discovery of punk through bands like The Clash in the early ’80s, his political and social aweness as well as veganism, playing in bands, seeing shows in dodgy places like City Gardens in Trenton, being inspired by the DIY ethos in the ’90s at the Jon Hiltz and Cabbage Collective shows and with bands such as Universal Order of Armageddon and John Henry West, the state of basement shows in Philly today, raising children, and scores of other subjects. Dan’s enthusiasm and positivity shine through in this interview. Addendum: The black-and-white photo was taken by Karen Kirchhoff in May 2014, the better part of a year after this interview was conducted. She took this photo so Dan could be included in her photo show at the Grindcore House begining on June 6, 2014.             The post LOUD! FAST! PHILLY!
