Mai 2015 in Schloß Holte-Stukenbrock hielt.
Hogan's Heroes – a comedy spy WW II TV series “Hogan's Heroes” was a comedy series in the US from 1965 to 1971. But it was a spy, espionage and sabotage show as well – with plenty of violence. It was based on a group of prisoners of war in World War II who were assigned to Stalag 13. On this show, spy missions rule! Decoding this show, we will show you why! Dan and Tom tunnel their way into this series by looking at the characters, the actors who played them, and many of their missions. And yes, “Hogan's Heroes” is a bit dated with some of its portrayal of Germans and women, but we still think it holds up today. We talk about the German roots of some of the key people involved with the series and what Werner Klemperer required of the show for him to take on the role of Colonel Klink. Klemperer was born in Germany and he had a specific demand. We also include clips from the show to highlight our points and bring fun to it as well. With the lunatics running the asylum, there are some classic lines in the series. Some Hogan's Heroes Influencers Some of the episodes we decode have ties to real-world events or other movies. For instance, did you listen to our episode THE HEROES OF TELEMARK-DECODED? Well, one of the “Hogan's Heroes” episodes had roots in the underlying mission portrayed in the movie THE HEROES OF TELEMARK. We tell you which one. Another episode of Hogan's Heroes had similarities to the 1946 Sherlock Holmes movie, DRESSED TO KILL. Other episodes paid homage to TV game shows that were popular at the time. And what did synthetic fuel have to do with the war and this series? So, take a listen to hear about these and many more fun facts about this comedy spy series. Tell us what you think Have you watched “Hogan's Heroes”? What did you think? Is it a spy series? Let us know your thoughts, ideas for future episodes, and what you thought of this episode. When Jason reached out and asked me, retired and also dead crooner, Dean Martin, to say a few words about Stalag 17, I was confused, as I had nothin' to do with the picture, jack. I wasn't even in the service for very long, myself. Hernia, they told me. It was at that point that he got real hot and some words flew around and we settled things with a bottle of the good stuff. Eventually, I was able to sneak out after agreeing to write this. I'm nothing if not a man of my word. So, buddy-o, lemme set you straight: this is a heck of a picture. What ain't straight was Billy Holden's driving, which we saw to tragic effect. That ain't funny, that's just a fact, jack. So, watch it and listen to this podcast thing about it? I don't care. I did my part. I'm off to the ghost bar, baby. Next week: It's gonna get biblical! Questions? Comments? Suggestions? The song “Replacement” on A CHORUS OF DISAPPROVAL's “Truth Gives Wings to Strength” LP is something of a cause célebre in the hardcore scene. Released in 1990, this song seemed to come with its own set of history behind it that was completely separate from the band itself. CHORUS Guitarist Jeff Banks explains this version presented here, culled from a practice demo that, despite saying it was VISUAL DISCRIMINATION, was really a pre-cursor to the eventual Visual Discrimination of Nemesis Records lore... “Jeff Simmerman, Dan Fisher and Derek Alford had this Peace Punk band out of Lakewood, CA with a working title of Visual Discrimination. Simmerman got kicked out of Artesia high school and started going to Cerritos and we got to talking in auto shop. Steve Winders, Tim Sawyer and I were in Dead Tradition with Tim's brother Byron and some guy named Morgan. Morgan was a great drummer, but I wasn't his favorite guy. Jeff Simmerman invited me to his house to jam. Turned out Derek Alford was just learning and couldn't really play the guitar, so it became Fisher and Simmerman and me. We got this kid David Hauck to sing a couple practices. I had written a few riffs, and Replacement was written at this time. I was such a huge Stalag 13 fan that I was trying to channel the song In Control through Replacement. When Dead Tradition kind of fizzled, I told Fisher and Simmerman that I have these two guys that could probably round out the lineup nicely. That's when Sawyer and Winders came into the fold. We played as that lineup for a little while and then the band split up into two factions. Fisher, Sawyer and Simmerman started a true Peace Punk band called Non-fiction with a guy named George Contreras from Cerritos. They recorded a demo and it was great. Very Discharge meets Iconoclast and locals peace punk band 5th Column. Steve Winders and I started a Straight Edge band in the mold of Uniform Choice called Denial with Steve's brother Jeff and some guy in my biology class named Rory Cowan. We recorded a 12-song demo, and Replacement in its most polished