This week we talk our favorite splits, which are single records shared by two or more bands. It's sort of like when you can't afford to live like a human being in this country anymore and you have to share one space between many people because the powers that be just want to swallow everything for themselves and watch everyone else rot in the fucking streets. On this week's Right Profile:Secret WorldThe Sissy BoysSome of our favorite splits:Pg. 99 and Majority RuleCoalesce and The Get Up KidsPelican and Playing EnemyHot Water Music and LeatherfaceGo It Alone and Blue MondayThe Nerve Agents and Kill Your IdolsShai Hulud and Another VictimRancid and NOFXGoldfinger and Reel Big FishThe Ataris and Useless I.D.88 Fingers Louie and Kid Dynamite Check Us Out:PatreonSixth and Center PublishingMusical Attribution:Licensed through NEOSounds.“5 O'Clock Shadow,” “America On the Move,” “Baby You Miss Me,” “Big Fat Gypsy,” “Bubble Up,” “C'est Chaud,” “East River Blues,” “The Gold Rush,” “Gypsy Fiddle Jazz,” “Here Comes That Jazz,” “I Wish I Could Charleston,” “I Told You,” “It Feels Like Love To Me,” “Little Tramp,” “Mornington Crescent,” “No Takeaways.”

Vancouver pop-punk supergroup Precursor is set to ignite the music scene once again with their latest full-length album, "Thick & Thin," scheduled for release on August 9th, 2024. Known for their eclectic blend of punk, skatepunk, softcore, melodic hardcore, and pop punk influences, Precursor promises fans an exhilarating musical journey reminiscent of bands like The Story So Far, Kid Dynamite, Piebald, A Wilhelm Scream, Daggermouth, Carpenter, and Gob. Originally conceived as a defiant response to the prevailing indie trends, Precursor emerged as a side project uniting talents from Stuart McKillop (Daggermouth/End This Week with Knives), Daniel Sioui (Carpenter/All State Champion), Andy Lewis (The Fullblast), and Blaine McNamee (In Bear Country). Drawing inspiration from the hardcore punk ethos of the 1990s, the band quickly garnered attention for their high-energy performances and unapologetically raw attitude. "Thick & Thin" represents a significant milestone for Precursor, capturing the essence of their evolution over the years. Recorded, mixed, and mastered by Stuart McKillop at Rain City Mastering, with drums tracked at Rain City Recorders, the album is a testament to the band's commitment to authenticity and sonic excellence. Vocalist Daniel Sioui's lyrics delve into personal struggles and poignant reflections, shaped by the challenges of middle age and the profound impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. Daniel Sioui candidly shares, “This album sucked to make. It took months of starts and stops because life gets in the way when you are married, almost 50 years old and have 3 kids. Imagine driving to the burbs on random Sunday mornings before your kids' dance class, violin or soccer practices to scream your head off in a garage. It wasn't hard to be pissed off. I lost a few friends to suicide leading up to the recording and you can hear it. Spent months of nights scrawling lyrics in bed. Thick & Thin was the hardest album for me to make in my 35 years of recording. There were times Stu would have me completely rewrite songs…both lyrics and melodies. A total redo. It always yielded a better result and he was right to do it but it really beat me down at times. I'm so proud of the record now but there were many days I didn't know if I could finish it. I don't have too many more records in me so I'm happy it's released out into the wild. Just need my kids to grow up before I can play it for them.” The addition of Gabe Mantle (Gob/Brand New Unit) on drums and Travis Hein (Neck of the Woods) on second guitar and backing vocals injected new vitality into Precursor, propelling the band to new heights of creativity and intensity. "Thick & Thin" not only showcases the band's musical prowess but also serves as a personal testament to resilience and artistic vision. Released on Gold Stock Records, "Thick & Thin" is poised to captivate both long-time fans and new listeners alike with its infectious melodies, explosive energy, and thought-provoking lyricism. As Precursor prepares to unleash their latest offering into the world, anticipation is high for a record that promises to leave an indelible mark on the punk rock landscape. Catch Precursor live at the Pearl in Vancouver on August 2nd alongside Samiam, Off with Their Heads, and Weird Mood, where they'll bring their electrifying sound to life on stage. Greg interviews Anthony and Chris from Long Island, NY's Overthrow on episode 169 of the Hardcore Archive Podcast. Overthrow were first active in the Long Island and NYHC scene in the mid-1990s and played shows throughout the northeast with bands like E-Town Concrete, Indecision, Kid Dynamite, Shutdown, and Madball. The guys in @overthrow_lihc were all friends before starting the band, and discovered hardcore together while they were in high school. We hear about their experience playing shows in the New York area and how the band came to be affiliated with Triple Crown Records. Anthony and Chris discuss the reunion shows over the past decade that ultimately lead to the band reforming and writing new music. The conversation shifts to discuss growing older while still maintaining connections to the hardcore music community, how hardcore has provided an outlet for grief over the loss of friends and