In this week's "Clinging to God & Guns" show, Lloyd and Pastor Bennett finally fisking an article from Patheos.com that is so chocked-full of stupid that it has taken three full weeks to dissect. The author, a United Methodist "pastor," says we're all going to hell for not supporting gun control, and in this final episode suggests ways to reduce mass shootings that he says "merit our consideration." There's so much stupid that we could not cover it all in one episode go back and listen to episodes 263 and 264, if you dare. This week, my friend George stopped by to talk about the intersections of straight-edge and radical politics. We talked about being sober, punk and hardcore, and the how revolutionaries might benefit from the clarity and focus of being drug-free. But, fear not--neither of us are here trying to provide some prescriptive dogma. Honestly, it was just fun to catch up and shoot the shit. George also talks a bit about the new Stick to Your Guns EP, The Meaning Remains, which comes out this week so stick around ‘til the very end of the episode to hear a bit more about the record. This week, I am joined by two lovely guests: Soph and Izzy. I wanted to check in with two of the coolest kids I know to get a new perspective on the world. While I obviously think it’s valuable to listen to authors and journalists, musicians and community-organizers, or chat with other podcasters, I think it’s equally important to elevate the imaginations, passions, and perceptions of younger generations. To get those viewpoints on the program, I sat down with my partner Megan’s two kids, Soph and Izzy. In this episode, we chat about raising chickens, climate change, bees and trees and penguins, boring liberal black lives matter protests, homeschooling, COVID-19, and so much more. I think this is definitely a unique episode, so it may not be for everyone, but I found our conversation immensely edifying and I hope you will, too. "We're really excited to hit the road", proclaimed Michael Ryan, guitarist for Brisbane melodic hardcore outfit UNI/VS ahead of their first Australian tour which kicks off in Sydney on March 15. "We've put a fair bit of effort into the organisation behind it all so it's good to be finally all done and the next step is to hit the road".Being their first time out on the road, Ryan admits that while fans outside of their home town might be unfamiliar with their live performance, UNI/VS aim is to convert as many people as possible to support live music."I'd like to think that they expect some high energy", he affirmed. "We're gonna hit it as hard as we can and provide as good a show as we possibly can and make it as entertaining as possible".Since their inception in early 2017 UNI/VS have supported a host of touring international bands including Silverstein, Stick to Your Guns and Terror, with Ryan agreeing that the band has been taking mental notes on sustaining a tour of their own."I guess for lack of a better word the passion that all of those bands bring here", he said is the main thing that has stood out. "Some of those bands travel a long way to play and you wanna put in as much as they do so hopefully one day you can be in the position they are in and travel the world".In the full interview, Michael discusses last years E.P Smile and the reaction to it, how it differs from their first E.P, the reasons why they have put out two E.P's and no albums, how the modern music industry favours quantity over quality to an extent, changes in the Australian music industry and more.
**This week’s episode is dedicated to the memory of the martyrs who’ve fought and died to defend Rojava** In this week’s edition of Coffee with Comrades, we sit down with Reed from Demand Utopia to discuss social ecology, international solidarity, and militant creativity. We explore radical imagination, the evolution of revolutionary culture, and chat about Demand Utopia’s inspirations. The discussion also covers social ecology, the feminist revolution in Northern Syria more popularly known as Rojava, and how we can cultivate militant creativity. Given that Josh has already told the tales of being kidnapped in Egypt and playing one of the first shows that an American hardcore band in Kenya has played, I was worried that he might not have any stories left for me when he agreed to do this interview. Never fear. Josh delivers the goods - and this is probably the hardest I've laughed during any podcast that I've recorded. Josh has been a full-time touring musician with bands like Evergreen Terrace, Casey Jones, Stick to Your Guns and Eighteen Visions for many, many years. In his spare time, he often travels to countries with unstable governments. As such, he's accumulated a lot of hilarious stories. When Josh is in Chicago, he stops in at South Loop Strength & Conditioning to train, so it's always a treat to get to chat with someone who likes the two things that I like: heavy music and extreme fitness programs. Note: There was an issue with Josh's mic during the first 10 minutes or so of the podcast. We caught the issue and fixed it - and I did a little bit of post-production management to adjust the levels - so just skip the beginning part of the quieter audio is annoying. Apologies for that! Check out more from Josh here: Instagram: @joshjamesxxx//@stygoc//@18v_official Website: www.sticktoyourguns.net//www.18vofficial.com If you're enjoying the show, why not a leave a review? 19:Lauren Kashan (Sharptooth) &Femmes in Hardcore WELCOME TO THE EDUPUNX PODCAST! This week, Katy Hamm returns as the host of the podcast to bring you a special chat with a very badass guest. Lauren Kashan is the lead singer for the melodic hardcore band, Sharptooth. Lauren also holds a Herpetology degree from Towson University in Baltimore, Maryland. She is a self-proclaimed Reptile Lady and works as an Environmental educator, regularly visiting schools, libraries, and other spaces where she teaches folks about reptiles and other fun creatures. In this episode, Katy and Lauren bond over their shared love of hardcore music, wanting more femme representation in hardcore, and how fighting the patriarchy often starts in the pit. Katy's return to hosting duties is a doozy this week and you are bound to love it! And you get to hear some of the kickass tunes from the new Sharptooth album, Clever Girl, which is out THIS FRIDAY through Pure Noise Records. And stay tuned later this week for an extended episode of Katy and Lauren's chat - cuz they just had SO MUCH to talk about this week!EPISODE NOTES:- Just a heads up - there is A LOT of explicit language on this episode.- I absolutely love that Sharptooth's name is a reference to Land Before Time - because it's one of my favorite movies from my childhood.- And the new album, "Clever Girl," is a reference to Jurassic Park - because after all, Lauren loves Velociraptors.- Lauren suggests checking out the Gone series from Michael Grant.- Both Katy and Lauren have recently gone through the Dave Eggars book, "The Circle," which was adapted and released as a film this year.- Another commonality among Katy and Lauren is their love for the album, "Diamond" by Stick to Your Guns. - Adding more to their shared obsessions, each also have a tattoo for the band Every Time I Die - Katy's being a quote from the song "Ebolarama," and Lauren's being an inner lip tattoo of the title of the band's debut LP, Hot Damn!- in a not-so surprising turn of events, it is not shocking to learn that the Herpetologist and massive animal/reptile lover/educator, Lauren, owns every single Animorphs book ever released. MUSIC NOTES:- This week we got to share tunes from the new Sharptooth album, "Clever Girl," which comes out THIS FRIDAY on Pure Noise Records.- You can snag all sorts of merch bundles, including CD, vinyl, and digital copies of the new album by visiting Sharptooth.Merchnow.com.- Make sure to also check out the band's new music video for the politically charged title track, "Clever Girl," on youtube!- If you like what you heard from the band, make sure you catch them on tour with Stray from the Path and Anti-Flag this winter - a tour that was very recently announced!