form was on that demo. After about a year, both bands fizzled. We decided to reform and combined Nonfiction and Denial, including the songs, etc. We needed a bass player, and there was this kid named Junior Beloki, who was in a history class where I was the teacher assistant. So I asked him if he would be interested and he was. So he became the bass player. That was the lineup for the demo and the first record. I always thought the Non-fiction songs were stronger than the Denial songs I had written. Replacement was cut and relegated. Once Chorus got going, many of the old Cerritos Straight Edge crew were calling for old Denial songs. The people on that montage on the Chorus record calling for Replacement are Gary Hornberger, Boxer Hardison, my dad, my mom, my high school basketball coach Don Saul and one of my old City of Cerritos supervisors Ernest Vital. He was the guy we all picked up the phrase 'Dud' from when we thought something was weak. We all still say to this day." William Holden was a legendary actor whose career started during the Golden Age of Hollywood, starring in such classics as Sunset Boulevard and Stalag 17. He was rich. He was famous. And he was a drunk! After his career fizzled, he drank himself into oblivion at his oceanfront Santa Monica condo. One night, after a few bottles of vodka, he slipped, fell, and died at the age of 63. Director Billy Wilder called it "a lousy fade-out of a great guy." In this episode, Sean and James review the 1953 film Stalag 17, which tells the story of a group of American airmen confined with 40,000 prisoners in a World War II German prisoner-of-war camp "somewhere on the Danube". The film focuses on one particular barracks, where the men come to suspect that one of their number is an informant. This show is part of the Spreaker Prime Network, if you are interested in advertising on this podcast, contact us at https://www.spreaker.com/show/4747725/advertisement
This week in physical media, Peter Sobczynski joins Erik Childress to talk up a pair of Larry McMurtry tales. Shirley MacLaine and Nicolas Cage are in two of this week's selections and one of them together. Erik gets one of his titles from the Why-Is-This-Not-On-Blu-Ray series and Peter looks back at the time Nicolas Roeg went to Showtime with Mimi Rogers and Bryan Brown. A crowd-pleasing underdog tale gets a director's cut in 4K as does a Billy Wilder film with Peter Graves in prison (not a Turkish one.) There is stop-motion Christmas for the kids and a stage adaptation of Miyazaki. In this episode I catch up with Graham Coult and Charles Henderson who recently completed a bikepacking trip on the escape route taken by Graham's grandfather from a WWII POW camp - Stalag 18a. The idea for this route came to Graham when he discovered the original map his Grandfather used to escape from the prison camp in Austria. The thin blue line traced on the map formed the basis of the 2000km route, and Graham and Charles set out to see what this experience would entail. It should be pointed out that Charles is not a cyclist - he only got the bicycle he would use for the trip just a few days before setting off!It was the first time either of them had taken on a multi-day bikepacking adventure and as they discovered during the trip, this route would test them in ways they hadn't considered. Busy roads and cold, wet weather meant they had to grit through some grim conditions on this reflective journey. It became apparent that teamwork camaraderie were the elements which would get them to the finish in Thessaloniki. I really enjoyed chatting with both Graham and Charles who also used this trip as a fundraiser. You can learn more and donate to their charities here. This week, Arthur, Julian and Steve discuss the amazing film career of writer/director Billy Wilder who specialized in comedy (The Apartment, One, Two, Three, Some Like it Hot, Stalag 17), but also dove into drama (Witness for the Prosecution, Sunset Blvd), war (Five Graves to Cairo) film noir (Double Indemnity), historical adventure (The Spirit of St. Louis), and thriller (The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes). We want to hear from you! Feedback is always welcome. POW movies might seem like a dime a dozen now, but 70 years ago they weren't common. And POW comedies? They really weren't a thing. Of course, The Great Escape set an iconic standard a decade after Stalag 17 that was hard to match...and it doesn't match it. Billy Wilder's film is filled with hijinks and physical comedy, but not even the brilliant funnyman was able to make something that's actually got a lot of laughs. It's solid work, at least, and it's an effective mystery about just who is the Nazi rat embedded with our heroes. By design, William Holden never clicks with the other actors, which makes his Oscar-winning performance quite effective.
