Hang onto your slipcases because Blake Howard (One Heat Minute Productions) and special guest Sean Burns (film critic) will discuss the greatness of the departed Gene Hackman in the special CRITERION COLLECTION 4K release of NIGHT MOVES.Night MovesArthur Penn's haunting neonoir reimagines the hard-boiled detective film for the disillusioned, paranoid 1970s. In one of his greatest performances, Gene Hackman oozes world-weary cynicism as a private investigator whose search for an actress's missing daughter (Melanie Griffith) leads him from the Hollywood Hills to the Florida Keys, where he is pulled into a sordid family drama and a sinister conspiracy he can hardly grasp. Bolstered by Alan Sharp's genre-scrambling script and Dede Allen's elliptical editing, the daringly labyrinthine Night Moves is a defining work of post-Watergate cinema—a silent scream of existential dread and moral decay whose legend has only grown with time.4K UHD + BLU-RAY SPECIAL EDITION FEATURESNew 4K digital restoration, with uncompressed monaural soundtrackOne 4K UHD disc of the film presented in Dolby Vision HDR and one Blu-ray with the film and special featuresNew audio commentary by Matthew Asprey Gear, author of Moseby ConfidentialNew audio interview with actor Jennifer WarrenInterview with director Arthur Penn from a 1975 episode of Cinema ShowcaseInterview with Penn from the 1995 documentary Arthur Penn: A Love Affair with FilmThe Day of the Director, a behind-the-scenes featuretteTrailerEnglish subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearingPLUS: An essay by critic Mark HarrisNew cover by Greg ManchessSean BurnsSean Burns is a film critic for WBUR's Arts & Culture and a contributing writer at North Shore Movies and Crooked Marquee. The annual SATELLITE conference in Washington, D.C. is the gravitational pull of the commercial space & satellite industry. Like every other conference, media outlet and association that gathers the global community, SATELLITE has undergone changes over the past five years that reflect the growth and wonderfully chaotic direction of the space & satellite industry. Jeffrey Hill, Executive Editor of Via Satellite and Executive Chairman of SATELLITE 2025, has taken a breather from conference planning to talk to SSPI's Lou Zacharilla about what we can expect this March in Washington, D.C. SATELLITE has adapted to many changes in conference structure and will be bringing exciting new features to the conference this year, such as the "Happy Hour Rocket Show" on the Exhibition floor. Jeff and Lou also discuss the "anxiety, both good and bad" running through the industry as it faces change after change and what we hope to see in the future. Jeffrey Hill serves as the Executive Editor of Via Satellite and chair of the annual SATELLITE conference and exhibition in Washington D.C. He is also the host and producer of Via Satellite's On Orbit podcast and the host of Via Satellite's technology webcast series. Over the course of his nearly 15-year career, Jeff has become one of the most connected people in the space and satellite industry. He has interviewed prominent space and technology leaders such as Elon Musk, Jeff Bezos, Richard Branson, Bea Perez, Emily Calandrelli and Charles Bolden, as well as hundreds of policy makers, investors, influencers and executives from all over the world. A native of Philadelphia, he began his career as web editor for Next City magazine, while covering city hall politics for Philadelphia Weekly and Philadelphia Inquirer. He also previously served as a director of communications at Drexel University. He now lives in Bethesda, Maryland with his wife and son, two beagles and piles of books, musical instruments and knick-knacks from countless industry events and conferences. He enjoys making Slack Emojis of his co-workers.

