Denverites are reeling from Mayor Johnston's Friday announcement of budget cuts to free up money to provide more support for migrants, and now the uproar is spreading into the suburbs! Host Bree Davies and producer Paul Karolyi are talking about the blowback to Johnston's cuts and the “sanctuary city” debate in Lakewood, plus the Denver Zoo's new 570-acre facility in Weld County. Finally, we're considering your thoughts on whether we should be saying “migrant,” “new immigrant,” or something else entirely? Bree mentioned a Westword story featuring comments from a Venezuelan migrant himself about the budget cuts. Hear our conversation with Denverite editor Obed Manuel about one newsroom's decision to change their language around the crisis of new people arriving in Denver from Venezuela. Paul discussed local author Helen Thorpe's excellent book “The Newcomers.” For even more news from around the city, subscribe to our morning newsletter Hey Denver at denver.citycast.fm. Welcome home, y'all! We are back with episode 4 of the Native Land Pod, co-hosted by Andrew Gillum, Angela Rye, and Tiffany Cross.  They kick off the conversation with an exploration of Sanctuary City policies, dissecting the economic realities and social responsibilities at play. The discussion then shifts to the critical topic of black voter engagement, as they examine the challenges and missed opportunities facing black communities, and emphasize the consistent neglect of rural black voters. From there, the trio delves into the complex dynamics of rap beef and unpack the cultural significance of these highly publicized online conflicts against the backdrop of the latest social media hearing on Capitol Hill. Plus, Andrew opens up to his best friends and co-hosts about his journey of resilience, reflecting on moments of despair and self-discovery. Angela and Tiffany provide unwavering support as Andrew shares his experiences, discussing the pain of public scrutiny and the challenges of finding purpose amidst adversity. A Three-Minute Message from Gaza (w/ Mohamed el Saife)

More than 10,000 Palestinians have been killed in Israel's retaliatory assault on Gaza in the past month, including thousands of women, children, and elderly, according to the Palestinian Ministry of Health. The real number is likely much higher… we don't know how many people, dead and alive, are under the rubble right now. But we do know that the bombs continue to fall, every day, at rates unseen in this century. This is an absolute nightmare. For the past month, we have been trying every single day to make contact with Palestinians in Gaza and the West Bank, to get their stories on the show so people could hear directly from them. But, for obvious reasons, that has proven to be extremely difficult. Every single time we connected with someone and set up an interview, something would happen, we'd lose touch with them, their phone would stop working, and we'd have no idea if they safe, if they were alive. One of those people was Mohamed el Saife. Mohamed is an independent video journalist in Gaza, and the last message he sent us on October 15 said, “I am now on the ground, between life and death.” After that, we lost touch with Mohamed for over two weeks, and we feared the worst. Then, on November 9, we got another message. With the tiny amount of internet he was able to use, Mohamed sent us a three-minute voice message from Gaza. Every day the Palestinian civilian death toll is rising dramatically as Israel continues with its genocidal bombing and ground invasion of Gaza, and as settler and military violence towards Palestinians in the West Bank intensifies. "It's a closure, it's a curfew, in many places in the West Bank," Issa Amro says. "It's not normal life these days. Soldiers are everywhere, settlers are everywhere, people are afraid to leave their homes, they don't go to work, they don't go to school, they don't go to universities." After losing touch with Issa during the day because he was escaping from settlers who were chasing him in Hebron, we managed to reconnect over the phone and record a nine minute conversation about the hell working people in Palestine are going through right now and what their fellow workers in the US and Canada can do to stop the slaughter. Issa Amro is a Palestinian human rights defender living in Hebron, in the Occupied West Bank. He is the co-founder and former coordinator of the grassroots group Youth Against Settlements. Days prior to this recording, Issa was evicted from his home in Hebron and tortured by Israeli troops.   A note about the audio: After hours of silence and failed phone calls, Issa contacted Max to inform him that he was temporarily safe and had 10 minutes to speak over the phone. Dropping everything he was doing, Max quickly opened his computer, began a QuickTime recording, and called Issa on speakerphone. We apologize for the sub-par audio quality. Talking Through The Lost and the Plunderers On this episode of The Walking Dead Talk Through, we discuss Season 8, Episode 10 of The Walking Dead, which is titled The Lost and the Plunderers. Audio Problems this episode… This week’s episode is not up to our normal audio quality. This is the first episode that I’ve done at our new place, and it ended up being very echoey with a lot of reverb. I’m working to correct this for next week. Also, we had a few technical issues on top of that, and that didn’t help. I corrected, or at least improved, some of the issues before handing the files off to Kyle for editing, as I was too busy with the move and the process of cleaning up the old place for a sale. Thanks to Kyle for editing this episode. I know it wasn’t easy. Title Cards This episode brought back the use of title cards. Most prominently, we saw them in the 5th season premiere, No Sanctuary. We see title cards for Michonne, Negan, Enid, Simon, Jadis and Rick, a total of six cards instead of five, as I mentioned in the recording (I was tired… so sue me!). Mark