Mousin, an Adjunct Faculty member of the DePaul University's College of Law, Refugee and Forced Migrations Studies Program and the Grace School of Applied Diplomacy.  The podcast opens the new year with a request to consider how our biblical and national founding narratives offer us an opportunity to reconsider how we as individuals and a nation should respond to asylum seekers fleeing danger in their homelands. The biblical narrative stories can be found in Matthew 1-2 and Luke 2:1-19.The TRAC data base from Syracuse University provided the information on the 22,068 individuals in detention.  See: https://trac.syr.edu/immigration/detentionstats/pop_agen_table.htmlThe American Immigration Council's report on individuals in detention and the number of unaccompanied minors in detention can be found at: “Rising Border Encounters in 2021: An Overview and Analysis” See: https://www.americanimmigrationcouncil.org/rising-border-encounters-in-2021The Young Center for Immigrant Children's Rights provided the number of over 70,000 individuals trapped in Mexico under the MPP, the stories of the children cited in the podcast, as well as additional stories of children trapped in dangerous situations under these policies.  See:  https://www.theyoungcenter.org/mpp-harms-childrenThe National Immigrant Justice Center documents that thousands more have been denied the opportunity to apply for asylum by the continued implementation of the Title 42 program and expansion of the MPP program. “NIJC Condemns The Biden Administration for Reinstating The Migrant Protection Protocols (MPP).  See: https://immigrantjustice.org/press-releases/nijc-condemns-biden-administration-reinstating-migrant-protection-protocols-mpp (October 15, 2021).Marilynne Robinson, in her essay in “Old Souls, New World,” discusses the democratic principles fostered by many of the Puritans coming to New England in What Are We Doing Here? This episode is all about keeping Christ in Advent when you're busy, worn out, have no time.  Christmas is about Christ and we all know and love the magic that comes with this time of year but lets be real - trying to make Christmas amazing, stay in budget, keep our kids from becoming greedy is a lot of work. I've created a great list of things we do to keep it super simple, meaninful and cultivate great family traditions with little effort on my part.  Kids remember the traditions and memories, not the gifts. So here's my list of what we have done in our family to keep it about family, giving, and Jesus. 1. Grab Bag/Secret Santa 2. Christmas Eve Dinner Out 3. Simple Advent wreath lighting at each meal. 4. Shepherd on the Search : https://www.dayspring.com/the-shepherd-on-the-search-advent-activity-set$29.99 - comes with Shepherd, Book, Manger scene 5. Giving Manger: $39.95 one time pay - comes with book wooden manger, bundle of straw, baby jesus. 6. The Mass Box - Super Advent Bundle : $39.95 for one kid, $64.95 for 2 kids I would love to hear the simple, minimal effort but great result traditions you and your family have cultivated! The Mystery of Parenthood is a show on RED-C Catholic Radio, headquartered in College Station, Texas. On Tuesday November 21, 2017, Trey and Stephanie Cashion tackled the issue of how to prepare for Christmas in a world where Christmas is already being celebrated in November. Trey and Stephanie shared some ways they have been able to maintain a sense of expectancy in their family during the preparatory season of Advent. Some of the resources used in the show are listed below. Our memory verse this week is Luke 2:19, "Mary treasured all these words and pondered them in her heart." Remember to pray, parent with a purpose, and prepare for God to amaze you! "What are the 'O Antiphons'?" Charlie Clauss says that it's okay to cry out against our current secularized, commercial, extended version of Christmas. He says that people are hungry for something more substantial than the "war" over Christmas or the 60-day shopping spree, hungry for something that will feed our souls as we mark time in the world. And that's where the season of Advent can help.  In this episode, Charlie and Mike discuss why Advent is the perfect antidote to the commercialization and secularization of Christmas, and why it is also much much more than that. Advent is not an extended Christmas, or "Christmas Lite." It's a season that reminds Christ followers to reflect on their lives in light of the coming of Christ-- His coming in glory to set all things right. Jesus is coming, and He's coming whether we're ready or not-- and that is reason for hope as well as for self-examination. The discussion ranges from the history of the season, to ideas on how to observe it well, to thoughts on how to not to be an Advent snob, and to some themes and passages that we can turn to at this time of year.  Listen in on the discussion and find out why observing Advent is like finding a cave in a storm, why you might find chocolate in your shoes on December 6, and whether Charlie will be sending Mike ten Lords a-leaping or seven swans a-swimming during the twelve-day feast of Christmas.   Mike Schutt directs Law Student Ministries & Attorney Ministries for the Christian Legal Society and is the founder and host of the Cross & Gavel Audio podcast. Charlie Clauss is the founder of the Keeping Advent Facebook Page, a math teacher, a Minnesota resident, a gentleman, and a scholar, among many other things.
