We are introducing something new to the show, which if successful we will bring in as a monthly feature. With so many great records out in the world we wanted to dig a little deeper and sit down with the artist that created them and talk more about the records. This is Track-by-Track from Just an Insight. The first record we are looking at is Baltimore metalcore quintet, Sharptooth's 2020 record Transitional Forms. Tracklist: Say Nothing (In The Absence Of Content) Mean Brain Life On The Razor’s Edge Hirudinea The Gray Evolution 153 The Southern Strategy M.P.D.B (Manic Pixie Dream Bitch) Nevertheless (She Persisted)
Lauren Kashan of the Baltimore hardcore band Sharptooth joins LAST WORDS this week to talk about the underrated vocalists of past and present in the metal and hardcore worlds. I’m back with another new episode! This week I chatted with Phoenix Lawson (they/them) - who is a college readiness coach based in San Francisco. In this episode, they discuss making the move from Student Affairs to working in a high school readiness system. We also discuss the difficult job search process in student affairs and mental health coping during the pandemic. Phoenix is also a pop punk aficionado - essentially being raised on Blink 182 and Green Day, and more recently The Wonder Years. We dig into music, the NBA (finally), and the Black Lives Matter movement as well. Hope you dig this conversation because it was a fun one!MUSIC NOTE:- This week you got to hear tunes from the new Sharptooth record, “Transitional Forms” which was released last month through Pure Noise Records.- On this episode, you got to hear the tracks, “Say Nothing (In the Absence of Content),” “Life on the Razor’s Edge,” and “The Gray.” You can check out the entire “Transitional Forms” album through all of the streaming platforms NOW! You can even download the album on bandcamp!- Also, if you’re into physical music, make sure you snag a vinyl copy of the album as well!- Lastly, if you’d like to hear Katy Hamm chat with Sharptooth’s Lauren Kashan from an episode that aired almost three years ago, check it out here!
Lauren Kashan is the lead singer of the Baltimore based hardcore band Sharptooth. After hearing their current single "Say Nothing" I couldn't help myself and I needed to know more about this band.

Remfry sat down with Sharptooth vocalist Lauren Kashan to discuss some of the pertinent themes explored on the Baltimore hardcore band's new album Transitional Forms. Together, they vent about the current state of the world on topics as broad as cancel culture, misogyny, mental health issues and why despite the fact that we're in such a tumultuous period of history it seems that so few heavy bands have anything meaningful to say. Sharptooth has always stood by their views with social justice by educating the value of human rights at every level of society. Expressing it within their music gives us a taste of their passion while enlightening us on how to be more aware of these everyday problems. Lauren dissects the inner core of these current issues and how to go about making a difference within the community.
Lauren returns! Much has changed since she last chatted with us in November 2017. She moved to Boston. Her band, Sharptooth, played the final full US run of Warped Tour and traveled the world. And they have a new record out this week on Pure Noise Records! She joins Matt, Jordan, and Justin to chat about all of that and more. Although Matt and Lauren made eggs together on Warped Tour and grew up in a hyperlocal Baltimore County music community, this is their first official meeting. Jordan and Justin go way back with Lauren to the days in which she'd be the one starting non-generic mosh pits at their mid aughts shows. What else is covered? Great question! • what her transition is like physically and emotionally before and after sets • her feelings about being a representative for women in her music community • developing skills and career opportunities outside of music • what it's like releasing a new album during a global pandemic • what she wants people to take away most from the new record • Sharptooth's new music video "Say Nothing (In The Absence Of Content)" You can look at our faces while listening to this conversation! https://www.youtube.com/chocolatecroissants We want to connect with you! Episode 320 - STRAP IN, this episode is quite a journey. I have Lauren Kashan, the vocalist from hardcore band Sharptooth, on the show today. What starts off as a conversation getting to know her, takes a very dark turn and she discusses her substance abuse issues and her admission into a “rehab clinic” that essential, acts like a cult. It’s an incredibly powerful story and one that I was really