The original Manic Pixie Dream Girl and 1980's teen dream Diane Franklin had a birthday today and to celebrate we are replaying her show in 2020 Diane talked about how much fun it is to see her fans at 80s festivals, though the children she teaches acting too these days get first priority. She talked about the enduring appeal of Better off Dead, Last American Virgin and Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure and gives her reaction on not being able to reprise her role as the princess in Bill and Ted 3. She delves into the horror films she has been in such as TerrorVision and what it was like to play 2 different roles in 2 versions of the same story in Amityville Horror 2 and the recently released Amityville Murders and acting with Burt Young in both. Joined once more by Sam of @Thank_u_for_shopping (Follow her here: instagram.com/thank_u_for_shopping ) Our 5th entry in our ‘type of guy' series. The Manic Pixie Dream Girl archetype and real life people are examined in our breakdown of Elizabethtown, The Garden State, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, 500 Days of Summer, and Scott Pilgrim vs the World. We break the criticism into 2 different qualities that we have opposing feelings about: A woman that helps a man not be depressed anymore by helping him feel life again (stupid). A quirky, independent free spirit that is fun and does exist in real life (good)

The Movie Madness Podcast is celebrating its 500th episode with a conversation 20 years in the making. Erik Childress has had many conversations with his guest over the years, but this one is a look back at where Nick Digilio and him were in their lives in 2004 when they, respectively, named Sideways and Garden State as their favorite films of that year. They talk about why those films were so personal to them, almost exactly ten years apart in their respective ages, at the time and if revisiting them two decades later is the same experience. The conversation veers into personal struggles, “manic pixie dream girls”, lost opportunities and soundtracks.
Back in 2007, a review of Cameron Crowe's ELIZABETHTOWN on a little website called The A.V. Club set off a cultural firestorm by birthing the term "Manic Pixie Dream Girl". On this episode of Debut Buddies, we get into the origins of (and problems with) the term, discuss the original MPDG in question (as played in the film by Kirsten Dunst), and consider the implications for films featuring ebullient female characters past and future. We also play I See What You Did There, and spend some cozy time in the MouthGarf Report.Sources:https://www.salon.com/2014/07/15/im_sorry_for_coining_the_phrase_manic_pixie_dream_girl/https://www.avclub.com/the-bataan-death-march-of-whimsy-case-file-1-elizabet-1798210595https://www.avclub.com/wild-things-16-films-featuring-manic-pixie-dream-girls-1798214617https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Manic_Pixie_Dream_Girlhttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bringing_Up_BabyPlease give us a 5 star rating on Apple Podcasts! The excellent writer and wonderful friend Hayley Sigmon joins Allison and Joe on this week's Queer Cinema Catchup. Listen as they delve into Luke Gilford's National Anthem. Over the course of the episode, they'll unpack the disconnect between their negative reactions and the critical praise the film has received (9:30; 26:10); the ways in which Luke's own history does and does not make its way into the narrative (22:17); the history of the Gay American Cowboy (35:48); and their invention of a trope to rival the Manic Pixie Dream Girl known as the Shy, Soulful, Tortured Twink (43:55). https://www.brandeis.edu/writing-program/write-now/2021-2022/miller-hana/index.html Hosted on Acast. Is she a Quirky Muse or a Flat Character? Today we are diving headfirst into the world of the Manic Pixie Dream Girl. We'll unpack the origins of the trope, coined by film critic Nathan Rabin in his review of "Elizabethtown" (remember Kirsten Dunst's airport twirling?), and explore its evolution through Zooey Deschanel's rise to fame. We'll discuss how movies like "Garden State" and “500 Days of Summer” impacted the trope (and indie music), the merits of the MPDG, explore the overlap with the Pick Me Girl and debate whether Red era Taylor Swift was a full-blown MPDG or simply the queen of twee. She ponders whether women are required to perform their inner lives to validate their existence. The discussion includes a review of social media's role in these stereotypes, with the candid girlfriend being portrayed as an airheaded muse by her boyfriend. Elle criticizes the objectification and commodification of women in these roles. She also explores how the perception of an "inner life" can vary greatly, positing that there is no single acceptable framework for self-actualization. Elle emphasizes that women can cultivate rich inner lives through various activities that honor their desires and contribute to their well-being. The episode ends on the topic of the manic pixie dream girl, a stock character type often used in fiction.
