Welcome to Dev Game Club, where this week we begin a series on 1985's Ultima IV. After talking about the recent Defeating Games for Charity, we set the game in its time, talk about our encounters in the past with the series, and then dive into the manuals and the start of the game. Susan Murphy is dragged by her anthropologist parents to the Arctic so they can study the Eskimo tribe who introduced the world to Gamera. Susan is angry she will miss her last two years of high school while her younger twin siblings, Shawn and Sharon, love that they live closer to the North Pole and Santa Claus. But Susan won't have any of this “baby stuff” and berates the twins, who run away. Susan is forced by her father to search for them, and she wrecks her snowmobile in a blizzard. When she awakes, she finds herself in the North Pole, which has the twins, Elves, a talking polar bear, and, yes, Santa Claus. If that wasn't enough, she and her siblings get caught up with an invasion by Santa's evil brother, Krampus, who commands an army of Goblins and a kaiju reindeer. The Finnish Foundation for Economic Education awarded a student, Aase Timonen, roughly $30,000 to fund her doctoral research into “transmedia worldbuilding in massive game franchises,” using the Warhammer franchise as her focus. Her research, conducted at the Game Research Lab at Tampere University, will examine how the broad spread of media (miniatures, novels, rules, etc.) has shaped Warhammer’s development, its shift toward competitive play, and its increasing canonicity. The classic 1984 Toon TTRPG is returning with a new 2nd Edition from Steve Jackson Games, slated for a Backerkit crowdfunding launch on December 17, 2025. Game designer Steve Jackson explains that the update, conceived at least four years prior, is being done because he likes the game and felt it was due. Key changes in the new edition include the simplification of character creation, the introduction of mnemonics, and a dramatic streamlining of the “Fall Down” mechanic to be based on missing three actions instead of three calendar minutes, eliminating clock-watching. The new edition will feature new art by Kyle Miller, all in color, and will be available in both hard and softcover. Draw Steel: Crack the Sun is a crowdfunder by MCDM Productions, which has successfully raised over $1.8 million. The campaign aims to determine the future of the Draw Steel product line and includes seven new products for 2026. These include Encounters, a 350-page third core rulebook filled with pre-made scenarios, NPCs, and skill tests; Between Sun and Shadow, a dedicated ancestry book adding eight new playable species like Goblins and Shadow Elves; and The Beastheart, a new class with four subclasses and fourteen animal companions. The main product is Crack the Sun, the first official epic campaign for Draw Steel, which is a mega-adventure in five acts for 3rd through 8th level heroes, along with three other new shorter adventures including the high-octane anti-hero adventure, The Condemned. The Temeraire RPG from Magpie Games is set to launch its crowdfunding campaign in “early 2026.” The role-playing game is based on Naomi Novik’s Temeraire alternate history fantasy series, which reimagines the Napoleonic Wars with an air force of sentient dragons and their human aviators. The game will focus on the dynamic between the dragon and its rider, incorporating elements of epic military battles, logistics, and supply lines, as well as “Regency era romance,” allowing players to take to the skies as both dragon and aviator while navigating the balance of duty and desire. She went last year and says she emerged from this theatrical, shamanic ceremony feeling refreshed and ready for the year to come. The event is Friday, Saturday, and Sunday from 7 – 9:30 p.m. at the Minnesota Opera Center in Minneapolis. This event is not recommended for young children.Melanie describes the event: It's a blessing led by Jamie Meyer and Patricia Choate, and they lead the audience through a two-part ceremony about letting go of what's ready to die through the solstice and receiving blessings for new life. So there's the Old Bone Mother who helps us to release what needs to go, kind of like a spiritual composting. And then in the second act, there are reindeer women who move through the audience with rattles and blessings, and they fill the space with new life. There's storytelling and singing, and it ends with a wild drum jam. And so it is dealing with heavy themes, but there's a lot of lightness and humor. Jamie is hilarious, so there's hilarity and sacredness all at the same time.— Melanie ShirleyHanukkah Goblins in dance theater formShari Aronson of Z Puppets Rosenschnoz has taken part in many productions of Eric Kimmel's beloved children's book, “Hershel and the Hanukkah Goblins,” but she says she's never seen a dance theater production of the story. Enter Little Tanz Theater, which was formed this year, led by Hannah MacKenzie-Margulies. Their family-friendly dance theater production of the classic story is Saturday at 2 and 5 p.m. and Sunday at 2 p.m. at Southwest High School in Minneapolis.Shari says: I find [dance theater to be a] really a great way to express this story of bringing light to dark times and to really using your wits to overcome what seem like insurmountable forces against you. The production incorporates klezmer music with some of my favorite local klezmer musicians, and that just adds such a feeling of being back in those small Eastern European villages — the shtetl.— Shari Aronson
