A micro-genre/movement/what have you that I've been doing my hardest to champion this year at Nine Circles is "castle metal"; melodic black metal rooted in the sound and aesthetic of Obsequiae while incorporating a multitude of other influences. There is an ever-growing roster of bands that have taken up the banner in similar yet distinct ways, and three released full-length albums this year: Morke with To Carry On, Veytik with Carmina Aerea in Aetate Ferrea, and Weald + Woe with Far From the Light of Heaven. The incredible musicians behind these three acts were kind enough to sit down with me to have an extended discussion on their main influences, lyrical and thematic inspirations, albums of year, and more. Don your chain mail, sharpen your sword, pour a chalice of your desired beverage, and enjoy! 9C LINKS: Website | Facebook | Twitter (X) | Instagram | Bluesky

In episode 249 of Heavy Metal Philosophy, Jon Barbas is counting down his five favorite black metal albums of 2025! For 35 years, Poland's unholy giants Behemoth have flown the flag for blackened death metal not only in their home country, but in all corners of the world. Along with Vader and Hate, Behemoth have played an important role in establishing the Polish extreme metal underground with an uncompromisingly brutal attitude that burns brighter with each passing year.Fresh from releasing their most recent album – The Shit Ov God - in May this year on Nuclear Blast, Behemoth have set their sights on Australia in February 2026 to perform tracks from their storied discography alongside new material. Straddling the line between the sacred and profane, Behemoth has risen to become extreme metal's most revered and provocative band, steeped in anti-authoritarian fire. Renowned for their elaborate live performances, the band continues to push boundaries with their fearless artistry and vision, and have vowed to bring their menacing glory to Australian fans on the upcoming tour.To celebrate the momentous occasion, HEAVY recently sat down with guitarist/vocalist Nergal to journey through the sordid world of Behemoth. We ask if his excitement levels remain as high despite touring most countries multiple times."Yes," he smiled warmly. "I don't want to sound arrogant here, because the fact is that from the first tour that we did in Australia to the next one, it just grew by a few per cent. But every time it was bigger and bigger crowds. We even did some like big festival appearances, so we played in front of really big crowds there as well. Mostly, it's club tours, but still, I don't want to be like, oh, Behemoth is coming back, everyone is just fucking bowing. No, no, you always have to earn that. You have to work hard. We have a new record called The Shit Ov God, and I don't know how it's going over there in Australia. So it's always a test. It's always a question of how many people would like to go and check it out again if they've seen us before? And I hope they will. And how many of the newcomers are going to show up? So it's always a question mark, you know. I don't want to sound too full of myself, like it's a royal return of Behemoth. No, no. We do work hard; we do care about it, and we would love to have the biggest run yet in Australia."In the full interview, Nergal discussed Behemoth's upcoming tour in Australia in greater detail, highlighting the band's strong connections and positive experiences in the country. Nergal expressed enthusiasm for returning to Australia, noting the growth of their audience and the importance of continually earning their place in the music scene. He shared personal reflections on his career, emphasizing the gradual success of Behemoth over 34 years and the evolution of their live performances into elaborate spectacles. He also mentioned the financial challenges of live show production, drawing inspiration from other bands like Rammstein while remaining committed to enhancing their stage presence. The conversation further explored Nergal's creative process, which he described as organic and akin to piecing together a puzzle. He emphasized the need to capture fleeting ideas through notes to avoid losing creative opportunities and the challenges that come with longevity in the music scene. Nergal also discussed Behemoth's latest album, The Shit Ov God, acknowledging its potential for mixed reactions while highlighting its philosophical significance. He talked about the themes of the album and the title, expressing his thoughts going into an album cycle and more.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

We're joined by Hunter Hunt-Hendrix, composer, philosopher, and force behind Liturgy, whose concept of transcendental black metal has redrawn the boundaries between underground music and systematic thought. Her work operates in parallel registers: an experimental music practice that stands on its own terms, and a body of theory moving through theology, psychoanalysis, and philosophy. This episode goes deep into Hunter's provocation that the Byzantine tradition of Christianity (the Eastern lineage that lasted another thousand years after the Latin West began its trajectory toward secularism, science, and industry) might hold resources for navigating the current moment of structural collapse. We discuss the difference between the transcendental (conditions of possibility, historicized horizons, Hegelian self-relating negativity) and the transcendent (a higher realm of intelligibility that is actually, ontically, here), and why critical theory's allergy to the latter might be more ideological than rational. We also get into Hunter's framework for practice: tetraperichoresis, a fourfold structure involving integration (merging ancient and contemporary materials), coalescence (putting philosophy, music, and drama into positive feedback), irrigation (moving between institutional worlds and smashing them against each other), and catalysis (the messianic wager that everything you do could be hastening the Kingdom).