Max and Cassandra's exploration of the Manic Pixie Dream Girl continues with the film that started it all: Elizabethtown (2005). Does this flick deserve all the vitriol? Or is it just the victim of sneering dismissals by cynical critics whose mothers didn't hug them enough when they were young? Is it good? Is it bad? Is Kirsten Dunst's Clair actually a manic pixie dream girl at all? All this and more!Patreon.com/QuillAndFilmMeasuringFlicksPodcast@gmail.com
In this episode, we reflect on what we call the Loner Girl aesthetic, an eccentric style epitomized by the vulnerable yet spunky YA protagonistas of decades past, best accessorized with a messenger bag, sneaker flats, and a starry-eyed disposition. Cary Grant and Katharine Hepburn team up for a hilarious comedy involving dinosaur bones, leopards, and constant wardrobe changes! Sarah and Robin are exploring fantasies in this penultimate episode of season 3. They break down what constitutes a fantasy with help from the classic guide The Erotic Mind by Jack Morin, deconstruct some of their own fantasies, answer the question "does Sarah even fantasize?" and talk through the process of reconstructing fantasies that feel outdated or misaligned with your current erotic self. Robin introduces Sarah to the meaning of Cathexis and how it's different from love and the poem Manic Pixie Dream Girl by Olivia Gatwood, and Sarah introduces Robin to a segment about delightfully gay dolphins. Dave & Jess are back with another episode, this time watching Self Reliance (2023) on Hulu, which they paired with a Pickle Margarita. Self Reliance is the writing and directorial debut of Jake Johnson - does his charm extend to behind the camera, or should he stick to acting? The couple discuss the movie, and their thoughts on Jake Johnson the actor lead to a discussion of their favorite Spider-Men, whether the lead female character is a Manic-Pixie-Dream-Girl? (and is that term appropriate to use?). Dave dips into his screenwriting past to educate Jess on the book Save the Cat, and why it's relevant to the movie, and Jess has her mind blown after doing a deep dive into the etymology of the Super Mario Bros. And the pickle margarita may seem like an odd combination, but Dave assures you it works surprisingly well as a cocktail. Thanks for listening! With her keen eye for movie analysis, we examine this problematic trope, its harmful effects, and its prevalence in the media. Amidst our discourse, we touch on recent controversies in the entertainment industry, such as a questionable joke on SNL, the show's toxic work environment, and the relentless pressure to produce a new show every week. Our conversation doesn't stop there. Together, we tackle the issues of shows and movies being abruptly removed from streaming platforms, causing disappointment and frustration among viewers. We also delve into the decline in quality of fashion and costuming in some shows, highlighting the need for historical accuracy. Through this, we express our collective disappointment with the lack of transparency in the industry and its impact on us as viewers. We end our discussion by examining the portrayal of manic pixie dream girls in films such as 500 Days of Summer and Ruby Sparks. We unpack the complexities of this trope, from its origins with male writers to its subversion by female writer Zoe Kazan in Ruby Sparks. By offering alternative endings and analyzing the trope's impact on relationships and gender roles, we aim to bring a fresh perspective to this well-worn trope. So, tune in for an enlightening conversation about film, TV, and the roles we see on our screens. (0:00:05) - SNL and Warner Bros. Jonathan Demme's Something Wild (1986) is a fun, sexy, if a little weird Manic Pixie Dream Girl road movie. That is until about the halfway point, when the music and lighting suddenly both get darker, and Ray Liotta walks in to change this movie into something like an action thriller. In less steady hands, this could have felt more like two separate movies, but Demme and screenwriter E. Max Frye stick to their guns and stick the landing.
The second in Stuart Gordon's trilogy of HP Lovecraft adaptations, FROM BEYOND is a wild, kinky, gleefully disturbing thrill ride of a movie. We're joined this week by none other than Nathan Rabin, author, culture writer, former editor of the Onion AV Club, and the man who coined the term "Manic Pixie Dream Girl!" Nathan helps us dive deep into Gordon's oeuvre, from his early days as a renegade theater producer to his era of making high-quality horror at budget prices. On her podcast, TV, I SAY WITH ASHLEY RAY, Ashley has no pretentions about good entertainment. But once upon a time, she was a young Bergman scholar (and even, briefly, a beat poet). This entire trajectory of self-examination and unapologetic devotion to her own interests might just have its roots in Michel Gondry and Charlie Kaufman's 2004 opus, ETERNAL SUNSHINE OF THE SPOTLESS MIND, and its female lead, Clementine (Kate Winslet). After that conversation, Jordan has one quick thing about the phenomenon of Barbenheimer.***With Jordan Crucchiola and Ashley Ray

It's the 5th Monday of the month, and you know what that means: a BONUS episode. This time Amanda and Wade are digging into the movie trope coined by the amazing film critic (and Weird Al superfan) Nathan Rabin, the manic pixie dream girl. The hosts talk about how this term shone a light on a troubling Hollywood trope that must be addressed, but has also been used in some instances for harm and misunderstanding. Also, Amanda gives Wade an online quiz to see what percentage of a MPDG Wade is. Want to know how much he is? You'll have to listen to find out. A chicken does coke in this movie. In a delayed release of the first episode we ever recorded, Danni and Summer discuss Damien Chazelle's Babylon and the characters that pull it all together. Topics include the 1920s Manic Pixie Dream Girl, an examination of immortality, and a thorough rant about some infuriating queer representation. We're still not sure if Chazelle came out as a hero or a villain in all this, but hey, that amazing party scene will get you through pretty much anything.Content warning for discussions of drug use, racism, and suicide.———Fine us online! https://linktr.ee/bisexuallylit Hosted on Acast.
