What happens when a band ditches thrash just as it goes mainstream… and dives headfirst into French poetry, industrial noise, and orchestral arrangements? You get Into the Pandemonium by Celtic Frost, a boundary-shattering 1987 album that still divides, bewilders, and inspires. In this episode, we dig deep into this genre-defying masterpiece that blurred the lines between black metal, gothic atmospheres, and avant-garde experimentation. Was it ahead of its time or just too weird to work? Either way, it's unforgettable. We explore the album's fascinating backstory—from label resistance and chart failure to its underground cult status and lasting influence on extreme music. Along the way, we unpack everything from Baudelaire lyrics and Bosch album art to dive-bomb guitar solos and operatic vocals. If you're into the darker corners of 80s metal or love when bands break all the rules, this one's for you.If you're a fan of Ministry, Bauhaus, Slayer, or the experimental side of Metallica, hit play.
The underground metal scene has experienced a remarkable revival since the pandemic, and bands like Pursuit are at the forefront of this resurgence. Guitarist Henry joins us to discuss how this three-piece outfit from Fargo, North Dakota is carving their path through relentless touring and musical evolution.Henry reveals the band's fascinating sonic journey from their thrash metal beginnings to their current sound heavily influenced by grindcore legends like Napalm Death. "We trim the fat," he explains, describing their philosophy of crafting concise, impactful songs rather than indulging in technical excess. This approach has become central to their identity as they've refined their songwriting process. What makes Pursuit particularly interesting is how they've transformed potential limitations into strengths. As a three-piece, they've developed a symbiotic relationship between instruments where guitar and bass occupy distinct sonic territories while creating a massive, cohesive sound. Their pragmatic approach to touring—typically spanning 6-11 days while balancing day jobs—offers valuable insights for emerging bands about sustainable growth and realistic goal-setting.Don't miss Pursuit on their upcoming Midwest tour, including a stop at The Ritz in Macomb on April 12th, where they'll be joined by Sustenance from Georgia and Juggernaut Agenda from Quincy, llinois. Experience firsthand the raw energy and evolving sound of this promising band as they continue building toward turning their passion into a sustainable career.Check out Dial The Wild on Facebook and Instagram#dialthewild
Today I am joined on the podcast by Liam and Peter of the band Apple of Basilisk!Apple of Basilisk is a Toronto-based metal band, formed in 2024.After taking their time tightening up last year, including recording their debut 5 song EP, 'His Crowned Skull Raised to the Sun' which will be released on April 4th, they are now ready to unleash their grinding, blackened death-doom maelstrom on the world. Fans of Cult Leader, Deafheaven, Napalm Death, and Mare will be pleased.I'll be chatting with Liam and Peter about the EP, covering all the songs in the 5 track EP, recording with the renowned Davis Maxwell at School House Studios, the ideas and inspiration behind the music and what the band has planned for the future. The EP really is fantastic, anybody who likes their music on the more extreme side of things should check it out on April 4th and I cannot wait to see what people's reactions to it are when it's released.Apple of Basilisk on Linktree Hosted on Acast. The nu metal revival is alive and well in 2025, so much so, that iconic bands from that era are returning to delight long-term fans, while gaining a whole new audience who have yet to experience them. One such band is Northamptonshire, UK's Defenestration. A five-piece who were active between 1999 – 2004, releasing three studio albums (One Inch God – 2001 / Ray Zero – 2003 / For Us it Ends When We Drown – 2004) and one split EP, (Year of the Slug with Scurge – 2002). Not only that, but they also toured all over the world with the likes of Raging Speedhorn, Napalm Death, Biffy Clyro, The Wildhearts, Skindred, and so many more iconic bands. So popular were they, that they opened the Wembley Arena leg of the 2001 'Tattoo the Planet Tour'. A set of shows that included Cradle of Filth, Static-X, Biohazard, Slayer and Pantera. Twenty years after their last live performance as Defenestration, the original members reunited for a ‘one-off' performance. Supporting Raging Speedhorn, the show was to raise money for record producer Russ Russell who was unable to work due to illness. This would be followed by another benefit gig for Russ Russell later in August 2024, Defenestration's