family, and how hardcore influenced them as fathers. We hear about the new songs Overthrow has recently recorded, two of which can be found on the popular music streaming platforms, and the forthcoming record due out this fall. We wrap up the interview by hearing about a few of the shows Overthrow has coming up with @gridironhardcore and @e.townconcrete on August 9th and @extinctionad and @swornenemynyc on September 8th. Be sure to check out Overthrow's new songs "The Calling" and "Anywhere But Here" on all the major streaming platforms. For updates on the band follow @overthrow_lihc. When you sit back and think about some of the centerpieces of hardcore punk in the early 2000's, Paint it Black will instantly come to mind. Especially in the Philadelphia area. Philadelphia has a long history of great bands that paved the way for what music music is today. Paint it Black fits that category. One of the most exciting news of this year is when Paint it Black decided to release "Famine." It was the band's first full-length record since 2008 and it did not miss. The biggest praise I can say about this group is that they have not lost their sound. I could have been told that this record was from 20+ years ago when Paint it Black was first forming and I would have believed it. They still have the same energy and are sticking to their roots. The band's story is known by now - they came together when another legendary Philadelphia based group, Kid Dynamite, decided to hang up the band tees, and call it quits. Dan Yemin was still had the same drive from the beginning of Kid Dynamite and wanted to continue making music, so he decided to turn things up a notch and form Paint it Black. Instead of sitting with a guitar on the stage, he decided to switch over to vocals, because no matter what, the band will continue as long as the singer is still there. It was a huge honor to have an established musician like Andy Nelson on. Punk music is engraved deep in his heart and it was a true pleasure to hear some of his inspirations. This included a fantastic conversation about Dillinger Four. "Famine" is a record I can play from start to finish, so while we were on the inspirations conversation, we discussed what he believes makes a "perfect" record. Continously, we really explored this album and heard about what it took to make this record. While the band doesn't tour much anymore, everyone should make it a point to see them if they are ever in your city. Spoiler alert- there might be a conversation about Nelson's other band, Ceremony, making a surprise appearance at Sound and Fury. Dan Yemin is a clinical psychologist (I somehow missed pointing that out in the intro, so pretend I mentioned it) and an ommitter of some of the highest statuture of punk records. To celebrate Paint It Black's ripping new album Famine, I spoke to him in three parts: his experiences in Lifetime, Kid Dynamite and Paint It Black / Open City. Dan Yemin has not one but two bands with new albums out this year: Paint It Black‘s first album in 10 years (and first for Revelation), Famine, as well as the second LP by Open City (which also includes Paint It Black/Ceremony's Andy Nelson and members of Bridge and Tunnel, Titus Andronicus, and Ted Leo + the Pharmacists), Hands In The Honey Jar. With all this exciting stuff happening in his world, we invited him on the latest episode of the BrooklynVegan podcast. Throughout our hour-long conversation, we talked about longevity in punk and hardcore, bridging the gap between different generations, writing political/protest music in the face of hopelessness, what it means to Dan to be on Revelation Records, and much more from throughout Dan's rich history, from the early days of Lifetime to Kid Dynamite to the 20+ years he's spent playing guitar in Paint It Black. -- The BrooklynVegan Show is brought to you in part by DistroKid, a service for musicians that allows you to easily upload your music to all major streaming platforms. Toronto, Canada had a raging ska scene in the mid-2000s. It included ska bands like Hebrew School Dropouts, Suzy Jacuzzi and the Hottubs, and Five Across The Eye. It also included PUP singer Stefan Babcock's former ska band Stop Drop N Skank. But there was one band, The Flatliners, who would go on to sign to Fat Wreck Chords and make a name for themselves in the punk scene. But when they started, they played intense ska-punk. A brutal, aggressive mix of Suicide Machines, Kid Dynamite, Against All Authority and Voodoo Glow Skulls. Today we bring on Flatliners lead singer Chris Cresswell to talk about his early ska years, which includes the brilliant 2005 Stomp Records album Destroy To Create, a favorite among some of their fans that want The Flatliners to bring back the ska. We discuss iconic Toronto venue, Big Bop which fostered this scene by hosting multiple all ages shows every week. We also talk about how Steve Foote from Big D and the Kids Table helped get the band signed, The many ska tours that The Flatliners did (Catch 22, Suicide Machines, Reel Big Fish, Less Than Jake), and how OG Flatliners ska fans always "Spill Your Guts" at shows. We also find out if it was Fat Mike that asked the band to stop playing ska! You won't believe what Chris has to say about that! Super slop episode, saved by editing again. These boys were on fire last night. The singing bits at the beginning and end were both not rehearsed, the Nacho Libre song