It is a privilege to welcome actress and singer Lauren Marcus to The Jake's Take with Jacob Elyachar Podcast. Stephen Mosher of BroadwayWorld best described Lauren: "Take all the female rock stars you have known and loved and roll them up into one. Take, for instance, Linda Ronstadt's soul, Tina Turner's sexiness, Pat Benatar's grit, Debbie Harry's defiance, and all the Go-Go's playfulness. Mix and bake at 350, then frost with a five-inch thick layer of The Icing of Originality, and you've got Lauren Marcus." Hailed as "fabulous" by The Boston Globe and a "powerhouse" by The Chicago Tribune, Lauren is a multi-hyphenate actor, singer, and writer whose work has been seen on stage and screen. She has appeared in countless regional theatrical productions, including Company (with Aaron Tveit; Amy), Fiddler on the Roof (Tzeitel), Hello, Dolly! (with Tovah Feldshuh; Ermengarde), two productions of Little Shop of Horrors (Audrey) and Merrily We Roll Along (Mary Flynn). She also was part of four world premieres, including Beatsville (Carla), Love in Hate Nation (Miss Asp), Pregnancy Pact (Jenn), and Punk Rock Girl! (Patricia). She also appeared in the Off-Broadway productions of Sarah Silverman's The Bedwetter (multiple roles) and White Girl in Danger (Meagan). Lauren was also part of Be More Chill's journey. She portrayed Brooke Lohst in the regional, off-Broadway, and Broadway productions. Lauren starred as Donna in the Netflix adaption of the Lin-Manuel Miranda-directed Tick, Tick…BOOM! Lauren also performed across New York City's famous music venues, including 54Below and Rockwood Music Hall, where she had multiple residencies and had a party of 12 performers on stage. While she considers her live shows – half-party/half-therapy, Lauren's sound is inspired by the effervescent melodies of 1960s pop, the lyrical poetry of 1970s troubadours, and the electric edge of contemporary indie rock…and usually includes a healthy dose of theatricality. Her sound is at once a throwback and entirely forward-thinking. In this edition of The Jake's Take with Jacob Elyachar Podcast, Lauren Marcus spoke about being part of Be More Chill's entire circle journey, pulling off a quick recovery on stage while performing in Company with the late Stephen Sondheim in attendance and her latest single: "Skinny & Blonde."

The Dead Milkmen were odd ducks in Philadelphia's 1980s hardcore scene. They played really fast, but with a clean guitar channel, and wrote satirical--often strange and very imaginative--lyrics. It felt like they were almost a ska band. And in fact, they did have a few ska songs in their set like "If You Love Somebody, Set Them On Fire," "Little Man In My Head," "Gorilla Girl," and a cover of The Specials' "A Message To You, Rudy." Today, we bring on Dead Milkmen guitarist Joe Genaro. We talk about the band's relationship to ska, Joe's love for The Specials, The English Beat, Philly locals The Hooters, Operation Ivy and what it was like to play a LIVE 105 radio event with Skankin' Pickle (Along with Duran Duran and Carter The Unstoppable Sex Machine.) We discuss their recent cover of Heaven 17's "(We Don't Need No) Fascist Groove Thang," which they turned into a ska song, the influential role of Dead Kennedys' In God We Trust, Inc, Joe's love for Dr. Demento and Weird Al (And how excited he was when he heard himself played on the Dr. Demento show), Why they mentioned drummer Jon Wurster in the song "Stewart," and we breakdown the recording of Big Lizard In My Backyard, and discuss some of the weirder promotional events Dead Milkmen did when "Punk Rock Girl" broke, including a bonkers performance on Club MTV with Downtown Julie Brown. Plus we discuss the band's excellent new album, Quaker City Quiet Pills, which was released on June 9th. Support the show
Currently making his Broadway debut as Francois Du Bois in "& Juliet", Philippe Arroyo takes us through his personal journey. The actor shares what he does to recharge, including having alone time and reading plays at the famed Drama Bookshop. He looks back on why he got into theatre and growing as a person as he surrounds himself with different people, becoming more honest on stage—quite a parallel with Francois. While Philippe shares that he's exactly where he wanted to be today, he's aware that life can be incredibly unpredictable and uncontrollable at the same time, and that it's one of the beauties of it. He recalls getting replaced in the past, auditioning for Francois and getting the call that he got the role and his standout pinch-me moment which is seeing Lin-Manuel Miranda in the audience. As a kid, Philippe wanted to be a writer, and now that he's starting to make a name as an actor, he plans to pursue writing as well. And with his talent and his need/want to always be better in what he does, there's definitely no stopping Philippe. Philippe Arroyo is an actor and a Carnegie Mellon graduate whose past includes the first national tour of “Aladdin”, Joe Iconis' “Punk Rock Girl”, and the first national tour of “Into the Woods” among others. He also made an appearance in the series “Evil” and “Uncoupled”. Philippe currently making his Broadway debut playing Francois DuBois in the runaway hit “& Juliet”. Joe Genaro is a musician and songwriter, best known for the punk rock group The Dead Milkmen. The Dead Milkmen formed in 1983, evolving out of a home-recording project with a mythological back story that Genaro had begun in 1979. The members of the group regularly employed pseudonyms, and Genaro most frequently called himself "Joe Jack Talcum" (stemming from the character of Jack Talcum that Genaro had imagined as the leader of the band in their mythology) in the context of the group, although he also used the pseudonyms "Butterfly Fairweather" and "Jasper Thread" on certain records. The band's debut LP, Big Lizard in My Backyard was released in 1985, and their initial twelve-year career saw some college radio and MTV success, notably surrounding singles "Bitchin' Camaro" (1986) and "Punk Rock Girl" (1988). Genaro acted as the group's guitarist, co-lead vocalist and co-songwriter, and occasionally played keyboards and piano. The band originally disbanded in 1995 but have reunited since.