Davghter, the trans black metal band from London, will release their new EP ‘Mask Casket' on December 1st, 2025. An EP that takes the misanthropic aggression of black metal and points it at the reality of living in a world that tries to define you out of existence. This is black metal as a site of collective survival rather than spectacle. A mighty release that showcases immense creativity born from the souls of those who believe in what they are doing. This is black metal with feeling, black metal with a point, and black metal that everyone can embrace. Check out the full review here: https://www.gbhbl.com/ep-review-davghter-mask-casket-self-released/ We spoke to Izzy "DeadName" Bale (she/her) about the new EP and how this is the record that firmly puts Davghter on the metal map.

Discovering and giving exposure to brand new artists is one of the greatest privileges when it comes to writing about music. And when a fantastic musician you're already familiar with announces something completely new, it's hard not to set your expectations high. With Weft and debut LP The Splintered Oar (Bindrune Recordings) I can say with confidence that these expectations were not only met, but surpassed. Best known to the metal world as the live and session violinist for the almighty Panopticon, Charlie Anderson's debut album with his first solo project is a tremendous amalgamation of black, prog, and death metal with some beautiful folk passages to top it all off in a fresh and unique fashion. In anticipation of The Splintered Oar's release next month Charlie was generous enough to chat with me about his influences and the musical journey to get here, the incredible musicians he worked with on this album, and more. Grab a cozy beverage, sit down, and enjoy! 9C LINKS: Website | Facebook | Twitter (X) | Instagram | Bluesky

Also on this episode, longtime Legion favourite, Drugoth, joins the Weekly News Rant to deliver judgment on the latest singles from Mayhem, Malefic Throne, Suffering, Death Angel, and others. We also debate our top picks for death and black metal drummers and discuss the controversial Tom Aspinall / Ciryl Gane stoppage at UFC 321. “I had to watch it 3 or 4 times to finally get there…” Ahhh, the 80's. A time when people could actually afford to live, back when Taco Bell was both super cheap and equally delicious, horror movies were genuinely scary and often boasted incredibly “special” special effects, and terrified parents everywhere were completely “freaking the motherfrickin' frick out” over heavy metal and the ensuing “Satanic Panic” that followed. (Remember, we're talking about the 80's here…) “I kinda feel like Satan probably listens to Air Supply nonstop…or Gino Vanelli…” Not to worry though, because Tipper Gore was on the case, going out of her way to ensure that the future prosperity of heavy metal would be secure forever with the PMRC seal of approval (PARENTAL ADVISORY – EXPLICIT CONTENT) plastered on the cover of everything that would be deemed essential listening. Thanks to the diligent efforts and painstaking research of Tipper Gore and her Parents Music Resource Center, the PMRC lovingly crafted “The Filthy Fifteen” for American parents to ensure that their children would only be exposed to the finest audio artistry the heavy metal genre (and somehow, also Satan) had to offer. One of the bands included on that fateful list were the founders of black metal, VENOM (ironically, rated “O” … for “Obviously” …as in “Obviously, your kids should be listening to this!”). Hailing from probably the fanciest, most upper crust sounding city in all of England, Newcastle upon Tyne's 3-piece of evil VENOM came blasting out of the gates of hell with what would become the foundation for the black metal genre that would begin its ascent into heavy metal culture around the same time as thrash metal in the early 80's, with a sound combining the rawness of Motorhead, the darkness of Sabbath, and the speed of thrash with an imagery reminiscent of KISS if they were actually satanists. If Black Sabbath are ground zero for the formation of heavy metal as we know it, then VENOM is no doubt the Black Sabbath of the black metal genre. With a dark, detached creepiness that sounds like something recorded in an underground mausoleum, VENOM are the originators of extreme metal and were out in front, scaring the hell out of parents everywhere and delighting young and impressionable metalheads the world over. Happy Halloween everyone!!! It's time to celebrate spooky season the way we did back in the 80's, by going through your kids trick-or-treat plunder and picking out all of that “good candy”. Robert is forced to test his endurance and provide feedback, as he has no idea what he will be subjected to every week.