first headline show since 2004. The itch was back, and another set of shows with Raging Speedhorn all but confirmed that there was a desire for Defenestration to return as an active band. Which is where we find ourselves now. Defenestration has reformed, is under new management, and is in the process of solidifying their legacy, while looking to the future too. This is what we discuss with vocalist Gen Tasker, getting excited about what the future might bring, while also spending plenty of time look back at their immense history too. https://virusukthrash.bandcamp.com Welcome to this week's episode where we dive deep into the world of punk, thrash, and heavy metal! Today, we're spotlighting Virus, one of the true pioneers of the U.K. thrash metal scene of the 1980s. Known for their old-school thrash—played raw, fast, and unapologetic—Virus set the standard for how thrash should be done.Formed in 1986 by Keith "Henry Heston" Hazelden and Terry "Tez" Kaylor of Criminal Damage, Virus quickly made a name for themselves with their DIY ethos and blistering sound. Early member John D. Hess joined during their first year, with Coke Finlay completing the lineup in 1987. Their self-funded debut Pray for War paved the way, but it was their second album, Force Recon, that cemented their place in the thrash pantheon.Virus shared stages with legends like Megadeth, Celtic Frost, and Napalm Death, becoming known as the “bad boys of thrash metal” thanks to their wild, chaotic gigs. The band split in 1990 but reformed in 2009 under Coke Finlay's leadership, releasing two EPs and a string of ferocious live performances.2020 marked their triumphant return with Evilution Apocalypse, their first full-length album in 30 years. The lead single, mixed by the legendary Randy Burns, captures the spirit of old-school thrash while pushing their sound into new territory.Today, Virus continues to shred lead by Coke Finlay on vocals and lead guitar. This is a band that's stayed true to its roots while evolving to keep the thrash flame burning bright.Get ready for a journey through their storied career, from the mosh pits of the 80s to the stage-shaking anthems of today. This is Virus: thrash, the way it should be played.

The other day when Bernard Fanning and Paul Dempsey were here, we touched on something dear to my heart - using music as a way to enhance your day. I've used music as a tool for as long as I can remember. To shift mood states, to help me remember things, and to concentrate. Our guest today is an artist drawn to the abstract, an artist with no love nor concern with the mainstream*, an artist happily dismantling expectations around music and sound and creating some of the most extraordinary and powerful bass music in the known universe.Kevin Martin's early recordings were abrasive industrial tracks that challenged the listener to stay the course. His work with Justin Broderick (formerly of Napalm Death and Godflesh) came out under the moniker of Techno Animal and still sound as abstract and dangerous today as they did 30 years ago. However Martins sound continually evolved taking influences from Hip-Hop, Reggae and Dub until his current incarnation of The Bug was born. The Bug released an incredible run of bass heavy tracks for Swamp 81, Ninja Tunes and Pressure Records. The Bugs 'London Zoo' album was heralded as a game changer in UK Bass music, bringing together some of the best MCs in the country such as Flowdan, Warrior Queen, Daddy Freddy, Tippa Irie and many more.Kevin also recorded with King Midas Sound, Fennez and released a number of incredible ambient albums under his own name including his current release 'Black' a tribute to Amy Winehouse. We are always looking out for people who totally commit to their music and that is why we are delighted to welcome Kevin Martin to the podcast. Before that it's all Hot-Dogs and Gong-Baths.*(May have some love and concern for the mainstream). This week on the pod we take a dive into the most extreme music we've covered on the show so far, Grindcore (sorta). As we take a look at the 13th studio album by UK grindcore legends Napalm Death. We do our best to untangle the intricacies and subtle differences between grindcore, deathgrind, and death metal as well as try to decipher what these woke libs are screaming about! In the news corner this week we look at one of the funnier Kanye stories in recent memory where he sent the twitch streamer Kai Cenat the wrong size sweatpants and then had his manager John Monopoly (real name) threaten Kai because the pants didn't fit. Join us for a chat with guitar iconoclast Bill Steer as Carcass prepares for a tour of Australia alongside The Black Dahlia Murder and Freedom of Fear throughout April 2024. We kick off the discussion