Philadelphia's Dead Milkmen hold a special place in American punk rock. Relying heavily on absurdist humour rather than ferocity, the band found a place in the hearts of many with underground hits like "Punk Rock Girl" and "Bitchin' Camaro". Eventually the band slowed way down and the guys went back to "normal" with the occasional reunion show, but as frontman Rodney Anonymous shows us, that caustic sense of rebellion has never left. Here Rodney tells us the band's story, his feelings on performing, the music he's into, and where they go from here. Don't remember the last time I laughed this hard. Enjoy! www.deadmilkmen.com www.patreon.com/thehustlepod

In Episode 30 of The Hottest Party On TV podcast, Club MTV dancer Christian Liendo stops by to talk about his time on MTV's flagship dance show. An avid New York City nightclub-goer, Christian didn't aspire to be on TV but suddenly found himself cast on the show after impressing the show's casting director during a hilarious night out at the Palladium. Christian also holds the distinction of being one of the dancers in the mosh pit for the infamous Dead Milkmen performance of "Punk Rock Girl" on Club MTV. He unpacks how that situation unfolded from his point of view and the moment it devolved from kickass anarchist fun into an unfortunate uncomfortable moment. Plus, I got to publicly thank Christian for the gift he organized for me from himself and the other Club MTV dancers. Episode produced by Esteban Vargas. While it's true that Jim Walewander would be viewed as "norm-core" by today's alternative standards, the 1998 Topps Podcast does feel that unironically listening to Dead Milkmen in 2021 classifies one as "weird." Welcome to the very first I Wanna Party With Bob Trivia Challenge of 2021! The subject of this terrifying trivia is the paranormal, haunted places and haunted/cursed objects, to be specific. Here’s a couple of examples - Where did the Dead Milkmen film part of the music video for “Punk Rock Girl”, that is also a very haunted former prison? What does the name of the popular slumber party distraction, Ouija, mean? There’s even a question about a fictional cursed or haunted doll from the OG Twilight Zone series! This one is not to be missed, mostly because of the cast of ghoulishly great paranormal professionals that have assembled to answer the questions. Let me introduce them! Amanda Paulson of the Pretty F’n Spooky Blog & YouTube Channel, Cherise Williams, the terrific tarot reading investigator and YouTube Channel host, Ivy and Hannah of The Ghoul’s Trip Blog and finally, Josh and Tamara of The Hexfiles Podcast. These good people are all amazing investigators, practitioners of witchcraft, crazy about cryptids and the finest folks you’ll find in a haunted house, or anywhere, really. The musical selections of the episode are “Haunted Town” by Nightbirds and a cover of best Misfits song written about me, “Attitude”.
SUPPORT ME ON PATREON WATCH MUSIC is not a GENRE VIDEOS and MORE Philadelphia – my old hometown – has a rich musical history, and every few years there's a buzz about the scene there (NOW? - look up Mannequin Pussy). When I was a teen, the Philly area had some major acts either making their name then (The Hooters, Joan Jett, Robert Hazard & the Heroes) or starting out on their way to major success later (Boys II Men, Will Smith, The Roots, Live). I was immersed in the present and the possible. And like most of music fandom in Philly, I had a hunger for good music of any kind. The Dead Milkmen are from Philly. Their first four albums were huge in my life during high school and college. I saw them several times live, usually in and around South Street. I loved how they were/are both punk AND meta-punk, killing the punk/surf-punk style while commenting on and sending it up at the same time, and throwing in whatever other genres (dance, pop, folk, hard rock) they felt like using. They had the punk “disdain” for hippies down from the get-go, even though by then the either/or division was old news. So they made fun of hippies AND made fun of making fun of hippies. Punk and meta-punk. They've been through tons of ups & downs: their initial cult-to-chart years; their declining major label years; their hiatus and the tragic suicide of Dave Blood; and their reforming (yay!) a little over a decade ago. Their music from the last five years is better than it's ever been. Like Philly (and me), they don't quit. They're always ready to come back for more, whether as underdogs, veterans, or stars. Like them, I've always been both directly in the mix and way out of it. It means my/our music is often on trend AND observational about what's going on, and has lots of genre-hopping & experimentation. This is why our music is both so vibrant & so hard to pin down. What I got from the Milkmen (among other bands) was what I call “irreverent reverence” – honoring or working within a style, but not feeling beholden to it, even to the point of commenting on or poking at it. Lyrics can be outwardly or subtly funny, openly or cleverly jabbing. Here are two recent examples that fit all that: REC - "The Garden” (from the album Sympathy for the Weird) REC - “Xmiss” (from the album The Sunshine Seminar) Favorites are: BLIimBY: “Beach Song”, “Big Lizard”, “Bitchin' Camaro”, “Right Wing Pigeons”; EYP: “Beach Party Vietnam”, “The Thing that Only Eats Hippies”; virtually all of Bucky Fellini; Beelzebubba: “Brat in the Frat”, “I Walk the Thinnest Line”, “Punk Rock Girl”, “Smokin' Banana Peels”. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/nick-dematteo/support

Ali Castellini got her 97X gig by accident, when a fellow Miami student phoned her early one Friday morning and asked her to do the weather forecast on the Breakfast Club. She wound up spending a few years on the air at 97X in the early-to-mid 90s before moving on to a station in Virginia Beach, VA, then hosting the nationally syndicated radio show "Todays Women" and later working as an on-air host and producer for World Cafe at WXPN in Philly. Now she's "corrupting minds" (her words) as a comms professor at Temple. We chat with Ali about all the lessons she learned during her radio days... as well as Matchbox cars, Dick Clark and Lenny Kravitz.