The only thing better than talking to one Sean is when you add a second Shawn to the mix. Returning to the podcast this week, I'm thrilled to share this recent wonderfully rollicking, quick-witted, story, & insight-filled conversation I had with two of my dearest friends: the veteran Boston-based WBUR film critic Sean Burns & the award-winning internationally bestselling novelist S.A. Cosby. Zooming in to cover some of their (sometimes divisive) crime movie favorites not called THE GODFATHER, for this episode, we agreed to take a closer look at MENACE II SOCIETY, THE FUNERAL, BLOW, & WE OWN THE NIGHT, but then wound up celebrating, critiquing, & shouting out several other under-discussed crime movie faves as well. The perfect accompaniment to your summer travels or long commute to work, listen with a notebook handy to write down some of these great movies. Sean Burns' Bio: A film critic for WBUR's Arts & Culture and a contributing writer at North Shore Movies and Crooked Marquee, he was Philadelphia Weekly's lead film critic from 1999-2013 and worked as contributing editor at the Improper Bostonian from 2006-2014. His reviews, interviews, and essays have also appeared in Metro, The Village Voice, Rolling Stone, The Boston Herald, Nashville Scene, Time Out New York, Philadelphia City Paper, and RogerEbert.com. A graduate of New York University's Tisch School of the Arts, Burns was a recurring guest on the late David Brudnoy's WBZ 1030 AM radio show, and in 2002, received an award for Excellence in Criticism from the Greater Philadephia Society of Professional Journalists. His writing has been called "jocular but serious, more like a 1940s daily reporter pounding out columns on a manual typewriter than a typical twenty-first-century navel-gazing film critic." Meanwhile, his sisters still tell him that he "swears too much and drives like an old lady." S.A. Cosby's Bio: S. A. Cosby is an Anthony Award-winning writer from Southeastern Virginia. He is the author of the New York Times bestseller Razorblade Tears and Blacktop Wasteland, which won the Los Angeles Times Book Prize, was a New York Times Notable Book, and was named a best book of the year by NPR, The Guardian, and Library Journal, among others. His latest award-winning bestselling novel is All the Sinner's Bleed. When not writing, S.A. Cosby is an avid hiker, cinephile, and chess player. It's always the greatest joy to spend the last few episodes of a phenomenally busy season just chatting about movies hangout-style with some of my closest friends & this year was no exception. I'm so lucky that in the middle of award-season deadlines, one of my funniest cinephile pals, the great Sean Burns joined me for two evenings after Thanksgiving, first to discuss CARLITO'S WAY alongside S.A. Cosby & William Boyle, & then logging back onto Zoom the next night for his latest solo episode on four of director Robert Altman's many terrific under-discussed films: BREWSTER MCCLOUD, THE CAINE MUTINY COURT MARTIAL, COOKIE'S FORTUNE, & THE COMPANY.This is the final installment of Watch With Jen for 2023. It's been an incredibly ambitious & exciting year for the podcast. The show reached a few great milestones I never thought I'd achieve when I launched it in the winter of 2020 & I want to thank you for your listenership & support as I continue to learn & grow with each passing year. I'll be taking a handful of weeks off to rest, recharge, & start recording episodes I'm truly excited to bring you in Season 4, but don't worry because you'll still be finding brand new shows in your Watch With Jen feed. Launching next week in both my feed & our co-producer Blake Howard's One Heat Minute Productions, you'll begin exploring our years-in-the-making passion project MIDNIGHT RUN-THROUGH, which is devoted to the 1988 movie MIDNIGHT RUN. It was a joy to create & I know you'll love it!Note: Originally, I was going to wait to upload this episode until the end of next week but this year has been super stressful for so many people in my life (including myself) & I want to make sure you have enough to distract & delight you during your winter break &/or holiday travels. Wishing you & yours a peaceful & relaxing week & the happiest 2024.Sean's Bio:A film critic for WBUR's Arts & Culture and a contributing writer at North Shore Movies and Crooked Marquee, he was Philadelphia Weekly's lead film critic from 1999-2013 and worked as contributing editor at the Improper Bostonian from 2006-2014. Christmas is often thought of as the season of joy. There are twinkly lights, joyous carols, and delightful sweets around every corner... but for many, this season brings about different emotions: frustration, loneliness, or sadness. If you aren't feeling so "sparkly" and joyful this season, you aren't alone. Jesus has come to meet you right where you are... in the