The Limelight Podcast

With a new album on the horizon, Fraser of Chief State stopped by to give us an update on when we can expect it to drop. The pop-punk band from Vancouver, Canada is eager to hit the road after playing a sold-out show with supporting Youth Fountain's sophomore album release. We dive into the new record a bit while going over how the show went. Which was Chief State's first show back since the beginning of the pandemic.  

Let's say you get a phone call from one of your favorite bands and they needed you to fill in for a member on their tour run, would you drop everything to perform? Because that's exactly what Michael did when Brent from August Burns Red called him in the middle of his work shift. Even though it has been quite some time since Michael's band Convictions has been on the road he wasn't missing out on this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Maybe we will see both bands tour together sometime in the near future. Until then, you can catch Michael and his band live after announcing a headlining tour for their most recent album, 'I Won't Survive'. This run will be from March 18th to April 10th!   

Chicago has birthed some of the most prominent pop-punk bands in the scene. You have Fall Out Boy, Knuckle Puck, Action/Adventure, and Belmont just to name a few. I wonder if there is a correlation between the deep dish pizza and the music? Either way, Fluorescents is following in their footsteps as one of the next bands to be on the rise. Tyler joins us to give some insight into when we can expect new music, and what his favorite music releases were of 2021.  

Is this festival lineup too good to be true? Should we be skeptical of a one-day, thirteen-hour show? Will we have to choose between certain artists to see due to set times? The biggest emo/pop-punk festival of our existence is in full swing and all we can do is hope to get a pre-sale ticket before selling out. The pop-punk scene is thriving in New Jersey and Northvale, from Asbury Park, is a perfect example of it. They are comprised of music veterans that are very well prepared to write some solid hits. Boasting features such as Joey Flemming of In Her Own Words on their debut single, “Sleepwalking”, and AJ Perdomo of The Dangerous Summer on the song, “High Tide”. Hailing from Indianapolis, Indiana, Relics are ready to hit the studio once again to please us with their catchy choruses and intricate guitar riffs. Recently the band opened up for Fit For A King and are quickly establishing themselves within the metalcore community. Their most recent single, "Indigo", has been making a lot of noise with only being out for two months, accumulating 15k on their music video in that time span. Let's kick off the new year with a band you need to keep a close eye on in 2022. Foxera has added one of the most prominent vocalists in the alternative music scene, Micheal Swank. Thankfully, the New Jersey scene has a handful of professionals who help keep the community thriving throughout the years in this music industry. Greg has been promoting/booking shows since he was a teenager and currently has a home base at the House of Independents in Asbury Park, NJ. Although he is not touring or a member of Like Moths To Flames anymore, he still drums in his current band The Air I Breathe. He also has plenty of ideas in the works to get the local scene a place to grow. Chaney Elaine, vocalist of House Parties, has been absolutely incredible when it comes to marketing their band on social media. Taking advantage of the algorithm TikTok using their catchy choruses and her glorious vocals has been putting them on the map in the pop-punk scene. Touring is starting to become a normal opportunity again for artists, and The Home Team just got off one of the best runs in their entire career as a band. Like Pacific has gone through trials and tribulations to record their newest album, 'Control My Sanity', during the peak of the pandemic. Another Pure Noise Records band we just can't stop talking about. Another prime example of an underground band taking advantage of the TikTok algorithm. Magnolia Park's success on the platform did not happen by accident. They have established a refreshing pop-punk sound and invested in making their content look/sound just as professional as their recent mixtape, 'Dream Eater'. Jared takes us through the band's early journey and explains how they got to where they are now. (Spoiler Alert) They have all quit their day jobs and signed to Epitaph Records. It won't be long before their music is being repeatedly played on the radio. Trust us.

Jules proudly describes her music as genre-less and pulls her inspiration from all avenues of music. She has been featured in Philadelphia Weekly magazine and is enjoyed by 50,000+ monthly listeners on Spotify alone; all while self-managing herself! Jesea Lee is a publicist and playlist curator based in Cleveland, Ohio. He is best known for his presence on TikTok where he has amassed close to 400k followers by teasing his playlists and exposing the corners of "music TikTok" to new sounds. Jesea talks about how his career has transformed since becoming an influencer and how he is now trying to bridge his success on TikTok to other platforms. We discuss the importance of artists establishing a social media presence and the rise of TikTok in the music community. It goes without saying, but TikTok is here to stay. Especially in the music space, TikTok has transformed into an app that provides much more strategic based content than just tacky dance videos. The app has now become the go-to place for listeners to hear new music and experience new bands. George details what he's learned since beginning his journey of becoming a TikTok influencer and what artists can learn from his time curating videos. Poeta is promoting the release of their latest single "Archangel" on May 8th to coincide with Mental Health Awareness Month. The band is currently prepping to head to the studio to lay down the tracks for their first album since the release of Golden Fields in 2017.

Matt McAndrew is continuing to ride the highs of his debut with Slaves since the release of their album 'To Better Days' in 2020. Matt talks about his experiences on The Voice and the pressures of replacing a polarizing member of an already successful band. Slaves is currently recording a follow-up to their 2020 release and will be doing so with a name change as a result of the civil unrest and calls for awareness towards social justice issues we still face.

With their most recent hit single, "Home", featuring Drew York of Stray From The Path, Siamese is ready to hit the road. They are set to tour Europe with Slaves in the fall of 2021 when the world hopefully goes back to some normalcy. New age Chicago pop-punkers Action/Adventure went viral in 2020 for their polarizing TikTok that highlights critics and their prejudiced stereotypes when it comes to the way their music is “supposed” to sound. After 1.3 million views and counting, the world is starting to give Action/Adventure, as well as the elite Chicago scene, the attention they rightfully deserve. In August 2020, Conquer Divide released their first new music since 2015 by releasing “Chemicals”. Kia and Sam join the Limelight to explain their writing process, summon ring light ghosts, and eroding the stereotypes of being “female” musicians. Conquer Divide also went viral with their cover of Billie Eilish's hit song “Bad Guy”.

Aussie alternative rockers, Waxflower, join the Limelight from down under. Waxflower is currently prepping the unveiling of their debut EP “We Might Be Alright” which is set to release on April 16th. Australia has worked hard to combat the COVID-19 pandemic and has been fortunate to have the return of live shows. Waxflower has been taking full advantage of the clean slate of opportunities that have been made available to ride the success of their 2020 releases “Getting Better” and “Again”.

Let's cut to the chase, Billy Sheehan is a legend. He's got too many accolades to name and is known worldwide as one of the greatest bass players to ever have a pulse. He's climbed the rock ranks by performing with Talas, Mr. Big, David Lee Roth, Steve Vai, and others. Billy joins us to reminisce being on the road and discuss staying busy by recording 120 tracks, releasing a new Talas record, and teaching masterclasses; all of which he's done during a pandemic.

Pop-punk is not dead. Philadelphia band Midfield finds themselves reminding folks of that statement; especially since they've been featured in the Spotify playlist of the same declaration. Metalcore has been evolving since the early 2000s, and Viridian is doing it right. Hailing from New Jersey, they continue to release singles over the years to catch the attention of the interested listener. They recently released music videos through major media outlets such as Caliber TV and Dreambound on YouTube. One of their most prominent songs features Jonny Reeves from Kingdom of Giants called, "Kinetic".

Drumming legend Dale Crover joins the podcast all the way from Los Angeles, California to give updates on the success of his new solo album, Rat-A-Tat-Tat!
