Shanda and Bonnie discuss the specific technology that each of them use for their school visits... (Bonnie) Welcome to the Author Visit Podcast! I'm author Bonnie Clark. (Shanda) And I'm author-illustrator, Shanda McCloskey. (Bonnie) It's August here in GA and our kiddos just started back to school, so the school visit season is upon us! Today we are talking with all about the tech we use and depend on for doing an author visit. (Shanda) This was actually a request from a listener, and I'm so glad she wrote to us about this topic because it's true, we haven't gone into much detail about our tech requirements thus far! But before we get started, let's catch our listeners up on what we've been up to for the past few months. What've you been up to, Bon? (Bonnie) I'm really happy to be back in the saddle with you Shanda!! I know we didn't intend to take a break for this long but honestly I needed it. I've had some life things going on and honestly I have been discouraged on the book front for a while now, but things are looking up! I'm excited to announce that I have signed with a new agent: Kristin Terrette of MLM. We've been social media friends for years and liked each other's posts. She's an author turned agent and turns out we have a similar connection to the way we first met Shanda…My husband Keenan cut her and her family's hair years ago! She lives here in north GA so it's kind of cool to be able to meet in person and have coffee and talk about books. I had a fantastic experience with my previous agent- I adore her personally and professionally, but I really felt like it was time for a change. Already I feel re-energized, hopeful about my projects and I feel like my creative spark is back. SO yay! (Shanda) Summer was busy with family stuff - both daughter's birthdays, a family reunion, a family vacation, and some bigger house projects like cleaning out a big attic/closet space. I was in waiting mode as far as work stuff went, which was actually a good thing. I was waiting on the 2nd round of sketches feedback from Chronicle for the Rube Goldberg nonfiction book by Catherine Thimesh I'm illustrating, and also waiting on a contract from Disney Hyperion for an illustration project about an autistic child, called Lilibet makes a Friend by Kersten Hamilton. My agent also sent out my young graphic novel book proposal to a handful of editors, so I'm waiting on those responses too. Lots and lot's of waiting. (Bonnie) Let's dive in… Slides? Programs? Bring a computer? Use the school's? How do you read your book? Shanda: I read the book on slides (spread by spread) so it's easy to see. (I try to memorize the book so I don't crink my neck or face away from the audience while reading too much) I've never been handed a PDF of my books with the text and all from my publishers so … To get the book into slide form I've done two things - 1. I took pics of the actual book pages, but the color always looks a bit off, so 2. I've recently discovered that if I borrow the e-book from Libby, I can flip through the book and take screenshots of each spread. The colors are perfection! And I figure it's not stealing since it's my book :) But I wouldn't do that with a book that isn't mine. What's in your tech kit that you bring to each school? Extra Cords/adapters? Backups? Shanda: I bring my own my laptop computer and it's charging block/cord, USBC adapter, HDMI cord, a 10 ft extension cord, a remote clicker with extra AAA batteries, and a jump drive just in case. PDF version of slides on jump drive, emailed slides to myself. What's gone wrong before? What did you do? Shanda: Even with all my cords and dongles (I hate that word) I still ended up not being able to use my own computer at a school once. So they brought in a school computer and I used my jump drive to access the presentations, but there was not enough processing power/memory/whatever on that computer to open my presentations. Luckily, I had one saved as a flat PDF. So I used that and just flipped through the PDF for the presentation. Of course, I couldn't play any videos on it but it was better than nothing - which is what I did for the first presentation of the day while the librarian and other education tried to troubleshoot. Enjoy our presentation of The Voting Booth, written by Brandy Colbert and published by Disney-Hyperion.Marva Sheridan has always been driven to make a difference in the world, and what better way than to vote in her first election? When Marva sees Duke turned away from their polling place, she takes it upon herself to make sure his vote is counted. And that's how their whirlwind day begins, rushing from precinct to precinct, cutting school, waiting in endless lines, turned away time and again, trying to do one simple thing: vote. Surprise! We're back! And surprise! We're joined by another author from the stellar Rick Riordan Presents line: Kwame Mbalia, author of Tristan Strong Punches a Hole in the Sky. What's most incredible about Tristan Strong is not its powerful characters or original storyline (though those are awesome), it's that the book is Mbalia's debut novel! It's truly a staggering achievement. On this episode, we talk about Tristan Strong the book, Tristan Strong the character as an Anansesem, cultural memory, and presenting timeless mythologies to an audience that might not be familiar with them.