by revisiting the seminal album Scum by Napalm Death, where Bill shares memories of the recording process and his contributions to the album's songwriting. We discuss From Enslavement to Obliteration, which topped the UK Indie charts, and explore its lasting significance to Bill and the band. We also talk about the idea of performing the album live at festivals. The conversation shifts to Carcass's The Curse EP, and Bill explains his departure from Napalm Death and provides insights into the catalyst behind his decision. Exploring Carcass's sonic evolution from Reek of Putrefaction to Symphonies of Sickness, we discuss the inspirations behind the intricate compositions on the latter album, showcasing the band's growth and musical prowess. Moving on to the making of Necroticism—Descanting the Insalubrious, Carcass's first 'guitar hero' album, Bill shares the process of recruiting Michael Amott and their collaborative songwriting approach. Reflecting on the band's deal with Columbia Records in the US, we discuss what could have been done differently. Don't miss the opportunity to catch Carcass live in action, alongside The Black Dahlia Murder and Freedom of Fear, on the following dates: April 2nd: Magnet House, Perth April 4th: The Gov, Adelaide April 5th: Northcote Theatre, Melbourne (SELLING FAST!) Episode #57 Pete talks with Shane Embury about his memories of tape trading, Napalm Death, Lock Up, Dark Sky Burial, and Insidious Disease…
The body of critical study - and fan adoration - around the music of Napalm Death has concerned itself principally with the band's pioneering grindcore and its transition into the death metal of Harmony Corruption. But what of the band's wilderness years, the mid- to late-1990s? The 108th episode of Radical Research digs into what its hosts consider to be Napalm Death's most radical music, the four-album futurist blitzkrieg spanning the years 1994-1998. Get ready for some serious side-eye, Legions, as we cross over into the torn apart. Note I: In the episode, Hunter mentions Ian Christe's writing on the band's 1994 album, Fear, Emptiness, Despair. In Christe's Sound of the Beast, he writes that the album, "...started a fresh chapter in the history of a band whose membership half-life had once lasted no longer than an album side. Previous urban hardcore noise blasts were mowed by sophisticated guitar layering and innovative drum patterns. Their dissonance became a conscious component of the composition, not merely a side benefit of chaos, and the marriage of intense anger and calculation yielded a masterpiece of passionate, politically minded, negative realism." Note II: In an act of gall, the scalar dimensions of which could only be compared to the Pacific Ocean, Mont Blanc, and John Holmes' ballistic member, Christe includes Fear, Emptiness, Despair in his list of the 25 Greatest Heavy Metal Albums of All Time. The list includes other controversial entries, such as Morbid Angel's Formulas Fatal to the Flesh, and Dream Death's rarely-trumpeted but mighty Journey Into Mystery. Note III: In our excitement, we failed to mention the men who produced these albums. All were produced by the estimable Colin Richardson, except Fear, Emptiness, Despair, which was handled by Pete Coleman. Only one of these gentlemen have played flute on a Skyclad album. Note IV: Please consider donating if you listen to Radical Research often: https://www.paypal.me/rrpodcast We also have a webstore where you can find shirts, CDs, and books, many of them recently restocked: http://radicalresearch.org/shop/ Music cited in order of appearance: “The Infiltraitor” (Words from the Exit Wound, 1998) “Plague Rages” (Fear, Emptiness, Despair, 1994) “Primed Time” (Fear, Emptiness, Despair, 1994) “Fasting on Deception” (Fear, Emptiness, Despair, 1994) “Ripe for the Breaking” (Diatribes, 1996) “Take the Strain” (Diatribes, 1996) “Diatribes” (Diatribes, 1996) “Birth in Regress” (Inside the Torn Apart, 1997) “Prelude” (Inside the Torn Apart, 1997) “Lowpoint” (Inside the Torn Apart, 1997) “None the Wiser?” (Words from the Exit Wound, 1998) “Trio-Degradable / Affixed by Disconcern” (Words from the Exit Wound, 1998) “The Infiltraitor” (Words from the Exit Wound, 1998) Radical Research is a conversation about the inner- and outer-reaches of rock and metal music. This podcast is conceived and conducted by Jeff Wagner and Hunter Ginn. Though we consume music in a variety of ways, we give particular privilege to the immersive, full-album listening experience. Likewise, we believe that tangible music formats help provide the richest, most rewarding immersions and that music, artwork, and song titles cooperate to produce a singular effect on the listener. Great music is worth more than we ever pay for it.