and I thought this was the best episode we had seen from The Walking Dead in a long time, and definitely the best of the season so far. We actually felt something for Jadis??? We actually felt sympathy for Jadis for the first time, after seeing her go through this brutal attack. Hopefully, she will become a more sympathetic character going forward. Ratings are WAY down from last week The Lost and the Plunderers got a 2.86 in the 18-49 demographic, with 6.820 million viewers, down considerably from 3.64 and 8.282 million viewers last week. I’m guessing people were interested to see what happened with Carl but were really disappointed that he’s gone. I expect more erosion of the viewership going forward. Get in your feedback! Copy Editors from the New York Times protest their "humiliating" layoffs. Does the bitter angst of these NYT globalists portend newfound empathy for the American Rust Belt? Meanwhile, Homeland Security Advisor Thomas Bossert defends Trump's tweets, and we look into the dubious track record of acting FBI Director Andrew McCabe. Quintessential denizen of the Deep State? We sample excerpts from President Trump's Saturday speech at the high-energy "Celebrate Freedom Rally." Clearly, the Hostile Media has failed in its efforts to neuter Donald Trump. Also, we consider the House's passage of "Kate's Law" and the "No Sanctuary for Criminals" act, along with the Supreme Court's upholding of Trump's "Travel Ban." Plus, we review the worsening immigration problems of Italy, which may be paving the path for more "populist" politicians, according to Italian Prime Minister Paolo Gentiloni. Talking Through The Day Will Come When You Won’t Be The Day Will Come When You Won't Be are prophetic words spoken by Dr. Jenner way back in season 1 as Rick and the gang fled an about to explode CDC in Atlanta. Much like Rick, we didn't ever think that those words would or could come back to haunt us. Now we know differently. Two of our beloved characters will no longer be a part of our show, but they will not be forgotten. Especially by the rest of the characters. In fact, this episode will most likely be the story that changed everything. The most polarizing episode ever! Quite a polarizing episode once again from The Walking Dead, and if you are anything like me, you didn't really like The Day Will Come When You Won’t Be. That's not to say it's a bad episode, but bad things happened. Things I didn't like. Things that will forever change the show, and maybe not for the better. I had a hard time with this episode mainly because of the frustration. I don't like watching someone get their spirit and resolve broken, and that's exactly what happened to Rick. I don't like watching injustice and that's what Negan embodies for me. Fortunately, Maggie still has some fight left in her, and hopefully, she will be able to bring them back from the brink of despair. We're all counting on you, Maggie! We will mourn the loss of Glenn and Abraham for a long time to come! That’s It For The Day Will Come When You Won’t Be! We love to get your feedback! Please send us some audio! The Day Will Come Will You Won’t Be got an 8.36 in the 18-49 demographic, with 17.029 million viewers, up from the last season finale‘s 6.92 and 14.193 million viewers. It’s also up from the last season finale, which got a 7.43 in the 18-49 and 14.633 million viewers. It’s the second-highest rating ever for the show, second only to No Sanctuary‘s 8.70 and 17.290 million viewers.

Talking Through No Sanctuary! No Sanctuary is the record-breaking season 5 premiere that knocked our socks off! Terminus is finally revealed, and while we don't actually see anyone eating people, it's pretty clear that's what's cookin' in this episode. Full of thrills, kills, and chills, this episode was a nonstop roller coaster of suspense and sensitivity. We discuss all of the crazy intensity a fan could want, crammed into 45 minutes of TV. This week we discuss all of the crazy intensity a fan could want to be crammed into 45 minutes of TV. We answer some burning questions like: What is going on with Tyreese?and…Do we buy Eugene's explanation? We also discuss the awesomeness that is Rambo Carol in this episode as well as the poignant reunions and the special after credit scene. Since there was no Beth in the premiere, you still have time to send in your feedback and tell us what you think happened to Beth as well as any other questions or theories you have. The timeline we talked about is worth checking out as it is very awesome and detailed. We can tell a lot of work went into creating it, props to them for providing all of that information. Finally, we would appreciate your ratings and reviews on Apple Podcasts. Ratings were through the roof! Ratings were No Sanctuary broke a record for the show! It got an 8.70 in the 18-49 demographic, with 17.290 million viewers. That broke the record from last season’s premiere, which was 8.20 and 16.100 million. It’s not as high as we hoped for in our introduction episode, but it’s still damn impressive. See you next week! Please remember to subscribe to us on Apple Podcasts. This was an amazing season premiere and the writers really gave the fans everything they wanted. Lots of reunions and some kickass Rambo-style initiative from Carol. We haven't seen the last of Gareth. Here's the highlights of the tv show and what we talked about on the podcast: [spoilers] We get to see how Terminus became what it is. The backstory of Gareth and his group is presented but not sure if this justifies their actions. Rick and the gang escape Terminus and leave it in ruins Carol uses a meat suit to become one with the walkers. Also helps the others with a clever diversion. Rick reunites with Judith, Sasha with Tyrese and Daryl with Carol. Surprise reappearance of a fan favorite with Morgan. We also talk about some news around the new Walking Dead spin-off series from AMC. Subscribe to us on iTunes and rate us on there if you like our podcast!