#TWIT80s - Ep. 8/October Week 4: A 1983 flop is brought back to life this week in 1984 all due to the Power Of HBO! PLUS - Was early MTV really "racist" or just.... rock? The nearly forgotten top 10 Bruce Springsteen hit that bumped "Pink Cadillac" off the "Born In The USA" album, the 1986 stiff referenced in the Dead Milkmen's MTV classic, "Punk Rock Girl". Dean Sabatino aka Dean Clean/May 19, 2014 Joseph A. Gervasi interviews Dean Sabatino, better known under his nom-de-Milkmen Dean Clean. Dean was born in Camden, NJ, but grew up in a rural area outside Philadelphia. By the early 1980s, he was in the two-person band Narthex and playing shows in Philadelphia, including at the (in)famous Hot Club. Upon the demise of Narthex, Sabatino joined The Dead Milkmen as their first and only drummer. We talk about Dean’s young life (where he was a fun of progressive rock!) and his incremental move to Philadelphia, where he ultimately lived with the three other members of the band for some years. The Dead Milkmen’s surprise hit song “Punk Rock Girl” earned them play on MTV and got the band a Club MTV in a performance (with a bemused and abused Downtown Julie Brown) that must be seen to be believed (but for the benefit of those who haven’t seen it, Dean discusses the performance in detail). Since Dean was the last remaining living original member of the band I needed to interview, we also talk a bit about the sad demise of Dave Schulthise (aka Dave Blood), the bass player in The Dead Milkmen who took his own life in 2004 at the age of 47. Despite breaking up for several years, The Dead Milkmen are back and continue to record and perform. Dean Sabatino is genial and thoughtful throughout the interview and I know any fan of the band or individuals curious about Philadelphia’s underground music scene of the 1980s will enjoy my talk with him. Rodney Linderman aka Rodney Anonymous /September 28, 2013 Joseph A. Gervasi interviews Rodney Linderman aka Rodney Anonymous of The Dead Milkmen (and many other bands and musical projects). At nearly 89-minutes, this is not the longest interview in the series. I can assure you, however, that there are more words said in this interview than in any other, and perhaps in all of them combined. Rodney loves to talk-talk-talkand he has many strong opinions-opinions-opinions — and that’s why Philadelphia loves him! A complete catalogue of what Rodney discusses in this interview would be impossible for me to detail without my fingers falling off, but here’s a bit of what you’ll hear: Rodney’s young life in a working class steel town, the early days (aka “The Fictitious Years”) of The Dead Milkmen, how the Dead Milkmen became a real band, the unlikely hit that was the song “Punk Rock Girl” and how the band sabotaged their appearance on Club MTV, the state of music criticism and the music scene in general, twee beardy bands and the undue attention paid to them, why drugs are bad, some well-known folks Rodney hates, etc. Get ready for an aural speedball! P.S. For the record, I love the breezy ’60s harmony pop band The Association. The Dead Milkmen website The post LOUD! FAST! PHILLY! Joe Genaro of The Dead Milkmen/March 7, 2013 Joseph A. Gervasi interviews Joe Genaro, also known as Joe Jack Talcum, Jack Talcum, Jasper Thread, Butterfly Fairweather, Butterfly Joe, and Jonk Provuc, of Philadelphia’s most popular punk/pop band, The Dead Milkmen. They talk about Joe’s upbringing, his early love of music like The Byrds and The Beatles, meeting fellow Milkman Rodney Anonymous, the forming of the band, the popularity that came to a head with the song “Punk Rock Girl” (which Joe sang), causing chaos on Club MTV, touring, the suicide of band member Dave Schulthise, and Joe’s other bands over the years.