Shauna Holyoak and I discuss her KAZU JONES series with tips for writing middle grade mysteries, rewriting a story until it's right, and writing about a protagonist that's a different race than her author. Shauna tells the tale of how she landed her agent, previous guest Carrie Pestritto, and how she started her literary career after becoming a parent by writing a regular column. We also chat about book marketing, school visits, actively working to transition from a pantser to a plotter, and so much more. Shauna has been telling stories long before she could ride a bike, and some of them are even true! She writes for kids and teens and thinks it’s kinda the best job ever. KAZU JONES AND THE DENVER DOGNAPPERS is her debut novel, and it was released by Disney-Hyperion in April, 2019! She lives in Idaho Falls, ID with her husband, six of their seven children, and two naughty dogs.
We pick up right where we left off this week in a 2-part interview with author Sarah Jane Marsh and the draft of her debut book, Thomas Paine and the Dangerous Word. In this episode, Sarah shares the rest of what would become a six year journey to publication. A rebel herself - just like Thomas Paine - Sarah managed to find an agent who embraced her manuscript in its unconventionally long format. Together, they found a home with Disney Hyperion for what would become an 80-page, 2500 word picture book. After the sale of her first book, Sarah got busy writing again which is why she has another book, Most Wanted: The Revolutionary Partnership of John Hancock and Samuel Adams, coming out next year. The publishing world might move slowly, but our evolving view of history has been shifting dramatically these past few years. Sarah doesn't shy away from addressing some of the more controversial topics her revolutionary history books might raise including the direct line from slavery to the Black Lives Matter movement and the fact that the celebrated colonization of America was really the invasion of an indigenous population. Sarah also shares candidly why its rare for a writer to make a living from their craft. Writing will always be her passion, but she's also found a way to transition from PTA-mom-with-an-idea to working in a paid position for a local non-profit that focuses on the critical poverty and mental health needs of her community.
Sarah Marsh had two passions when she was a child: reading and animals. We all had childhood passions, but few have kept them as guideposts throughout their careers as she has. Sarah started as a zoo volunteer when she was still a teen and went on to study wildlife conservation in college. Her hard work paid off and she landed many exciting jobs: dolphin trainer, zookeeper and firefighter. In today’s episode, the first of two parts, Sarah shares her early career, a business detour that earned her an MBA and some valuable startup experience, and her transition into motherhood. As a new mom of twins, one with significant health concerns, Sarah found herself overwhelmed with even basic tasks like getting both babies in and out of the car. It was a friend who helped her find her way to a doctor and an anxiety disorder that was helped with medication. She also found that returning to her love of zookeeping, in a volunteer capacity, helped anchor her to her old identity. As her family grew, she added reading and writing as creative outlets. Her journey eventually led to writing her first book, Thomas Paine and the Dangerous Word, a picture book biography published by Disney Hyperion in 2018. We’ll conclude the interview next week with a deeper dive into her road to publication, her next book, and what’s keeping her busy these days beyond her writing.
For the 45th episode of Bookin', host Jason Jefferies is joined by Kwame Mbalia, author of Tristan Strong Punches a Hole in the Sky, a Rick Riordan Presents book that is published by our friends at Disney/Hyperion. Topics discussed include what it is like to join a publishing empire that includes Mickey Mouse, Marvel Comics and Star Wars, whether or not comic books are real books, the lyrics to the most annoying song you have ever heard, African American folklore, West African Gods, and much more. Signed copies of Tristan Strong Punches a Hole in the Sky can be preordered in-store or online here (while supplies last).
Kate Hannigan and I discuss her newest novel CAPE and the 2016 Golden Kite award winner, THE DETECTIVE'S ASSISTANT. We do a deep dive on writing and researching historical fiction. Kate gives some outstanding advice for authors doing school visits and a lot of tips for being a more productive writer. She also shares a real-life object lesson on the importance of being nice in an industry as small as publishing. We chat about superheroes and women in history and just generally have a blast talking about writing. Chicago author Kate Hannigan writes fiction and non-fiction for young readers. A former newspaper journalist, she loves listening to people's stories and digging deep into research. Her middle-grade historical fiction "The Detective's Assistant" (Little, Brown) received the 2016 Golden Kite Award for best middle-grade novel and was a California Young Reader Medal nominee. Inspired by the exploits of America's first female detective, Kate Warne, it features nail-biting suspense and exhilarating thrills - along with history around Abraham Lincoln and pre-Civil War America. Kate is also the author of the picture book biography "A Lady Has the Floor: Belva Lockwood Speaks Out for Women's Rights" (Boyds Mills Press), which received four starred reviews, named a Chicago Public Library "Best of the Best" selection, Bank Street College pick for July, A Mighty Girl Best of 2018 Book, Amelia Bloomer Project pick, and a Junior Library Guild Selection. And her three-book cooking caper series "Cupcake Cousins" (Disney/Hyperion) for early middle-grade readers was named to the Illinois READS state list and Chicago Public Library's "Best of the Best" lists.