middle of this AND that. Today, my friend, Nancy Hicks is here to share with us about holding both grief AND hope. Nancy lost her son, David, at the age of 28, about 18 months ago. She vulnerably shares with us about her grieving process, the questions she's asked of God, and the thread of hope she's clinging to. Nancy Hicks is a dynamic, relevant Christian speaker, teacher and writer whose passion is to ignite women to confidence and power in Christ. Nancy has been in professional communication her entire career. From singing on the main stage in concert and musical theater across Canada to spokesperson on QVC, she has used these gifts of communication to serve her local church through preaching, teaching and leading. After earning her master's degree in theology from Palmer Seminary of Eastern University, Nancy launched her international speaking ministry, Nancy Hicks Live. Today, Nancy inspires women by equipping them to be grounded in Jesus Christ while wrestling with the often uncomfortable intersection of faith, organized religion and the realities of this world. The author of Meant to Live: Living in Light of the Good News, Nancy has been featured on Hallmark's Home & Family, The Jesus Calling Podcast, Trinity Broadcast Network, 100 Huntley Street, as well as in Relevant Magazine, Propel Women, Publishers Weekly, The Christian Post, Christian News Journal, Philadelphia Weekly and more. She and her husband, Cam, have been married since 1990 and have two sons—Aaron, who is married to his darling wife, Rachel, and their beloved David who now lives in heaven after a long, courageous battle with cancer. In addition to astute insights and Nicholson storytelling, you'll hear the hilarious Burns bring out my feistier side the deeper we get into the episode. His writing has been called "jocular but serious, more like a 1940's daily reporter pounding out columns on a manual typewriter than a typical twenty-first-century navel-gazing film critic." Meanwhile, his sisters still tell him that he "swears too much and drive like an old lady."Logo: KateGabrielle.comTheme Music: Solo Acoustic Guitar by Jason Shaw, Free Music ArchiveOriginally Posted on Patreon (9/9/22) here: https://www.patreon.com/posts/71745247

Today on the podcast, our summer series collaboration with Greater Philadelphia Cultural Alliance's “RE-START Initiative”, continues with Tiny Dynamite where we explore how the organization has fared during the pandemic. Here is my interview with KC MacMillan, Producing Artistic Director of Tiny Dynamite. It is the mission of Tiny Dynamite to offer audiences new ways to experience theater and artists new ways to create it. We present high-quality plays at modest ticket prices, in an environment that is intimate, social, joyful, and welcoming. Our principal project is A Play, a Pie and a Pint®, a form of theater that breaks down perceptions that the arts are only for special occasions: we offer inventive short plays, in unexpected spaces, served with food and beverages.KC MacMillanPRODUCING ARTISTIC DIRECTORKathryn MacMillan (she/her) is a Philadelphia-based theater director and arts leader who has led Tiny Dynamite since 2017. Jayson Musson has a unique status in the art world: he has the persona and perspective of an outsider, but he's also something of an artist's artist. Originally from the Bronx, Musson got his creative start in Philadelphia in the 2000s, creating cerebral, satirical street art; penning a column for the Philadelphia Weekly called "Black Like Me"; and performing in the cult hip-hop group Plastic Little, which put out songs like "I'm Not a Thug," "Rap O'Clock," and "Miller Time." Musson again popped up unexpectedly onto the radar in 2010 with "Art Thoughtz," a DIY YouTube series that immediately became a treasured reference in art school and art media. It starred Musson in the persona of "Hennessy Youngman," fusing the styles of art theory lecture and Def Comedy Jam, monologuing about everything from concepts of beauty to Damien Hirst's tendency to make faces in press pics. It was fresh enough to surprise, and knowing enough to be a hit. Musson has worked in a variety of styles in the last decade, from painting to sculpture to children's books to mix tapes. He's back this month with a very different spin on art education at Philadelphia's Fabric Workshop and Museum. Titled "His History of Art," the new show has a characteristically offbeat premise. It takes the form of a combination of sitcom and PBS edutainment, with Musson starring as Jay, explaining the value of art history to Ollie, a rabbit played by a puppet. And there are lots of other surreal detours along the way. Ben Davis, Artnet News's national art critic and a Jayson Musson fan, recently had a chance to talk to the artist about his unusual career and the idea behind his new riff on art history.