wasn't even a thought until the last second live recording and we nailed it. Got stuck in the mud in a few areas because I'm a subpar Podcast host but we had a big time last night making this. Always a great time when I get to kick it with the Georgia boys. I say they're friends of mine but truthfully all of Cory's buddies are my only friends lol. Totally meant to give it my all in the Anthem but it's harder than you think, you try to keep straight face and rip a nice and proper high note next to RemDawg and Kid Dynamite. Flying to New York tomorrow, ready to watch a big ol boy drop somebody off at Barclays. Need to get out there mingle with the people and drink some of that water from the Hudson. This podcast covers New Girl Season 2, Episode 24, Winston's Birthday, which originally aired on May 7, 2013 and directed by Max Winkler and was written by Brett Baer & Dave Finkel. Here's a quick recap of the episode:Jess and Nick sleep together for the first time in the last episode! Before they get a chance to talk about it, they're split apart as they prepare for Cece's wedding the next day, Bob arrives, and a new job opportunity pops up for Jess. Meanwhile, Schmidt and Elizabeth work to define their relationship and it's Winston's BIRTHDAY?!We discuss Pop Culture References such as:When talking to Jess, Cece exclaimed her Uncle Shishir “had one scene with Salman Khan in Dabangg 2, and all of the sudden he thinks he's Amitabh Bachchan in Jhoom Barab-ar Jhoom.” Salman Khan Dabangg 2Amitabh BachchanJhoom Barab-ar JhoomHenna - In preparation for her wedding, Cece got her hands painted with henna. Additional Pop Culture References such as:“It Wasn't Me” - Shaggy - In the Schmidt and Elizabeth's flashback scene, this song played. "It Wasn't Me" is the first single from Jamaican reggae musician Shaggy's fifth studio album, Hot Shot. The song features vocals from Rikrok. The lyrics of the song depict one man (Rikrok) asking his friend (Shaggy) what to do after his girlfriend caught him cheating on her with "the girl next door". Mike Tyson - When Cece got henna on her face after sleeping on her hands, she thought she looked like Mike Tyson. Michael Gerard Tyson is a former American professional boxer who competed from 1985 to 2005. Nicknamed "Iron Mike" and "Kid Dynamite" in his early career, and later known as "The Baddest Man on the Planet", Tyson is considered to be one of the greatest heavyweight boxers of all time. He also has notable tattoos on his face. Mandy Patinkin - Shivrang mentioned that Jess told him Cece looked like Mandy Patinkin with the henna smeared on her face. Mandel Bruce Patinkin is a Tony and Emmy award winning American actor and singer. He's prominently known for his role as Inigo Montoya in Rob Reiner's 1987 film The Princess Bride and as Saul Berenson in the Showtime series Homeland, where his character had a thick beard."Until We Get There" - Lucius - When Nick and Jess were on the roof at the end of the episode, this song played. Lucius is a four-piece indie pop band consisting of lead vocalists Jess Wolfe and Holly Laessig, drummer and producer Dan Molad, and lead guitarist Peter Lalish.”Until We Get There” is a song featured on the band's first studio album, Wildewoman, released in 2013.We also cover the moment Schmidt goes to find Elizabeth at the restaurant as our “Schmidtism” this episode. For “Not in the 2020s” we discuss Bob referencing how he “gay[ed] his way out of Vietnam” and the way Schmidt and his coworker treated Elizabeth. We also discuss Elizabeth standing up for herself and Jess owning her own decisions to her dad as our “Yes in the 2020s” moments. Additionally, we give a quick look into Curtis Armstrong (Dr. Foster) and Mary Lynn Rajskub (Peg), the Guest Stars we feature in this episode. Also in this episode were the following guest stars who we do not discuss in the podcast: Merritt Wever (Elizabeth - Previously discussed in S2E22), Satya Bhabha (Shivrang - Previously discussed in S2E18), Rob Reiner (Bob - Previously discussed in S2E8), Maureen Sebastian (Jill), Lewis Dauber (Old Sub), Adam Sauter (Riley - Elizabeth's date), Prem Shelat (Miguel), Karlin Walker (Student #1), Eshun Melvin (Student #2), Taylar Hollomon (Student #3), and Thomas Barbusca (Young Boy).We also share this article (which contains spoilers) where we learned that the creators knew that the audience wanted more Winston and made his birthday a C-plot as a joke. We also shared how the creators wanted to avoid an episode where Jess and Nick talked about their feelings after they had sex. While not discussed in the podcast, we noted other references in this episode including:Flashcubes - When Bob is taking a picture of Jess and Nick, he mentions that he needs to get new flashcubes. These flashcubes were developed in the 1960s by Sylvania Electric Products which caused Kodak to replace the existing flashbulb technology on their series of cameras with flashcubes as the process of how they worked remained similar.Mark Twain - In this episode, Jess mentions bringing the words of Mark Twain alive when she was trying to teach the kids. Mark Twain is the pen name for Samuel Langhorne Clemens who was an American writer, entrepreneur, publisher, and lecturer. He was known for many famous novels like The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. This episode got an 8.5/10 rating from both Kritika and Kelly; Kritika's favorite character was Nick and Kelly's favorite was Jess. Thanks for listening and stay tuned for Episode 25!Music: "Hotshot” by scottholmesmusic.comFollow us on Twitter, Instagram or email us at whosthatgirlpod@gmail.com!Website: https://smallscreenchatter.com/