This week, Michael Moreci joins me for a fantastic conversation about all things geeky. Moreci is the author of Black Star Renegades and its sequel We Are Mayhem, which just came out last month. In a nutshell, the story dares to ask the age-old question: "What would happen if Star Wars and Guardians of the Galaxy had a love child?" And oh boy, is it a fun ride. But Moreci is also a seasoned comic book writer, having written for pretty much every major publisher: DC, Archie, Image, Vault, Dynamite, Dark Horse, Boom!, IDW, and Disney-Hyperion. On this episode, we chat about turning your passion into a career, his two novels with St. Martin's Press, writing comics versus novels, Battlestar Galactica, and of course Star Wars.

Leslie C. Youngblood is an award-winning middle-grade author with Disney Hyperion. Her debut novel Love Like Sky released November 6, 2018. In this My Messy Muse interview Leslie tells us about her favorite character to write and the character with whom she most identifies. She talks about her journey to publication and how her Love Like Sky characters tugged at her to be taken out of her adult fiction work and onto the pages of their own book. Thank goodness Leslie listened! Her debut middle-grade novel Love Like Sky has received numerous accolades and for good reason! Love Like Sky G-baby and her younger sister, Peaches, are still getting used to their "blended-up" family. They live with Mama and Frank out in the suburbs, and they haven't seen their real daddy much since he married Millicent. G-baby misses her best friend back in Atlanta, and is crushed that her glamorous new stepsister, Tangie, wants nothing to do with her. G-baby is so preoccupied with earning Tangie's approval that she isn't there for her own little sister when she needs her most. Peaches gets sick-really sick. Suddenly, Mama and Daddy are arguing like they did before the divorce, and even the doctors at the hospital don't know how to help Peaches get better. It's up to G-baby to put things right. She knows Peaches can be strong again if she can only see that their family's love for her really is like sky. You can find out more about Leslie C. Classroom 2.0 LIVE webinar "Picture Book Month and celebration of Dianne de Las Casas" with Tara Lazar, Katie Davis, John Couret and Paula Naugle. October 14, 2017 Today's webinar is a very special show for us! We have the opportunity to learn all about Picture Book Month from Tara Lazar and Katie Davis, co-founders and renowned children's authors. Picture Book Month was envisioned and founded by Dianne de Las Casas who was our special guest presenter in May, 2017 on Classroom 2.0 LIVE. Sadly, Dianne lost her life in a tragic fire recently and we wanted to honor her legacy by celebrating her life through this featured presentation about Picture Book Month. We will learn about the importance of picture books for students and Picture Book Month. They have created an outstanding Teacher's Guide for participants in Picture Book Month. Our presenters will also share some of their special memories of Dianne de Las Casas including a special visit from John Couret who began writing children’s books because of Dianne’s inspiration. Author Tara Lazar has six picture books in print with many more to come. Her latest title is “7 Ate 9: The Untold Story” from Disney*Hyperion. Next fall look for her illustrated dictionary “500 Words to Bumfuzzle Your Teachers & Bamboozle Your Frenemies”. Tara is the founder of STORYSTORM, a writer’s brainstorming challenge formerly known as Picture Book Idea Month. She is a picture book mentor for We Need Diverse Books and the co-chair of the Rutgers University Council on Children’s Literature annual conference. Katie’s secret superpower is her ability to teach non-techy and tech-fearful writers how to become better business people by building their platforms through social media, video, and creating/building mailing lists. Also known in her niche as one of the first writer entrepreneurs, Katie has created many events and courses for writers, including How to Create Your Author Platform (and Market Your Books without Being Pushy), Video Idiot Boot Camp, and Picture Book Summit (the largest and first online conference of its kind). Her podcast, Brain Burps About Books, is consistently ranked in the top 10 book-related categories. She’s appeared regularly on WTNH and The Huffington Post. She is the director of the Institute of Children’s Literature, which provides accredited writing courses for both adult and children’s books. Katie has been honored to speak everywhere from a maximum security prison, to elementary schools, to university level, including UCONN and Yale, and has keynoted conferences and fundraising galas. You can subscribe to Katie’s YouTube channel at KatieDavis.TV or the #1 podcast in iTunes in Children’s Publishing by going to KatieDavis.com/podcast. Katie Davis’s books, published by Harcourt, S&S, HarperCollins, and Diversion Books, have sold over 755,000 copies, which is why she’s published How to Promote Your Children’s Book, a marketing guide for writers that debuted at #1 on Amazon. http://picturebookmonth.com/ https://taralazar.com/storystorm/ http://katiedavis.com/ https://www.gofundme.com/4b4y0xs (Go Fund Me in Celebration of Dianne de Las Casas)
