" I just needed to do all of those things for myself before I really talked about it publicly. Plus, I was not in a great head space about it at first, as most people aren't with a big injury," says well-known sports dietitian Meghann Featherstun, RDN MS CSSD, in regards to the post where she shared her sacral stress fracture injury at the end of 2024. Meghann Featherstun, aka "Feathers" (if you're a "Fuel for the Sole" listener), and maybe best known by her private practice's name and Instagram handle, Featherstone Nutrition, joined Lane 9 to talk about her running experiences—including her first marathon, the 6 World Marathon Majors in 18 months, her recent injury, and more. Featherstun is a 2:51 marathoner, breaking the 3-hour mark for the first time in 2019 and getting faster from there. And she's on Instagram weekly sharing accessible and easy-applicable sports nutrition information for the everyday runner. (Think you can't fuel before your run? Her graham-crackers say otherwise!) This episode also covers: the real reason Meghann signed up for her very first marathon in 2009 the lessons she had to learn for herself before specializing in sports nutrition how everything came together for her to complete the 6-star World Marathon Majors goal in only 18 months the process of coming to terms with her sacral stress fracture and then sharing with widely, which isn't easy to do how she's been recovering from that injury and of course, sports nutrition! Trends, carbs (not a trend!), sodium (also not a trend, but kind of is!), and eating adequately for performance. Follow Meghann on Instagram @FeatherstoneNutrition. Follow Lane 9 on Instagram @Lane9project. To find a clinician to work with, go to Lane9project.org/Directory and match with a dietitian, therapist, physical therapist, and/or coach from our network. Over the past couple of months I have done a whole bunch of stress fracture strategy calls with runners who seem to be stuck. I take notes every time I do those calls and there're number of steps that all of them seem to be missing. Let's face it, if they weren't missing some critical steps, we would've never gotten on a call to try to figure out a strategy to get them back on the path to healing and running again. In this episode I'm going to explain the five critical stress fracture steps every runner should take if they really want to get back to training and back to running as quickly as possible. Today on the Doc On The Run podcast we're talking about the five critical stress fracture steps for runners.

There's so much we can learn from the older (and wiser) generation of grandparents! Today we thought we'd tap into that wealth of knowledge by asking grandparents to send in their best life advice and sharing them on the podcast! It was so sweet to read advice from people who have already gone through the season we're in now and we were reminded of what's most important in life. We hope this episode makes you happy like it did for us

The defeat of the Persian fleet at Salamis didn't end the Greek struggle for survival - it revealed deep fractures within their alliance that nearly surrendered their hard-won victory. Though only 31 Greek city-states had united against Persian invasion, their coalition teetered on collapse shortly after their naval triumph. When King Xerxes withdrew with most of his forces, leaving General Mardonius in Thessaly to continue the campaign the following spring, the immediate threat seemed to recede. This apparent reprieve accelerated the Peloponnesian desire to retreat behind their defensive wall at the Corinthian isthmus while Athens struggled to rebuild their utterly destroyed city. The strategic gulf between Athens and Sparta widened as Mardonius cleverly exploited these divisions. Sending Alexander I of Macedon as an envoy, the Persians offered Athens remarkably generous terms: autonomy, additional territory, and assistance rebuilding their temples - if they would abandon the Greek alliance. These diplomatic overtures revealed Persian sophistication in understanding and manipulating Greek interstate politics. The stakes became brutally clear when an Athenian councilman who supported accepting Persian terms was stoned to death alongside his family. As Mardonius advanced into Attica a second time, Athens evacuated to Salamis again, sending increasingly desperate envoys to Sparta. The Peloponnesians, however, completed their defensive fortifications at the isthmus while celebrating religious festivals - a thinly-veiled excuse for inaction. Athens found themselves abandoned precisely when they needed their allies most. This moment of crisis illuminates the trajectory of Greek interstate relations that would eventually culminate in the devastating Peloponnesian War decades later. The continental, defensive mindset of Sparta clashed fundamentally with Athens' commitment to a united Greek response. These divergent strategic priorities would develop into competing visions for Greece's future after the Persian threat receded.Support the show