Eulogizing the mighty and beloved American hero Carl Weathers, proclaiming the end of the HM-2 era as society prepares to embrace the new dawn of a vintage Boss effects pedal resurgence, discussing racism in metal and how to separate the art from the artist, going nuclear on a grown man who walks around with a name like Gelal Necrosodomy, and more! Monrella - Shank [TRM007] A1. Monrella - Shank B1. Monrella - Shank (Force Reaction Remix) B2. Monrella - Shank (Tensal Remix) X1. Monrella – Shank (Tensal Remix 2) Digital Only Release date: 15/03/2024 Formats: 12'' Vinyl & Digital Birmingham Techno paragon Monrella (Mick Harris) doesn't mess about, returning to Trauma Collective with 'Shank', a no-nonsense cut of heads down 909 techno. His analog production strikes a fine balance between solid groove and industrial rumble as the characteristically dry precussion crunches around a relentless synth stab. Alongside Regis and Surgeon, Harris was an architect of the dark Birmingham sound that blossomed out of club night House of God. He played a key role in the genesis of grindcore in the late 80s as the former drummer of Napalm Death and went on to translate his taste for raw, analog distortion into rugged 4x4 club tools with productions for Regis' ZET label in the mid 90s as Monrella. Several alias projects followed, the broken techno explorations of Fret, beatless dark ambient with Lull and the dub inflected trip-hop / illbient of Scorn. 'Shank' is remixed on the flip by the Berlin-based Force Reaction, a collaborative project from Kwartz and Kaiser, two purveyors of a particularly muscular strain of techno igniting dances across Europe. They last released together on Kaiser's K S R imprint back in 2021 but this is Kwartz's second outing on Trauma Collective after a link up with Monrella on TRM003. Their version introduces reverb and echo to the mix while firmly retaining dancefloor utlity. Rounding up the B-side is a polyrhythmic and densley textured remix from Héctor Sandoval as Tensal. Sandoval is one half of pioneering Spanish techno duo Exium, and he also contributed to ZET back in 2001. Tensal doubles up on this release, dispatching a second remix in the form of a peak-time thumper available as a digital only bonus track.
In this episode we dive into the complicated world of collecting, and of course, record collecting to be specific. Purchasing physical media from artists we love is very important to us, but how do you manage all of it financially and logistically? Where do you draw the line and when has it gone too far? We discuss, contemplate, and pontificate on the mechanics of being a die-hard music fan and record collector. Right after that, we tackle a few segments, read some listener email, and finish with a semi-exhaustive piece on Napalm Death's classic and divisive track, "You Suffer." We gathered clips and comments from friends and luminaries in the scene, each one offering their thoughts on the song, interspersed with live versions and covers of the infamous two second song. In the bands my guest has played with over the past, what 30 years maybe – like Minority, Brick, One Against Many and presently Black Mercy – I'm getting influences from some outstanding bands and I'm thinking Negative Approach, Whipping Boy, Poison Idea, Artificial Peace definitely a bit of Napalm Death thrown in there to grind things up a bit. Fuck, just saying those band names makes me want to do a back somersault…but at my age and all that, I'd better give that a miss.In addition to his hardcore vocals, he's also a skater, podcaster, caipoerista, comic book aficionado, husband and dad. I'm really interested how we get drawn to particular cultural scenes – music, comics, painting, design, poetry…and how that relates to which senses we favour – visual, aural, tactile – and which of our skillsets that appeals to.https://www.iwannajumplikedeedee.comI Wanna Jump Like Dee Dee is the music podcast that does music interviews differently. Cover songs can be rather divisive amongst Metal fans. Some see it as a loving tribute. Others see it as a complete waste of time and effort. Around the RAM offices, we love a good cover song. Particularly a blast from the past being paid homage being paid by a current hotshot. But which is preferred? The original...or the cover. So we figured we'd go over our own laundry list and Yay or Nay on which version. Think QR/Slade. WASP/Who. Napalm Death/DKs. Musically, we crank new and used from Hirax, the aforementioned Napalm Death, Striker, Display Of Decay, Tailgunner, Deathblow and we introduced Mexico's Phantom in our "Indie Spotlight". The Walkmen are a band from New York about to embark on a reunion tour. We'll share the stage with them at the Just Like Heaven Festival in Los Angeles next month. We chat with Hamilton and Peter from the band about Trump's arrest being eclipsed by the Barbie movie, Bad Bunny rides again, beard trimming, Pete's a real bruiser in the paint, being a band that doesn't really high-five each other, living at the Carlyle Hotel for awhile, Pete's son met his girlfriend at a Napalm Death show, Glastonbury stories, some depressing sync talk, and what happened when they performed on The OC. instagram.com/thewalkmen twitter.com/donetodeath twitter.com/themjeans