Joseph A. Gervasi interviews illustrator and writer Greg Pizzoli. Greg is the author of several acclaimed books for children including: The Watermelon Seed (winner of the Theodor Seuss Geisel Award), Templeton Gets His Wish, Tricky Vic, Number One Sam, Good Night Owl, and The Quest For Z. His books are published by Viking Children’s Books (a division of Penguin) and Disney Hyperion. Greg also comes from punk, which has influenced his work in many ways. Greg finds himself in a unique position: writing books that are read and loved by scores of children around the world. With the attention comes a responsibility, though he deftly avoids using his work to moralize to his readers. Greg speaks at schools about forty times a year and uses his ability to communicate with the kids without condescension to encourage creativity. We talk about Greg’s early influences in music and books and how those works shaped him into the writer he is today. Perhaps most crucially, we talk about spreading empathy in dark times. Greg is in a unique position to be able to communicate to the kids who are the future, and what he says about them (and, I’d add, what he helps to foster in them) is an encouraging sign that we’re all looking for and rejoice in seeing. Some seeds one swallows — inadvertently or with intention — when young grow into trees of great and lasting beauty. Greg Pizzoli’s website Photos by Karen Kirchhoff The post LOUD! FAST! PHILLY! While print sales of adult fiction are down in the last decade, the juvenile market – which includes young adult literature or "YA" – has actually gone up 40 percent. In this episode, two YA authors talk about their writing, their audience, their inspirations, and the role that Shakespeare plays in all of it. Molly Booth’s first novel, "Saving Hamlet," was published in 2016 by Disney-Hyperion. It tells the story of an American teenager who time-travels back to Shakespeare’s Globe during the original production of "Hamlet." Ryan North, best known as the creator of Dinosaur Comics, is the author of two titles that take a “Choose Your Own Adventure” approach to Shakespeare. "To Be Or Not To Be" was originally self-published in 2013 and was Kickstarter's most-funded publishing project at the time. His second, "Romeo and/or Juliet," was published by Riverhead Books in 2016. Ryan and Molly are interviewed by Barbara Bogaev. From the Shakespeare Unlimited podcast series. Published November 29, 2016. © Folger Shakespeare Library. All rights reserved. “The Quick Fire of Youth” was produced by Richard Paul. Garland Scott is the associate producer. It was edited by Gail Kern Paster and Esther Ferington. Esther French is the web producer. "The Killer in Me" written by Margot Harrison was published on July 12, 2016 by Disney Hyperion. https://www.amazon.com/Killer-Me-Margot-Harrison-ebook/dp/B01FZLMTT8/ref=pd_rhf_gw_p_img_1?ie=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=SGHKDS7271H00NN4RKZ0 I bought this one a while ago. I think it was the same time that I bought "Learning to swear in America". I believe both of them were on the Goodreads top YA books for July. Here's the synopsis: Hasn't he lived long enough? Why not? I could take him like a thief in the night. This is how the Thief thinks. He serves death, the vacuum, the unknown. He's always waiting. Always there. Seventeen-year-old Nina Barrows knows all about the Thief. She's intimately familiar with his hunting methods: how he stalks and kills at random, how he disposes of his victims' bodies in an abandoned mine in the deepest, most desolate part of a desert. Now, for the first time, Nina has the chance to do something about the serial killer that no one else knows exists. With the help of her former best friend, Warren, she tracks the Thief two thousand miles, to his home turf—the deserts of New Mexico. But the man she meets there seems nothing like the brutal sociopath with whom she's had a disturbing connection her whole life. To anyone else, Dylan Shadwell is exactly what he appears to be: a young veteran committed to his girlfriend and her young daughter. As Nina spends more time with him, she begins to doubt the truth she once held as certain: Dylan Shadwell is the Thief. She even starts to wonder . . . what if there is no Thief? From debut author Margot Harrison comes a brilliantly twisted psychological thriller that asks which is more terrifying: the possibility that your nightmares are real . . . or the possibility that they begin and end with you? The Kindle preview includes the first four chapters. I'm going to read you the first two, which ends up being about 19 pages. I try to read the first couple chapters and put down my thoughts before reading the synopsis, so I can get an honest feeling for whether I would read on based on those pages. Here's what I got before I read the blurb on the Amazon page. Nina is a girl who dreams a serial killer's life. Plenty of opportunity for conflict and character developement. She's on a life and death mission to save a couple who lives a hundred plus miles away. She's smart enough to realize no one will believe her--the woman she called certainly didn't. The author's writing is crisp and clear, her characterization is solid, and her use of dialog is effective. I want to read on initially to see how she does with firing the .38 and secondly to see if she is able to get to upstate New Yord to help the older couple. I believe that these two conflicts are just an introduction to the story and my hopes are that this will ramp up into a solid thriller. I had an interview with an author scheduled tonight, but she had to cancel for her son's back to school night. Unless I can reconnect with her in the next couple days, it will be another first chapter review next week. thanks for listening. We'll see you next week.