Douglas W. Lundy, MD, MBA, FACS, FAOA, discussed the future of orthopaedic trauma with William T. Obremskey, MD, FAOA, Director of Orthopaedic Trauma at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. Dr. Obremskey shares his vision for the future of orthopaedic trauma surgery, focusing on reducing complications through advanced technologies and improved practices.Perhaps most thought-provoking is Dr. Obremskey's perspective that some of the most impactful advances may not come from fancy technology at all—but from addressing underlying patient factors like smoking cessation and blood sugar control that dramatically affect healing outcomes. The future of trauma care involves both cutting-edge science and fundamental public health initiatives working in tandem.
In this video, Dr. Doug Lucas discusses the critical importance of measuring muscle mass alongside bone health. He explores the reasons why muscle mass testing is not as prevalent as bone density testing, particularly in the context of available treatments. This video delves into the technology of bioelectric impedance, its applications in measuring body composition, and the significance of grip strength as an indicator of longevity. Dr. Doug emphasizes the need for a shift in healthcare to incorporate muscle mass testing and the role of exercise and diet in managing health.*STUDIES*https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/21231827/https://www.nature.com/articles/s41430-020-00711-6
Orchestrated by those who built the stage, this is the final act of a play that started long ago. Act 1 was laying the infrastructure. Act 2 involved major disruption. Act 3 was the execution by policy reasserted thru reprogramming. Act IV includes the confession of the state's revelation. The machine is finally telling us what it knows. We the people are staring down the broken government. DOGE actually started under Obama. Second term execution of a first term strategy. Stripping influence from international institutions. Steven Miller's Domestic Policy Council, and the re-design needed. Friends get money, not adversaries. Weaponizing bureaucracy and altering the battlefield. To hijack and re-wire. Don't move the goalposts, but instead change the game. Starving programs from within. A redefinition of diplomacy. It's not war, it's choreography. Not a collapse, but controlled demolition. The program rebel paradox. Here are the members of the cast. The conditioned patriot, the guardian of the cage, the inverted rebel, the sovereigns and the echo soldier. You were written into the story. The collapse was never the enemy. When chaos fades, what remains is design. There are no surprises left. Outcome C is the revelation state. Above all, have faith in our God We Trust.

Science confirms what our grandparents instinctively knew—children who engage in risky outdoor play develop better motor skills, higher self-esteem, improved social behaviour, and greater problem-solving abilities. Counterintuitively, keeping kids at low heights doesn't prevent injuries, as most fractures occur close to the ground anyway. When we let children climb high, use sharp tools, play with dangerous elements, and occasionally disappear from adult supervision, we're not being negligent—we're helping them develop crucial life skills that no amount of supervised indoor activities can provide. Quote of the Episode: "When did injuring yourself become such a big deal? I mean, when we were kids, it was so exciting to walk in and see that somebody had a cast on their arm—the superhero in the classroom." - Justin Coulson Key Points: Risky play is different from hazardous activity—the child can assess the risk themselves and there's a clear benefit. Children who engage in risky play show improved risk detection, increased competence, higher self-esteem, and decreased conflict sensitivity. Research shows more developed motor skills, better social behaviour, greater independence, and improved conflict resolution in children with access to unsupervised outdoor play. Today's children spend less time outdoors and in unstructured play than ever before in history. Fracture frequency and severity is not related to the height of playground equipment—54% of arm fractures occur at low heights. Sharp knives are actually safer than blunt knives (they require less force and are less likely to slip). Types of risky play include activities involving heights, speed, dangerous tools, dangerous elements, rough-and-tumble play, and the possibility of getting lost. Play where children can disappear or get lost and risky play environments are positively associated with physical activity and social health. Rough and tumble play doesn't increase aggression and is associated with increased social competence. Risky play supports playtime, social interactions, creativity, and resilience. Resources Mentioned: International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health (2015) meta-analysis on risky outdoor play Happy Families website Action Steps for Parents: Distinguish between hazardous activities (where children can't assess risk) and beneficial risky play. Allow age-appropriate risk-taking, such as climbing heights, using real tools, or playing at speed. Step back and monitor from a distance rather than constantly supervising. Provide opportunities for unstructured outdoor play where children can make their own decisions. Remember that injuries are part of childhood development and rarely as serious as our fears suggest.