appreciative for her sharing here. You must listen to this week, no joke it’s one of my favorite chats I have done to date. This is the second of three episodes with interviews recorded from the Detroit stop of the Van’s Warped Tour. We have another double header for you with first, an interview with Lauren Kashan, the lead vocalist of the Baltimore-based hardcore punk band Sharptooth, and then a chat with frontman Matt Honeycutt of the Texas-based metalcore band Kublai Khan. Lauren Kashan is the guest this week. This chat is all over the place, in a great way, from playing getting to know you games that Sharptooth plays to pass the time on tour, which also reveals way too much about Lauren and myself. We also venture into some weighty topics of mental and self esteem issues stemming from our experiences with doctors we had at an early age. We also discuss still being a fan of things and sharing things we both geeked out about, to Lauren being a Herpetologist and the bands upcoming tours with Senses Fail and playing on the last full Warped Tour. Lauren Kashan is the vocalist of the melodic-hardcore band, Sharptooth (Pure Noise Records). She joins Jordan and Justin in the CCompound to share her story of joining the band and eventually realizing her dream of signing a record deal and touring nationally with bands she looks up to. But as we do on Chocolate Croissants, we dig much more into the human being than simply what they're otherwise known for. Lauren chats about her childhood and how it shaped her careers as a musician and a herpetoculturist (i.e. she brings crocodiles to schools!) She digs into how meditation influences her life, her screaming techniques, finding identity through hardcore music, and how a Sharptooth show brought her and her mom closer together. Lauren also chats about being a woman in the hardcore scene and introducing social issues and politics into her art. Many more will know about her years from now...but we're happy to share this gem of a human with you now! 19:Lauren Kashan (Sharptooth) &Femmes in Hardcore WELCOME TO THE EDUPUNX PODCAST! This week, Katy Hamm returns as the host of the podcast to bring you a special chat with a very badass guest. Lauren Kashan is the lead singer for the melodic hardcore band, Sharptooth. Lauren also holds a Herpetology degree from Towson University in Baltimore, Maryland. She is a self-proclaimed Reptile Lady and works as an Environmental educator, regularly visiting schools, libraries, and other spaces where she teaches folks about reptiles and other fun creatures. In this episode, Katy and Lauren bond over their shared love of hardcore music, wanting more femme representation in hardcore, and how fighting the patriarchy often starts in the pit. Katy's return to hosting duties is a doozy this week and you are bound to love it! And you get to hear some of the kickass tunes from the new Sharptooth album, Clever Girl, which is out THIS FRIDAY through Pure Noise Records. And stay tuned later this week for an extended episode of Katy and Lauren's chat - cuz they just had SO MUCH to talk about this week!EPISODE NOTES:- Just a heads up - there is A LOT of explicit language on this episode.- I absolutely love that Sharptooth's name is a reference to Land Before Time - because it's one of my favorite movies from my childhood.- And the new album, "Clever Girl," is a reference to Jurassic Park - because after all, Lauren loves Velociraptors.- Lauren suggests checking out the Gone series from Michael Grant.- Both Katy and Lauren have recently gone through the Dave Eggars book, "The Circle," which was adapted and released as a film this year.- Another commonality among Katy and Lauren is their love for the album, "Diamond" by Stick to Your Guns. - Adding more to their shared obsessions, each also have a tattoo for the band Every Time I Die - Katy's being a quote from the song "Ebolarama," and Lauren's being an inner lip tattoo of the title of the band's debut LP, Hot Damn!- in a not-so surprising turn of events, it is not shocking to learn that the Herpetologist and massive animal/reptile lover/educator, Lauren, owns every single Animorphs book ever released. MUSIC NOTES:- This week we got to share tunes from the new Sharptooth album, "Clever Girl," which comes out THIS FRIDAY on Pure Noise Records.- You can snag all sorts of merch bundles, including CD, vinyl, and digital copies of the new album by visiting Sharptooth.Merchnow.com.- Make sure to also check out the band's new music video for the politically charged title track, "Clever Girl," on youtube!- If you like what you heard from the band, make sure you catch them on tour with Stray from the Path and Anti-Flag this winter - a tour that was very recently announced!