Back in my car for this interview. This time it was on a freezing December night where the thermostat was definitely in the minus figures, so when we got inside I turned the engine on and the AC up to get some heat into the damn thing. You can probably hear that in the interview. I think it lends it a certain ambiance. You are, of course, welcome to disagree.P.O.S approaches hip hop in a punk rock way. I initially heard him when a friend turned me onto his song ‘De La Souls', which features Greg from The Bouncing Souls. This was around the time Never Better came out. I got both Never Better and Audition on the same day and was impressed by his approach. Those two albums are mostly loud and abrasive, and both feature contributions from punk rock singers (as mentioned, Greg from the Bouncing Souls, and Jason from Kid Dynamite on a track called ‘Terrorish' on Never Better). I read an interview at the time which said he was just making hip hop people could skate too. That sums up a lot of what Audition and parts of Never Better sound like. It's loud, brash, snotty and in your face.We Don't Even Live Here came next and he's right when he calls it a dance party. It's mostly electronic and it goes hard. It seemed a bit of a left turn to begin with, but like everything else it's got the same abrasive nature. His new record chill, dummy is a lot more laid back. It's also great and we do harp on about closer Sleepdrone/Superposition at length in this interview. I've never heard a hip hop song – or any song – like it.I met him a couple of times when he hit Glasgow to support Never Better. He was the consummate gentleman, of course, and I was just as impressed with his work ethic and ethos as I was his music. When I was thinking of guests I wanted on this podcast before I begab, he was definitely up there. So in a way, talking to him fulfils another long held dream I had for this podcast.Goals. We all gotta have em.And so we move to this interview, which is certainly up there with some of the most fun ones I've conducted. He was so up for it, really game for a chat and having a bit of a laugh. The whole thing is easy and flows really well. I didn't even get to look at my questions, instead just riffing as I went. That's how I know it's a good interview.I hope you enjoy it. Our GDPR privacy policy was updated on August 8, 2022. Visit acast.com/privacy for more information.
I am continually surprised that none of the people that I've met whose art has affected my life in significant ways are unpleasant. I always seem to expect some kind of aloof quality in the people I meet whose work has impacted me. It's always wonderful to realise that they are just human like you or I. We put such people on a pedestal; they become more than human because they possess a skill which is unique. So far, everyone I've met has been lovely.Don't tell me that you're not the same.Art which we find monumentally influential affects us for personal reasons. Our heroes become legend to us because their creative output has an ineffable quality which transcends speech, it speaks to us deeply, intimately, profoundly. Sometimes it only resonates with you at a specific point in your life, and as you grow older the influence fades. Some of these influences change into nostalgia. Some are timeless. Vinnie Caruana, like Jim Adkins, Dan Andriano, Ian MacKaye and others before him, sit in that timeless category for me.This is discussed in the podcast, but ‘Forty Hour Train Back to Penn' was a seminal record for me. As someone who had grown up thinking that pop punk was just The Offspring, Green Day and the like, and had subsequently developed an aversion to pop punk after listening to Rise Against, The Movielife seemed like the perfect bridge between those two punk worlds - more aggressive pop punk, which had more emphasis on the punk than the pop.And that's what I think nails the singular genius of Vinnie Caruana and Brandon Reilly. Their talent lies on taking a lot of that punk rock edge and adding some layers of melody and hookiness to it. That in itself is not a new thing, or even a unique thing, but their songwriting style is vastly different to anyone else's. It doesn't feel like it's aping mid 90s pop punk, it feels like a more melodic version of bands like Lifetime or Kid Dynamite, but it still has lashings of influence from great pop songwriters . It's easy to see why Drive-Thru records found them appealing, but to me it always felt like they didn't quite belong there. Then there's the evolution. Vinnie's style changes and matures a lot as his career continues. I am the Avalanche leans much more toward melodic hardcore territory than The Movielife ever did. Peace'd Out is more straight up hardcore and their EP is still a favourite of mine. His solo stuff hews closer to pop more than anything, with many songs on Survivor's Guilt skewing more power pop than anything else, but it still has that unmistakable, undeniable Vinnie Caurana songcraft.I loved talking to this guy. So humble and thankful for what he's been allowed to do, and he seemed like a genuinely happy dude.I hope you enjoy the interview. Our GDPR privacy policy was updated on August 8, 2022.
